This is a good card

Almost better than UFC 120. ;-)

by CaptnAmerca on Aug 11, 2010 1:45 PM EDT reply actions

Why can't they have $5 ppvs?

I remember they used to have NHB cards for 5 bucks in the early days, which reportedly did more sales than big boxing cards. I’m not sure how the pricing works, but a lower price would give them better leverage volume wise.

Your answer...

100,000 buys at $30 = $3,000,000
500,000 buys at $5 = $2,500,000

by B.H. Farnsworth on Aug 11, 2010 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah...I don't think it'll do 100k buys...

just wanted to use nice round numbers to show that 400,000 more buys at $5 a pop is less revenue.

I mean, realistically this will do like…20-30,000 buys. Maybe less. Let’s say it does 10,000 just to be ultra-realistic. That’d bring in $300,000. PPV companies probably take 30%ish so you’re at $210,000 now. Then you subtract the production costs (which I’m not even going to guess) and the fighter pay and you’re not talking a lot of money.

Now, if they were selling it for $5 it may attract some extra viewers but I really doubt it would be that many but let’s go totally unrealistic and say it attracts 5x the audience by being cheaper and they do 50,000 buys instead. $250,000 in PPV revenue total minus the 30% guess on cable/sat company takes and you’re at $175,000. So they have $35,000 less in revenue from PPV with the same exact production costs and fighter pay.

PPV company only takes 30%? Wouldn’t it be more like Shark Fights gets 30%? Even the UFC doesn’t get 70% of the take from PPV money.

http://www.instrength.com

by Tim Burke on Aug 11, 2010 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

It's probably closer to 40% now that I'm thinking about it.

The idea that 50% or more of PPV revenue goes to cable companies is largely incorrect. That being said, I’m sure the UFC has a better deal and a lower percentage goes to the cable/sat companies.

The % taken is less important here than just trying to explain the reasoning that you’ll probably never see $5 ppv’s again.

For a fledgling operation with no track record? You think?

by Jonathan Snowden on Aug 26, 2010 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I realize that those numbers are hypothetical, but 100,000 buys seems wildly optimistic given that even Affliction struggled to break that barrier.

Using your figures, lets say they priced it at $10, they would do better with the bump in sales than from a higher priced ppv. Its worth exploring IMO.

by cyke on Aug 11, 2010 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

$10-12 sounds about right for this card. I would probably purchase it for that amount. Cost no more than a movie ticket these days. I’d even sit through a few ads for that, too.

by Dave Strummer on Aug 11, 2010 1:56 PM EDT reply actions

I really doubt they will be able to pay all the fighters on the card, and the promotion will fail. It’s just happened too often. They do have 12 cards supposedly so far, but instead of adding a big name fight to headline the show with several unknowns, they have stacked it with guys that make more than 10k per fight. I don’t know what the gate will do, but the ppv will regardless be low, with them getting maybe $100k. They won’t be advertising to mainstream audiences.

I don’t understand these guy’s business model. It’s great to have these other fighters fight, but lets make sure they are getting paid.

by p0wn on Aug 11, 2010 1:56 PM EDT reply actions

It’s a big jump up in talent for them but they’ve been around long enough that I don’t really have much reservation about their paying the fighters. Also, you can’t exactly not have the money to pay fighters in the states. This was a big part of why the Shine Fights card didn’t happen at all. Actually a much bigger part of the equation than the Thomas/Mayorga fight falling apart.

all about investors

The Shark Fights business plan is likely to lose money in the short term while building brand recognition by putting on stacked cards like these. They likely have investor money to cover the deficit. I would imagine there is plenty of investor cash out there for a growing sport like MMA, and having a card stacked with former high profile UFC fighters should be enough to attract some real money. Moosin turned the trick with a card no where near this calibre, so we know the money is out there.

shark fights is in a very separate situation than anyone else. they have run 12 cards with lesser quality stars, and are now setting up to do a PPV with some guys with bigger names. If this is a one time, or even a twice a year thing, there’s no point in wasting a ppv slot for a title fight for a title no one has ever heard of and may never hear of again. there’s also no point in tying themselves to these bigger names by trying to put the belt on one of them.

by Phildo on Aug 11, 2010 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, he was the Main Event in March(Doug)

…but he knows some bigger names and a defense of his title on the 11th will just create more publicity for the organization and bigger paychecks.

Don’t forget….Shark Fights gets people in the seats as well, they aren’t having shows where just 1,500 people show up.
