United Glory Welterweight Tournament Taking Shape
United Glory, the promoting arm of Dutch gym Golden Glory, has nearly rounded out the field for its 2010-2011 welterweight "world series," beginning at "Glory 12" on October 16 in Amsterdam.
Tatame provided this updated list of participants today, which adds newly-crowned Shooto 167-pound world champ Luis "Beição" Ramos to the mix:
Siyar Bahadurzada (17-4-1)
Luis "Beição" Ramos (16-5)
Roan "Jucão" Carneiro (13-8)
Nick Thompson (38-13-1)
David Bielkheden (16-7)
Sergey Golyaev (17-7)
Tommy Depret (6-3)
One additional fighter will be added to complete the eight-man bracket; winners move on to the semifinals on January 30. Names like Shinya Aoki, Paul Daley and Marius Zaromskis were initially floated, then withdrawn soon after the tournament was announced. Nick Thompson has been on the roster since the start, but suffered a brutal knockout at Sunday's SRC 14, his third straight loss.
Strikeforce women's 135-pound contender Marloes Coenen (17-4) is also set to participate at the same show against an opponent to be announced. The fight will come just one week after her title shot against Sarah Kaufman in San Jose.

Golyaev?
Let me test my memory – didn’t he controversially decision Gomi not too long ago?

I guess its competitive. You got a lot of guys who aren’t very good fighting one another, no one’s gonna be a wild underdog. Afghan Killa is the biggest guy and probably the promoter’s choice, Carniero is probably the best fighter. Not worth discussing who doesn’t belong in a tournament of second rate guys, you know?
I think it’s safe to say that Bahadurzada is definitely the promoter’s choice here.
The thing I like about these tournaments is they give the winner a nice little win streak and a shot to maybe get back/into someplace like the UFC or Strikeforce. Bielkheden has won three straight since getting cut from the UFC, Golyaev four straight since losing to Mitsuoka, etc.

You know what though – You have Bahadurzada just fight three of the first 6 names in a row, no tournament needed, you basically get to the same place as doing the tournament. I’d rather he just fight Bielkheden and Carniero. Maybe Ramos. Those guys are a legit stepping stone to the next level. Beating up Tommy Depret? Man I can watch M-1 if I want that.

I wish Zaromskis was fighting.
It would be a good opportunity for him to get some Ws
Can someone wake Thompson up and tell him he’s fighting?

I just never understand the hate a lineup like this gets.
Even if aoki, Daley or zaromskis are not in the tournament there is plenty of good fighters in the brackets. You have the young up and comers (siyar, Ramos), veterans (carnerio, Thompson), those who are trying to regain momentum….I personally am vere excited to see how this tourney unfolds. Screw all the haters, they ain’t real fans of mma anyways.

I personally don’t consider a guy who’s been fighting for 8-9 years to be a “young up and comer”. They’re guys that might be new names to some, but most of them have been taking fights outside of their home countries for awhile with mixed results.

last time i saw nick thompson
He had to be taken out of the ring on a stretcher because of a brutal knock out in mma.
And now he is going to kickbox professionally? GTFO of here!
