Strikeforce Houston Preview: KJ Noons, Jorge Gurgel Prepare for Potentially Explosive Fisticuffs

Noons_vs_gurgel_medium In lightweight action, Strikeforce has put together quite the crowd pleaser as former EliteXC Lightweight champion KJ Noons (9-2, 1-0 SF) will battle UFC veteran Jorge Gurgel (13-6, 1-1 SF) in a battle of brawling pugilists. Noons, a former professional boxer, will make his third appearance since his return to the sport back in March. Both Andre "Dida" Amade and Conor Heun served as respectable tests to Noons to help him shake out the rust of the layoff, but he's now aiming to become relevant once again with a victory on Saturday night.

UFC veteran Jorge Gurgel certainly won't make it an easy task. Dubbed by some fans as one of the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu talents in the lightweight division in the early days of his career, Gurgel made a complete 180° turn in his style once he arrived in the UFC back in June of 2006. With his gameplan always flying out the window once the first punch landed, Gurgel aimed to please crowds with his fearless punching and constant aggression, earning him two 'Fight of the Night' honors over the course of his seven-fight UFC stint.

The enigma of Gurgel's style of fighting has the potential to create exciting, fan-friendly battles, but it has served as a disadvantage for Gurgel before the fight even begins. Not only are promoters pitting him against punch-happy brawlers, but almost none of his opponents expect the ground to be a factor. Gurgel doesn't help matters much by doing exactly what his opponents expect, and it could prove to be his demise in this match-up as well.

This wouldn't be a Gurgel fight without the mandatory speech about how he's changing. MMAFighting.com has the quote:

"People haven't seen a healthy Jorge Gurgel lately. Knee injuries have limited me a lot. It kept me from doing much wrestling or BJJ in my last five fights. People don't know about that, but I was very limited. I had no choice but to stick to striking. I'm healthy and ready to stick to my game plan this time. I'm ready to finally start listening to my corner."

I suppose injuries are something that probably limited Gurgel's abilities on the ground, and he's certainly never been the type of guy to back away from an opportunity to punch someone out. Will Jorge Gurgel finally stick to his gameplan in this fight? Don't hold your breath.

Noons is going to be the better puncher in this fight, but Gurgel has the kicking prowess to be what Conor Heun wasn't... effective in keeping Noons off balance consistently over the course of the fight. Heun used kicks early to stop Noons from rattling off combination after combination, and it was effective for the first five minutes. Unfortunately, Heun's rigid stance and movement made it quite easy for Noons to see a pattern. Gurgel is a bit more fluid in his movement, and he's much quicker than Heun. That should make a stand-up war in this bout more interesting.

Star-divide

Maybe I'm feeling a little crazy, perhaps I've had too much caffeine today... but I'm going to believe Jorge Gurgel. I know, I know... its like believing anyone here actually cares about Justin Bieber. I think he'll actually try to get this fight to the floor, but I also think Noons has an underestimated defensive game. While Heun isn't a top notch NCAA champion wrestler, he is a fairly large, bulky lightweight who can power through opponents. Noons was able to scramble rather effectively and sprawl on many occasions to stop him. Gurgel, in my opinion, has a weaker base for takedowns, and I think he'll find it difficult to implement the gameplan he wants.

In the end, I think Gurgel will need to resort to his old ways and punch with Noons, and unfortunately -- that's not going to get him a victory on Saturday night. Noons' speedy jab absolutely devastated Heun over three rounds, and unless Gurgel can kick effectively to take the wind out of Noons' sails -- Noons should take this via decision.

I'd vote for Gurgel...

But since he doesn’t care much for using his jiu jitsu, and I’m sure he’ll slug, gotta go with Noons.

I'd love to see Noons/T. Griffin

I think that would be a hell of an evenly matched, fast paced striking battle. If Griffin drops one more it could end up coming to fruition on a Strikeforce card, although I wouldn’t wish that on Tyson.

Back on topic, Gurgel tries one takedown early on, fails, falls back to the old STANDNBANG strategy, gets his face cut all to hell and drops a decision.

I know it’s unfortunate, because of his submission skills. I always think how easier his fights with Halverson, Sairiva, and Abbadi could have been if he didn’t trade.

And if anyone is wondering about the roots of Gurgel's knee problems, watch

this.

Yep, and it’s also one of the dumbest displays of aggression I’ve ever seen. Gurgel runs across the ring, and immediately goes from predator to prey.

Probably just confident that he would be able to defend against Imanari's sub based attack.

And who’s to blame him, Gurgel had the better BJJ pedigree going in.

Except Imanari was well-known as a leg submission guy, and Gurgel basically gave him his leg. Flat out idiotic.

I don't get

why everyone hates on KJ. Sure he’s a bit douchey, but he always puts on exciting fights. And besides, everyone is friends with at least a few douches…

I honestly think there is a segment of the MMA fanbase (not saying this is everyone who doesn’t like him) who really dislikes him for daring to care about his boxing career as well as his MMA career.

It’s probably more due to the fact that dudes who hate him probably had their ex-girlfriends stolen from “Sunshine” types. LOL.

This

Is the best theory I’ve heard so far…

Him, Josh Thomson, Roger Huerta… little pretty boys that can kick your ass aren’t very popular.

by John Nash on Aug 20, 2010 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Huerta, sure...

But is Thomson really that popular? Besides, guys like that are more popular with the ladies. Really, I think guys are just jealous that their girlfriends would rather be mounted by the Huerta’s of the world than their sad-sack-of-shit boyfriends.

GSP on the other hand – even the dudes want a piece of that ass.

Honestly, Huerta may have escaped hate from guys everywhere by knocking out a huge ass football player in defense of a woman. Even dudes can’t be hating on that.

I don’t like Noons either but he’s going to knock Gurgel senseless.

Gurgel might already be senseless

because if he had any fucking sense, he’d use his jits.

boxing match

Noons wins this, since Gurgel wouldn’t use his BJJ if his life depended on it.

The most annoying thing about this fight...

…is the people who are pretending that if Gurgel were to try to get the fight to the ground he’d win. Noons trounces every version of Jorge Gurgel.

I don't think they're pretending

They’re just letting their Noons hate blind them.

This would be an explosive fisticuffs match

If Gurgel had explosive hands.

Noons wins it.

noons stand up was not very impressive last fight

this guy is a pro boxer but he tends to brawl a lot IMO with Conner i expected him to completely dominate but he kept getting caught maybe he was just having difficulty with the transition from boxing to mma i hope to see some improvement in this one because i liked him when he fought elite xc

by Dr Tyronious on Aug 20, 2010 2:02 PM EDT reply actions

There’s a major difference between both sports though. Noons has to account for the possibility of a takedown against Heun or anyone, and that affects your stance and technical ability to a point. Obviously, other fighters have figured it out, but the majority of fighters have to account for it.

Noons wasn’t great technically. But he certainly showed the speed that he has as a boxer. He pumped that jab off Heun’s face constantly, right through his defense. It was almost comical to watch.

He definitely needs to improve though, and I agree — he wasn’t overly impressive in his last fight. Definitely had some holes to fill.

I like this match up a lot

But i really think Noons takes it. Definitely worth watching, especially to see if it ever reaches the ground level or if they’ll just be throwing punches. I agree with Tyronious that noons standup wasn’t great last fight, but I suspect he’s trained it up, and will end up in that stance for much of this fight.
