UFC's Shane Carwin Tied to Steroid Case
J. Michael Bennett, who was supervising pharmacist at Applied Pharmacy Services, was the first to be sentenced from a group of 5 men found guilty after a five-week trial earlier this year. His punishment was less than half of the 7 years and 4 months sought by prosecutors.
They contended that Bennett played a key role in an enterprise involving rogue doctors and health clinics across the country who used the compounding pharmacy to supply healthy adults with dangerous steroids.
According to court records, Applied Pharmacy Services shipped 762,388 dosages to 17 doctors and clinics from April 4, 2004, until Aug. 30, 2006. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Mobile contends that does not include many other doctors and clinics that they say participated in the conspiracy.
In court today, Dobbins named seven whose orders included Bennett's signature or initials:
Shane Carwin, a former NCAA Division II wrestling champion who went on to become an Ultimate Fighting heavyweight champion.
Kurt Angle, a former Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler and professional wrestler.
Bob Howard, a pro wrestler from Mobile who performed under the name "Hardcore" Bob Holly.
Tony Freeman, a professional bodybuilder nicknamed "The X-Man."
Quincy Taylor, a professional bodybuilder.
Dennis Newman, a professional bodybuilder.
Troy Zuccolotto, a professional bodybuilder.
Court documents reference 6 other professional bodybuilders, 7 professional wrestlers and 2 professional baseball players by their initials only.

Carwin will deny it and nothing will come of it. Same with almost every other athlete who has been involved in these things.
Hard to deny a receipt in your name addressed to your address
Barry was able to deny it because they didn’t have his name. I can’t think of any other athletes caught up in a steroid ring that “just denied it” and it went away. Only pro wrestlers and no one cares about them.

To be fair,
“some” of the scrip was for animal juice. It is a pharmacy as opposed to a locker-room; I’d imagine they’d have access to the top-shelf stuff also.
Nonetheless, I’m disappointed that Carwin was dumb enough to have his own name on paperwork, which makes me think he was signed on before he started fighting in earnest.

Surprised at no coverage yet. Came out yesterday.
Someone said Lesnars name was attached to this case at 1 point. I’m 99% sure that isn’t true, I don’t remember that. This came out in court yesterday I’m surprised I haven’t seen any of the big MMA sites pick it up yet.
I'm curious about the Brock connection, too
I only ever remember Lesnar’s name coming up in a steroid scandal when he got arrested in 2001 for receiving a package that turned out to be legal growth hormone.

People are naive if they think most athletes haven’t used steroids at one point or another, whether it’s for sports or simply bodybuilding.
Also, there’s no date referenced of when the listed names actually were written prescriptions. Carwin very well could have been taking them before he started fighting and was focused more on weights and his look. He has not tested positive while fighting which is important.
But I know considering Carwin’s good guy clean cut image, this doesn’t bode well for him, especially on BE where the hate on him is ridiculous

O I agree the piss test is a joke in general, but you’re going down a slippery slope with that. Perhaps as long as it was medically justified (by having low levels, was a legit rx AND one’s levels did not exceed the max allowed (probably 2x – 4x natural for testosterone)…

It started about a year ago when Mr. Carwin decided to label himself the "White Knight" of MMA fighters
Sent down from Valhalla to show MMA fans that not all fighters are “like Brock Lesnar”. I abhor people who try to elevate themselves and buttress themselves with morality and “good” like preachers, politicians and some athletes.
Then he began to do the exact OPPOSITE of what he claimed. He began to talk shit about Lesnar, got himself a title fight out of it. Kept on talking. Makes him a hypocrite. Then Brock gets sick and he wishes him well. Then Carwin starts talking about Brock’s “miracle recovery” in quotes as if he doubts it. He continued to talk more shit about Lesnar again being a hypocrite. That’s when I asked what I asked at the UG.

Not surprising
Shane was into the body building scene for a while, and when I saw him fight he was over 300 lbs at SHW and He was much more muscular and ripped than he is now. He used to train with Ron Waterman and I seriously doubt that guy is all natural.
I doubt if Shane is juiced now, considering the massive loss of weight, size and muscularity, but still…
And I agree with Noah’s Ark, why are any of us surprised in the least when this news comes out?

That is ridiculous. No steroids don’t always equate to size and I never said it did. you guys need to re-read my statement. What I’m saying is, that due to his extreme loss of size/muscle, it is MY BELIEF that he may not be currently using. OR he may be? To say that that a loss in size and muscularity can not be attributed to being off the juice is absolutely not true. In may cases it may be exactly the truth.
Well,
yes and no. In Sharwin’s case, like BJJ D said, he was well over 300 lbs of solid muscle, and now he’s like 280ish. When you lose 20 lbs of solid muscle, it’s indicative of some kind of drastic change. Considering that he’s pissed clean for the last few years, and that he’s being implicated in the 2006 time frame, it’s fairly obvious to me that he used AAS’s to put on a bunch of muscle in the past, and now that he’s being tested, he’s not on it any more.
Of course he’s a genetic monster, works his ass off, and eats right, but you just can’t be a conditioned athlete and put on that much muscle without help.

Shane weighing either 252 or 255 (I don’t recall which0 for the Wellisch fight in early/mid 2008? There is no possible reason to do a normal extreme dehydrate/rehydrate (aka weight cut) to end up 10 – 13 pounds under the limit…
Perhaps he was on them circa 2006, got off for a time, then got on some variety of anabolic substance since then? For a person already strength training, it is possible to add 1/4 – 1/3 pound of lean muscle mass per week without adding a banned substance, so…

If you start lifting heavy and eating like 10k calories a day, you would be surprised what you look like in a 2 or 3 years. Bonds may have done steroids, but I have seen photos of similar changes from legit methods.

not his post-age 32 performance statistics arc, which are unprecedented in MLB history. It’s circumstantial, but it’s there. Compare them to the greatest of the great, the Willie Mays, the Ty Cobbs, the Ted Williams. Either he’s a genetic Superman, or…

But only Bonds
had the anomaly? I’m not talking “good” seasons, I’m talking off-the-hook, unmatchable stats that are off the curve from age 36 to 40, that belie “good genes”. Everybody in MLB benefited from those variances, but Bonds had insane post-physical peak years.
Alex had stunning years in that time too. Oh yeah, he was also in the report. But at least he was in the physical prime of his career. Watch how his stats go from middle-thirties to 40. Just like Jeter, Griffey, Mays, et al. After age 35, batters decline statistically, NOBODY gets better for the next four years..
Bonds used a butt load of 'Roids...
case closed.
Plus he’s a dickhead…

Seriously
What will happen when Dana and the gang start getting subpoenaed to appear before congress? It’s great that we all joke and bust these guys chops, but look what the effect on MLB has been.
Steroids effect on baseball is far from all negative. Baseball was pretty much dying before Sosa, Mcquire and Bonds started breaking homerun records. Now that steroids is in the spotlight it may have turned some fans away. But I bet steroids benefitted baseball more than it ended up hurting it.
by Dropkick434 on Aug 14, 2010 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Never happen
Unlike other pro sports where the leagues are responsible for drug testing, in MMA that responsibility, in the U.S. anyway, falls solely on the ACs.

less likely than baseball.
Baseball freaks about congress because they don’t want the government involved. If they called Dana, he’ll just say, “we do what the government says, if they want to do more, go ahead.”
I can’t tell what Dana really thinks about steroids, and how things would change if there was more stringent testing, but he has the built in excuse.
The effect on MLB? You mean the unprecedented growth of the game this last decade?

I think it would have been very interesting to see how guys like Brock, Goldberg, and few others bodies changed after Eddie Guererro’s death had they stayed in WWE.
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" - Philippians 4:13
For Lesnar, he was huge as hell in 2000 when he signed
People like to compare pictures but Brock in the WWE was building show muscles and not functional muscles. He was also getting rid of all the fat in his body to look more cut. And he stayed tanned to show off his definition. If Brock tanned now, he’d look even more ripped.

This
People don’t realize that the way these guys build their bodies as mixed martial artists is completely different from the way they lift and their diet when they’re defining muscles for show. I think it’s silly to say “well, he was taking a bunch of steroids back then— look at him”.

I think he was probably taking steroids
because most of these freaking guys get caught taking steriods. Even the littlest of guys get popped in the pro-wrestling business. Considering the constant stress being put on their bodies due to their never ending schedules, taking “bumps” day in and day out wearing down their bodies even more, and not really having adequate time throughout the week to work out it only makes sense for most of these guys to be doing it. Really at least as far as professional wrestlers go I wouldn’t blame them for it, it’s not like they’re gaining an unfair advantage in a predetermined match.

Olympic Drug testing
I really wish they would incorporate in into MMA. It would clear up many of the questions and issues
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" - Philippians 4:13
In order for that to happen you’d have to get people to admit that the current system is flawed and thus should be corrected, and getting people in these Commissions to publicly admit mistake is highly unlikely.

Although I feel they are all talented, my most disliked fighters are: Kos, Barnett, Bisping, Shields… I am sure there are more, that’s just off the top of my head.
Fighting is actually the best thing a man can have in his soul.
Wand was a bit of a dick in PRIDE
He was a bully (the Rampage shoving, being a part of jumping KrazyHorse, roid raging against Coleman). His fans annoyed the fuck out of me. This was before him coming to the UFC. Then I started to like the guy more. The old feelings almost came back when he shoved Rampage at the weighins, but quickly went away.

Carwin dun goofed up! (allegedly)
Now, I like Shane as much as the next guy (which is to say, not at all) but this is gonna be good for the big softy. He’s too sensitive and fragile right now. I hope, in all this (what he is about to go through with MMA fans), that he can develop some thicker skin and really embrace his true fan-loathing self. If he can’t take the heat and just up and quits… I would be ok with that too. There are about 30 seconds combined of his life that have been of interest to me…. his knockouts and getting subbed by Brock. Hmm, I feel like I am missing something…. oh… and…. (insert hilarious lactic acidosis joke here).
