SBNation.com's David St Martin talks to Justin Wren:
You're a training partner of Shane Carwin's. What do you think about the way people have criticized his cardio coming into the second round of his fight with Brock Lesnar?
Shane was definitely in shape for that fight. It was just a lot of different things going into it. It was his first fight to go to the second round, he almost finished it earlier in the fight, and he spent a ton of energy trying to finish it. I'm not trying to be biased, but I think eight out of ten refs would have stopped it in the first round. It was a great job by Brock to come back, but I think that if it had been stopped not many people would have complained. That's also a testament to Brock being the champion, being able to fight through that.
How hard do you guys go in the gym?
Shane and I? It's fun. Sometimes we'll just bite down on our mouthpieces and bang. I don't know if we go 100%, but yea, his punches hurt. It's something that really rattles you. His hands are so big and he's so strong and powerful that for Brock to withstand it, says a whole lot. No one has been able to take that punishment from him, not one person.

*waits for Carwin haters to distort compliments into being a sore loser somehow*
Wren is a class act and a very talented young guy. He’ll be back and he’ll be nasty in 3 years.

yeah
he’s a guy I was expecting more from on TUF. I thought he got a raw deal getting cut since his losses to Nelson and Madsen were very debatable. But let the kid get some seasoning in the small shows and see what he can do.

I'd be much more upset with the cut
if I didn’t think it was the right thing for him. He’s so young and raw still. TUF isn’t like the old days where Forrest came in with wins over Monson and Fulton or Diego was already a KOTC champ. Wren is the exact sort of prospect who could have his career get pretty messed up by being in the UFC too early.
I think he’ll earn some decent regional paydays off his name recognition (thanks Kimbo!) and extra cage time will do him good. It’s easy to overlook, but with five more years of experience he’ll only be as old as Cain is now. He’s got a hell of a future, especially if he keeps training with high level guys.

very true
which speaks to some of the very real problems the UFC has with their approach to developing talent.

Wren and Demeico are the 2 guys from that season that I am still interested in seeing fight that did’nt make the cut.

Apparently Demico’s got a fight tomorrow night

sweet…is it something that is watchable, or just a very local card?

Doesn’t look like they’re televising it, but FSN is listed as one of their sponsors, so they might air it later. It’s “Rumble on the Ridge XI” if you can find it.

Why would anyone?
He doesn’t blame the ref, directly or indirectly, for Carwin gassing out. Nor lactic acidosis. Nor bronchitis. Nor Tay-Sachs disease.
I agree than 8 out of 10 refs would’ve stopped it. 8 out of 10 refs suck for the most part. And if it would’ve been stopped, not too many people would’ve complained because the WWF wrestler lost. Wren puts the onus on Carwin where it rightfully should be. I agree with all of his comments.
I liked him on the show and hopefully he can win his way back into the big dance.
Cause there's only one, and that's me
You understand? for all that fighting, you understand
That sucka think he good, that sucka think he can whoop me
And i know he can't whoop me, Ay boy, the n**** whole style is chump

He is such
A truly good person. I’ve known Justin for a long time and his first fght was on the same card as my 2nd. If you ever get a chance to interview him ask him about how he got his first fight. It’s an interesting story.

He mentions it in the full interview. His third fight had really nice story:
I was in the stands and a guy went into the cage and called out anyone in the arena because his opponent didn’t show up. I raised my hand, won that fight too. I think I had just turned 19.
