Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez Confirmed for October in Anaheim
Recent speculation suggested that Brock Lesnar's next UFC heavyweight title defense against top contender Cain Velasquez would happen in Indianapolis in September, but those rumors fell through when UFC president Dana White denied that report. We now have confirmation from Ariel Helwani at MMA Fighting that the fight instead has been signed for UFC 121 in October in Anaheim, California:
Brock Lesnar will make his next title defense against Cain Velasquez at UFC 121.
UFC president Dana White confirmed with MMA Fighting Friday night that the heavyweight title fight will take place at the yet-to-be officially announced event, scheduled for Oct. 23 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
Although not yet official, the PPV event is expected to take place on October 23rd at the Honda Center, last visited by the UFC for UFC 76: Knockout, back in September of 2007. The event takes place one week after UFC 120 in London, England, which airs on Spike TV in the US. The 121 event was initially rumored to be heading for Germany, but those plans have apparently fallen through.
The rumored card for UFC 121 now includes:
- Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez
- Quinton "Rampage" Jackson vs. TBA
- Sam Stout vs. Paul Taylor

If this card holds up
with all of these scheduled fights, gotta be one of the best cards ever. 92 was stacked and 100 was nice, but the top 3 fights are all great fights.
I told you not to f*ck with me.
I just can’t imagine them putting all those huge names on one card. Machida/Rampage as the third fight of the night? I would love it but I don’t see it happening. 3 of those fights could headline a show in November. I guess it will depend on how quick Silva fucks up Sonnen’s retarded mouth next month.

He put pen to paper and had fights moved a lot of times. I have tickets that say Brock-Mir II on them for the UFC that ended up as Machida-Rashad
How did I end up on this bandwagon and why does everything say property of Chael Sonnen?
Yeah that card went from EPIC to okay real quick.
At least you saw teh stanky leg.
I’m a huge Machida fan so I was ok with it. It went from being awesome because it was an event fight to awesome because I got to see Machida win the title.

Guys, can we quit it with the complaining about
“my fanshot was deleted, but I had it up first”, “where’d my fanpost go?”, etc etc.?
If it’s a big story, especially involving Brock, we’re going to make sure we do a feature story on the front page, because it gets a hell of a lot more traffic than a fanpost or a fanshot. It doesn’t matter if you posted yours 5 or 10 minutes earlier. We value your contributions, but that’s just the way it is.

well most of the other blogs
just promote the original fanpost or fanshot to the front page and give credit to the original poster instead of stealing the credit

Shhhhhhh
Who cares what other blogs do?
Who cares that it is the normal policy for Bloody Elbow?
He can do what he wants. It’s his blog. He is a news and community moderator. What credentials do you have? We aren’t featured writers, we’re just fans. We should know damn well that if there’s a news story or a quote or we have an idea for a fanpost that we should sleep on it and give someone else the chance to post it.
You want credit? CREDIT?!?! Your “credit” is that you get to comment on it.

Too bad he didn't take your "Shhhhh" to heart earlier.
He has a history, and falsely accusing me of “stealing” earned him a lifetime membership to the Rule #4 club.
We totally stole Rule #4 for the Orioles SBN blog, btw.

The thing people have to understand,
is that front page stories, get hits from google, while fanposts/fanshots do not…. BROCKLESNAR and other big news deserves a story, not just a fanpost/shot.
now, on the small stories, and info, if it looks & reads well, then it is likely to get fronted. :)

actually,
HT is given to the person who you acknowledge for letting you know about the news. If he saw it first from the original source, then an HT shouldn’t be given… technically, but most people just use it to give props and become nice by giving an HT anyway…
oh and one more thing, most of the staff get news then write a post that is scheduled to publish at a certain time (to give the latest post it’s deserved exposure), so that may seem like “they’re late”, which in case, they’re really not. (on some cases)
by Anton Tabuena on Jul 10, 2010 5:13 AM EDT up reply actions
Snowden hit me with an HT
for the Chael Sonnen post earlier. I thought it was nice of him to do. I didn’t feel upset about it going to the main page either because that’s where it should be. It would be cool to have a fanpost of mine be promoted to the main page but I don’t really write fanposts that would qualify for that. Either way, no one should be upset.

People are pretty pumped about landing Smoak in return, as they realized it was only a matter of time before Lee was traded. Lee said at the beginning of the season that he wasn’t signing an extension until after the season. Once the M’s season went sour, the trade was going to happen.

Yeah
this card is so not gonna look like this when it actually happens.
"With great power comes great responsibility" -Spiderman's Uncle
Yeah
From a pure financial point of view, why have so many guys who collect ppv bonuses (Brock, Silva, Rampage and maybe Lyoto) all on the same card, when you can just have Brock, sell probably as many ppv and not split it with anyone else. At most they keep one of the other fights. Maybe.
Financially it probably wouldn’t work, but also the timeline for some of these fights wouldn’t work either unless Anderson comes out of his next fight completely unscathed. Sorry I meant the winner of Anderson/Chael comes out unscathed, but even if Chael wins Anderson will still probably come out without any damage.
"With great power comes great responsibility" -Spiderman's Uncle
Everytime I think of Brock
I think of a promo he cut back in 2003 with the WWE leading up to the Judgement Day PPV against the Big Show…."You can run all over the back Big Show, you can bully anybody you want….well I aint standing for it…..you want to bully somebody Big Show…..TRY TO BULLY, BROCK LESNAR!!!!!!

Better change that rumored fighting list because once Sonnen works Silva it’s going to be until 2011 before he fights again.

Agreed...doubt he wins, but he will work Anderson over before being submitted.
Even though I don’t think he will be able to win, Sonnen will expose Anderson’s marginal TDD and somewhat over-rated BJJ, thereby removing some of the aura of invulnerability that Anderson now has.
Because Silva’s TDD is suspect at best, I anticipate Sonnen will be able to expose this flaw and show how Anderson would be vulnerable to a better MMA wrestler.
by BigDNotDallas on Jul 10, 2010 12:42 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Chael will work him over
with his marshmallow ground and pound at worst. Silva may not be a BJJ wizard but he is good at control guys and keeping them neutral on the ground, he was able to keep Henderson and Thales Leites from really being able to do anything significant.
And btw, not to be rude or anything but do you really need to repeat the same posts pretty much word for word all over the place?

Fair point about not mixing it up much, still just looking for informed dialog on the subject…(Which obviously excludes the unlikely to occur extremes…).
by BigDNotDallas on Jul 10, 2010 2:12 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Here’s some informed dialogue, then:
Silva’s take down defence isn’t the greatest, but it isn’t awful, but what will prevent Sonnen from getting takedowns at will are Silva’s speed and footwork. There’s a reason that it’s so hard to get within range on Silva: he’s a master at controlling his positioning and distance. He doesn’t sprawl much because he rarely has to and not just because people don’t shoot on him. It’s been no surprise to any of his opponents since his first fight with Franklin that standing and trading is a bad idea, but the reason that no one can capitalize on it isn’t just because he hasn’t faced “pure wrestlers”. It’s because even a pure wrestler needs to set up the correct range for a single or double leg shot – and I’m assuming here that no one is stupid enough to suggest takedowns from the clinch – and Silva doesn’t let people do that. When you think your range is just right, he isn’t there anymore; instead he’s countering as guys awkwardly stumble around the ring after him. And when he chooses to come forward, which is not often but it does happen, he hits people from what seems like impossible angles because his positioning in the stand up game is damn near flawless. Oh, and he has pinpoint accuracy on many of his strikes, and hits like a ton of bricks.
Chael has a chance in this fight. Chael will likely get Silva down a couple of times. Chael is not going to run a take down clinic on Silva because Silva is extremely good at avoiding the positioning in the fight that would allow that, and when he is in that kind of range, Chael is going to have to wade through a sea of fists, knees and elbows which land with far more frequency for much more damage than most other fighters can hope to generate. Speed kills, and the speed advantage is decisively in Silva’s favour. And for as much as Chael has excellent wrestling technique, Silva has equally good technique on his footwork and positioning. There’s more to Silva’s control of the location of the fight than a sprawl.
So there ya go. Tell me why I’m wrong.
(I’m not a huge Silva fan, nor a huge Sonnen fan. I just don’t see Sonnen getting Silva down without getting his face broken first.)
And isn’t this supposed to be a story on Lesnar/Cain? Why are we talking about Silva/Sonnen again?
I need more sleep. Jet lag sucks.
"I'm AJB and I endorse this nut-puncher."
Good point about Lesnar/Cain...
Silva certainly has good avoidance skills due to his speed and footwork, and even Sonnen seems to agree he will have to eat a few shots to get him down. Of course, like Lesnar’s speed for a man his size, everyone seems to somehow underestimate just how hard Anderson hits, all the way back to Leben.
He doesn’t look like a body builder or a power lifter, but most who do lack the ability to strike nearly as hard as one might think. Silva’s body type + technique allow him to strike extremely hard, and I don’t see Chael surviving too much of that.
Still will be interesting to see how much success he has.
Unlike most, I don’t consider TDD as strictly wrestling based moves, including the sprawl. Lyoto Machida has elite, but totally unorthodox TDD for example.
I do disagree about no one trying to take Anderson down from the clinch, but only a few capable of doing so come to mind (Machida & Jon Jones for starters).
Bottom line – will likely take a better MMA wrestler than Sonnen to beat Anderson, although if he doesn’t get KTFO in the first 2 minutes, he has a chance to do some damage.

Name one... that is currently active in the middleweight division
So if/when he goes up will Rashad, Rampage, Randy?
Didnt mention Jon Jones because very unlikely they fight because of Jones Age and Silvas their eras and primes will just miss each other i believe

That's kind of the rub...
There are no elite MMA wrestlers at 185. GSP moving up would have a good chance against Anderson with his combo of best MMA wrestling + crazy speed/explosiveness. Kos or Shields would have a small chance of winning (better than Sonnen IMO).
Personally, barring injury, I see LHW/MW playing out something like this over the next 1 1/2 years:
Anderson – moves up and takes out Shogun for title. Owns division until Jones gets a shot at him.
Rashad – loses to Shogun and moves to his more natural weight of 185 after Anderson moves up.
Machida – crushes Rampage, loses to Shogun again, then also moves to MW (he doesn’t cut for LHW) after Anderson moves up.
Rampage – loses to Machida, continues his fade into glorified gatekeeper status.
Couture/Frankin/Griffin – no longer relevant to title picture, but would love Randy circa 2004 vs. Anderson.
Jones – takes title from Anderson. Machida is only current LHW I see giving Jones problems (after 2-3 more fights).
by BigDNotDallas on Jul 10, 2010 1:24 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Rub indeed (That is if Rub is short for Rubbish)
I’ll give Sonnen as just as good of an MMA wrestler as Jake Shields which is outstanding wrestling.
My problem with knocking Sonnen is that now if/when Spider wins he will continue not to get the credit….
When no matter how great of MMA Wrestling and Explosiveness GSP has it wouldn’t be enough for Anderson and a win over a natural 185 should be praised more than a win over a natural 170…
As for next 1 1/2 years :
Anderson- beats Chael, Vitor and occassionaly comes back down to beat any seemingly dominant champion. Then if and its a big IF Jones has improved on his striking and transition game in combination with Silva falling out of his prime than Jones will beat him and attain the title.
Rashad- I see the new Rashad who is very active in transitions and staying in the middle being able to take down most current lhw’s and beating Shogun and Machida in Rematch
Machida- Retiring after another loss to Shogun or just more consecutive losses
Rampage- losing to Machida or Shogun and being slow to take fights after all his gimmie and picked fights are done.
Couture- Please retire pretty please
Franklin- Could be a terrific gatekeeper would be a good test for Jones since Forrest says he doesn’t want that fight.
Griffin- continuing picking his fights until being ebarassed by Machida and Jon Jones when he eventually is forced to fight them
Jones- Is able to takedown Machida and can hold the title if Anderson doesn’t move up in weight.

Sonnen is an American - Silva don't like Americans in the UFC
Leban – KO rd 1
Franklin – TKO rd 1
Lutter – Sub rd 2
Marquratd – TKO rd 1
Franklin – TKO rd 2
Henderson – Sub rd 2
Irvan – KO rd 1
Griffin – KO – rd 1
We know how his fights went with the Brazillians (Leites/Maia). I guess he doesn’t hate North America as a whole (Cote) but just Americans. Do you see a trend here? Sonnen will fit right into my trending data.

I find it hard to believe that Anderson or Sonnen would be ready or willing to turn around that fast...or are they planning to channel Chris Leben...
AND…what happened to Rampage/Little Nog? At least Rampage could potentially make that semi-entertaining, its hard to picture a more one-sided fight than Machida/Rampage…

He's joking if Bisping/Akiyama is seriously a "gem" when he puts up free London shows every year
And the main events for the Spike shows in England are getting progressively worse.
CroCop/Gonzaga -— Rampage/Hendo (title fight, no counterprogram motive IIRC) -—- Bisping/Leben -——- Sanchez/Stevenson -——- Couture/Vera -——— Bisping/Akiyama
Granted the Bisping/Sexyama fight could be a great one, but that can’t be the big fight.

yus! im only an hr away....
Page/lesner on the same card has ppv bonanza written all over it. If (as I’m sure they will) the ufc plays up Cain’s Mexican heritage and gives page a forest/machine (I’m thinking the latter) than expect this to do somewhere between 1.25 & 1.5m easy. Brock, Page, & the ufc have never been more popular than they are now and both there last fights did 1m plus
