The Grappling Dummy - Greg Nelson Feature Interview
Manto Presents: The Grappling Dummy - Greg Nelson from martial farts on Vimeo.
Presented by Manto.
In this episode, I talk to Greg Nelson. Greg is one of the most famous MMA coaches in the world, working with a number of fighters from the amateur circuit all the way up to top level athletes like Sean Serk and Brock Lesnar.
Just like all truly great martial artists, Greg is an incredibly nice guy and has the ability to put someone at ease instantly. It comes across in the video just how friendly he is.
We spoke at length about a lot of things, from his martial arts background (he medalled in BJJ in the Pan Ams) to his beating a rare form of cancer twice, and what superpower he'd like to have.
Greg also showed us a nice BJJ technique - a lethal guillotine from the sprawl, and a sweep from under the sprawl. It was an absolute pleasure to meet and train with Greg. I hope you enjoy the video.
Many thanks to Fightlinker without whom The Grappling Dummy wouldn't exist.
Lastly, Scramble!
Filmed at the Gary Baker academy, May 2010.
PS Just so it's clear - I'm not saying Greg Nelson is a dummy. It just happens to be the name of the show.

OK
It looks alright on mine though and I am using a fairly crummy computer at work… But thanks!

Very interesting
I wish more people would put the time to make nice, long, informative interviews.
We also learned that you’re not a real guy…
"...ride life straight to perfect laughter,
it's the only good fight there is."
ha!
he corrected himself… “who does this for a living”… :)

This is tremendous, but after about five minutes the music was making me want to die…

hmmm
Point is well taken. I wasn’t entirely sure about the music.

If it had switched up...
…instead of looping, it would have made a big difference. Really great though, different than any other MMA product out there. Kudos to you.

Thanks man, lesson learned. Filming a new one this weekend, with an up and coming uk BJJ black belt – will take all the advice on board!

really excellent interview
I knew a little bit about Nelson but def glad I learned more.
It’s very cool to me that the torch has been passed in a way from Bruce Lee > Dan Inosanto > Erik Paulson & Greg Nelson > Brock Lesnar = UFC heavyweight champ.
Lesnar seems like an obnoxious jerk, but he’s certainly surrounded himself with an incredible team of people and by all accounts is just a sponge for learning.

indeed
It wasn’t until I sat down with Greg that I really realised how connected he was to Bruce Lee / JKD / Inosanto etc. and how cool it was that someone like that could be associated with the heavyweight champ of modern day MMA.

Damn...
that explains a LOT about why brock is improving so quickly
Very few people in all MMA are doing this quality interview, w/ such a deserving subject.
Please keep it up!
Nelson's a good coach
but ultimately it comes down to the fighter — Sean Sherk and Nick Thompson never showed that much growth.
