Bellator 24 - Live Results and Commentary
As with every major show, BloodyElbow.com will be here to bring you live results and commentary for Bellator 24. The live blog will start with the beginning of the Fox Sports broadcast (at 8PM ET) so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.
As always we have our one rule: NO SPOILERS! In the interest of not ruining anything from the undercard that may make the broadcast we ask that you do not discuss the results of the undercard in the comments until either the broadcast ends or the fight makes the air.
The FSN broadcast is on the air. First fight up shortly.
Neil Grove vs. Eddie Sanchez - Round 1 - Grove hurts Sanchez right away and follows him to the ground where he's laying big punches on him. Grove stands back up and lands a kick to the body when Eddie stands up. Again he hits him and puts him on the ground, pounds him and as soon as Eddie looks for an armbar Grove stands up. Leg kick from Grove. Sanchez with a bad mouse and he's badly hurt. He's throwing haymakers but Grove is destroying him. Sanchez is badly beat up and has trouble standing up and grabbed his head so the ref stopped it. He is messed up, this is a really good stoppage. Neil Grove wins by TKO, round 1. That's as impressive as I've seen Grove look in a long time.
Megumi Fujii vs. Carla Esparza - Round 1 - Fujii with some nice punches and these two are throwing hands early. Fujii using nice in-out movement to hit and get away before a return shot comes. Esparza defends the first couple takedown attempts by Fujii. Esparza finds a little success walking in with combinations and now Fujii pulls guard but Esparza stands up. Esparza defends a judo throw and lands a punch as Fujii moves away. Fujii drops down and is looking for a heel hook. Fujii switches to a toe hold but Esparza avoids it so Fujii transitions to get on top in Esparza's guard. Esparza shoots and Fujii rolls and looks for a choke as the round ends. 10-9 Fujii. Good round. Round 2 - Esparza lands a right hand and they end up in a clinch and Fujii is looking for a leg again. Esparza survives the leg lock attempt but Fujii slides right onto an arm and Esparza has to tap. Megumi Fujii wins by submission (armbar), round 2.
Herbert "Whisper" Goodman vs. Hector Lombard - Round 1 - Lombard charges into Goodman headhunting with wild winging punches. He quickly backs him up into the cage and drops him with a right hand. He follows him down and ref Jorge Alonso stops the beating in short order. Hector Lombard by KO, round 1.
UPDATE by Kid Nate: We had some tech issues, sorry for the delay
Yves Edwards vs. Luis Palomino - We pick up the action in the third round. Edwards easily won the first, and arguably took the second. Round 3 - Both men stalking on the feet. "Baboon" chants from the crowd for Palomino, who has a head kick blocked by Edwards. Leg kick from Palomino now, and Edwards counters with a left hand and a kick of his own. Palomino rushes forward with a combination, but nothing lands. Another head kick blocked by Edwards. Yves ducks a right hook from Palomino and floors him with a double-leg with less than 60 seconds on the clock. Edwards passes to half-guard and closes out the bout there. Should be a unanimous decision for Edwards, who certainly won the first and third rounds. Yves Edwards def. Luis Palomino via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

It doesn't air til Friday here.
Usually at 9:00 so it will be on at pretty close to the same time as the Strikeforce card.
Thank goodness for PVR
You wait for it on TV? I can’t do that. My friend Justin manages to get it live every week, so I head over to his place.

Ugh. Charter isn't going to have this until tomorrow.
I absolutely can’t watch MMA on tape delay. I don’t do it. I just look up the results and don’t watch. MMA is my second favorite sport, but so much of it for me is the excitement, not knowing what’s going on. It’s all in my head, but I can’t watch any tape delay.
Le sigh.

Yves vs Palomino won’t be on the TV card, because that’s a decent matchup but at least Bellator releases their prelims to view on the website afterward, so really can’t complain.
Yeah, that’s a great fight. Hopefully it finds its way onto the broadcast.

yeah it’s interesting. seems like they’re able to deliver interesting fights for some of their champs.

There's not many
and many really, really good women wrestlers out of HS go to Olympic training program and don’t actually wrestling for a college. Some now have the chance to wrestle in college.
60 colleges offer women’s wrestling. More than 3,000 girls wrestled in HS last year in the US.

Starting to see a slight wave building
Not sure why, but more girls are giving it a try. I volunteered at some youth tournaments this summer, and even 7-year-old girls were present. Not many (like 2, I think), but never saw girls that young before.
And an athletic HS girl can hang with the boys at 103 and 112, even at the higher levels of competition. But 199 and above, the muscle difference is just too much to overcome.

3,000 girls and 260,000 boys
sounds like a party to me, a really disgusting part I wouldn’t want to clean up after.

Actually, the high school number is over 5000. According to the New York Times: “Five thousand girls nationwide wrestled in high school in the 2006-7 academic year, yet only eight colleges offer it as a varsity sport.”
That quote is from this NYT May 27, 2008 article. The numbers would be even higher now.
He's got balls though!

There are some great fighters in the HW division, I’m not denying that. It’s just that the level of competition is generally pretty low, as in the top fighters are so far above the next level that fights are often not very competitive.

Ahhhh!
Pat Curran didn’t deserve the decision against Imada. They should’ve let him fight Alvarez for the title.

I can only imagine that it’s because (a) Imada faced him in the prior year; and (b) Huerta is more viable, from a promotional stand-point.
This.
It’s not a title fight now so Bellator should absolutely put on the most promotable fight they can. They’re trying to make money.

yeah. and you try to grab his wrist and bring it toward his ear, at the same time, using your bottom leg to trap it, then triangle that shit and hump the air for the kimura. if he straightens his arm, straighten it all the way for him, armbar.

Tho with the humping the air for a kimura, im not sure i want to see the pictures.
in any event, you got me as to why no one does it. You have plenty of guys with judo backgrounds. I was trying to figure out if there is a reason why it wouldn’t work.

According to Jordan Breen, he’s got one more fight in six-fight contract, with an automatically extending championship clause. Not really sure when we’ll see him in the big boy promotion.
what does the champion clase mean?
Because maybe he takes so many fights so he can leave…
it means
he can’t leave until he loses the belt. its fucking bullshit.

Eh...
even the UFC’s clauses have been clarified to say that they don’t extend forever. I’d be shocked if the terms extend more than 1 year

Doesnt Bellator have very strict contract terms?
I remember reading that most of the prospects they signed up are set for a long time, so they cant go in, get better, then move up to the UFC
That could be...
and would explain the UFC being aggressive toward them.

I don't think it was a surprise Lombard KO'd another unknown scrub
His only losses are from two top notch fighters and wins are from a bunch of nobodies. Given he has a monster physique for a MW and crazy striking, he needs to ditch bellator and either sign with SF or UFC.
