Wow, nice built-in excuse there Mirko. I know that’s probably not what his intention was with the statement, but it certainly comes off that way.

II don’t know if it’s an excuse. Usually guys get a few months to prepare for someone and bring in BJJ guys to mimic other fighters. With 5 weeks’ notice I think you’d have a smaller supply of guys to train with.

Yeah, i was looking forward to this fight until Mirko basically told us why he’s going to lose.

Did he say he was going to lose? jeesh.

Contender?

So who does he get if he beats Mir? Maybe Carwin if this steroid stuff falls through?

by DCJon. on Aug 17, 2010 11:28 AM EDT reply actions

This "steroid stuff"

Will have no effect on Carwin’s ability to fight.

Carwin will be fighting Roy Nelson next.

It will absolutely effect him getting a fight. The UFC are trying to show they are serious about things and are a main stream sport however if these allegations show Carwin indeed did use steroids, then the fact he was never caught through testing will put a big cloud over the UFC and MMA as a whole so I don’t expect Carwin having a fight while this goes on.

athletic commissions

it won’t put a cloud over the ufc but the athletic commissions as these are the ones doing the testing.

Thank you

It’s a very important distinction which must be made.

I do

Despite the fact that the story has received some decent coverage here, by and large no one knows and by extension, no one cares.

And besides, how does it put a cloud over the UFC which doesn’t oversee the testing of athletes for PEDs?

It puts a cloud over the UFC because unless you are knowlegable regarding MMA you most likely associate MMA as a whole with UFC (such as people saying they fight/train UFC). Also if he is caught and the UFC continue using him as a fighter then the fact they are keeping a fighter and promoting him when he is a known cheater then it will look bad on them. Dana is all about keeping a good image and I feel he wants to distance himself and the UFC as much as possible from Carwin and these allegations.

by DCJon. on Aug 17, 2010 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

If he wants to distance himself from Carwin

Why is Carwin tweeting Dana thanking him for his support?

And just the same as most “casual” fans don’t know about ACs, they also don’t know about this particular case.

Regardless of a tweet I have not seen any public statements from Dana regarding the situation or their support of Carwin

by DCJon. on Aug 17, 2010 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Possibly because

the average fan doesn’t differentiate between what is the UFC’s responsibility and the Athletic commissions. They read the headline “UFC Fighter linked to Steroid Scandal” and assume the UFC is like the WWE, which runs it’s drug policy in-house. Thinking the average fan/person will seperate the UFC from the AC’s on this issue is giving far too much credit to them.

by hobbie on Aug 17, 2010 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Nelson’s out having surgery. He wants Nog in the new year. Carwin will fight before then, but it won’t be against Roy.

by Tim Burke on Aug 17, 2010 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Then who?

Cain if he loses to Lesnar? Kongo maybe if he beats Brown? The options are very limited as to who you can match Shane with.

It brings me back to Snowden’s article about Tim Sylvia yesterday. The UFC could sign him and match him up with Carwin. Would be a perfect fight for both guys.

Carwin is coming off a loss. The Brock/Cain loser works, but they might knock him down the card a bit. Possibly Kongo if he beats Travis Browne. Sylvia would work very well. Maybe CC if he beats Murrr. I don’t see many other options. I don’t think he’s gonna wanna sit for 8 months and wait for Nelson though, after sitting for so long waiting for Lesnar.

He did fight Mir in March although I appreciate he had a long layoff before that fight.

Yeah, I also don’t see Carwin waiting another 4-5 months before fighting again (when Roy has recovered and ready to fight). Maybe Struve?

by BeeTrain on Aug 17, 2010 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Possibly, although he’s already had his lights turned out a couple of times.

http://www.instrength.com

by Tim Burke on Aug 17, 2010 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't see it being Struve

Struve is a young fighter coming off a win. His losses have been to guys who can bomb him. The UFC wants to maximize what they have with a Struve, a young, raw, talented fighter. Booking him in a bounce back fight for Shane doesn’t make sense.

i see your point

but there’s absolutely nobody left that’s available that wouldn’t be a huge step down for Carwin. He’s not getting any younger – do you think he’d be willing to wait another 6 months to fight (if Roy)? that’d be 8 months between fights and one that doesn’t make me excited as a fan

by BeeTrain on Aug 17, 2010 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s not about it being a huge step down for Carwin, just that it’s too big a step up for Struve.

i think we can count on mir to say something stupid enough to light a fire under him.

But I know the UFC had no other solution and so I could not refuse the owner of the UFC, who has made me financially secure, or the UFC fans, who I do not want to disappoint.

With this kind of sentiment, I could see CC becoming the Rich Franklin of Heavyweight – the “company man” who can always be counted on to step up, fill a card, and fight whoever regardless of things like career progression or a possible title shot.

Which really, is a great place for him to be. Considering that a year ago he was an over the hill, washed up PRIDE castoff who was 1 fight away from retirement. The fight with Pat Berry really was a reawakening of sorts for his career. I can’t tell you how many people I know who were casual fans who became fans of his after that fight, beyond just “I saw his highlight video on YouTube/The Best of Pride FC”.

I would be the farm on Mir based upon that statement alone.

when i read that. not a confidence boost by CC by any means

I thought Cro Cop seemed a bit uninspired.

Even after the Barry fight, it seemed as though Cro Cop was winding down his MMA career. Not that he looked bad or out of shape— just seemed as if the zeal wasin’t there anymore.

Maybe he’s tired of fighting at this point.

God damn it i was looking forward to Mir knocking Nog’s block off again and see the excuses fly in that he had a dodgy ankle which affected his chin. Now he’s fighting a nice guy this sucks. Hopefully Mir will win whilst doing minimal damage to Cro Cop. maybe a sub will do it.

cro cop just talks like he isnt into the sport anymore

they way he said he took the fight bc his boss makes him financially stable, and of course the fans. and then talking about only 5 weeks to prepare. i mean its not just these statements but some from the past. like after the pat barry fight or jds fight. who knows maybe mir will talk enough shit to make the croatian sinsation bring war.

by prodigymma on Aug 17, 2010 12:51 PM EDT reply actions

It’s all an illusion, Mirko’s leading Mir into a false sense of security.

by RichHill on Aug 17, 2010 1:05 PM EDT reply actions

mirs just a bad match up for cro cop

i think this ends the way kongo mir did, franks proven he can beat the mid tier hws and mirko is certainly mid tier at this point in his career

a victory over an extremely one sided fighter who had a broken hand and foot does very little to make me think we’ll see the cro cop of old anytime soon

We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!

by milk72 on Aug 17, 2010 1:12 PM EDT reply actions

if frank mir wins

i want him to fight the winner of roy vs carwin. i dont think they should just throw mir in the HW title picture again with a win over cro cop

by prodigymma on Aug 17, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

they might have too

if brock runs through cain and JDS by early next year he’ll have run out of legitmate challengers for the title before going to rematches

i know thats a gigantic if and brock is far from beating cain and dos santos but it is a distinct possibility

We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!

Those are not the statements of a confident fighter.. I didn’t like it when it was first announced, and I’m liking it even less after reading this. Sounds like Cro-cop has already decided to lose. Hope I’m wrong..

“But I know the UFC had no other solution and so I could not refuse the owner of the UFC, who has made me financially secure, or the UFC fans, who I do not want to disappoint.”

See this right here is why Tim Sylvia should be keeping himself in shape to fight at 265 on short notice. If Mirko is right and they had no other solutions then Big Tim needs to be keeping himself in shape and ready to go so he can be an option or a solution to an injury like this for some promotion. Whether it is the UFC or another promotion.

Just BE.
