Dustin Hazelett dropping to lightweight for next UFC bout
Following his second-round TKO loss to Rick Story at UFC 117, Dustin Hazelett's coach Jorge Gurgel tells Heavy.com that "McLovin'" will move back down to 155 pounds for his next fight.
"[UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva’s going to have him back... He’s actually dropping to 155lbs. again, and I think it’s going to be a good move for him."

he needs more power and chin
not less from extreme weightcutting!

He’ll be able to control his opponents much better at 155, assuming the weight cut goes well for him. He just can’t handle strong wrestlers at 170.

could be
for his sake I hope so. But I’ll point to Nate Diaz to support my idea that this won’t end well for McLovin.

Paging Kid Nate...paging Kid Nate
There’s a Mr. Pequeno here to collect on an “I told you so” referencing yesterday’s post praising Rick Story, Phil Davis…..

Oh crap Dustin don't do it.
He’s cut bait for his next fight now.

mclovin vs pelligrino?
good ground battle possibly
and a good marker of where hes at

Dammit yeah that's a brain fart on my part
They need to give Hazelett someone who poses no threat striking.

I wouldn't mind seeing
Hazelett vs. Sotiriopolus. It will for sure end with someone getting submitted in a some weird position
This. That would be a step down for Soti, and an easy win at that.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.
Twitter me and what not.
He loses his next fight...
and he’s probably gone no matter what weight it’s at.

Thing is
Dustin does not really cut to fight at WW. He walks around at like 178 lbs. It’s not like it’s a huge cut for him to make 155. He’s long being oppossed to weight cutting but I’m glad he has reconsidered. He’s been on the wrong side of some brutality at Welter Weight
"Wait why didn't I kill that motherfvker"
Well, it's better than the current plan...
but yeah, he’d be better off putting on some muscle and staying at 170 than trying to drop 23 pounds and make 155. Pure gurgel thinking here, doing something that kinda sorta makes sense but is still dumb instead of doing something that makes perfect sense.
So much cock. A cock guy.

Yeah, this seems super retarded to me. I would recommend he starts bulking up, he’s like a pack of bones. He’s a really small welterweight. He’d be like a zombie at lightweight.
yep
I kinda had the idea he and hamill trained together some – I guess they don’t, but he needs some strength and conditioning tips that the hammer’s got already.

If he’s small at his current weight it would make sense to go down, not try to go up where he’d be even smaller against even larger guys.

I think his frame is about right for ww
but he’s a little too soft – lots of freeweights and wrestling practice might help him toughen up and be a beefier, more sinewy oppenent that a shorter, ripped guy like Story wouldn’t be able to manhandle so easily. I worry about him losing the strength he has if he drops divs.

Dustin seems such a great guy, but i’m not sure he’s physically rugged or strong enough for top level MMA, whatever the weight. He seems the kind of guy who could have a successful career outside of fighting.

Daley made him doubt himself
And Story took his will. This could be interesting, but I have a feeling he might not be in MMA much longer if he takes another loss.

Are you basing this entirely on the fact that he looks like a nerdy white guy?

Watch the fight against Story
He looked broken at the end.

He can only blame himself for the Daley loss
He thought he could stand-up with him and paid for it.

I need to see that fight.

Story
just battered him and backed him into the cage and then Dustin would go down. Story would pound on him for a few seconds and immediately back off and make the referee stand Hazelett up. He did that probably 4 or 5 times. Rick had no respect for Dustin’s stand up. That is what Dustin really needs in my opinion, not a drop in weight class.

Bring out the can?
I think they should maybe feed him a low level fighterfirstoff so he can get a win under his belt and get used to the cut before they give him a decent LW
If Andre wins
I have a feeling Hazlett vs. Winner would look a lot like Delgado vs Winner….
"Wait why didn't I kill that motherfvker"
This weight cut to Lightweight is something that I am against. The reason being is that it won’t fix his flaws in that his striking and standup defense need work, and his takedowns aren’t that good. Weight cutting isn’t going to fix that, and this looks like a case of using weight cutting as some sort of quick fix/remedy when the problem lies in Hazelett’s arsenal or lackthereof. I am a huge fan of Hazelett too, but he needs to know that he is still a work in progress.
He is not big enough for WW. People confuse height with size. Now and then people call me a big dude, I tell them I am a tall dude. My friend who is 5’8(Iam 6’2") and goes with me to martial arts class we weight the same(175) and he is stronger than me. My friend would be a lightweight and so would I, Hazlett is a tall lanky guy. 155 is the right weight.
ya i agree
Im 6’2 as well, naturally a lankier guy. I have cut weight for tournaments, etc. and i think being in a lower weight class is what most taller lankier guys should do.
With all the physical monsters at WW, (GSP, Daley, Koschek, Howard, Story, Ellenberger, etc) I think Hazellet should fight again at 155lbs. People forget he fought once at 155lbs in the UFC and looked almost the same, only a bit more shredded. If guys like guillard, gleison tibeau can dehydrate down to 155lbs i dont see why dustin couldnt.
