WEC 50: Cruz vs. Benavidez - Live Results and Commentary

As with every major show, BloodyElbow.com will be here to bring you live results and commentary for WEC 50. The live blog will start with the beginning of the Versus broadcast (at 9PM ET) so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.
As always we have our one rule: NO SPOILERS! In the interest of not ruining anything from the undercard that may make the broadcast we ask that you do not discuss the results of the undercard in the comments until either the broadcast ends or the fight makes the air.
The Versus broadcast is live. First fight up shortly.
Bart Palaszewski vs. Zack Micklewright - Round 1 - Low kick by Bart and another. Micklewright is a southpaw. Bart keeps going with the inside leg kicks and Micklewright with some very nice combinations. Counter left from Bart. Zach landing hard as they exchange. As they're clinches against the cage they're restarted in the center of the cage and exchange low kicks. They're exchanging some big punches and now they trade accidental groin shots. Huge right from Bart lands and Zach just eats it. Both men landing hard again and finally Micklewright is backing up. The round ends and it was really good with both men having moments where they landed hard and they exchange right before the bell. Very close but I'd go 10-9 Bart. Round 2 - Bart with a nice two punch combination and Micklewright's legs wobble. Bart charges in and lands hard again and Zack's legs are not right. Big right hand and Micklewright goes down. The fight is stopped. Great showing for Palaszewski. Bart Palaszewski wins by TKO (Strikes), round 2.
Scott Jorgensen vs. Brad Pickett - Round 1 - Jorgensen throws a big shot that misses and Pickett is looking to counter and he briefly drops him with a right. Pickett landing some big punches and Jorgensen needs to rethink wild exchanges here. Pickett keeps catching kicks Jorgensen throws and countering him. Pickett misses with a big punch and pushes Jorgensen into the cage looking for a takedown but he can't get it. Right hand by Jorgensen. Jorgensen slowing down and landing some jabs and looking better. Single leg by Jorgensen and Pickett bounces back up. Body shot from Jorgensen and Pickett's mouthpiece comes out and as he's picking it up and putting it in Jorgensen hits him so Pickett laughs. Pickett lands a big punch and Jorgensen wobbles and decides to shoot in and gets a takedown. Pickett tries for a guillotine but Jorgensen moves to side control. Pickett stands up though and they're back to standing. Flying knee from Pickett lands. Nice left hand from Jorgensen and Pickett with a left hook. Big knee from Jorgensen and the round ends. GREAT round. This card is nuts already. VERY close but I'd go 10-9 Jorgensen. Round 2 - Pickett landing hard with several punches early and Jorgensen is looking to unload a right hand. Pickett is starting to use the jab but Jorgensen walks in and lands two hard punches. One-two combo from Pickett. Pickett looking really good this round and landing a big body punch. Now a big right from Jorgensen and now a huge right from Pickett. This is nuts. Right hand from Pickett. Jorgensen can't get the single leg so he lands a left hand. Now Pickett shoots and an accidental low blow from Pickett. They trade big shots with both men landing hard. Now Jorgensen is landing the better punches after the early part of the round being Pickett's. Pickett shoots and Jorgensen stuffs it and ends up on top in Pickett's guard. Jorgensen finally lands some elbows. I was ready to say Pickett was going to win the round but the work from the top here is probably going to win the round for Jorgensen. Pickett stands up as Jorgensen is looking for the mount and the round ends. 10-9 Jorgensen but could see it going either way. Round 3 - Nothing new this round ad they're both throwing but Jorgensen drops down and gets a takedown. Elbows from Jorgensen and Pickett is trying to find an escape. Pickett throws his legs up for a triangle and uses it to stand back up. Big right hand from Jorgensen and a left in return from Pickett. Jorgensen with another takedown and he's taking the easiest path to victory here. Elbows from the top again. Pickett looks for the triangle and Jorgensen passes to side control and he should be safe to win now. Knees to the body from Jorgensen. Pickett manages to reverse to the top position with ten seconds left and the fight is over. 10-9 Jorgensen gives him a 30-27 win on my card, but it was much closer than that number makes it sound. Scott Jorgensen wins by unanimous decision.
Chad Mendes vs. Cub Swanson - Round 1 - Swanson trying to move around on the outside and Mendes hurts him with a punch. Swanson gets sloppy and Mendes takes him down from behind and ends up in side control. Mendes throwin some shoulderbutts. Mendes is in side control but being threatened that he has to advance positions. Mendes just controlling him here. Big punch from Mendes and he goes right back on top. Josh Rosenthal stands them up which is embarrassingly bad refereeing. Side control is a dominant position, you don't stand up from there. Mendes gets another quick takedown but Swanson is able to stand back up. 10-9 Mendes. Round 2 - Mendes with a quick takedown and Swanson stands up quickly. Mendes is getting the better of the striking exchanges and now Cub is trying to throw big shots and mostly he's just missing with wild strikes. Nice uppercut from Cub. Counter right hand and now a takedown by Mendes. Mendes briefly passes to half guard and Swanson sucks him right back in. Mendes just smothering him from the top but not getting much done. Mendes tries to trap the arm but he can't finish the move. As Swanson manages to stand up he lands a couple knees and the round ends. 10-9 Mendes. Round 3 - Quickly they go right back to the ground with Mendes on top. Back to standing they go. Big double leg as Swanson is throwing punches. Mendes is really not impressing with his gameplan of "do nothing after takedown" but he's winning. Mendes steps over into a half guard after Swanson was looking for an omoplata or gogoplata. Mendez looking to pass to mount but Swanson right back into full guard. Swanson able to stand up and he throws a knee and gets slammed right back to the ground. Again Swanson gets up. Left hand from Cub. Uppercut from Cub. Leg kick now. Another takedown from Mendes and he's got this in the bag. The round ends and it seems like a pretty clear 30-27. Official scorecards: 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 all for Chad Mendes.
Anthony Pettis vs. Shane Roller - Round 1 - Roller with a left hook and he tries to get inside and gets a body lock. Pettis defends the takedown. Roller almost gets the takedown but Pettis uses good balance to pop back up. Roller keeps working for the takedown and Pettis keeps defending well. Pettis defends and lands a sharp right hand. Jumping kick from Pettis lands. Big right hand from Roller and he uses it to get inside. Takedown attempt by Roller, Pettis briefly ends up in mount and they scramble back to the feet. Two hard shots from Pettis and they clinch again. Right hand by Pettis as Roller tries to come in. Big right by Roller lands. Pettis with a huge kick and lands a flurry of punches to follow up. Roller has good position for a double leg and Pettis pulls him up to defend. Pettis with some sort of spinning fancy kick that I can't name and the round ends. 10-9 Pettis. Round 2 - Roller shoots in again and again Pettis pulls him up. Roller tries for a single but he can't get it again, Pettis' wrestling is shocking me. Big leg kicks from Pettis now. Pettis ends up on top as they briefly lock up. Roller looking for a body triangle. Hammerfists from Pettis and Roller looked like the really didn't like getting hit. Roller is trying to hold on for a stand-up but as he looks to lock up something Pettis stands up. Big left from Roller and Pettis is wobbled. Roller still can't get a takedown. Roller finally manages a takedown from a clinch and Roller ends up right in mount. Pettis uses the cage to flip and escape and end up on top in side control. This is so far and away the best I've ever seen Pettis. Hook kick attempt from Pettis and it just misses as the round ends. 10-9 Pettis again. Round 3 - Pettis with a leg kick. Roller with a shot and he gets the takedown in the middle of the cage. Side control for Roller. Pettis tries to roll and almost gets to his feet. Pettis almost locks in a triangle. Upkick lands for Pettis. Pettis comes very close to locking him in a triangle. Roller looking to lock in a guillotine and Pettis defends. Pettis manages to stand up and they're both exhausted. Big leg kick and a right hand from Pettis and Roller tries to play possum and Pettis takes him down. Wow. Roller locks in a guillotine but Pettis defends. In the scramble with 10 seconds left Pettis locks in a triangle and Roller is forced to tap. Anthony Pettis wins by submission (triangle choke), round 3. In a year Pettis is going to be really good. His wrestling used to be bad and it looked very good tonight.
Dominick Cruz vs. Joseph Benavidez - Round 1 - Cruz bouncing around and he looks huge net to Benavidez. Benavidez trying to throw hooks and having trouble finding his timing. Right hand from Benavidez lands hard. Cruz hits a right and Joseph slips. Cruz shoots and Benavidez defends. Uppercut from Cruz. Benavidez lands a counter. Big right hand from Benavidez. Quick takedown from Cruz. The round ends and it's hard to call but I guess 10-9 Cruz on the strength of the takedown. Round 2 - Benavidez lands a right hand and Cruz's nose is bleeding. Benavidez's head is cut. Knee to the body by Cruz. Jumping kick from Benavidez. Cruz throwing and not landing. Left hand from Benavidez and a right from Cruz. Benavidez can't get the single leg. This is a really ugly fight. Jumping knee by Cruz. Cruz shoots and Benavidez tries to grab a guillotine but can't get it. 10-9 Benavidez. Round 3 - Cruz shoots and can't get the takedown. Jab from Cruz. Both men throwing a lot, neither man really landing much. Low kick from Benavidez and he misses on a takedown and defends against an attempt from Cruz. Kick lands for Benavidez to the leg. Leg kick from Cruz. Left hand lands for Benavidez. Takedown from Cruz with 10 seconds left. 10-9 Benavidez I guess. These rounds are really weird to score. Round 4 - Quick takedown from Cruz and he moves to side control. Benavidez throwing his legs up for a triangle but can't lock it. Benavidez almost gives up the back but escapes and now he's trying to get on top. They're back to standing and clinched against the cage. Knee by Benavidez. Cruz is pouring blood now from the bridge of his nose. Cruz takes him down again. Blood is puddling under Cruz's face. That cut is very bad. Cruz moves to mount and Benavidez escapes and tries for the takedown again. The round ends and it was a 10-9 Cruz round on my card which makes the fight even heading into the final round. Round 5 - Cruz shoots and can't get it. Both men land punches. Benavidez's ear is swelling up badly. Benavidez keeps chasing him and throwing. Spinning backfist connects by Benavidez. Right hand for Cruz lands. Benavidez landing a few punches while Cruz swings and misses. Benavidez is throwing and back comes Cruz. Cruz with a takedown with 20 seconds left. Cruz trying to throw as the round ends. 10-9 Benavidez as I think his winning the rest of the round beats out a takedown at the very end of the round but I'm almost certain Cruz wins a decision anyway. Official Scorecards: 48-47 Benavidez, 48-47 Cruz, 49-46 Cruz. Dominick Cruz wins by split decision.

strikeforce has had fedor, hendo, and cbs to build on and still drawn horrible gates and ratings
the WEC only has urijah and vs, not the ideal combo for building brand power

I agree with that to a point, as long as it’s not too quick; just a lil quicker sometimes.
As for the guy on the bottom being “stuck” as his fault b/c he can’t get up or stop the TD; some rules in the sport already favor wrestlers (can’t knee or kick downed opponent being big ones) so I don’t think this rule would sway it too far past evening things up.

Pettis was wobbly as hell in the 2nd and he went for the takedown a la Sadollah/Blackburn instead of knocking him out.
Still, great fight and Pettis has shown remarkable wrestling improvement.

Cruz has a really frustrating style of fighting. He’s good at making fights into ugly affairs and coming out on the other side, even if both fighters end up looking bad in the process.

I think he'll be okay
He was never a huge FW and that’s one of the reasons I think he lost the second fight to MTB, two injured hands aside. But you never know, the first time moving down can be brutal for fighters, so yeah, we’ll wait and see.

Cruz is pretty good for never finishing a fight. Just seems like it is going to be hard for him to keep winning decisions when he never really decisively wins rounds. Everything with him is pretty close.

I didn't think this fight was that great
It was kinda sloppy, ugly in some points, and Cruz was very conservative at times and still had problems with his reach advantage. But it was definitely close.
Otherwise great card as always.

When Cruz landed, Benavidez didn’t so much as flinch, so in that regard it’s kind of misleading with Cruz’s striking.

and that this is an example of bad judging, is ridiculous. I’m fine with Cruz winning, but it was close, and it was ugly, and there wasn’t really much to distinguish them.

I think round 3 would have gone to Benevidez if Cruz hadn’t gotten that take down at the end of the round.
Judges like the take downs……I think they are worth points, but should really be worth MORE if the take down results in control. I don’t think the take down saved for the last 10 seconds should be worth as much.
Edgar won using the same style. Nothing suprises
me anymore. Every single person who watches MMA places a different value on scoring. A takedown might be more impressive to me than Cage control is to you. Its is so subjective.
The only constant (that I have seen) is Cecil. If he orders chicken with cheese he will score in favor of the loser, but if he gets mayo then he will score several rounds 10-7 for the fighter on the left.
It was a close fight
and everyone saw it differently. I thought Benavidez landed the harder shots. I think Cruz benefitted from constantly going forward and securing a few meaningless takedowns … the round 4 takedown was good and I gave Cruz that round but the ones with 20 – 30 seconds left didn’t steal rounds for him on my imaginary card.

I’m really annoyed that a takedown with 20-30 seconds left in a round will win it in a 5:00 minute mma round, even if said fighter was getting beat on the feet for the other 4:30. It’s not a jiu jitsu match. A takedown does not count for two points if you don’t do anything with it. Cruz lost the fight on the feet and won it on ineffective takedowns. Ridiculous.

You really do have a great point. Similar to Munoz vs Okami. Munoz somehow got a judge to give him the fight on takedown attempts alone. The few takedowns he got Okami got right back up and starting jabbing Munoz in the face.

i think in the case you should call WEC the most “entertaining” promotion. I think there’s a pretty big difference between the two.
But even then, i think the UFC has more “entertaining” fights overall. But that’s probably not even worth discussing as it’s a completely subjective topic and depends on what your idea of an entertaining fight is.
