Rafael dos Anjos Undergoes Surgery Following UFC 117 Bout With Clay Guida
Clay Guida and Rafael dos Anjos' lightweight contest at UFC 117 came to an anticlimactic end when Dos Anjos tapped out due to injury in the third round. As it turned out, the Brazilian had fought for about ten minutes with his jaw cracked in two places, and was finally forced to submit when Guida rammed a shoulder into his face from half-guard.
With Dos Anjos himself presumably not doing much talking at the moment, Tatame Magazine's Guilherme Cruz spoke to his wife, Cristiane, and got this update:
"He broke his jaw in two places in the first minute of the first round... We're still in the United States, he's being operated on here. If everything goes well, I think we'll go back to Brazil on Saturday."
After the jump, a gif of the Guida combination which did the damage.

Well....Clay Guida is not exactly the hardest puncher in the world.
Nick Garcia is the Brian Russell of MLS but 10 times worse.
was thinking that too
but he got clipped as he was coming in & Clay had some torque on that cross.

Because rather than transferring the force to his brain (as punches to the jaw do typically)
the force was expended breaking his jaw. His jaw effectively acted as a crumple-zone.
If you remember that horrific collision between Carlos Beltran and Mike Cameron (NY Mets outfielders) a few years ago, they collided head-on-head in mid-air, so each one’s head necessarily absorbed exactly the same amount of force. Beltran suffered a grade III concussion. But Cameron got away with a grade II concussion because his face broke in 5 places.

This dude...
is a f@#%in’ fighter.
Lot of guts to stick it out like that. Hope he gets taken care of by Dana and then back into action.
I wonder which punch actually caused the break. The right cross was obviously more powerful and hit right on the button but that first punch lands at such a weird angle. Looks like it awkwardly pushes his jaw down and in.
Also, I love the fact that Guida is watching dos Anjos throughout the exchange instead of just swinging wildly. Too many guys don’t bother to look where they’re punching once things get hectic.
I suspect each punch broke the jaw once. The first punch may have broken the jaw
and thus made it less able to absorb the forces from subsequent punches, and more likely to break again.

Wow, Guida with some tight punches actually..lol. But despite his improving stand-up, dos Anjos left some major defensive holes open (opposite hand not up to guard face while punching), leading to getting clipped in that GIF. Hope he comes back stronger after a speedy recovery.
I was thinking the same.
Guida looked awesome in that gif. He’s improving for sure.
Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.

I hear that while he's in the hospital, Dos Anjos is getting a mandatory testicle reduction,
because this man is just too ballsy.

I slammed my finger in my locker at work and tore the nail off, then after that I couldn’t play video games because it hurt to hold the controller.
I’m a fucking pussy
Hope rafael has a succesful surgery and quick recovery...
He looked good on the feet in this fight. I’ve been following this guy since he was with Gracie Fusion. I think they can make a contender out of this guy if they give him the right fights.
