Multiple Reports Indicate Strikeforce Has Signed Paul Daley to Six Fight Deal
Middle Easy broke the story:
Just hours ago, Paul Daley signed a six-fight Strikeforce contract. He will still fight at Shark Fights 13 which will go down September 11th at the Civic Center Coliseum in Amarillo, Texas (sort of a strange date to have an MMA event). His first opponent will be Evangelista Cyborg which denotes that he will still be competing at welterweight.
Paul Daley seems extraordinarily happy with the financial package that he received from Strikeforce. Not sure when Daley will debut in the organization but according to UnitedGlory.nl, he will also be competing in a welterweight tournament (along with Shinya Aoki) which will kick off October 16th and wrap-up April 2011. Of course, all of this really means that we may see some of the greatest smack-talk in the history of MMA if Paul Daley vs. Nick Diaz goes down.
MMA Weekly confirms:
The news was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com by sources close to the situation on Sunday, and first reported by MiddleEasy.com.
Daley's camp was unavailable for comment, but sources have indicated that the British bomber will still participate in the upcoming Shark Fights card in September that he was previously announced for, although an opponent has not been named yet.
...
There has been no word on when Daley would make his Strikeforce debut, but the they are currently putting together a proposed card for October that may see the Brit in his promotional debut for the organization.
Signing Daley is a no brainer for Strikeforce given their talent starved welterweight division. Daley vs Mr. Cyborg could be some real fireworks and Daley vs Nick Diaz would be epic.
UPDATE [from Luke Thomas]: USA TODAY's Sergio Non talked to Strikeforce directly and says not so fast:
Just got off phone with Strikeforce's Afromowitz, who says Daley isn't signed yet, though the company expects it Monday or Tuesday.

They should have a good old fashioned debate and James Toney could be the moderator.

Great signing
This was inevitable. I really hope these tournaments actually come to fruition. That could be a lot of fun.

Paul’s history of missing weight might be a red flag though. I know WW is all but dead in SF right now and he’ll breathe some life into it, but Daley at 185 would be interesting as well in SF.

I can’t help but think he would get murdered by the bigger wrestlers/BJJ artists. I think he needs to stay at 170 to continue the success he’s had over the last 18 months.

I agree that 170 is the best place for him and the organization. I just hope he doesn’t continue to miss weight. Not that SF really cares, they could just put him in a 181.146 pound catchweight fight with Scott Smith or something equally asinine.

So wait...
who is having a WW tournament? Strikeforce?
I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.
No
The WW tournament Daley is participating in isn’t with Strikeforce. Strikeforce’s welterweight champ is Nick Diaz and they’ve given no indication of planning to organize a welterweight tourney. They are still discussing a possible MW tourney for later in the year, even though Kennedy vs. Jacare is for the title, and they are discussing a 4-person ladies’ one night tournament also. But not welterweight.
That is basically what I was leading up to.
I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.
Coker was on Sherdog’s Beatdown a week or two ago and he said they wanted to do more tournaments in general. He said he wanted to have both a world champion and a tournament champion, I guess like Pride use to do. That what he is probably talking about.
That is hilarious...
considering the kiddie pool depth of their talent in most weight classes.

So how many SF fighters does that make under suspension? When you fuck up, Strikeforce is there.
Now they just need to sign Barnett to make it all complete.
If he hadn't fought in Australia
He could’ve been given an immediate title shot with his loss to Josh Koscheck.
Nick Garcia is the Brian Russell of MLS but 10 times worse.

Echo here
Daley vs. Nick Diaz will be one for the ages. Diaz being one of my 3-4 favorite fighters, I hope he would be smart enough to look to follow more or less the Jake Shields plan (granted Nick doesn’t have the lightning-quick wrestling shot of Shields) and take Daley down early and submit him.
good signing and i smell a new champ on the horizon in sf

Possible but...
Not likely. Nick Diaz is a much better fighter overall than Paul Daley, and is holding the belt. The only think I question with him in that fight is the same thing I always question with Nick Diaz – his gameplan, his fight IQ inside the cage. He loves to stand and bang with guys, and against most fighters that serves him fine, but if Daley catches him with that murderous left hook it could signal the beginning of the end.
Bottom line, it’s Diaz’ fight to lose when/if these guys compete. If he fights a smart fight he beats Daley. I wouldn’t be in any rush to crown Semtex just yet.
He'll strike with Daley and he'll get knocked out.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

He didn’t stand long with Mach what makes you think he will with Daley?

Diaz vs. Daley
If Koscheck got under Daley’s skin with the trash talk DURING their fight, then Daley will probably sucker punch Diaz after their fight. Then Team Caesar Gracie would have to run in and soccer stomp Daley and kick him in the head.
I don't know how you play soccer
but I’d probably consider removing the stomp from you’re game.

Daley improved alot while he was in the UFC and with Shields gone his only real competition in Strikeforce is Diaz. I honestly think Diaz would try and out box Daley which isn’t a good idea. Daley will win the Strikeforce WW belt as soon as he gets a title shot.

If he moved up to MW it would be harder comp for him but alot more interesting fights. I’d love to see him and Dan Henderson at 185 trading those huge left hooks. He could also fight Robbie Lawler or Jacare at MW.
by JCBee on Aug 1, 2010 7:25 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Hendo won't fight another fight at MW.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

Why do u say that? Did he say this cause I dont recall seeing anything about it. He should be happy to now that Shields is gone. I thought he wanted to win belts in multiple divisions.

I don't see the Huge appeal in Daley vs. Diaz
From an entertainment perspective, the trash-talk would be explosive but as far as the actual match goes, I see Daley having a distinct disadvantage. Diaz has a slight 2" reach advantage as he does with most of his opponents which should allow him to play his boxing game of peppering Daley with pitter-patter punches to slowly wear him down and then go in for the kill. Even if Diaz does get tagged, he has shown good resiliency and an iron chin. On the ground of course, Diaz should have a huge advantage, having a BJJ black belt onder Cesar Grace while Daley has shown weakness on the ground. The only real problem I see for Diaz is that should he want to take Daley down, his wrestling isn’t likely strong enough to take him there.
The appeal is that Diaz thinks his boxing is good enough to stand with Daley and like u said his takedowns probably aren’t good enough to get Daley down at will and Daley has dynamite in his hands. Reach or not if Daley touches him he’s goin out. I hate that pitty pat shit Diaz does even though it’s effective, so I know I would tune in just to hopefully see he get KTFO.
by JCBee on Aug 1, 2010 7:30 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Oh trust me, I hate that pitty pat shit too and would love nothing more than to see Diaz KTFO. I just don’t think it would happen. Remember, everyone thought Diaz was stupid to stand and trade with Robbie Lawler until he knocked Robbie out so it’s not out of the question here.
by dreamers_12345 on Aug 1, 2010 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions
I think that’s why the fight is interesting, it could go either way and these are the only top WW fighters Strikeforce has so it’s the obvious fight to make. I think it’s stupid if they are giving Daley a big money 6 fight deal and are going to risk him losing to Cyborg. They should capitalize on his UFC popularity asap.
by JCBee on Aug 1, 2010 7:46 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
That pitty pat shit
Knocks everyone out. Well, nearly everyone. The problem would be that Daley has a MURDEROUS left hook – one punch KO power. Diaz hasn’t fought anyone with that much raw power since Lawler himself, whom Diaz caught clean but it could just as well have gone the other way.
The thing is, Diaz is damn near IMPOSSIBLE to finish. He’s like Chris Lytle. Have a look at his Sherdog profile. I’m not looking now, but I think he had the cut stoppage to Noons, and beyond that may never have been stopped, or might have been stopped once. Dude is a terminator and keeps coming forward. So if this fight occurs you’ll have Daley who finishes kids left and right if they stand with him, against Diaz who probably will stand with him and yet doesn’t get finished ever. Meanwhile until/unless Diaz IS finished, his ratio of strikes to Daley’s will be like 3:1, 4:1, even 5:1. Daley better hope to weather the storm and not get tired out by that “pitty pat shit” that finishes just about everyone. If he starts getting stung by those little shots and gets baffled, he will be in Diaz’ world.
I don’t know it’s just my opinion but Diaz has never really fought the top tier of WW’s especially the last few years. He’s beaten of blown up 55ers, subpar fighters WW’s and a couple legends past there prime. Paul Daley is a legit WW and a big WW at that. I just don’t think his average game plan will work with Daley and his power.
by JCBee on Aug 1, 2010 7:59 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
You sound like you’re taking it personally lol. The facts are that Diaz throws TONS of punches, many of which land. If Diaz had horrifying knockout power then he wouldn’t have to throw so many punches in the first place. What he does is throw light punches that wear down his opponent and frustrate them and then goes in for the kill. No one is arguing Diaz can’t t(ko) someone but his style of boxing is certainly not being a power puncher but more like bee-stinging his opponent into submission.

Semtex vs Cyborg
I like this fight. It looks like they want to give him a couple fights to build up to Diaz. I just hope he doesn’t lose one along the way.
So that 170 tournament with Aoki is really happening?
I’m not sure who I’d want to win if Aoki and Daley fight each other. Both of them annoy the hell out of me, but they’re both so fucking fun to watch.
