Bibiano Fernandes Says Dream Hasn't Paid, Turns Down September Fight
Brazilian website Tatame reported on Tuesday that Dream featherweight champion Bibiano Fernandes (8-2) is unhappy with the promotion and has rejected a proposed September bout at Dream 16 in Nagoya, Japan.
"The Flash" told Guilherme Cruz:
"Dream called me two days ago to offer me a fight on September 21, but I said I won’t fight until they pay me for my last fight [against Joachim Hansen on 3/22/10]... I have family, I have a wife and I can’t work without getting paid. I’ll only fight again when they pay me for my last fight."
This is, unfortunately, not a shocking development when it comes to Dream. Last August, Nick Diaz' trainer and manager Cesar Gracie wrote that the promotion had yet to pay Diaz for a May bout against Katsuya Inoue. Gary Goodridge is still awaiting compensation for his New Year's Eve match with Gegard Mousasi, and Tatame adds that Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza wasn't paid for months following his 2009 fight with Jason Miller.
It sounds like that Puji money can't come in fast enough for FEG.

This absolutely kills me. I want so badly for DREAM and Sengoku to succeed, but I think the writing has been on the wall for a while now. When organizations can’t pay employees; it’s just a matter of time before the go under. As a fan of Japanese MMA, I hope for the best, but I’m preparing for the worst.

even mid-level fighters who have a relatively smaller salary
get paid 3-6 months late. It’s kinda sad actually.
Sad? Inexcusable. This isn’t happening because they can’t afford it.

possilby not accurate
in that they may have not been getting paid either, but it is interesting to note that no Japanese fighters are on the list complaining about not getting paid. Could be for a number of reasons, just sayin

They pay the Japanese fighters. They don’t want them showing up at their offices demanding payment or running to the Japanese tabloids to tell stories of not getting paid and the graft and corruption behind the scenes (which is especially important in light of the ongoing sumo scandal).
They don’t give a shit if some dudes half a world away are pissed off and giving interviews in Portuguese/English that will never be covered by the insular Japanese press.
pretty much what i was saying
but mine was much more circumspectly and uh…. politely :P
certainly worth it to call a spade a spade tho

Would’ve bounced pretty fuckin high.
Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.
I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.
That’s fantastically shitty. Does Sengoku pay their fighters or are they also kinda shifty with money?
They have money behind them and probably pay fighters. The problem is that they pay guys garbage money to fight. You don’t go to Sengoku because you have big money options in the US.

it's a damn shame
i hate that the business side of mma has become so corrupted so many fighters getting bent over with no lube or a reach around.
i suppose even ufc and strikeforces slave wages for most of their fighters are better than the options abroad

I hate to say this, I am a huge Japanese MMA fa, Prinde got me my start in MMA back in 2001, but there should be a flat out boycott of Dream and Sengoku. This is an absolute disgrace. I know there are less and less places to fight and make a dollar, but anyone who signs a contract with them at this point is just asking to work for free.

There are also reports of various K-1 fighters not getting paid (K-1 and DREAM are both part of the same parent company, FEG), including their current 70kg champion Giorgio Petrosyan, who, as of May, had not been paid for winning the title. He’s not alone in that on the K-1 side either. It’s a real shame.

I would never take a contract job without the money being put in my account before I did one second of work. Blame fighters’ managers as much as you blame the sleazy Japanese promoters.
nah i think I'll just blame the promoters this time.
"In this fight, Anderson showed he was human," Nogueira said. "He showed he could be weak. But he showed he is a fighter and he brings something from his heart. It was beautiful."

so dream's not paying fighters?
I anxiously await kid nate’s next article on how this proves Dana and the UFC are terrible for the sport, and will definitely go bankrupt at any moment.
Jacare
The Tatame article says that when he spoke to them 4 months after the Miller fight he had not been paid yet, but this article makes it sound like they say he still hasn’t gotten paid. I think that’s a little misleading, Chris.
Yeah, you know me, always trying to mislead and paint the Japanese promotions in a negative light…
No seriously, the wording in Tatame’s article was just a little weird, so I was confused. Fixed.
by Chris Nelson on Aug 17, 2010 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions
This may sound like a stupid question but does not getting paid immediately void any contract he has with them? I mean it’s been a reasonable amount of time and he still hasn’t gotten paid. That has to be breach of contract right?
So if I’m his manager I’m calling the WEC and saying make me a great offer and you can get the DREAM featherweight champ in to the WEC.
Also it feels like DREAM is getting off easy from the fans and MMA blogs on this. When a fighter gets stiffed by a different promotion or some sponsor everybody goes crazy and calls for boycotts. MMA blogs will write stories about it and call them out. With DREAM it keeps happening but everybody keeps posting stories and having live discussions on their events and supporting watching them. Basically still promoting DREAM and encouraging people to watch their product. I just don’t get it. I’m not going to support DREAM if they keep stiffing fighters over and over. It keeps happening and now it’s a champion. There is no more excuses for DREAM. Can we quit giving them a pass?
Please no more live discussions during DREAM events. That is only encouraging supporting a product that is screwing over fighters.
Just BE.
Sadly, if we were to boycot every shady fight promoter, there would be virtually no MMA to cover.
by Chris Nelson on Aug 17, 2010 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions
But what was covered would be worthy of it!

That confuses me.
So basically your saying that is how things work and we should just go ahead and continue to support DREAM even though they are repeatedly screwing fighters over?
To me taking that stance is only telling the shady fight promoters that it’s ok to be shady we will still cover your events and give you publicity. That route is only assuring them they can get away with it and there is no reason to change.
Just BE.
One more thing.
I realize it may hurt a few other fighters in the short term but at some point you have to take on the shady promotions. Why can’t we start with the promotions that are showing a pattern of not paying fighters like DREAM?
So I’ll ask one more time. Please no more coverage of DREAM or live discussion of DREAM events. They shouldn’t be rewarded with good coverage while not paying fighters.
Just BE.
I really do get where you’re coming from, but I don’t think it’s realistic to say that we should (or even could) completely stop covering one of the biggest fight organizations in the world. If you wrote to any other MMA blog out there, I think they’d tell you the same. I think we strike a fair balance by covering the shows, but also posting about situations like this when they happen.
by Chris Nelson on Aug 17, 2010 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Do they deserved be recognized as one of the biggest fight organizations in the world if they are regularly screwing fighters out of paydays? Because to me that shows they are not a successful big time organization worthy of such coverage.
Anybody else got any ideas on how to help this situation get better or should we just keeping letting DREAM screw over fighters?
Just BE.
This is what I don’t get about this. This is a link to Spencer Fisher’s post on the UG about not getting paid by Toe 2 Toe.
http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma.cfm?go=forum_framed.posts&forum=1&thread=1661965&page=1&pc=188
Everyone please browse through the pages of that post and explain to me why the reaction to DREAM screwing fighters out of money is so different from Spencer Fisher being screwed out of money from a sponsor? Maybe I’m just a freaking idiot but I just can’t wrap my mind around why DREAM is basically getting a pass on this compared to how Toe 2 Toe got killed for not paying Spencer Fisher.
Just BE.
Sounds like FEG is really in dire straits

anonymous reports that japanese guys are not getting paid either, sounds like FEG really is coasting on that one contract a year for NYE/Dynamite!
