Is Fedor Emelianenko the Floyd Mayweather of MMA or Will Strikeforce Champ Alistair Overeem Submit to Olympic Style Drug Testing?

Fedor's management never brought up "Olympic style" drug testing when they were scheduled to fight Josh Barnett -- who has failed multiple pre-fight drug tests.

Fedor Emelianenko did a little bit of pro-active PR last night and called for a fight with Strikeforce champ Alistair Overeem. This apparently was in response to a widening consensus that Fedor and his management preferred to wait until 2011 for a revenge match against Fabricio Werdum, with possibly a NYE bout in Japan in the interim.

But Sports Illustrated's Josh Gross tweeted earlier and poured hot salty piss cold water all over that:

Overeem-Fedor talk will be interesting. M-1 is asking for Olympic style drug testing. Overeem's camp says no, athletic comm. testing enough.

Uh oh, this is turning into one of those "deja vu all over again" moments that haunt fight fans. If you recall when Fedor and M-1 Global were busy working up to their infamously dumb decision to sit out the Strikeforce April show on CBS, one of the sticking points was their demand that Overeem submit to, you guessed it, "Olympic style drug testing".

As history tells us, Overeem ended up fighting Brett Rogers on a May Showtime card instead and said that "(Fedor's) management declined to fight me tonight" after that fight.

The astute fight fans at MMA for Real immediately spotted a famous parallel to Fedor and M-1 from the world of boxing: Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

For those not following the ordeal that's so-far prevented the biggest boxing match of the decade from happening, Mayweather and his camp have been pushing Manny Pacquiao to accept "Olympic style drug testing" for a while. There's been some back and forth involving Pacquiao's camp apparently agreeing then denying they'd agreed then the whole deal fell apart over money.

Who was at fault? Kevin Iole is emphatic that it's Floyd Mayweather:

He's ducking Manny Pacquiao.

There can be no other rational explanation.

Welcome to "Mayweather in Wonderland," where they try to convince you that up is down, the grass is blue and the sky is green. Never mind that Mayweather has tarnished, perhaps forever, his legacy as one of the best boxers of all time. Given his disinclination to fight Pacquiao, it's hard to regard him as the best fighter of his own time.

Remember this morning when I compared the three way stand off between Fedor, Overeem and Werdum to the scene in "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" where Clint Eastwood has emptied the gun of one of his two gunslinging rivals in advance of the big showdown?

Well Iole's remark about "Mayweather in Wonderland" kind of jogged my brain and reminded me why I posted that "The Fedor Era is Finished: Fedor Emelianenko's Ridiculous Demands Mean He'll Never Fight the Best Again" back in April. Because even if Fedor's manager Vadim Finkelstein isn't "a blood sucking monster" he certainly knows his way around Wonderland.

While I've long been sympathetic to the need for fighters to have more autonomy and have sometimes openly rooted for Fedor and M-1 in their effort to land blows against the UFC empire, these Mayweather-style antics remind me why the boxing model is not a good road to go down for the UFC.

UPDATE: For the record and since so many of you are falling for M-1's feeble spin, I'm 100% in support of WADA style drug testing for ALL MMA fighters. I'm for random testing of licensed fighters between fights and I'm for serious punishment for fighters who fail multiple tests. And unlike many of you, I'm willing to pay a surcharge for my PPVs and tickets to pay for the testing. I'll also bravely advocate that all promoters take a 10% pay cut to cover the additional costs.

But M-1 doesn't care about testing. They fought Tim Sylvia -- who's failed a drug test -- and signed to fight Josh Barnett -- who failed 2 drug tests BEFORE he failed the CSAC test that cancelled their Affliction fight -- and said nary a word about drug testing. They were talking about fighting Antonio Silva -- who's failed drug test -- and again, not a peep about drug tests.

Furthermore, up until the point that Overeem announced that he would be fighting K-1 the rest of the year they were saying that "the fans want Fedor vs Werdum". Frankly this is all a big excuse to screw Strikeforce and take the biggest payday in front of them -- NYE in Japan at Dynamite!! likely against Josh Barnett. Mark my words, there will be no discussion of drug testing from M-1 if that fight is signed.

Quick correction kid
If you recall when Fedor and M-1 Global were busy working up to their infamously dumb decision to sit out the Strikeforce April show on CBS, one of the sticking points was their demand that Overeem submit to, you guessed it, “Olympic style drug testing”.

While M-1 mentioned drug testing back in February they were talking about a potential fight with Overeem at the end of the year. The reason the April fight fell apart had nothing to do with it and in fact there was no plan to have a fight between the two on CBS. The original plan was for Fedor and Overeem to both appear on the card against different opponents to help build up to a later meeting, but unfortunately Overeem wasn’t available until May or later and Fedor… well who knows why he backed out.

by RoeNoMo on Aug 25, 2010 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

That's not the point

The point is that Fedor and his management disingenuously made their “announcement” calling Overeem out last night. Then today they demanded that he submit to this Olympic-style drug testing that they know he isn’t gonna do. How about you be honest, M1, and quit messing with fans’ minds. If you’re going to demand ridiculous stuff, how bout you do it at the outset instead of getting peoples’ hopes up that YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO FIGHT for the umpteenth time before dropping a bomb like that just because you want to call out a fighter who you know won’t submit to those demands.

Fedor trained with “Baby Fedor”, who was caught using performance enhancing drugs. He was going to fight Barnett. But he decided to pull this card out now because he’s trying to find a way to revitalize his image at the expense of another without manning up and fighting.

So, again, I say. I AM DONE WITH FEDOR. I am done with posts about Fedor. It is a total waste of my time. I actually spent a few minutes last night thinking about how awesome a Fedor v Overeem match would be. Now I’m just annoyed and crotchety. Sorry, guys.

But until Fedor and M1 quit acting like a bunch of sissies, I want them to GTFO!

How is a blood test as invasive as being randomly searched, detained, and questioned?

You give 4mL of blood, and that’s it. It’s less invasive than having someone watch you pee into a cup, which everyone thinks is fine.

Having someone stick you with a needle and extract a crucial bodily fluid that is essential to surviving is far more invasive then having someone watch you pee. Survey 1000 people and I can guarantee 995 of them will agree.

I have been frisked by the cops plenty of times to be extremely pissed about it when there were no grounds. But this is athletics, to prevent the use of illegal substances, it is only necessary for them to actually use Drug testing methods that will expose those drugs that are being used and not some method that will catch let just say 50% of the users. What is really the point then? Although i should make it clear i don’t agree with WADA demand to have 365 days a year random testing, where athletes must inform WADA of their location at all times or that they would need to be at a testing centre within 24 hrs of being notified that a test will be taking place,

The rules through out society are supposed to apply equally to all people, but in reality this is far from the truth (this is a major problem) within society in all sections in equality, in employment, in government, etc.
If WADA testing takes place through negotiation this is okay with myself. AO has every right not to submit to WADA testing. As this is not enforced in AC bylaws. But it should be, and without individuals and fans demand this shall never take place.

I think it is a neccessary evil to always question all types of authority, so that the best and most efficient methods are always being used. If we don’t question we will be stuck with the same indiffernent and stupid ACs for a longer time. (See Texas, Virginia, California, etc.)

Of course Overeem isn’t accoutable to M1 or Fedor he is accountable to himself, his family, and his employers.

by pRoXiMo on Aug 25, 2010 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't disagree

But the difference is, M-1 isn’t questioning authority, they’re trying to become the authority. If they want to change the way drug testing is done in this sport, fantastic! They have a lot of people who would be on their side, but this isn’t doing that.

I would’nt personally say that M1 is trying to become an authority, rather they are doing what any proper and good management would do for their client, to prevent any negative actions taking place towards them/Fedor. Of course if they want to change the way the ACs handle drug testing, they would have to bring it up to the ACs themselves.

Personally i just don’t see any AC going to WADA testing anytime soon. I remember that this past year that there were several presentations to the AC’s who demonstrated the need for WADA testing but the ACs just turned their back on all the scientific evidence and said what the currently do is suitable.

There is certainly a need for improved testing in the sport, of that there is no argument, but Fedor isn’t some special case who gets to change the rules when it pleases him. If he wants reform he should be petitioning the ACs, not changing the rules when it suits him and his management.

There is certainly a need for improved testing in the sport, of that there is no argument, but Fedor isn’t some special case who gets to change the rules when it pleases him. If he wants reform he should be petitioning the ACs, not changing the rules when it suits him and his management.

What about when he fought Barnett? There was actual concrete evidence to support the idea of Olympic style drug testing in that fight and they never asked for that, why now? It’s a bullshit smokescreen.

So what?

You ask for stricter drug testing when you have a greater suspicion that someone is using PEDs. Look at the Mayweather-Pacquiao mess and now Overeems response. You’re angry that Fedor is not making this demand to all his opponents? You want him to fight once every two years?

It’s not M1’s job to create reform in this area, and it’s silly for anyone to think that they would bother with all the work required to do so. Is it self serving? Of course it is, just like hundreds of people settled hot coffee injuries with McDonalds before the big lawsuit that changed their practices.

I don't really care if it's in their place

The point is that I expect them to mandate testing when they feel it’s necessary. I expect Overeem to say, “fine, if that’s what you whiny dickheads want”. I don’t expect M1 to waste their time trying to make athletic commissions have stricter testing when they know that it won’t get them anywhere.

I just don’t see why Fedor gets the blame if Overeem refuses a blood test. He called out Fedor first, accusing him of ducking for a year. If he can’t spare 4mL of blood for the opportunity, then it was all a farce.

They have signed contracts with SF, they have fought under these rules multiple times before in the states, numerous times with no regulation in Japan, they’ve fought known, multiple time cheaters and never once up until this moment in time was it an issue.

Nonetheless, if the only thing standing in the way of Overeem’s wish to fight Fedor is 4mL of blood, and he says no, then fuck him. He’s the reason for the fight falling through.

If M1 makes more silly demands about venue, money, logos, etc. then you blame them. That’s all speculation right now. Overeem saying no, if Josh Gross is right, is not.

Bullshit

“olympic style testing” is not a single 4ml blood test, its an ongoing, whereabouts-based testing protocol that is extremely intrusive.

More importantly, once Werdum won the #1 contender fight that was to determine Overeem’s, Overeem said then that if Werdum couldn’t or wouldn’t fight him, he would instead enter the K-1 tournament, which he has now done…end of story…

They would have lost big bucks if any of those guys tested positive

Which they did when Barnett failed. Hence the lawsuit.

With Strikeforce, it doesn’t matter if Overeem is positive or refuses to fight. They have a contract and will get paid whether it is Overeem, Silva, Werdum, or someone in Japan.

by Mint on Aug 25, 2010 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions

No they wouldn't have

If they had established those demands ahead of time, testing would have been planned for and alternates taken into account. The contract is Strikeforce isn’t magically different than the one they had with Affliction and the proposed Bigfoot fight would have been in Strikeforce and the blood test never came up.

You can’t possibly think it’s somehow acceptable to believe that M1/Fedor are willing to fight known cheaters sometimes but not Overeem who has never been in trouble for it. That is totally inconsistent.

"Don’t quote old fucks to me" – Brent Brookhouse

by Chris Barton on Aug 25, 2010 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

What alternates?

Those were the only three HWs out there that could make any money. If any of them fail at any point, Affliction folds even earlier.

There’s nothing inconsistent about my claims. Bigfoot was barely even discussed. For the longest time we hear that M1 wants Werdum only and Overeem-Silva is basically a done deal, one day we hear that M1 is maybe considering Silva but nothing official, and the next day they publically state that they want Overeem.

Fedor got paid no matter who he was fighting. AA rematch, Yvel, Buentello, Monson, etc. etc. Fedor was willing to fight known cheaters and now, all of a sudden with no reason, he wants extra testing for a guy who never has been caught cheating once.

That IS inconsistent.

Did you forget why Affliction folded?

Let me get this through your head one more time:

THEY COULD NOT SELL ANY PPVs OR SEATS WITHOUT FEDOR-BARNETT.

Fedor did not get paid for Fedor-(Barnett’s replacement), because it could not sell with Yvel, Buentello, Monson, etc, and hence was cancelled. If Sylvia failed, Affliction dies after or maybe even before its first show.

Heck most of the athletic commissions can’t even afford to test all the fighters on a card with the current methods and Strikeforce didn’t piss test their own fighters in Texas. If Overeem countered with “okay but Fedor needs to get tested too and M1 is going to have to pay for it”, the onus would be back on M1 to fund its request and no one would be blaming Overeem if the fight then fell through. But that’s not what he said. He said no to WADA testing altogether.

Or Overeem can point out that he is training for K1 this fall and isn’t fighting in Strikrforce and M-1 already knew that before they said any of this.

by who me on Aug 25, 2010 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Which would be fine if Overeem replied as such. Instead he outright declined WADA testing.

by Chromium on Aug 25, 2010 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Normal drug testing is expensive enough as it is. This is why even the better athletic commissions don’t blanket test every fighter even on major cards. WADA drug testing is hella expensive and would probably end up being reserved for major title fights. I would have no problem seeing it implemented like that though.

by Chromium on Aug 25, 2010 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

If they said that Fedor would never fight anyone again unless they had blood test done and that all fighters at M-1 challenge events would now be blood tested then that would be good for the sport but singling out only Overeem for needing extra test is just a ploy on their part and a slap in the face.

by who me on Aug 25, 2010 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

If M1 pays for it, and Overeem has nothing to hide, then I don’t see the problem. Maybe some of you might have really bad needle phobias, but people who get punched in the face for a living you’d think would have higher pain-tolerances and be less squeamish in general. I’m assuming Fedor would be subjected to the same testing in this case.

by Chromium on Aug 25, 2010 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s all BS, Overeem is fighting in K-1 this fall not Strikeforce. The only problem I see is that it is insulting to single one fighter out for blood testing like that, particularly when it has never been an issue for any of their other opponents. I would imagine if Overeem had agreed then it would of been dropped and M-1 would of come up with a different excuse/demand instead of actually putting out money for the test anyway, quite possibly that they refused to pay for the test.

by who me on Aug 25, 2010 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Overeem should have just agreed then and let M1 come up with a different excuse that doesn’t cast himself in a bad light. If Overeem had said “I agreed to blood tests and they came up with another excuse,” I’d be completely on Overeem’s side right now. I think M-1 is generally a scummy organization. But that’s not what happened.

As for Overeem being singled out, I agree he is being singled out (although I assume Fedor will take the same test). M1 obviously considers him a very dangerous opponent, more so than Sylvia or even Barnett. But, contrary to what Kid Nate says, I’m not “falling for M-1’s feeble spin,” I would like to see WADA testing be done for all major title fights, as I stated earlier in this thread, and Overeem is hardly free from suspicion. On top of everything else mentioned, Golden Glory has a pretty horrible reputation in general when it comes to doping.

So, I really think it’s on Overeem at this point, unless he or his management have been misquoted.

by Chromium on Aug 25, 2010 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

The thing is he isn’t agreeing to it because he isn’t taking the Fedor fight, he’s already training for K-1 and it looks like M-1 Global knew it. He’s not saying no to the blood test he is saying no to the Fedor fight this fall altogether. Things have changed real quick with this story tonight.

To be fair, Overeem looks like a Marvel comics character, and his increased head size is consistent with long-term HGH use, which is something that you can only catch with a blood test.

by Chromium on Aug 25, 2010 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Increased Head Size

Look at how much bigger Couture’s head is at HW! He must be taking HGH!

Wait, the HW pic is years before the LHW pic.

Here’s another example. He must be on HGH because look at the difference in head size!

by Jason H. on Aug 25, 2010 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Another example of this infamous head growth problem!

Pretty much anything you can say about Overeem’s facial changes you can say about any of these guys. So unless you think Big Macs are a PED, please stop with this crap about Overeem’s head/jaw looking different and that’s how you know he’s on juice/hgh/whatever.

by Jason H. on Aug 25, 2010 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

1) I don’t see noticeable difference in the size of Randy’s head in either pic, certainly not to the degree I see it in Overeem’s.

2) Joe Riggs is an example of a guy who used to weight over 300 lbs. and lost a considerable amount of fat. He lost neck and cheek fat because that happens when you lose a lot of fat in general. Usually gaining 50 lbs. of muscle doesn’t also dramatically increase the size of your jawline and give you neckfat. Consider the bolded part my main point of my entire reply.

3) Head growth is a well-known side-effect of HGH abuse, so yes, it’s worth noting. I never said I was 100% certain Overeem took the stuff and I’d love it as a fight fan if Overeem took the blood test and came back clean. If he won’t do that for a title fight against a legendary opponent then obviously that’s gonna raise some questions.

4) I don’t recognize your third example (a before/after pic for him too would be nice).

by Chromium on Aug 25, 2010 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Third example is Ricco Rodriguez.

“muscle growth” is a misnomer. Gaining weight means you gain weight. It goes everywhere. Just like you can’t target fat loss, when you gain weight, all of you gets bigger.

When you stop going on crazy hardcore diets and starving/sweating out 30lbs to make weight, and suddenly you can start eating a high calorie diet to put on mass, what do you think your body does? It puts on mass. When you have a proper exercise routine, you can turn some of that mass into muscle, maybe even a lot of it. But anyone who puts on weight, their face will look bigger.

You repeat all of the Overeem misnomers….for one, the notion that he gained 50 pounds. I don’t imagine that you’re ignorant enough in MMA to think that all 205 pound fighters weigh 205 pounds. I also imagine that you probably know that fighters can do some drastic things to make weight cuts. But you ignore that to drop in the sensationalist “50 pounds of muscle!!!!!” comment, ignoring that Overeem never gained 50lbs and that obviously someone can’t put on pure muscle weight.

Compare anyone who’s gained 30 (or 50 as you say) pounds and their face looks different. It’s not because their skull got bigger.

by Jason H. on Aug 25, 2010 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

1) Alright, 35 lbs. of muscle. While losing overal bodyfat it seems, from his more cut abs.

2) Trivial point, but you are confusing the terms misnomer and misconception.

3) The degree of difference in Overeem’s face is greater even Rodriguez, and Overeem is not only larger now he’s also more cut. It’s very difficult to do that naturally unless you have awesome cardio, and awesome cardio usually eliminates neckfat.

Above all that, I don’t see why Overeem doesn’t agree to a simple fucking blood test that would take 15 minutes of his time and leave M-1 with no legitimate excuses. I do not see the problem if he’s totally clean. That part seems very cut and dry to me. In fact it would go beyond just a fight with Fedor, he could shut down most of the steroid accusations in general.

by Chromium on Aug 25, 2010 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

he could shut down most of the steroid accusations in general.

No, he couldn’t. The guy could pass every test in the world, and the same people who accuse him now would accuse him later. but the guy was always RIPPED, and he had to cut weight. Steroids or not, he obviously had ridiculous genetics and wasn’t prepared to face the big boys yet

There is no proof in that pudding. those pictures were taken nearly 3 years or more apart. It is QUITE realistic to obtain that mass in that amount of time, especially if you’re going from starving yourself to eating a good, natural diet. People are just haters. I’m not saying he didn’t take anything at any point, but he has a perfectly natural physique.

Roid bodies typically have HUGE deltoid muscles and unnatural pecs. His pecs are huge, but look like a natural progression, and his deltoids look naturally built.

basically what i’m saying is, GTFO with that nonsense.

No, I will not GTFO

The body that he wound up with today is not his “body type”. He was thin, no mass at all. I’m not saying he is taking today but to get to this mass, please. Look at Brock in the WWE and look at him now. It’s night and day.

you have NO idea what you're talking about

there is no light and day there. Overeem used to have to cut weight and probably not lift weights, and now he can to his hearts content. That amount of physique can occur very naturally. I’m not saying whether it did, but you using that as photographic evidence shows that you’ve never spent time around guys that have great genetics and lift clean, AND can look like that. I have.

Brock has ALWAYS been a monster and these questions have followed him since college. Even look at his high school pictures where he is a beast. I mean, this argument has probably happened 1000 times on BE.

Well at least you learned something.

I’m not even a fan of Overeem’s I think he’s over-rated but it’s blatantly obvious why he didn’t fight in Strikeforce between late 07 and mid 09, they didn’t have a tv contract or any money or any worthwhile fights, in June of 09 shortly after the Showtime deal he was supposed to fight for Strikeforce but injured his hand, then after that he fought in K-1 that fall. This isn’t my opinion these are the facts.

And Fedor not being well known, come one that’s been shown time and time again that he’s isn’t as well known or the draw some people seem to think he is. He’s got a big hardcore following and that’s about it.

The most watched MMA fight ever in the US wasn’t even a real fight it was on a tween show on Nickelodeon. Ifight Shelby Marx drew 7.9 million viewers, that’s how popular MMA is it gets beat out at it’s own game by a show produced for 14 year old girls on a children’s cable tv network.

As I pointed out Michael Bisbing vs Matt Hammill got more viewers than Fedor and it was on Spike tv, are either or them doing huge PPV numbers?

Oh and 48 hour mysteries on CBS averages between 5 and 6 million viewers on Saturday nights, for rerun episodes.

by who me on Aug 25, 2010 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

TweedleDum and TweedleDee

First, I would like to see you show me where 48 Hour repeats average between 5-6mm viewers. Second, how many MMA fans do you think there are out there enough to sit and watch a card? Put a number on it. Look at TUF, the CBS shows, Fight Night, Verus, etc. Close to 5.5mm is a big portion of that and does not represent an unknown.

Here I will pull a random 48 hours rating for you off the top of google.

10:00 CBS 48 Hours Mystery (repeat) 1.4 5 6.15
 NBC Law & Order: SVU (repeat) 1.0 4 4.07
 ABC Rookie Blue (repeat) 0.8 3 3.45

here is another

9:00 CBS 48 Hours Mystery (repeat) 0.9 4 4.74
And the key demo is way up for the SF card. The same people who are watch 48 Hour mystery are not the same watching SF. And like I asked, how many MMA television viewers do you think are out there? 5+mm is a big chunk. He is not unknown.

by memitim on Aug 25, 2010 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions

So do we have to go comparing 48 hours rerun ratings so you can find one that’s just a little bit lower than Fedor did and I can find one that is higher? It’s reruns of a show so shitty it’s stuck on Saturday night (the worst night of the week for ratings). The show averages between 5 and 6 million viewers (you do know what average means right?).

by who me on Aug 25, 2010 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

How many of the MMA television viewers do you think are out there? I would say close to 5.5mm viewers is a pretty big cut of those viewers.

yep 5 to 7 million or so casual viewers would be a decent number and that isn’t shit in terms of numbers of casual fans that tune in occasionally to free shows. I didn’t answer that question because it was a meaningless question, your banding around a number like it means something but Spongebob SquarePants has more viewers than MMA has casual fans. Firefly was getting 5 million viewers a decade ago when it was on and it couldn’t even finish one season without getting cancelled, 5 million really isn’t anything special by todays household numbers. You say 5.5 million like it should mean something and I just don’t get where you can’t understand that it doesn’t. In the grand scheme of things MMA is a fringe sport with a limited audience still, it’s getting better but it still isn’t all that. More people watched Rampage vs Henderson back in 2007 on free tv, have either of them broke the PPV sales ratings? Rampage does good now but he’s a lot more popular now than he was back then, heck he’s done a feature movie. Kimbo Slice did nearly 2 million more viewers than Fedor did but his UFC PPV wasn’t a record breaker, just because people will tune in for free doesn’t mean they will spend $50 for it.

by who me on Aug 25, 2010 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Why the hell are you talking about SpoungeBob and Firefly?

I’m talking about MMA fans only. Kimbo is known by just about everyone there is in US MMA. Your point has been no one but the most absolute hardcore fans knows who Fedor is. You admit that the market is small. So, if 5.5mm tune in to see him then it has to be a big chunk of the overall US MMA viewers.

by memitim on Aug 25, 2010 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Casual fans tuned in, a lot of them thougth it was a UFC show, heck I think even ESPN labeled the footage UFC footage. Casual fans like that tune in but they don’t really know who all these guys are and they aren’t going to learn. There are still a hell of a lot of casual fans out there who think that Chuck Liddell is still world champion. That isn’t the number of hardcore fans that is just a number of people who tune in (many of them drunk at bars watching fights with no sound). Even as far as Kimbo goes (the most famous MMA fighter there is), he’s not that well known and a lot of casual fans know him as “that beard dude”. You are acting like every single MMA fans watched that show and every single one of them knew who Fedor was and became a Fedor fan from it and that is just silly. I know at least three UFC fans at work who watched that show and still don’t actually know who Fedor is. They were watching it as a Saturday night party. When I try to explain who Fedor is to them (and that that show wasn’t a UFC show) they still don’t care.

I brought up the other shows to point out that 5 million people isn’t very impressive at all and shouldn’t be touted like it means anything special.

by who me on Aug 25, 2010 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Last one for the night

…ok, so Fedor comes on and the viewership surges by almost 2mm from the rest of the show. Now, we are not going to sit here and figure out how many of the original 3mm were watching waiting for Fedor and the main event ( I know the group at my place was) but for shits and giggles lets split them, but the 2mm we could be pretty sure of. So, let’s say 3.5mm were tuning in to see Fedor. Out of the overall MMA audience that exists in the US I would say that is still a good chunk and that he is not an unknown in the US market.

by memitim on Aug 25, 2010 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Not really, yea he’s not unknown in the US market but he’s not really a draw either (it’s not like that many of those people followed him over to Showtime). The 1.49 million Fedor’s CBS event gained for his fight was good but you are reading way too much into that and now that he has lost the thing that was drawing interest there isn’t there anymore. Fedor’s Showtime event didn’t even crack 500k which puts him below Frank Shamrock’s shows and well below what Hershal Walker did or Gina Carano(and one of Gina’s CBS fights had more viewers than Fedor’s too). Yes Showtime isn’t going to get anything near what CBS does in terms of ratings but it shows that Fedor’s drawing power has actually shrank since the CBS show(which may be due to M-1’s holdout with Strikeforce) and after the loss it shrank more. He’s a moderate draw at most but he cost as much as the biggest draws in the sport. Not to mention every time he starts to gain any momentum in the US something has come in and screwed it up (like Josh Barnett or his own management).

by who me on Aug 26, 2010 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions

He's not unknown

he’s just not particularly well known, especially amongst mainstream fans who don’t read mma websites. There are many, many other fighters who have stronger reputations and more ability to pull in dollars in the USA.

Yesterday your argument was that he didn’t need to draw in the USA because he’s such a big draw in the rest of the world, and today you’re arguing that he’s huge in the USA and look, here’s the USA ratings to prove it.

Which is it?

Am I the first one to question Overeem’s metamorphosis into Ubereem might have been chemically assisted? You are saying that it is not in the realm of possibility that he put on that much mass. You keep asking for an “expert opinion”. How about simple fucking common sense. You look at Alex Rodriguez as a Mariner and you look at him as a Ranger and there is a huge difference. His talent was the same.

by memitim on Aug 25, 2010 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Oooooh, common sense! Lets try it.

30 lbs gain over five years on a 6’5" frame as he went from 23 to 28 years old after artificially suppressing his weight? No wai!

I’ve gained half that weight in half that time (1:1 ratio to his) on a much smaller frame with nothing but a decent diet, protein shakes, and creatine later on. And I’m no gym rat nor do I have psycho good genetics like he does.

Common sense says he could be on PEDs as any professional athlete is. Common sense also says that we have no proof, and common sense also says that PEDs don’t magically make you giant and ripped. Genetics, diet, and lifting do.

He isn’t taking the test because he’s fighting K-1 this fall and has already started training for that, the whole statement from M-1 Global was a big sham because Overeem was doing something else.

As far as the years he was in Japan, that’s not rocket science it’s plain as can be. Overeem left Strikeforce because they had no tv contract and nothing to offer him at the time, they were still a regional promotion, he came back shortly after they got a tv contract and shows on CBS. Overeem went were the money was, first to K-1/Dream and then back to Strikeforce onece the money was better with them.

The pictures are worthless.

Tuf Noob you goof, how long have you even been on the internet? Mir vs Lesnar 2 already was estimated at 1.6 million (the current MMA record for PPV sales). How much more than the most PPVs ever sold for a UFC even do you think Fedor vs Lesnar would do?

by who me on Aug 25, 2010 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Typo police is out and about

That was Mir/Lesnar II which had a huge build to it. Mir just got clobbered by the guy that Lesnar just beat (and who is also under steroid scrutiny). Do you think Mir today is going to draw 1.6mm viewers? Really. C’mon. I think anyone dealing in reality would agree that Brock/Fedor would be the biggest HW fight UFC could put on.

by memitim on Aug 25, 2010 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

If Mir puts a couple of big wins beneath him and gets back into title contention it won’t be the Mir we are talking about today it will be the Mir that is back in title contention as he was then. The Mir who knows how to sell a fight, the Mir who had a huge backstory with Lesnar and they both hate each other, it’s not that far out of an idea as you think it is. Who knows what would happen or which would do the best, I doubt Fedor will ever be in the UFC anyway but the fact that you can’t even admit that it’s a possibility says a whole lot about you.

by who me on Aug 25, 2010 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok

if Mir beats CroCop, then beats say Cain and JDS. And Brock gets thru both of them as well then yes, it could possibly draw as much. Maybe. Chances of that happening?

We get it, memitim.

After you watched the TUF finale, you thought this MMA stuff was pretty cool.

You went on the internets and googled “Best MMA mans ever” and found some Fedor highlights. You went back to school the next day and told your friends about this invincible badass who’s the best in the world…they wouldn’t know, because they didn’t watch the super cool stuff like you, on the internet.

Over the years your affection builds, and it’s hard to let go. We get that.

Yawn, this is getting old and I am getting tired and you are just getting goofy and desperate.

Yes Mir vs Brock 3 may outsell Fedor vs Brock, Mir vs Brock 2 sold more PPVs than all of Fedor’s PPVs combined. Of course we will never know for sure because it doesn’t look like Fedor will ever go to the UFC anyway as they will never co-promote with M-1 Global so it’s a silly and meaningless discussion but feel free to keep flying that flag of irrelevance for days if you want.

Look at him

in his last fight in the US before he defended against Rogers in 2007. Since folks are sensitive about pictures I won’t post any but go to youtube and watch the fight. His physique is completely different. He goes to Japan and he comes back a monster and doesn’t come back for three years, while he’s the champ. Whether or not his massive development could happen naturally or not it puts up a red flag. A huge one.

by memitim on Aug 25, 2010 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

You do realise that Overeem’s weight cutting was getting to such a level that he was pissing blood, right? That tells me the physique he had then was quite…unhealthy. When he decided to move to heavyweight he was able to do more muscle training & eat more. Gaining what he’s gained is hardly unnatural. Dude could be on the bull shark testosterone, but so could a myriad of other guys based on the amount of evidence we have for Overeem.

Incidentally, do you think Frank Mir is juicing?

by wiggles89 on Aug 25, 2010 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

He wasn't weight cutting

…in 2007. He fought for the HW title and left for Japan and came back with a ton more mass. Do I think Frank Mir is juicing? Who knows. Did Frank Mir leave with his belt and go fight in Japan for three years and come back a monster?

by memitim on Aug 25, 2010 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not out of the realm of possibility for anyone to have used PEDs

You don’t have to be cut like a bodybuilder to have used steroids.

Overeem gained like one pound a month on average in your picture sequence. What’s suspicious about that?

by Mint on Aug 25, 2010 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

It's suspicious

…not only for his complete transformation and the amount of mass he put on but also because he is the SF champ and he defended his belt for the first time in the US in almost three years. I’m not saying it proves anything but it raises a red flag and if I’m a fighter getting into a cage I’d like to be certain.

by memitim on Aug 25, 2010 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Here troll, I'll feed you

Clearly you have little to no education on physical training and conditioning. Each person has a certain potential size that their frame and body can accommodate. Up until that point, as long as you train right and eat the right diet, you can pack on size like no other.

In Overeem’s case, he spent several years starving his body and doing what was necessary to keep his weight down. This is important, because when doing S&C training, the quickest and biggest gains in size come after a period of dieting and leaning out. For the average person who doesn’t do this but still works to put on size, they can gain about .5-1.0 pounds of solid muscle per week if they do it right. After a lean-out period, 1 pound per week is average.

Overeem is a professional athlete with exceptional genetics. He spent years starving his body. Realistically, he could put on 10 pounds of pure, lean muscle within the first week. If he had three years to put on weight, even at an average of .5 pounds per week (which isn’t that unheard of), he could it in just over a year. Over three years, there is nothing suspicious about it.

Please go learn about training for size before you start trotting about on your uninformed high horse. If you knew what you were talking about, your point would go over a lot better. And before you question my credentials, I’m an actual trainer who has been studying this shit. Please stfu now.

by CaliforniaCreamPuff on Aug 25, 2010 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

First of all

blow me. Secondly, it is not a matter of what he can or can’t put on given his genetics or what his physical training or conditioning can do you juicehead. The point is why the hell does he disappear to Japan while he is the champ of a US organization and not defend in the US while he becomes a monster in size. It’s a red flag whether you read every book on physical conditioning in your library or not. Plain and simple. Now go take your clear and cream.

Please stop embarassing yourself here and just let it go, you haven’t proved anything or even gave any worthwhile clues besides stuff that has been running gags on the internet for years. Overeem left Strikeforce and went to Japan because Strikeforce didn’t even have a tv contract at that time and couldn’t offer him anything of value. Any wonder he came back once they got on CBS?

by who me on Aug 25, 2010 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Bullshit

He could of ought Arlovski on Showtime when? Strikeforce didn’t get going on Showtime till the middle of 2009 and Overeem was fighting K-1 at that time. This magical 3 years you can’t seem to figure out is pretty obvious.

by who me on Aug 25, 2010 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

C'mon, stop it.

In 2009 he fought in 3 MMA fights and in 4 K-1. He couldn’t have had one of those three MMA fight be against Arlovski to defend the belt he hadn’t once since 2007?

by memitim on Aug 25, 2010 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

He was scheduled to fight for Strikeforce on the Lawler vs Shields card (June 09) but had to pull out with a hand injury. It’s not like he wasn’t supposed to fight for them as soon as they got their tv contract. So what’s the issue?

by who me on Aug 25, 2010 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I refuse to believe you're this dense

You’re wrong on so many levels and about so many things it’s ridiculous.

- In June 2009, Overeem was scheduled to fight Brett Rogers. Overeem was injurted, and Arlovski (who wasn’t even in Strikeforce yet, so I have no idea where you got the idea that Overeem should be fighting him) came in as a replacement.
- Overeem’s hand became badly infected, causing him to pull out of an August 2009 bout with Fabricio Werdum.
- Strikeforce booked all 4 of their other heavyweights for a card in early November (Fedor-Rogers, Werdum-Silva)
- Overeem spent Oct-Dec fighting in K-1 outside of a random squash match at a local show promoted by his gym.

So you’re wrong ab out the opponent he should have been fighting, wrong about the timeline, uninformed about what happened, and directly contradicting all of your rhetoric about Japan being a huge market by saying Overeem is shady for fighting there.

I assume you think that Fedor is shady for wanting to fight in Japan on NYE, right? Why is that? Because he’s doing PEDs? You have to admit it’s raising some red flags.

by Jason H. on Aug 25, 2010 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

He fought in K-1 then...

For the same reason he’s fighting in K-1 now. Money.

Strikeforce paid Overeem $30,000 to come win his “title”. Now since you are a huge proponent of the international market being so valuable, you should agree that being a popular heavyweight in the K-1 tournament is likely to pay significantly more than $30,000. Why exactly would he come back to fight for peanuts against nobodies in Strikeforce, again? He’s fighting in the second largest entertainment market in the world! Your words, not mine.

by Jason H. on Aug 25, 2010 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions

So, he hurt his hand.

he couldn’t fight in April because of K-1. He can’t fight in June because of his hand. He can’t fight in April again because of K-1 and now can’t fight in the US again because of K-1. But, he took on MMA bouts within about a month of other K-1 fights. Got it. One title defense in going on 4 years. Three total fights in his entire career in the US. Yeah, no red flags here.

by memitim on Aug 25, 2010 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Fedor spent years fighting in Japan

Instead of challenging for the title in the US. You have to admit that raises some red flags. Why didn’t he want to fight in the US, and defend his title against US fighters?

Yawwwnnnnnn....

Fedor was in Pride till they imploded and were acquired. He then came to the US the following year and faced Sylvia, Arlovski, Rogers, and Werdum. All top 10 fighters at the time of the fight.

It would have been awesome if Overeem’s camp responded by saying “yeh, sure. We’ll take the tests!”

Then M-1 would probably add new stipulations.

Seriously, what is their end game? Once Fedor retires and they no longer have him to hold the fans/UFC/Strikeforce to ransom with EVERYBODY is going to know how difficult impossible M-1 are to work with.

Have they not thought about that.

Overeem is being a baby

He needs to just take what strikeforce is giving him, idk why he’s even the HW champ he never fights for SF his inactivity should be a defining factor. He only wanted to fight Fedor so he could get the glory of saying he beat him if he did, but Werdum beat him to it, now he wants werdum bc he beat fedor, if fedor won, overeem would still want fedor, now he just doesn’t care, he’s only taking fights that get him alot of attention which is ironic since all he does is fight k-1 and dream which No one seems to care about over here.
