Who's Strikeforce Got Up Next for Nick Diaz: K.J. Noons or Jason "Mayhem" Miller? - [UPDATED]

Do we really have to explain why Diaz vs Miller is THE fight for Strikeforce to book on

Ben Fowlkes makes an impassioned case for Diaz vs Miller:

...this is a fight with built-in marketing materials. Remember that brawl on network TV? Because Gus Johnson and a bunch of Saturday night channel surfers do. All you'd need to do is play the clip, show the still shots of an angry Diaz with his fist cocked back, and let Miller rant into the camera during a pre-fight interview. A couple weeks of that kind of hype and even the most casual of fans will be willing to reschedule their wedding just to see this fight.

Perhaps more importantly, there's a serious lack of better options for Diaz right now. With the departure of Jay Hieron, who never got a chance to shine in Strikeforce, the organization's 170-pound class is pretty barren at the moment. The two best welterweights in the company, aside from Diaz, are probably Joe Riggs and Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos, neither of which have Miller's name recognition or drawing power.

Then Strikeforce sent out an email with Diaz vs Noons in the subject line but not the accompanying press release.

This tweet from Lorretta Hunt of Sherdog explains:

# @joshnason @JeremyHeavyMMA @MMANation It was a slip, but they're working on the bout right now. @strikeforce wants it for Diaz's 170-pd...

Oh snap RT @JeremyHeavyMMA: Hmm. Newest Strikeforce Insider newsletter says tickets going on sale for "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons." Oops.

Since Strikeforce effectively lacks a welterweight division I don't much care if Diaz moves up or down or if Noons moves up. I'm more interested in Mayhem vs Diaz, but both fights will be of interest to me as a fan.

There are plenty of other challengers for MW champ Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza so I don't mind Miller fighting at catchweights or other non-title track stuff. And with LW champ Gilbert Melendez out for a while, I don't mind Noons jumping up to fight with Diaz.

[UPDATE] - Mike Afromowitz, Strikeforce Director of Communications confirms Nick Diaz vs. K.J. Noons rematch:
"Yes, (Nick Diaz vs. K.J. Noons 2) this fight is set for Oct. 9."

It would also mean

we get to see more of Mayhem with his shirt and shit talking, which I actually kind of want to see

Check out this audio clip from The Jason Ellis Show. Mayhem calls in drunk from Japan and gives his report of the 2nd Jacare fight. Shit is hilarious.

I like both fights too, but I like Diaz / Miller a little more.

Plus I doubt Noons will happen. If he fights on Oct 09, that will only have been a 6 week layoff.

by truck on Aug 25, 2010 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions

He's going to have to move up

I would think he’d want to pack on some muscle, in which case, 6 weeks isn’t enough.

Mayhem should be facing Jacare

I’d love to see Noons vs Diaz II

I like your thinking. Its funny how everyone calls out Nick because he is the most relevant fighter in the organization. When he does crush all three their will be nothing left.

this is true all that he will have left to crush is bong rips!

If they want ratings

go with mayhem v diaz. Hell they need the viewers. Plus that rematch with noons should of happened 2 years ago.

by MediumNog on Aug 25, 2010 2:41 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Seriously this is a total toss-up for me...

Of course i would love to see Miller and Diaz settle their beef, actually it probably won’t settle anything but will be a great fight. I can see them going the Noons route, which helps to fill in their lack of challengers at 170 + Coker Post-Houston show in the interview with Ariel stated that apparently Noons is struggling with the cut to 155 if this is true. What better way to introduce yourself to the 170 division than to fight one of the P4P best fighters in Diaz.

by pRoXiMo on Aug 25, 2010 3:28 AM EDT reply actions

Looking at Polyhedron’s post, is Strikeforce still promoting fights in a one-sided manner? It doesn’t even list who Diaz is fighting so maybe I’m jumping the gun.

by Rufford on Aug 25, 2010 3:29 AM EDT reply actions

I would’nt say that it is one-sided…they have so far confirmed Nick Diaz for the show only (still seeing if Noons wants the fight first before Miller), is how i interpreted it. Miller and Noons are so marketable that i would really doubt they would go the Elite XC route in their promotion of Nick Diaz.

by pRoXiMo on Aug 25, 2010 3:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Really doubt it eh?

Please lashley getting promoted while griggs wasn’t even on the poster is exactly the same as the promotion of Koscheck right b4 he got knocked out to a complete unknown in Thiago. If there is an unknown fighter do you think he is being hyped as much as the known fighter, no he doesn’t. The unknown first has to win in the org b4 getting truly promoted.

by pRoXiMo on Aug 25, 2010 1:50 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Did you look at that poster?

That’s the event poster right there. thats 4 fights, with only 1 corner on the poster. come on.

Strikeforce has got to be thanking their lucky stars everyday that they have Nick Diaz

1) Book Mayhem vIf we learned anything from Rampage vs Rashad, it’s that fans love grudge matches. Thankfully Nick makes it so easy to promote his fights. That said, since this is the web, here would be my recommendations for what to do with these fighters:
s Diaz at catchweight now. It’s still fresh in everyone’s mind, and as Ben Fowlkes wrote you would only have to show a clip from the Nashville fight plus some Mayhem sound bites and you have perhaps the most anticipated fight Strikeforce can make outside of Fedor vs Overeem.

2) Book KJ Noons vs Gilbert Melendez when Gilbert comes back. It’s an easy to fight to sell: An Elite XC/Strikeforce unification bout with the added benefit of KJ Noons taking on Diaz’s buddy Melendez. Put Diaz front row (or better yet let him corner Gilbert) so that if Noons wins you set up a great champ vs champ fight with the bonus that DIaz will want to kick his ass for beating Gilbert too. Shit, even if Gil wins I’m sure Nick (or KJ’s dad) will do something to re-ignite the fued. Now you can start replaying all that great footage of Poppa Noons.

3) While waiting for Gil vs KJ, book a title defense for Diaz against Joe Riggs. This is a fight everyone has been waiting years for. I know, too much time has passed and no one cares anymore. All I say is Coker run this promo:

INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY
DOCTORS and RNS go about there business.
INT. HOSPITAL ROOM
ANGLE ON JOE RIGGS
Lying in bed, bruised and battered. He glances, angrily at
NICK DIAZ
Lying in the nearby bed. He is also bruise, battered, and even angrier, staring daggers back at Joe.
Their eyes have locked now, as a low GRUMBLE begin to grow from deep within both of them. Simultaneously the two start to rise from their beds.
INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY
A COMMOTION can be HEARD emitting from the open doorway. A Doctor quickly races past us, exiting through the doorway, followed by a panicked Nurse.
DOCTOR (OS)
Save it for the cage, you two!
ANNOUNCER’S VO
They did!
CUT TO the Strikeforce logo
ANNOUNCER’S VO
DIaz vs Riggs! Only on Showtime!

Now leak some TMZ news that you had to shoot Nick and Joe separately otherwise they would have started fighting at the shoot and you’ve got fans salivating to see this showdown. After that, you got the winner of Cyborg vs Daley (if it’s Daley you have some serious smack talk to sell), a rematch with Robbie Lawler, or go out and sign Karo for another grudge match. The possibilities are endless.

I'm confused.

Nick is scheduled to fight somebody for the WW title, right? So how can that be Mayhem?

I think noons would be a title fight, but mayhem wouldn’t, because mayhem can’t get down to 170.

Coker was talking about noons’ next fight being for a title, he just wasn’t sure if it would be 170 or 155

I do like that the two best options for #1 WW contender in Strikeforce

are guys whose last fights are at MW and LW respectively.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

by Monte Fisto on Aug 25, 2010 9:48 AM EDT reply actions

I dunno if Mayhem wants to go down to 170. He’s been taking all his fights 185 for the last couple years. I’m guessing it’ll be at 183 or whatever asinine catchweight.

"You hear people say, 'You're the greatest,' and all this stuff. It's BS. It's fake, it's all fake. You've just got to keep training as hard as you can. The only thing real is the fight, everything else is fake." - BJ Penn

Mayhem says he can't make 170.

And SF already announced Diaz vs. TBA for the title. Who was their number one contender again? And who’s after that? And what weight classes do they fight in? :-/

good potential card

I mean, who wouldn’t want to see this rematch? Last loss for Diaz since 07? Noons looked good this past weekend, and if SF got this going I think i’d def be into it.
