Takanori Gomi sent a message to the UFC lightweight division with a quick first round KO win over Tyson Griffin. A sharp right hand to the jaw dropped Griffin as he fired a lazy leg kick. The ref stopped the fight at 1:04 of the first.
Gomi, the legendary "Fireball Kid" who ruled over PRIDE's lightweight division from 2005 to 2007, entered this fight with his UFC career already on the ropes. He lost his UFC debut to Kenny Florian and didn't look good at all. He'd already fallen from his career heights with an embarrassing run in Sengoku before coming to the UFC. Against Tyson Griffin he was literally fighting for his professional life and he came through in dramatic fashion.
Griffin for his part came into the fight looking to get back on the winning track after getting shut down by Evan Dunham but no such luck tonight. Griffin has now lost two straight for the first time in his UFC career.
