from an interview earlier today.
Listen, the only thing that would suck is that if I were to fight Gegard, I’d have to cut the weight now and I might not make it. And if I fight Jake, then, you know, I’m prepared to fight anyone. I’m waiting for this opportunity. I came here to fight for Dream, for the Japanese fans, I’m prepared. My goal right now is to be in the best physical shape of my life right now. Like I said, I’m just waiting, for this opportunity, as much as possible.
Right now I’m walking around at 230 and I’m usually fighting my opponents at 215 or a catch-weight of 220. But you know, if heavyweight is where it’s going to be, that’s where I’ll go. But my goal is to eventually get down to 205. I’m just waiting for an organization to pay me decently to get down to that weight to fight.

So, as we speak, Ricco is cutting 15 pounds?

ah, typo. Ricco is crazy to cut so much water in one day.

This is messed up.

Why can’t Mousasi and O’Brien just fight at heavyweight. Mousasi knew he’d be outweighed already. It’s not like it’s for a belt.

Having him fight Ricco on this short notice is just unfair to everyone.

by HarmlessNinja on Jul 9, 2010 6:05 AM EDT reply actions

It is for a belt, it’s a LHW Grand Prix match, winners fight for the LHW Title.

Gegard is walking on thin ice already, taking on Jake when he’s got little to gain out of it…if Ricco was to step in and he lost then…man, what a hell of a couple of weeks it would have been then.

If I was Mousasi, I wouldn’t touch either fight with a 10 foot pole, you’ve got a big wrestler coming in over weight, and Ricco, who’s been doing good for himself lying low as of late, and isn’t going to walk in and let him win without a fight. Yeah. Fuck that.

So you would be ducking potential challengers.

Noted.

Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.

No, I’d not be putting myself in situations with high risk and little pay off. Mousasi gets no where fighting either guy, but he’s already shown that his wrestling isn’t where it needs to be in regards to defense. And thats why the Jake O’Brien fight is so dangerous. If Jake beats him, he just got beat by a UFC washout, and will significantly hurt his value as a fighter. And if Ricco beat him? Good lord. That’s hard to come back from.

I’d not even been taking short notice japanese fights, but if I’m not mistaken, Gegard owes them some fights, so it’s likely he just wants it out of the way.

It’s ok for minowa to fight a guy that weighs 100 pounds more than him but jake can’t fight because he’s a couple pounds over I don’t get that.

I say let’s just stop cutting corners and make the match up the world is waiting for. Minowa vs. Mousasi. The REAL super hulk champ will be crowned. lol

and it’s just one of the ways japanese promotions treat their fighters like shit.

If Ricco wins this, I’d like to see him get another shot in ufc.

Also would like all the mousasi fanboys to openly admit he’s overrated.

by kanodogg on Jul 9, 2010 8:15 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Fookin' Japan.

Nothing like asking a guy to cut 25 pounds and take on a different opponent on ridiculously short notice. Ricco wouldn’t even be in Japan if they had done him the courtesy of telling him his original opponent did not sign the contract.

It’s pretty lame. there are no other Hw’s on the card. They should have known more than a few days out that the Reem wasn’t going to show up and told Ricco to show up ready to fight at 205 in case something like this happened

by Phildo on Jul 9, 2010 8:55 AM EDT up reply actions

It sucks they’re asking him to cut weight so close to the fight, but who can honestly say they don’t want to see this fight happen? I’ve been really interested to see Ricco at 205, and he’s around 220lbs so it’s not impossible. I just hope he doesn’t look like James Irvin did.

by Dr. Octagon on Jul 9, 2010 9:47 AM EDT reply actions

I think he’s around 230, not 220.

25 pounds is a pretty huge cut. If he does make it, he’s going to gas like crazy. I just don’t think that is fair to Ricco, particularly since he seems to be trying to earn his way back into the UFC. Taking a loss under shitty circumstances drops him back down the ladder.

Personally, I hope he declines, but Ricco is a fighter at heart. He’ll take the fight.

by Steve4192 on Jul 9, 2010 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

He'll take the fight

He’s been fighting non-stop for the past couple of years. He’s a great comeback story. But yeah, that big of cut that soon is not going to help his chances against a guy who is always in top condition.
I admire the ferocity and dedication of Ricco fighting his way through the minor leagues to get back to the big shows, and I hope this match doesn’t derail him…

by Dootch on Jul 9, 2010 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Would be an interesting fight if it happened under normal conditions but making Ricco take on a new opponent on 1 day notice and have to cut that much weight sounds unreasonable.

Sucks if we don’t get to see Mousasi though, hopefully they can do what ufc usually does and get them to fight at a catchweight of whatever O’Brien can manage to get down to.

Goddamnit

I was hopeing to see JOB/Gegard!
If Ricco cuts 25 pounds in one day it will effect his cardio. Shit! :(

Poor Gegard.

If Ricco has any gas in the tank after the cut, he’s going give Mousasi all he can handle. He needs some of that Fedor treatment.
