Strikeforce Challengers 10 - Live Results and Commentary
As with every major show, BloodyElbow.com will be here to bring you live results and commentary for Strikeforce Challengers 10. The live blog will start with the beginning of the Showtime broadcast (at 11PM ET) so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.
As always we have our one rule: NO SPOILERS! In the interest of not ruining anything from the undercard that may make the broadcast we ask that you do not discuss the results of the undercard in the comments until either the broadcast ends or the fight makes the air.
The Showtime broadcast is live, first fight up shortly.
Miesha Tate vs. Maiju Kujala - Round 1 - Tate with a jab and clinches up with Kujala. They're really struggling working the clinch. Kujala doing a nice job defending so far in the clinch. Tate finally gets the takedown and Kujala is defending well and she's trying to control the head. The ref with a very odd stand-up as Tate is working for a sub and the round ends. 3 minute rounds are horrible. Round 2 - Tate lands a flurry going backward and they clinch up and Kujala is starting to land later in the round and Tate misses a takedown. They're really going at each other in the clinch and this only being a 6 minute fight is really horrible. Tate with a takedown and that should get her the win. The round, and fight ends and I guess I'd say Tate should win here but the odd 2 round system makes it really hard to know what is going on. Miesha Tate wins by unanimous decision.
Carina Damm vs. Hitomi Akano - Round 1 - In an exchange Damm gets Akano's back and is working for a choke but ends up in Akano's guard. Akano opening her guard looking to catch an arm and Damm lands a few punches. Damm not working much and the fight is stood up. Spinning backfist from Damm and Akano with the takedown and she has half guard. Akano looking for a footlock and they blow a whistle to signal 10 seconds so the girls stop fighting. This is really awful and I refuse to score 3 minute rounds with bad standups and whistles that cause the rounds to end early. Round 2 - Damm with a leg kick and another spinning backfist. Akano with a takedown from the inside. Akano looks for an omoplata and Damm avoids and lands a hammerfist. Akano with a great transition into an armbar and Damm is forced to tap out. Wow, great submission. Hitomi Akano wins by submission (armbar), round 2.
Ryan Couture vs. Lucas Stark - Round 1 - Right hand lands for Stark and Couture clinches up and takes him down. As they stand back up Stark with a really nice takedown and Couture locks up a very quick and tight triangle and it's over. Ryan Couture wins by submission (triangle choke), round 1.
Hitomi Akano vs. Miesha Tate - Round 1 - They're standing up through the first minute with not much action until Akano lands to the body. Tate with a takedown and she almost has Akano's back but Akano scrambles and gets pinned against the cage. Akano locks in a very deep footlock and Tate breaks the grip. Tate landing some punches from the top now and the round ends. 10-9 Akano easy. Round 2 - Right hand lands hard for Take and she gets a takedown. She takes and maintains it for the majority of the round, finally working for a choke in the last 20 seconds of the round. Akano turns into her and lands a flurry of hammerfists as the round ends. 10-9 Tate. Round 3 - Body kick by Tate, Akano tries for a throw but Tate takes her back. Tate is really working to sink in the rear naked choke. Tate flurries as the round ends and there's no way she lost this fight. 29-28 Tate. Official Scorecards: Miesha Tate wins by unanimous decision.
Joe Riggs vs. Louis Taylor - Round 1 - Taylor with a hook and kicks to the leg and body. Riggs briefly had a single and Taylor pops up and pushes Riggs into the cage looking for the takedown. Taylor with a nice takedown and he's on top in Riggs' closed guard. Taylor stands back up as he couldn't get off with his strikes and they're back to striking. Riggs comes up short with a superman punch. Riggs lands a right hand counter that lands. Taylor working a lot of leg kicks. Right hand from Taylor clips Riggs on the ear. Right hand from Riggs. Spinning back elbow from Taylor misses. They clinch up again and Taylor pushes him into the cage. Knee to the body by Taylor and the round ends. 10-9 Taylor. Round 2 - Leg kick by Riggs. Superman punch from Riggs lands. Taylor lands to the body and Riggs misses a counter. Taylor with a bad attempt at a double and Riggs avoids. Left hand lands for Riggs. Taylor with a nice combination but mostly hits air. Taylor lands as they separate from the clinch. Taylor with a takedown into half guard and that is a big moment in the fight ad he could win this round now and go up 20-18. Taylor controlling from the top and landing some short punches. Taylor flurries as the round ends and should have won the round 10-9. Round 3 - Taylor with a leg kick. Side kick to the body from Taylor. Left hand from Riggs rocks Taylor badly. Riggs takes him down and is looking to land some punches. Crucifix by Riggs and he is landing punches and Taylor taps out. Good comeback for Riggs that he never should have had to make. Joe Riggs wins by submission (strikes), round 3.

Sometimes straight Canadians are so polite that Americans mistake them for gay.
Like Nick Ring?

Not all of it is good, but the subject matter is often a little more conscious. It generally has a very different sound though.

One time, me and my cousin were free styling in his car with his new girl(who asked me earlier that day if he was gay). He starts rapping, he’s not too good, she looks at me like “Oh shit, he sucks. This is awkward.”
This fool is rhyming and says “I felt really…” after a 2 second pause he says “gay”
She looks at me like “Really? After a two second pause he still couldn’t up with something other than gay? Hmmmmmm.”
Then he goes “by gay I meant happy”

most people around the world tend to get fired up when called or confused for their next door neighbors, be it in Asia or Latin America.

They wanted to use the 10 point must...
and do 3, 3 minute rounds but the AC stepped in and said they wouldn’t allow someone to possibly fight 6 rounds in one night. So they had to cut the first round back to 2, 3 minute rounds where a winner must be named. This one isn’t on Strikeforce as much as…well…most things

This whole “challengers” moniker is terrible. I just know Taylor well enough from being in the area for a while to know that when he’s on he is a pain in the ass. He’s not that GOOD so much as he’s one of those guys who has some specific skills that can let him win fights over guys who tend to shit the bed like Riggs.

pretty sure the SF Houston is next week as well
Kennedy vs Jacare and Lawal vs Feijao. That’ll be a very solid card on paper. WEC is entertaining like SF is more often than not but I never really get that gold standard world class feeling like with the UFC. I dunno why but WEC is right there with Bellatore & Sengoku as the sort of best of the meh mma promotions. I like some of their fighters but most of their events don’t really do it for me.
by Johnnynumber5 on Aug 14, 2010 1:02 AM EDT up reply actions
What a terrible, cheesy and just downright terrible production job for SF. Production will probably never be their forte but this was just one of the worst they’ve ever done … thats saying something. I like the product in the cage most nights but just about everything else from a production standpoint is so substandard compared to the UFC.
Strikeforce events make a case...
for the way the UFC controls all aspects of their production.
I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.

Random thoughts
I am looking forward to the Tate/Kaufman rematch.
The women’s finals had some damn fine grappling. Very enjoyable.
Even when she dresses all lady-like, Cyborg looks like she could kill 90% of the male population.
Could they have talked about Ryan for even 60 seconds without mentioning his dad?
Joe is starting one last run at a title…except he does not seem to know at which weight class.
I could almost hear Nick Diaz cursing up a storm at home.
Anyone else think the announcer was hella bad?
You don’t have to explain the rules BEFORE EVERY DAMN BOUT!
Sorry, that last one was really getting on my nerves.
Could they have talked about Ryan for even 60 seconds without mentioning his dad?
No, because that’s the only reason anyone has an interest in him. Without his family pedigree, he’s just one of thousands of lightweights trying to make it as a pro.

I am looking forward to Tate / Kaufman as well, provided it has proper rounds
Stop saying “weighth”, stop saying “superwoman punch”, stop just stop.
All of the women were great. The refs, commentary and rules suck balls
You do have to explain the rules BEFORE EVERY DAMN BOUT! When they change for every fight
Terrible commentary, terrible announcing, I hate those guys
Oh, and the commentary was terrible
stop saying "superwoman punch"
This is especially bad because of the literary stupidity of it. The move is named for Superman, the character, not the vague concept of a Super Man, and there fore the possible existence of a gender equal Super Woman.
Perhaps they should just be calling it the “Power Girl Punch” when women fight. Given her appeal amongst the comic book crowd, it might actually increase the popularity of women’s MMA.
I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.
All I knew about Akano going into last night was how badly Cyborg smashed her.
She’s a damn good grappler when fighting in her weight class though, holy shit. Not Megu level, but good nonetheless. And props to Miesha for beating her. That fight was great.
by Polyhedron on Aug 14, 2010 11:54 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
Watched the card earlier today. Some points:
3 minute rounds WERE FUCKING RETARDED! Also under that same category: referees standing shit up at completely inappropriate moments, 10 second left whistle, announcer douchebags, production, giving a belt for this watered down half-assed lame “tournament”, 182 catch-weight headline, putting 0-0 debuting pro-fighters on the name card just because they have a famous dad
So, pretty much everything. Some positives though: some nice grappling between the ladies (before they got stood up by idiot referee / round ending way too quickly), and Miesha Tate’s ass.
yeah those refs are fucking retarded
just another reason to hate Arizona.
