Unbeaten Olympic judo convert Rick Hawn (8-0) punched out Shonie Carter (49-24-7, 1 NC) at 4:08 of round two in their main event bout at Triumph Fighter 3 in New Hampshire on Saturday.
According to Mark Daniels of the Boston Herald, the Massachusetts-based welterweight has "caught the attention of UFC matchmaker Joe Silva" and could be headed to the big show soon.

Wasn't he supposed to face Estima not too long ago?
"Sometimes hype just ain't enough." - Jens Pulver on his win over BJ Penn
And a lot of people were favoring Estima because he was the “bigger” name. Personally, I thought Hawn was going to pull the “upset”.
It would have been close. A great top game and heavy GnP vs. a sick guard — that’s a coin toss to me.
I just don’t know how well Estima’s BJJ would transfer over to MMA being that he has never competed in MMA. I was favoring Hawn because he actually had MMA experince, plus the fact that he competed in Judo at the highest level.
All true, but....
Hawn was never a world beater in Judo. He was just good enough to get on the US team.
Unfortunately, as far as talent goes, American Judo ranks somewhere between American soccer and chinese hockey.
very interesting prospect
love me some judo guys! wonder if he’s your usual judoka coming into MMA — ie Yoshida, Sokoudjou — or if he’s more Karo style?

He’s a hybrid for sure. I’ve seen him hit some big trips/tosses in fights, but almost all his wins are by TKO. Scary dude.
I’m a huge fan of judokas myself. Been hoping he gets signed to the UFC for a while now, so I hope this is legit.

The problem
is the political nature of international Judo (don’t get me started). Going into MMA is a surefire way to get shunned and lose sponsorships.
I'd read it

Do it
Do it NAO
To some extent I’m wondering whether Rick Hawn is from what I’m calling the “Gokor school” like Karo Parisyan, or whether he’s limited like Sokoudjou claimed about judo. (See Parisyan’s distaste for Sokoudjou’s own talking down of judo, after Barnett asked at a Impact FC presser.)
Karo was Karo
you would never see someone grappling like him in a Judo school. Arguably, you would never see it in BJJ schools either. He came from the Gokor/Lebell lineage, with all that catch wrestling mixed up with Judo. Its a shame he self-destructed.
No, imagine Soukoudjou with a growing BJJ game (and a lot more heart) and you get Hawn.
He's more of a Lombard
Stays standing to get the top position and prefers to deliver strikes.
If you look him up on YouTube, you’ll see he really loves the drop seoi, but that’s a really tough move to pull off without the gi.
just googled “drop seoi” and that’s yet another thing i was taught in HS wrestling that i now find out comes from judo. my coach must have been a secret judoka or something, though he never used any japanese terms.
you’re right it’s different and a bit more difficult without the gi because you don’t have that supplemental collar grip along with the arm-drag. it can be done though, just slightly modified into pure arm-drag hip toss.

as far as i know
we gave wrestling the drop seoi and a few trips, but wrestling gave us the morote gari and kata guruma.
double leg and fireman carry
kinda blown my mind right now with the whole chicken and egg concept. you should drop some knowledge on some shit nerd
ufc fan boy all the way
You're right
Man, that’s an arm drag!
