Missed Connections: Strikeforce Blows the Potentially Epic Jason Miller-Nick Diaz Match

Life is a collection of opportunities. It's up to you to make the most of them. Sometimes the heavens align and the perfect opportunity plummets to Earth, right there for you to reach out and grab. Capitalizing on these rare chances is the difference between pushing a Benz and living in Malibu and operating out of a broken down shack in south east Alabama and driving a riding lawnmower to your job at the Wal Marts.

Strikeforce has one of these perfect opportunities, waiting there for them to grasp. Sure, the promotion's last CBS show went off the air after a brutal brawl between Jason "Mayhem" Miller and members of the Cesar Gracie crew, led by the always angry Nick Diaz. Some fans laughed, some were appalled. Our own Brent Brookhouse fell in the latter category:

First of all allow me to rant. I'm embarrassed for the sport of mixed martial arts.  I don't fault Strikeforce for the brawl and honestly I think it's unfair to fault Miller.  Miller went in to the cage and did some "thunder stealing" yes.  But when the repercussion for that became gang assault I am not sure.  Did we see Matt Hughes' boys jump Georges St. Pierre for stating that he was "not impressed by his performance?"

I entirely hope that we see the Cesar Gracie camp members involved in the attack charged with assault and forced to own up to their behavior in court.  I also would like to see both Diaz brothers, Gilbert Melendez and anyone else involved with the assault suffer a massive suspension.  Anything under one year would be too little in my eyes.

No matter how you feel about the confrontation in the cage, it is now an opportunity. No MMA clip in recent memory got more mainstream play and  mainstream press is a precious commodity when you aren't named Dana White and your promotion isn't called the UFC. The now iconic photo by Keith Mills tells a story you couldn't pay a thousand writers to create. Miller and Diaz have a built in back story, both can sell a fight, and, by the way, it's also a compelling matchup. Win, win, win, right? Not so fast.

This is Strikeforce remember? The promotion that couldn't pull the trigger on a heated rivalry between Diaz and KJ Noons two years ago (that one was Elite XC). That couldn't get Fedor Emelianenko into the cage with their champion Alistair Overeem, that couldn't even milk the star power of Bobby Lashley before he was exposed in front of a national audience. Suffice to say, Strikeforce is ready and willing not to make the obvious match, not to cash the check begging to be written, and not to make the matches the fans are clamoring for.

And it looks like they are making yet another mistake.Today Strikeforce confirmed with MMA Weekly that instead of taking on Miller, Diaz will once again fight the bland Noons in a battle no one has thought about in a calender year:

"Yes, this fight is set for Oct. 9," Mike Afromowitz, Strikeforce Director of Communications, later confirmed to MMAWeekly.com.

Strikeforce: San Jose coverage

Star-divide

Miller, for certain, will be devastated. The host of MTV's Bully Beatdown has done yeoman's work, the kind of public relations Strikeforce never seems to be able to accomplish, to sell this fight to the MMA public. In a wonderful video by Fanhouse's Ariel Helwani, Miller makes his case:

ARIEL HELWANI: "Well, you want to do the that. Does that mean that he doesn’t want to do the fight?"

MAYHEM MILLER: "Obviously. I mean… that’s what I’m getting because everybody wants to see the fight. Everyone’s like, ‘hey man, when you’re going to whip Nick Diaz’s ass?’ I hear that like 10 times a day, you know, and that’s just at my dinner table. You know? But… it’s just like one of those things like I’m in the middle of this weird publicity war where people think that I don’t want the fight. I want the fight. Hell yeah I want the fight. Of course I want the fight because I will whip his ass and make him look bad doing it."

HT Fight Opinion

According to Miller, Diaz killed the fight. He wanted, Strikeforce President Scott Coker wanted it, and so did the fans:

ARIEL HELWANI: "Have you talked to Scott Coker about the fight?"

MAYHEM MILLER: "YEAH! He wants it, I think. I think that he wants it. Scott Coker wants the fight. I’ve heard directly from the line Scott Coker wants the fight. Of course, why wouldn’t he want the fight? Two exciting guys who talk smack and fight hard. I know. I respect him as a fighter, BUT as a person man he’s running scared."

ARIEL HELWANI: "You seem a little fired up."

MAYHEM MILLER: "My upper lip is sweating, that’s how fired up I’m getting. All right, let me calm down a little bit. NO, I don’t want to calm down!"

ARIEL HELWANI: "All right. You’re a 185′er, he’s a 170-pounder."

MAYHEM MILLER: "NO, NO, NO, NO, let’s squash that right now. The whole 170 thing, he made that up. He fought, what, Frank Shamrock at 183. He fought Scott Smith at 182. All of a sudden when he has to fight Mayhem, he’s a 170-pounder, Oh, okay, very convenient that you’re a 170-pounder now. All right, cool, he a 170-pounder."

This would have been the most talked about Strikeforce fight of the fall. Instead we're going to get just another fight, with just another bland build. I never thought I'd say this to Nick Diaz, a fighter I once called "the greatest man to ever live." But the situation demands it:

Don't be scared homie.

He said in that video with Ariel that he can't make it anymore.

And he hasn’t done it in five years. He’s fought at 205 more recently than 170.

Doesn't really change it...

the guy already cuts a good amount to make 185 and he’s saying that another 10 lbs won’t hurt? 180 is way more reasonable, or the 182 that Diaz fought Scott Smith at. If they decide to make the fight, that is.

by SSreporters on Aug 25, 2010 2:10 PM EDT reply actions

Exactly. I don't understand how Snowden is blaming this on Strikeforce

Diaz doesn’t want to fight Miller, saying “why are you picking on a smaller guy? I’m 170 and you’re 185”. Miller says he can’t make 170.

Fedor is asking to fight Overeem, and Strikeforce always wanted this to be the third Fedor fight because that’s the order that makes the most sense. They may make it a pay per view, as they now have some footage to promote it (the UFC owns almost all of Fedor’s footage). I’d buy it.

Lashley? AFAICS, they did the right thing by not putting him up against better competition. He wasn’t ready.

And how many people cared about Noons-Diaz a few years ago? Strikeforce was a much smaller promotion then. It will be just a fruitful to dig up the old dirt now.

by Mint on Aug 25, 2010 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I tend to agree with this

Does it really matter if this fight happens next month? This match-up will still be good and probably headline worthy 6 months from now.

There is a ton of 170 talent out there to grab if SF wanted to

Ben Saunders
Frank Trigg
Dan Cramer
Steve Bruno
Chris Wilson
Jay Hieron
Jason High
Matt Arroyo
Brad Blackburn
Delson Heleno

Just off the top of my head. Not even counting the Riggs, Woodley, Taylor, Saffedine and Galvao they already have under contract.

" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "

by aaronb on Aug 25, 2010 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Damn near everyone on that list is a recent or somewhat recent UFC washout. Also Trigg I believe retired, Hieron is obviously just waiting for his contract matching period with SF to end so he can bolt to the UFC, Blackburn is under contract to Bellator, and I’m not sure that Arroyo (who has not fought in 19 months) is even still in the business.

Heleno I’d never heard of but his record looks interesting. Saunders and Wilson would be decent additions if they each got a win or two on the indies first, and the rest I don’t think are worth looking at anytime soon. Excluding Hieron who shouldn’t even be on this list, and maybe Trigg (who is coming off back-to-back first round knockout losses), none of the guys you mentioned would even be a top-5 StrikeForce Welterweight. They need prospects but more immediately they need credible title challengers.

http://www.instrength.com

by Tim Burke on Aug 25, 2010 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

if you are putting in the winner of lindland/rochold, when is this thing going to get done?

The point was to come up with a champ because their champ left. If you are going to wait for the winner of Lindland/rockland to start the tournament, now you’re going to need a fight for jacare in between. So what’s the point of the tournament?

The tournament was a very exciting prospect once we all figured out that Shields was gone. It could have been really good if they could have announced it/started it very close to jacare’s title win so that the winner could get the next title shot. But as more and more time goes on, the tournament is losing juice.

by Phildo on Aug 25, 2010 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I would love a tournament

But what I would love even more, is them not bringing up a tournament until they actually have an announcement to make. How cool would that be if out the blue they announced an 8-man LW or HW tournament starting in December?

And for what it’s worth, I’ve heard that Showtime that shot down a tournament last year and a HW tournament earlier this year. Lack of control over who gets booked was the reasoning.

by John Nash on Aug 25, 2010 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree 100% they have been stringing this tournament idea out for a while.

Please call me when you have a tournament with 4 or 8 good fighters booked* and stop talking about the tournament until you have that.

*Booked means done, official, signed by fighters, approved by commission, and is going to happen unless someone gets hurt.

by Phildo on Aug 25, 2010 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Strikeforce should steal a page out of Bellator’s book and use their Challenger cards to hold the tournaments. The finals would be held on a regular showtime card. It would be a great way to build up their young stars and help move them into the limelight.

You could hold an 8-man or woman tournaments for four or five different divisions every year.

by John Nash on Aug 25, 2010 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions   2 recs

The problem with that would be the cost

A challenger card couldn’t support the salaries of a Mayhem,Lawler, Babalu, Lindland, Smith, Le, etc on a single card.

Not to mention a big named tourney is ratings gold. It would be a waste to put it on a ho hum Challengers card.’

If it was a 145 lb tourney though. It could work.

I’d totally watch a challengers card with nothing but 4 or 5 WW prospect fights on it.

Seems like a great way to add some excitement to that division.

What was the point of the women’s tourney at 135? Tate won, but Coenen gets the first shot anyway.

Or just make Lindland/Rockhold a first round matchup in the tourney, with another fight the same night. Finals in early Jan. Jacare fights someone in between. Tournaments are done to create contenders in these cases, not champions.

http://www.instrength.com

by Tim Burke on Aug 25, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

The women’s tourney is a little different because no one knew anyone in that division, and it was a challengers card. Also, giving coennen the first shot hurt it.

I would like to see the tournament, but nothing leads me to believe that it’s actually going to happen. They’ve been talking about it, but they haven’t been really doing anything about it.

by Phildo on Aug 25, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe it’s just hope, but I think they’ll get it done. If Showtime has a problem with calling it a tournament, they’ll book a few MW fights and the winners face the winners and it’s not “labeled”. Right now there’s no clear # 1 contender for the title though, so I’m not sure what they do. Jacare/Mayhem 3?

http://www.instrength.com

by Tim Burke on Aug 25, 2010 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t see the tournament happening at this point. Sure, they haven’t officially called it off, but at this point who would they put in it? Diaz is busy, Miller is pushing for the Diaz fight and hasn’t even talked about the tournament lately as far as I know. Hendo and Le aren’t in. So how are they going to pull of an 8 man tournament at this point? Lindland/Rockhold hasn’t even been labeled as a tournament bout, and those were two of the guys people expected to be in it.

I get the impression Coker didn’t realize how hard it was to put it together before dreaming it up, so we’re at the point that the reality of the situation has crushed the hope.

by Gitaroo_Dude on Aug 25, 2010 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s really starting to hurt my head. I just can’t wrap my hands around some of their tactics. Even when the UFC puts together bad match-ups I can usually see why they did it. It just seems like they put all of the possibilities on the floor in front of them and then pick the worst example. I’m starting to think Dana White is Scott Coker and Dana bought Strikeforce just to fuck with Showtime.

One could say the same about Diaz

And really it doesn’t matter, because that’s not the point. It’s a marketable fight for a fighter in Diaz who is severely lacking in promotable fights outside the UFC.

Not to play devil's advocate....

Diaz – Frank Shamrock, Scott Smith, Mark Zaromskis (Dream WW Champ) & Sakurai – Last 4 fights as wins

Mayhem – Kala Hose (W), Jacare (NC), Jake Shields (L) & Tim Stout (W)

“NO, NO, NO, NO, let’s squash that right now. The whole 170 thing, he made that up. He fought, what, Frank Shamrock at 183. He fought Scott Smith at 182. All of a sudden when he has to fight Mayhem, he’s a 170-pounder, Oh, okay, very convenient that you’re a 170-pounder now. All right, cool, he a 170-pounder.”

I don’t know if Mayhem realizes right now, he’s the Strikeforce WW champ as of the Zomskis win, if you just won the belt, would you be switching weight classes or wanting people to hit 170 to fight you?

I really have a problem with both fighters, their shit talking for being in a sub-par promotion and the way they both market themselves. I can see the side ND here. Mayhem’s done 170 before, he’s talking the most shit, drop down and take his belt. Don’t be scared homie.

“YEAH! He wants it, I think. I think that he wants it. Scott Coker wants the fight. I’ve heard directly from the line Scott Coker wants the fight. Of course, why wouldn’t he want the fight?”

Saying yeah he wants it I think. To me doesn’t sound like you’ve really sat down and convinced Coker face to face how worthwhile that is.

I think I’d have much less of a problem here if Diaz was fighting a legit Welterweight even, instead of StrikeForce’s second-most-visible LW. Noons is a giant asshat, but he’s arguably StrikeForce’s second most visible Lightweight after Melendez, and I think people would love to see Melendez kick his face in. In addition to scuttling the Miller-Diaz bout, they are scratching what is arguably the best title-match they could have at LW without bringing in someone from another promotion.

Way off!!! Why would Diaz want to fight Miller?

Diaz is NOT a MW. He did two MW fights, one against a purely standup guy, and one against an aging star that is too old for the ground game. These were safe fights to move up a weight class for bc he wouldnt get bullied around on the ground, which is how hes lost in the past.
Miller is a huge MW and a strong grappler. Its a dumb fight for Diaz to take. Why should he go against a guy he hates who will probably beat him on size alone? Its not even like Miller is some gigantic star or anything. It just wouldnt be smart, or entertaining probably.

I LOVE the Noons fight instead. Guaranteed stand up war with both guys going for the finish. Tons of trash talk to come too. Maybe even another scuffle when Noons’ dad inevitable gets in the ring after the fight.

You guys are nuts. This is the best thing for Diaz, and the fans

There's plenty of reason

Also instead of bashing, you could see it as looking out for what’s best for them. I completely agree with Snowden’s article here, it’s a golden opportunity for a BIG fight, something they really need, and they’re letting it pass.

I’m not a hater but it’s pissing me off that they’re letting this one slip, I’d love to see this fight and it would do huge numbers, much larger than what Noons – Diaz will ever do.

He hates him, but would probably lose to the bigger, stronger grappler. Big wrestlers are his weakness. Why give a guy he hates a win over you.

by HighNoon on Aug 25, 2010 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Just check his MTV ratings

Part of the problem people have had with Strikeforce is their seemingly unwilling to cash in on his fame.

And you’re right, Diaz would probably lose. Diaz knows this, so he is running scared. Still, you jump a guy who is another fighter who can fight at a weight you have been more than willing to fight at before… you should expect to get called out for it.

And it’s a HUGE money maker for Strikeforce, which is the point. It has built in marketing done for it. Noons/ Diaz II (which is a fight I have wanted for a long time) does not have the same hype.

Do you think it would be smart for Kenny Florian to fight Jon Fitch? No way. It wouldnt be fair. Fitch is significantly bigger and utilizes a gameplan that would take advantage of that. The same is true with Diaz/Miller

Its not running scared to stay in your division. His MW stints were against good style match ups, so give him credit for having the balls to do that

Make up your mind

First you criticize Strikeforce for not pulling it off despite both fighters being in a different franchise. Then you say this:

Today Strikeforce confirmed with MMA Weekly that instead of taking on Miller, Diaz will once again fight the bland Noons

Which one is it? The fight being good or bad?

This is a potentially great fight. Noons looked awesome in his last outing and was the first guy to stop Gurgel. He has more recent visibility and potential for a better fight than Mayhem. Contrast the two fighting styles and this could be epic. Mayhem will always be there to fight the winner. KJ’s popularity should be capitalized on now.

Look at that perfectly placed tendril going down his forehead. You know he spent hours gluing his fucking hair in place with some type of cement-gel. How the hell does your hair stay like that while you’re throwing a punch?

God the only way I’d want a Diaz KO more badly is if I was from Stockton.

It’s eerie, though… he does resemble Noons in that picture.

What a pretty picture...

I’m definitely in the minority here, but I can’t stand Diaz. I’d like to see a repeat from their first fight, but it’ll be interesting since DIaz, in my opinion, is much better at 170. But go KJ!

What happens if Noons wins? Diaz get’s beat by a LW and drops in rankings? Should have booked Melendez/Noons and Diaz/Mayhem.

I think I heard something about Thomson not wanting to fight Noons though. Dunno if that’s true or not. Fancy Pants is still kicking around too. There ARE fights for Noons at 155. It’s just that Diaz needs to defend his title and there’s no one to fight him at 170.

That stinks too

If Josh wins (he would) we get Gil/Josh 3. Not that it’s a bad fight, but FFS we’ve seen it twice pretty recently. Noons would be a fresh face. It’s always good to have a fresh, credible, face for the champion.

After a casual encounter?

On a side note:

I actually posted an ad once just to see what would happen. I actually had really hot girl(like from a rap video) message me and send some pictures. I couldn’t believe it was real, but she was. We met at Buffalo Wild Wings the next day, had a couple drinks. I went back to her place, but I had second thoughts when we got there. She told me some story and how she went to NY to marry a guy for $20,000. That and she was lingerie model that belonged to some swinger club.

I also got a lot funny offers from dudes and desperate skanks. One woman was like “I got a hotel room, can we fuck tonight?” Needless to say, I was scared as hell.

As much as it pains me

to say it but this is why SF is talking about bringing in Paul Heyman and they should. For the simple reason that they don’t squander obvious opportunities. I like the fighters in SF by there is absolutely zero direction to how to build up fights. The last fight they properly built was Cyborg/Carano. That was done well and the results were solid. They haven’t gotten close to building a fight like that since. They have had some great fights happen but most with zero build. This, along with their horrendous production value, is what is holding them back. And it is holding them back in a major way.

The problem I have with it is that Mayhem is in no position to be dictating terms of the fight, why should Diaz move up in weight? He would have a better chance at pitching a Jacare rematch for the title but I have a feeling he wants nothing to do with Souza these days so yeah call out the smaller champion makes sense.

Good article, completely agree

They have a golden opportunity for a HUGE fight that sells itself, and they’re letting it pass. I can understand that some of us hardcore fans love to see the KJ rematch, but seriously, that one means nothing to more casual fans and lost it’s heat at least a year ago. While no doubt a good fight as well, it’s not going to do anywhere close to the numbers that the Mayhem fight could do with some marketing. This shouldn’t be a hard concept to understand, even if you’re not a Mayhem fan and don’t think it’s a good match-up or whatever. It’s the back story that sells this whole fight! To many more than just us on this here board. And a big fight that will garner attention and viewership is just what Strikeforce needs.

I would love to see this fight happen, it’s pissing me off that they’re letting it slide. Diaz fought twice last year at near MW, and now that this opportunity presents itself he’s suddenly exclusively WW? Don’t even start talking about that belt, it’s a worthless piece of junk and there are no credible contenders in that division. I like both guys but this ducking has Diaz losing some of his tough guy image. Agree to a catch-weight! Don’t be scared homie.

Strikeforce is officially retarded.

I mean come on you could have JZ vs Melendez and miller vs diaz on the same card, add 2 more filler fights (preferably MW tourney bouts that include santiago, lawler and whoever the hell else they have under contract) and you’ve got a sellable event.

What is wrong with these guys?

this is still a good fight, its just not THE fight people want. Its still a good rematch

KJ has really stepped it up, he looked absolutely top notch with his combos against gurgel….

maybe they figure KJ is a wild card, and they will get the fight in now before he starts boxing, and then they will attempt mayhem/diaz after that

I just dont get the weight move for Noons. I thought Noons Melendez and Mayhem/Diaz should have been the fights planned
