Ring Psychology Exclusive: King Mo Lawal Says "F**k the Fans"
Strikeforce Light Heavyweight champion "King" Muhammed Lawal joined us for Ring Psychology days before his main event battle with the tough, yet unknown, Rafael Cavalcante. Mo talked about his YouTube addiction, what he's learned from some of judo's best, and his relationship with the fans. Some of the highlights:
King Mo on the Fans: Some are cool, some are idiots. They're fans-they don't know what the f**k they are talking about. That's why I'll say it again: 'f**k the fans.' A lot of them ain't educated. They're just bandwagon jumpers...
King Mo Explains Wrestling Pedigrees: For the most part, every American wrestler you see that wrestles freestyle or greco-roman wrestled folkstyle (as well). Greco is upper body. Freestyle...comparing freestyle to greco is like comparing boxing to muay thai. In freestyle you can attack more ways and greco is only upper body. You've got the explosive style that me and Daniel Cormier have. You have the funk style that Ben Askren has. And then you've got the solid position style. There aren't too many fighters from a solid position style who have transferred over to MMA. Folkstyle is kind of like college. It's like college man. Then you've got the NFL which is like freestyle and greco. It's a different level. Because when you wrestle freestyle and greco, you're wrestling the world's best. When you wrestle collegiately, you're only wrestling college's best.
Mo on Fighting in Japan: They left me with the damn hospital bills not being paid...they didn't pay for it so I'm not going to go back and fight for them. I tore my ACL in the fight against Kawamura and they wouldn't pay for the surgery. So, it's whatever man...I'm not going to fight in Japan unless I'm getting paid upfront.
Lawal defends his title for the first time Saturday on Showtime. Also on the show were Fraser Coffeen from Head Kick Legend, discussing the latest from K-1 and the struggles at FEG, and Strikeforce's Miesha Tate, who recently earned a title shot in the 135 pound weight class. You can download the show from I-Tunes or listen live by heading over to our friends at Angry Marks. Thanks for tuning in. Feedback welcome.

Totally agree
He may not express himself in the most “P.C” fashion but the dude speaks the truth. Plus his knowledge of MMA, beyond wrestling, is impressive. True student of the game.

i don’t care for that whole fuck the fans mentality
i agree that alot of people are ignorant
and i agree that alot of fans are “haters”
but
we do kinda pay his bills feed his family and buy his “bling”
so in my humble opinion he should have a little more respect

He seems to get a disproportionately high amount of people hating on him
The problem is he’s a non-UFC guy, and he beat the poster boy for non-UFC LHWs…so all of those fans are irked at him for beating Sweet Sassy Mousasi and lashing out.
If I got as much shit as him I’d probably say “fuck you all” too. The fans that are actually his fans know he’s not talking about them.
we do kinda pay his bills feed his family and buy his "bling"
No we don’t. We feed Scott Coker’s family and buy his bling. Scott Coker is the guy who feeds Mo’s family.
Mo is being smart about this. There are two ways to become a draw in this sport …. become an object of adulation or an object of derision. Mo knew which way the wind was blowing and saw that fans did not love him, so he embraced the dark side and does everything he can to enrage the fans, and it appears to working.
It’s not all that different from the game that Chael Sonnen worked. He’s not as witty, but he is just as effective at getting fans to care about him. Whether fans like him or hate him is immaterial. All that matters is that they care about him. Better to be hated than to be ignored.
without the fans there would be no strikeforce
or ufc or any other mma promotion
the reason coker makes money is because fans watch or go to the shows
if there were no fans neither coker nor mo would have a job
so yes we do pay his bills feed his family and buy his bling

I can't stand....
This mentality by fans: “We pay his salary, he should treat us better”
That is total bull crap. Athletes, entertainers, celebrities don’t owe the general public crap. Thats like saying if you work for Burger King, you owe it to every person you meet to ‘have it your way’ whether you’re on the clock or not because they may have eaten there.
The only public figures that owe you anything are politicians. If your mayor says “f*ck the voters” then you vote him out. Otherwise he, and every other pro athlete, is just some guy doing a job that happens to be televised. And you don’t own him!!!!
Where do you work John?
Because by your logic, if I ever purchased any good or service from that company I “feed your family and buy your bling”
Judging by your word choice, I can tell what your problem is, so I’ll say it again, YOU DON’T OWN HIM, or any other professional…cough, cough, Black, cough…athlete.
I agree with King Mo
A lot of, if not most, fans are bandwagon jumping idiots that aren’t educated about the sport.
He’s talking main about the casuals (in regards to education), but the bandwagon jumping is straight at the hardcores.

in fact unless i’m mistaken it’s referred to as “cheap heat” in pro wrestlin jargon
since you were pointing out connections between mma and pro wrestling in the pro wrestling did NOT sell ufc 117 shit talking did fan post i figured i’d mention yet another case where a fighter is acting like a pro wrestling heel

I don't think Mo is "heeling", I think he's just saying what he feels
His “character” is not a heel. He’s a JYD type babyface, dancing and having fun with the people. Now, if he wasn’t to heel it up and turn his “King” gimmick into circa 1991 “Macho King” Randy Savage, I’m all for it.
Remember folks, I didn’t make the pro wrestling connection here.

however i do think king mo is a prime example of a fighter who acts very much like a pro wrestler from his ring entrance to his persona to his behavior in and out of ring it screams pro wrestling
once again it doesn’t bother me though and honestly i kind of like the theatrics it reminds me of japanese mma which i love

I got into a lovely Twitter conversation with Mo
Because I asked him a question, he proclaimed that I sounded “bitchmade,” and then said that I must not understand MMA because I was asking for his opinion.
He finally settled done once I pointed out that disrespecting fans who wanted his opinion was bad form and then answered his trivia question (“What’s a lockdown and what heavyweight used it in a title fight?” – I presumed correctly that he actually meant a half-guard lockdown.) because if you don’t know all the techniques used in every fight, you “don’t understand MMA.” Evidently King Mo should really be called “The Sphinx.”
The problem seems to be that Mo feels like he can’t just be himself – he has to put on a stupid tough guy act with the fans in order to promote his image. Sad – when he actually takes the time to talk about fighting, he’s an incredibly shrewd fight analyst. It’s a shame that he doesn’t feel like he can act that way all the time.

Great. Sweet. I understand now. I don’t know how I could have gotten that far off base. You are obviously confused. So I’ll give you a little history lesson, Muhammad Ali, Roy Jones, Brock Lesnar, Chael Sonnen, James Toney, T.O., Chad Johnson, Dennis Rodman, I could go on for days but lets stop with Floyd Mayweather…..
Do you know what these people have in common? They all talk a lot of sh*t, and in a direct correlation, made a sh*t ton more money once they did. Its not pro-wrestling jerk off, its plain jane open honest absolute and indisputable truth and reality. You talk crap, you get noticed, you become famous, you get paid…..what part of the last 50 years of sports history did you miss?
Listen MO, if you want to really FUCK THE FAN, don’t go on twitter. I’m a guy who like to be left alone, I don’t enjoy talking weather and answering any kind of pointless questions.
I got no twitter no facebook account, I don’t even go on MSN. If you don’t like the fans, don’t let the fans reach you, be like Brock Lesnar.

Some are cool, some are idiots. They’re fans-they don’t know what the f**k they are talking about. That’s why I’ll say it again: ‘f**k the fans.’ A lot of them ain’t educated.
Pretty much any professional thinks this about their clients. I envy Mo that he can get away with saying it in public.
Please note: he didn't say "fuck the ignorant fans."

10% of your clients cause 90% of your problems, but when you’re pissed off at a couple in particular, it’s easy for your emotions to get generalized to the rest.
It seems like Mo is one of those athletes who needs to feel like the underdog or feel like he has to prove “haters” wrong in order to get the best out of himself. When you’re like that, if nobody’s giving you motivation (he’s a heavy favorite in this fight), sometimes you’ve got to use your imagination to elevate something like a mild criticism of your game and in your mind turn it into a major insult.
Fans and media talk shit on fighters all the time. There’s nothing wrong with a fighter talking a little shit back. As long as he’s not making the bizarre claim loved by so many athletes that nobody can criticize something unless they do it themselves, I’m cool with it. Even if he’s saying “fuck you” to me personally.
Actually, he says that if you don't train, you can't understand.

there is no other 205 fighter out there that would be more compelling and be able to draw once he has the UFC machine behind him. him and rashad would be a nice match-up, a wrestling clinic possibly. that kind of banter is working for james toney, even got him signed.

He is reacting poorly to the overreaction to his last fight.
I think he took a little harder beating from the fans than he deserved for his match against mousasi. People still had sand in their panties from GSP not finishing hardy, then the decisions in Abu Dhabi, and the fact that his fight was part of CBS/Showtime’s 15 rounds of fun lead the anti-wrestling brigade to unload on him.
he is being too harsh, but there is a little truth to his attitude about that anti-wrestling brigade. They may be loud on the internet, but they don’t matter in the big picture. GSP and Brock are still big stars, and him and his act will win over even more casuals will jump on his bandwagon with a big win.
if he was in the ufc he'd be way more dangerous
if he was able to add elbows to his gnp he prob woulda finished mousasi, and he’d be labeled as less boring
We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!

I know he's your friend, but really?
Many fans are assholes, sure. But not understanding wrestling to his extent makes everyone else an asshole too?
Would you beat your chest and yell at someone if they use automatic settings in their dSLRs or couldn’t tell the difference between interlaced and progressive video?
That said, I’m still a fan of Mo’s. He speaks his mind at least. However, his vendetta against fans is quite comical. It’s like it eats at him day and night when he can just take the high-road and ignore the internet.
I like King Mo
I don’t care what anyone says. But I do think he’s being a little sensitive about this whole anti-wrestling criticism. They’re a small vocal minority. Guys like GSP and Brock have no problems selling PPVs. For the longest time Matt Hughes was a big shot. If people can connect with you, they’re gonna love you no matter what style you bring. Mo is sort of digging his own hole here, but if he doesn’t care, the fans won’t care about him. However, I think he really does care deep down inside, which is why he’s so hurt over this criticism. On the other hand, with a guy like Jon Fitch for example, when he says he’s just in it for the competition and doesn’t care about anything else, I believe him. His actions and behavior have been consistent with his comments, despite the criticism.
Fuck YOU Mo

by TheBiggertheyare... on Aug 19, 2010 1:21 PM EDT reply actions
So both DREAM and Sengoku are screwing fighters. DREAM isn’t paying fighters and Sengoku isn’t paying their hospital bills if they get hurt.
Seriously I am absolutely confused on why people are still supporting either of those companies.
They are screwing fighters over. What am I missing?
The other day in the article about DREAM not paying Bibiano Fernandes I asked about not doing anymore live event discussions for DREAM events because that is only supporting DREAM and their bullshit ways. My request was politely declined and I fully understand the position that was taken.
However I am still very very very confused about that. I mean KID NATE himself had this to say:
There’s no place in the sport for promoters who don’t live up to their contractual obligations to the fighters, regardless of how poorly their business venture fares. The promoters are the ones assuming the financial risk, the fighters are risking their lives and deserve to be paid.
That comes from here: http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2010/7/29/1594555/impact-fc-stiffs-fighters
So seriously what the hell am I missing? Why the hell is everyone giving these Japanese companies a pass?
KID NATE I thought your comment about IMPACT FC was right on point. Why does that not apply to these Japanese MMA promotions?
Just BE.
He lied
about the roots of his injury, he tore his ACL in training with Dean Lister. That’s what he says on a video on youtube. Glad Sengoku didn’t pay his surgery.
