I thought Anderson was out of training until early 2011…how’s he gonna have enough time to get ready for this fight by February?

I’ll wait till Dana white or another source confirms this, I mean it was a great fight but Sonnen lost in a convincing fashion it wasn’t a BS decision like BJ/Edgar or Machida/Shogun 1

I gotta agree. I’d rather see Belfort and Silva next. Let Sonnen sit one or two out and then set the rematch up.

I agree with this. Sonnen had his shot and blew it. I don’t see any need for an immediate rematch.

Sonnen won 90%

of that fight, and then made one mistake. That mistake was capitalised on brilliantly, but that doens’t mean that Sonnen lost in concinvcing fashion. Had he just kept up the pressure properly for one minute more, then he most likely would be the champion right now.

This fight will be another good one but will end in much the same way. Not being able to finish is an absolute killer in 5 round match-ups.

I think if he gets a little upgrade on his cardio he can continue to posture up in the later rounds like he did in the first three. That helps him stay out of submission danger (i think) and drop big lefts.

What killed him even more so may have been his failure to continue to pass to half guard. You can get triangled or armbarred from there. He was doing so actively in the first round but then he kind of forgot about it. He’s probably simply not comfortable with guard passing, it appears.

I don’t see anything inevitable about that Sonnen dominated that fight and let himself down, next time he’ll know when to push the pace and when to play safe. Whenever the rematch happens Sonnen will finish what he started, Silva’s time is up now it’s just a matter of counting down the months.

What do you mean let himself down?

Sonnen has an embarrassing tendency to get submitted in any fight he’s in. Come on if Marquardt wasn’t so bloody he’d have tapped Sonnen out too after experiencing practically the same thing.

They might as well do Chael Sonnen vs. Denis Kang to see who will get submitted first.

not fair to Belfort

But the UFC knows Sonnen has a better chance ofl beating Silva, and the mission is to get rid of Silva.

I don’t think anyone can claim unfair for Belfort when he’s never fought at 185 (plus he said he’s not waiting to fight Silva).

The UFC does not want to lose arguably the best P4P fighter in the world. Dana has said as much.

And a rubber match between those 2 would sell like gangbusters. So yeah, there would be a rematch.

Good move.

Sonnen dominated Silva in a way nobody else has and deserves this rematch much the way Shogun deserved it against Machida. Now Silva won without a decision, but both Shogun and Chael broke apart myths about their opponents perceived invincibility. Both deserve rematches.

As for Vitor, well . . . he needs to fight a fight in the UFC middleweight division before he gets a title shot.

I can conceive a Super Bowl show having Silva-Sonnen and Lesnar/Cain vs. JDS.

Possibly the single most rational statement on an internet forum ever

Manning is a far superior qb, when Brady won the Superbowls he had a fantastic defense behind him. Peyton had a middle of the road, and that’s being generous, defense. Football is a team sport beyond all other team sports.

by Kidroll on Aug 24, 2010 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I was on the Brady bandwagon

Because he did not have a star receiving corp and literally found success as soon as Bledsoe got knocked out. Then I saw how he handled pressure and how he would respond to blitzes. The clincher for me was how the Colts rallied to make Super Bowl XLI. Manning was laying an egg in the 1st and came back to play the 2nd half of his life. Ever since then Manning has outplayed Brady with the exception of 18-1.

When both men retire no NFL historian will claim defenses changed their tactics and preparation because of Tom Brady.

by SSreporters on Aug 24, 2010 1:09 AM EDT up reply actions

brady is kinda scared back there

The blueprint for shutting that whole offense down is just to hit brady, no hurries or pressures, just hit the guy a few times and he gets gun shy. I mean it’s not like he’s taken a whole bunch of punishment behind a shitty line. (see david carr, drew bledsoe (post buffalo year 1)

by Kidroll on Aug 24, 2010 1:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

The Jets look like they are an overrated team (even though I love the LaDanian and Cromartie pickups) that will probably fold under the NY media pressure cooker. I really like the Dolphins in the AFC East. Chad Henne has a cannon and the aquisition (sp I know, its the wonderful public school upbringing) of Brandon Marshall makes that offense pretty potent all of the sudden.

Lesnar has to be the most identifiable fighter for football fans besides Herschel Walker. PPVs featuring the guy double and triple other events for sales. Football fans, primed for entertainment, will be sucked up by the UFC promotion machine.

This combination will create a perfect storm that will propel the UFC (and MMA) into the realm of the established professional sports. The UFC will implode under the pressure of success and we will end up with 50 M-1s trying to run the MMA world.

I reserved judgement on the fight until I saw how he fought Sonnen. Upon further review it would be one-sided instead of a coin-flip where we would’ve had no clue how it would end. After seeing Sonnen handle Andy we know what GSP would do to him.

If they wanted to do Andy/GSP they should’ve done it in 2008 or 2009.

Right now?

Striking (this includes kicking, punching, and MT): Advantage Silva

Striking Defense: Silva’s never been knocked out in his MMA career and has never been completely rocked. Advantage Silva.

Wrestling: Advantage GSP

Takedown Defense: Advantage GSP

Submissions: Advantage GSP

GnP: Advantage GSP

Score is 4-2 GSP.

Probably

Better athlete. More well rounded. Better at transitioning in between and adapting the various aspects of MMA together. Better game planner. Better cardio. Better wrestler. Better overall ground game. Better TDD. A greater ability to get off his back (in the rare event that finds himself there). BJJ is probably a wash. I wouldn’t think speed or strength are far in the favour of either one as well.

Silva is the better standing striker and hits harder with any limb probably, but there’s not a huge chasm between them. If Chael can strike with Anderson that long and not get KOed, i love GSP’s chances to not lose the fight standing and even score some points. Yeah yeah, rib injury, i know, but GSP is a much better striker then Chael so i’m thinking that it roughly balances out. Anderson also has the better chin, but again, despite the prevailing opinion, GSP has a very good chin too. For convincing, go re watch the Alves fight. Thiago landed 2 or 3 very clean power shots that didn’t even phase GSP. And it goes without saying, Thiago hits very hard.

I really see no reliable avenue to victory for Silva in this fight. Watching what Chael did to him i don’t see why GSP wouldn’t dominate the fight, considering that GSP is better then Chael at what he does best, and better in every other area as well (including sub defense from guard, Chael).

There’s the issue of size, but i don’t think that would be such a huge deal.

Of course, this is all just how i personally see it, and i’m obviously not an expert.

You've pretty much summed up my thoughts about the fight

There are still enough people that think Silva would win though to make it a buzz worthy fight. Moreover if GSP loses, especially at MW, people will jus say (wrongly) that he was too small for MW and quickly forget about the loss.

I personally think Sonnen would lay a whooping on GSP — and of the two — I think that he is the much more powerful wrestler. Frankly, I think it would be more interesting to watch GSP fight Sonnen than to watch him fight Silva. After all, his avenue to victory against Silva is to replicate Sonnen’s wrestling driven dismantling of him, with the possible twist of a few submission attempts mixed in. But I don’t think it’s reasonable to believe that he would be as effective as Chael in that regard due to his great size disadvantage. And to argue that he would get the better of Silva standing over five rounds is, I think, far-fetched. I suspect that the reason this match has not been made is due to a reluctance on GSP’s part. He can do everything perfectly in that fight and come out a lot worse than Sonnen did.

by Charlie Custer on Aug 24, 2010 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Sonnen is a little heavier than GSP (who is himself heavier than Anderson entering the cage). That is about it.

GSP is a far superior MMA Wrestler and would fare better against Anderson than Sonnen did. Sonnen is an elite wrestler, but he is more old-school mark coleman than he is a prototype MMA Wrestler like GSP.

GSP has more effective takedowns, equal or better top control, far more effective submission defense, submission offense, and positional improvement skills, as well as better, more diverse GnP…

I don't know.

I think GSP is all of the things you said — against welterweight competition. It’s hard for me to believe, however, that he could do a better job wrestling than Chael did against Marquardt, Okami, and Silva.

As far as submission defense…It’s true, one cannot for a single second imagine GSP, a thinking-man’s fighter, suffering those kind of lapses against anyone.

It is a waste of time

Immediate rematches are for people who were screwed over by the refs, commission, judges, etc. Not people who tapped. This is 100% a business decision because it’s so hard to sell an Anderson Silva main event.

I have to agree with you and BJJDenver but this is still a compelling rematch. I think a healthy Silva will destroy Sonnen. I buying into the rib story.

by Rufford on Aug 24, 2010 1:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Who knows about the rib stuff, it is entirely possible. But on the immediate rematch thing, why not just so that we can see a great fight again, its a bit different but fedor nog 3 really didn’t have to happen, but it was just a fight everyone wanted to see again, probably the same sort of deal for silva sonnen 2

by Kidroll on Aug 24, 2010 1:17 AM EDT up reply actions

I got a weak point here because I do want to see the rematch. I don’t like the rematch being used without a solid logical reason. The first fight was decisive.

But, who else is going to push Silva hard? Let’s see what the freak can do if he’s prepared for the badass wrestler.

This is the closest I’ll come to complaining about this potential match.

by Rufford on Aug 24, 2010 1:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree from a competition way of looking at things that yes an immediate rematch kinda screws everyone else. But for the fans, and the PPV buys, it will be a phenomenal deal if the fight is nearly as good as the first. Remember that a promoter/matchmakers job is to interest the fans and non fans first and foremost

by Kidroll on Aug 24, 2010 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Fedor vs. Nog 3 absolutely had to happen. They were coming off a NC which itself came off a streak of wins for both of them. Silva vs. Sonnen 2 would be coming off a submission victory for Silva. Not anything close to the same thing.

and then where you had 2 opponents for silva you are down to 1, great idea!!.

The winner of belfort/sonnen creates 1 contender. This way you have 2 contenders, soennen and the the winner of belfort’s next match.

This has to be taken into account, especially in the UFC’s MW division, where finding contenders for the belt has been a major problem over the last few years.

by Phildo on Aug 24, 2010 7:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Even if you don't care about finding legitimate contenders

the repercussions of the rematch could further sideline the title fight for others due to injury or Sonnen winning. Because; let’s say the unthinkable happens and Sonnen finishes a fight in the UFC. Even if he does that, they have to do a third one because Sonnen got his rematch after tapping.

I don't think it's about...

the typical “being screwed over or contreversial decision” such as edgar penn or shogun machida, I think honestly with that fight, Chael proved he was still a number 1 contender, even though he tapped because he dominated for so long. I think it’s fair.

by Beartrap on Aug 24, 2010 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Lots of immediate rematches happening

But i think this one really makes sense. On the one hand Sonnen was dominating that fight. He owned Silva for like 97% of the fight. It could have been a fluke that he lost like that. He deserves another shot at the title that possibly should be his.

And on the other hand, Anderson is saying he had an injury. As if to imply he wouldn’t have been dominated if he was healthy. That could very well be the case, and he deserves an opportunity to prove that too and get some redemption.

And it’s a sequel to one of the best fights in recent memory. Can’t go wrong with that.

The Brady/Manning argument is preposterous.

I give Manning his just due — he’s great — but when comparing him to Brady, always keep in mind where they play. Manning is half the quarterback when he’s not playing in a climate-controlled dome. Same goes for Brees. The fact that they play up to sixty-percent of their games in a dome inflates their numbers tremendously. What Brady has done in some of the worst conditions in the NFL separates him from Manning and all but a few, IMO. And it’s Manning, not Brady, who has a history of coming up personally short — as in he doesn’t play close to the level he’s led most to expect he would — in big games time after time, and often at home in the playoffs.

As for the rematch? It’s the way to go, but I think it will a tougher road for Sonnen this time around.

by Charlie Custer on Aug 24, 2010 8:17 AM EDT reply actions

Preposterous...

I wouldn’t go so far to say that Manning is half the QB when playing in the elements, see my above comment on the differences in defenses (whatever the major sports media says about Tom Brady the Patriot teams were all defensive powerhouses, that stuff kinda helps out a QB) not to say Tom Brady isn’t a very good QB, but as SSreporter said in 20 years nobody will remember Brady beyond the rings, Manning will be remembered as the guy every team had to change how they played to deal with. Besides, playing in the elements is completely overrated. See Texas High School Football (also known as the gold standard to the uninitiated) for examples of this.

by Kidroll on Aug 24, 2010 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions

The elements are of incredible consequence in football,

particularly for quarterbacks. To me, that’s just a no brainer. I went too far and implied that comparing Brady/Manning and their accomplishments is preposterous — not so. To me, Manning at his best has always made the difficult throws look routine. I think he’s just a better passer — at his frequent best — than Tom Brady. But he’s not at his best in the biggest games, I do believe that, while I’ve seen Tom Brady go beyond himself in those situations many times. And I think that is what gives Brady the slight edge. When Brady finally had weapons on offense comparable (but not equal) to those of Manning’s, he immediately put up record-breaking numbers. Ironically, this was during the twilight of an incredibly tough group of Patriot defender’s careers, and the team has, after the remarkable undefeated run, been a little less dominant. Of course, Brady’s blown out knee didn’t help matters — something to keep in mind as Manning has been touched about eight times in the last decade. This fact is of course partly due to his quick release and anticipation, but also because of an offensive line that has likewise been healthy and incredibly consistent. Anyway, I give them both their due and will even agree to call it a wash. BTW, Texas is not the gold-standard of high-school football, at least not for quarterbacks. That would be southwestern PA.

by Charlie Custer on Aug 24, 2010 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

rec'd for the fantastic response

and for my disjointed response, again I will refer back to the differences in defensive play on those two teams…you obviously know the game so I’m not going to go into the intricacies of it all but really quick, the score and the clock dictate many play calls on offense as well as having a defense that you have more confidence in. See the belichick 4th down call this last year for an example of it. just how I see it. And I am biased in this way I think that peyton is the best qb I’ve seen play.

And BTW Texas HS football is the real thing. USA Today highly overrates PA football IMO. Look at TCU, they get to recruit out of the most fertile football area in the nation (DFW) where many top D1 schools do most of their recruiting (Oklahoma, Texas, LSU just to name 3) and they seem to do pretty well. Hell they got LaDanian somehow.

It is beyond me why anyone wouldn’t want to see a repeat of such an entertaining matchup, with extra hype now added due to the nature of rematches.

I'm not interested in an immediate rematch at all.

Penn vs. Edgar 2, is warranted because of the BS decision. Sonnen tapped and that’s the end of the story. Sonnen said that he’s fine with fighting before Anderson is healed. Belfort vs. Okami for contendership and Sonnen vs. Bisping for shits and giggles.

Statement a little extreme?

I can’t see having NO interest in a rematch between these two.

I think the two match-ups you mention would be great, particularly the Sonnen-Bisping fight. That fight has a chance to be funnier than Fletch. But I definitely would be interested. And I don’t think Chael will redeem himself. I truly think he squandered his one shot at handling Silva. But why would you not want to find out for sure?

by Charlie Custer on Aug 24, 2010 10:57 AM EDT reply actions

I’m not overly thrilled about a rematch right away, but worse things have happened. If Sonnen does the exact same thing as the first match but for 25 minutes instead of 23, what the hell do they do? They can’t make a third one right away.

Lightning only strikes once. I hope I’m wrong, but I think the rematch is going to be kind of a disappointment (unless Sonnen gets a flying armbar or something).
