UFC 118: Edgar vs. Penn 2 In-Depth Preview

BJ Penn talks Frankie Edgar - "I see his whole team run and pick him up. All your boys put you on their shoulders and dance you around in front of the judges and try to steal the victory. I'm not going to be a part of that. Whatever, man. That's the man you are. You're the Ultimate Fighting Champion? Okay. I got you. It's a joke."

"I'm not afraid to exchange with him in any way. I don't think he wants to exchange with me. He's going to be running around. He's just going to try to jazz up what he did last time. A little quicker, a little better, maybe throw in a little kick. His corner, they don't have much to work with. They've just got little Frankie Edgar. They don't have the knockout king or the submission king. They've just got Frankie Edgar."

Edged? Stolen?? I dunno.

I certainly don’t think that Edgar “dominated” Penn that April, but he did win the fight. No question about it.

Penn couldn’t catch him. And when he sat and waited for him? Edgar touched him and got out.

For Rogan to suggest that he “edged” him (I took that as it was a “close” decision) and BJ to feel like the judges should have called it the other way…

… I think that’s unfair to Edgar’s strategy that evening.

Ha!

That’s your opinion…

… I think Edgar controlled the fight by forcing Bj out of his style-of-fight. Edgar was more active and won the final two rounds. The first three were not decisive rounds for either fighter.

he [Edgar] did win the fight. No question about it
The first three were not decisive rounds for either fighter.

So you’re saying that BJ could have won the first three rounds but Edgar definitely won the fight, right?

by ufc4 on Aug 13, 2010 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think it was a horrid decision.

I gave Frankie rounds 4 and 5. IMO it was a prefrence thing. Edgar landed more shots, but Penn landed the cleaner more effective strikes.

Actually...

Edgar didn’t land more strikes.

I gave rounds 4 and 5 to Frankie as well, but that still leaves rounds 1-3 to the Champ….Horrid Decision.

Edgar won that fight on body language and poor judging.

Anything else is revisionist history.

All the blogs had it as Penn or a draw, Fightmetric had it for Penn.
Even Compustrike, which EVERYONE who argued that Edgar won bandwagoned, has it at best a draw under ten point must, round by round (though it does claim more total strikes for Frankie).

Frankie Edgar is fantastic, and he shocked the world, but he should not have been awarded that win (In fact, I think Matt Serra had a better case to pick up a decision when he fought BJ).

And it’s unfortunate to see the fans who suddenly turn around and call the judges’ decision unassailable in this instance while every other time we all freely acknowledge that this sport has crap judging, because this time it supports the outcome they wanted.

(Not saying that applies to you ChicagoMarine, you’re calling it how you watched it. But a lot of the people who argue for the validity of scoring a UD for Edgar take that stance)

by LBo on Aug 11, 2010 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Funny – I’m a huge BJ fan, and I thought Frankie barely edged him out.

But I don’t see Serra as having done enough to beat BJ. BJ didn’t look good in that fight but he still took two rounds easily.

by MMABookworm on Aug 11, 2010 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

This was a fight you really had to watch in HD.

The way that BJ kept snapping his head back to avoid the punches really made it look like more strikes were landing that actually were.

Don't believe a word I say, I don't train BJJ.

It doesn’t add credibility that the other guy “stole the fight” if right afterwards you are seen hanging onto the fence staring at the ground dejectedly.

But that’s only cause trying to influence judges isn’t BJ’s style.
It’s not that he thought that he’d lost, of course not.

by SuperCool on Aug 11, 2010 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I was going to say the same thing. I thought that during the time that BJ knew that he lost the fight just by seeing his body language. He had the look of a fighter who looks like he knew that he lost the fight.

Yep, just shows how little BJ knows about the judging process.

BJ really makes me dislike him when he gets like this.

Edgar won a decision

He did all the right things, just enough not to lose and convince some judges to give him points.

Why is it I can’t help feeling that he didn’t really take the belt from BJ?

It’s time for BJ to stop whining and throw down, or fade away.

The one thing that Frankie has...

is his amazing footwork, like the preview said. As I recall, the only thing BJ really got him with last time were those counter left hooks. If Frankie can keep up the pace and control position like he did last time, and plan a counter to those hooks, he can win the standup pretty easily. Of course, I have very little idea what he’s like on the ground, but it’s fair to say BJ has the advantage there.

by Andy Davis on Aug 11, 2010 9:50 PM EDT reply actions

Damnit, that was supposed to be a replay to the above.

by Andy Davis on Aug 11, 2010 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Penn will have no respect for Edgars power and he’ll eat a few shots if necessary to take Edgar down. Once Edgar hits the mat it’s over for him. There is a reason that Penn is a heavy favorite in the rematch. He’s better.

I dont think BJ said

“little” kick or “little” Frankie Edgar. I don’t hear that word being used. I think he says “maybe throw a kick” and “They’ve only got Frankie Edgar.”

Lets not add more insults to what BJ actually says. Please fix that.
