Trevor Sherman: The Man Training James Toney for Randy Couture at UFC 118
Michael David Smith talks to Trevor Sherman, James Toney's MMA trainer:
"It's never been about submissions," Sherman said. "It's been about submission defense. I'm not going to waste time on teaching James to submit Randy -- if we had a year and a half or two years that would be a great luxury, but we don't have all the time in the world. If I were training a jiu jitsu specialist I wouldn't spend a lot of time trying to teach him to knock someone out, what I'd do is train him to avoid getting knocked out while he gets into position for a submission."
But Sherman insists that Toney is doing a great job of learning takedown defense, learning escapes on the ground and learning how to adjust his stance so that he won't be susceptible to leg kicks. He says that Toney has become enough of a mixed martial artist that his chances of winning go beyond just his ability to land one lucky punch.
Sherman also insists that Toney is in good cardiovascular shape, although he's been expressly forbidden from discussing Toney's weight. And finally, Sherman claims that "win, lose or draw" James Toney will be back in the UFC.
I did a little research on Mr. Sherman and I have to say that this is another interesting career decision on the part of James Toney.
Toney initially was training with former Oscar De La Hoya and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson trainer Juanito Ibarra. Ibarra was a logical choice as he had big time boxing experience and MMA training experience. Toney's long time boxing trainer Freddie Roach has trained multiple MMA fighters in boxing, but never been the head trainer for an MMA fight. It's interesting to me that Roach isn't involved in this camp. Toney's relationship with Ibarra lasted from March to May.
More about Sherman and his karate mentor in the full entry including a video where they demo knife fighting techniques. It's not too far from a Three Stooges routine in its realism and applicability to MMA.
So about Trevor Sherman. Apparently he's the top student of one Jeff Speakman and together they have created "Kenpo 5.0":
Kenpo 5.0 is a highly effective Mixed Martial Art (MMA) combining American Kenpo Karate with elements of grappling and ground fighting into a formidable self defense system.
This system was developed by Mr Jeff Speakman (taught by Senior Grand Master Mr Ed Parker) and Mr Trevor Sherman (senior student of Mr Speakman and experienced ground fighter) in response to the changing style of street fighting. What Kenpo needed was an effective ground fighting module to be incorporated into the original art form. Kenpo 5.0 was born.
Sherman is also a behavioral psychologist and:
Under the direction of Mr. Speakman, Trever is a certified Defensive Tactics Instructor for the U.S. Government and Department of Justice teaching empty hand combat to the DEA, FBI and Border Patrol.
I'm a big admirer of Ed Parker and his Kenpo style, which played a huge role in popularizing Asian martial arts in the U.S., so it's interesting to me that Toney is training with a Kenpo guy. The most well known and successful Kenpo stylist in MMA history is long-time UFC champ Chuck Liddell. This is especially intriguing as Liddell's sprawl and brawl style proved to be Randy Couture's kryptonite in 2/3 of their legendary bouts. Of course, Liddell's background as a collegiate wrestler had more to do with that than his Kenpo and his trainer John Hackleman was much more of a competitive kickboxer than Jeff Speakman who appears to specialize in a rather silly brand of demonstrations.
I'd love to know where Sherman trained wrestling and grappling before bringing his expertise to Speakman to create Kenpo 5.0. If anyone knows more about Sherman or Speakman please share in the comments. I'm also very curious about their connection to M-1 Global.
I'd be much more confident in Toney's chances if he were training with a better known MMA camp or even Ibarra, but I just can't help myself -- I'm intrigued by this fight. And like B.J. Penn and probably Dana White, I'm rooting for James Toney.

The best part was when he took the guys knife, went around him, ducked down and shanked him in the groin area.. nice. Oh, and all the excessive spinning around and shit, this guy is bad-ass!

Aha, good catch. Didn’t think about that.. my knife fighting skills are somewhat limited.

I’m just going by the video and it is silly. My uneducated opinion is that you should stab someone in the kidneys if you want to kill them.
Yeah, it’s very silly. It’s kind of funny how often these “self-defense” systems first start out ok by showing you how to disarm or block an attacker, but then go on to show you murder / manslaughter in various ways.. often seems a tad excessive.

Yep, I’ve watched “Lethal Street Fighting” many times to great enjoyment :) He does kind of step over the line a lot of the time, but it’s Bas so I give him a pass and just laugh at it instead.

it adds a little more intrigue which is what this fight needs, but don’t expect Toney to be able to sprawl. Chuck had years of wrestling along with Kenpo so I don’t think a couple of months with this guy is gonna make much difference. Besides Toney has been fighting his game for a long time I wouldn’t be surprised if as soon as he gets in trouble he forgets everything he learned about grappling.

I'm pulling for Toney
I’d like to see some fireworks. I don’t think he has a snowball’s chance in hell, though. Doesn’t really matter where he trains.
Maybe if he does well, they can put him in the booth with Rogan. That would be awesome.

I haven't bothered watching most of Toney's smack talk
I heard some, and I imagine the rest is more of the same. I’d love to see him have a good showing, just for the sake of the Cotoure vs. Toney not looking like the UFC version of Minowaman vs. Hongman Choi.
Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?

Mental
Dont under estimate the mental aspect. Toney may seem flaky, but he seems to have put in the work, and he seems extremely confident. +Being a counterstriker is fitting for the matchup.
I really think people are underestimating his dirty boxing
Couture has to take this fight to the ground we all know that. But some people are talking that Randy needs to clinch. I mean I feel like a boxer is going to be right at home dirty boxing inside Coutures clinch. I dont know. Toney should lose, his smack talk is getting irritating but I still hope he wins for mult reasons.

There are severe limits to what boxers train to do in the clinch. It’s generally very unnatural for them to do real damage from that position.

Actually, if there ever was a clinch specialist in boxing, it would be james Toney
He is legendary for in close fighting with others that were known for it. And rarely did he ever get the worst of it when the fight went there, the examples are too numerous to mention. I think its a dangerous place for Couture to be.
Never seriously followed boxing so you may be right.
But Couture is the dirty boxing expert in the cage which I think could be another big obstacle for Toney If he’s got his back against the cage that would probably effect his punching motions don’t you think? Regardless I think Couture will be fine unless this fight somehow turns in to a boxing match.

by doonerthesooner on Aug 24, 2010 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, I watched most of his Major fights
And he was not adverse to holding and hitting, using his head, shoulders and elbows either. And his uppercut in close was by far his most devastating punch, most of his notable KO’s were by that. It should be noted as well that that aspect of his game is likely even better since he has been a heavyweight, because his body shape with the extra weight makes him harder to hold onto and more slippery.
Hard to throw an uppercut if someones got both underhooks, but yeah Couture definitely can’t get sloppy. We’re fooling ourselves any way Couture puts him on his ass first 15 seconds of the fight.
Ride the Tiger!
by doonerthesooner on Aug 24, 2010 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions
I would not assume that underhooks can be gained easily
Or that he will go down in 15 seconds. Well you can if you want. But I give Toney a 25% chance to win now, enough to put some good money on it at 7-1.
Your confidence is inspiring but your on your own with that one.
Like I said above who knows if when Toney gets into a bad spot and all the months of training he’s picked up go out the window. And his clinch work in boxing doesn’t involve fingers which I think will be a big deal. Couture has bitched great clinch fighters in the clinch.

Love how his bio says....
As an internationally recognized martial arts and action film star Jeff has starred in over eight films including “The Perfect Weapon”, “Street Knight”, “The Expert”, “Deadly Outbreak”, “Escape From Atlantis”, “Scorpio One”, “Land of the Free”, “Memorial Day” and “Running Red”. …
Uh, that would be nine Mr. Speakman… Can’t believe we lost touch after The Perfect Weapon; which I am now going to re-watch for unintentional comedic value.
this is amazing
I went and searched all the taglines for these films you listed. They are predictably awesome:
The Perfect Weapon: “No gun. No knife. No equal.” OR “Just try him.” I like the first one personally.
Street Knight: “One Man. No Limits”
The Expert: “When. Revenge. Isn’t. Enough.”
Deadly Outbreak: “The Fear Is Spreading”
Escape From Atlantis: “The Greatest Adventure Is Finding Your Way Home” The movie has the potential to be really bad based off the movie poster.
Scorpio One: “At the edge of space, patriotism and terrorism are about to cross the line”. Color me intrigued.
Land of the Free: “One Nation. Under God. Under Fire. Under Siege.”
Memorial Day: “There’s only one man you can count on when the final countdown begins.”
Running Red: "The business of killing just got personal… "
Kendall Grove is my second favorite fighter. Everyone else is my favorite.

This Escape from Atlantis sounds like the worst movie concept in history…. Will be scouring youtube for a clip of that one.
That looked about as legitimate as a Jean-Claude Van Damme knife fight in Timecop

see around 1:20 – JCVD basically holds the knife up and his ‘opponent’ just swings for that.

I can’t stop watching this. I really like how the video the guy on the receiving end goes down after most of the attacks to show the viewer how effective these techniques are.
I also like how he managed to throw in a bitch slap at around the 42 second mark.

I predict Toney by TKO (dizziness). A few of those pirouettes and Randy will be out of it.

I've got an article in an old aussie Martial Arts mag called Blitz
It outlines the history of Kempo 5.0 and a little bit of Shermans involvement. Here’s a few interesting snippets.
As the leader of American Kempo Karate Society, Jeff Speakman’s first response to learn all he could about the methods of MMA in order to ssess its suitability for the street, where even the limited rules of the cage do not apply. To this end, his senior student Trevor Sherman set out on the ultimate research mission – to become a cage fighter and MMA referee.
Trevor Sherman went off into that world and became a competitive cage-fighter and referee to bring back that idea of fighting back to Kempo for analysis.
I did a search and found nothing of him doing any refeering four bouts nor any fights recorded in the Fight Finder.
In Kempo we train to survive
Food goes in here
