Late Night Fights: Tatsuya Kawajiri in Shooto
A few people requested I bring this feature back and I'm plenty happy to do it. I probably won't make it a nightly thing like I was trying to do in the past, but when I decide to do it I'll share some great fights or fighters with you. Tonight we have both as we take a look at some of Tatsuya Kawajiri's Shooto bouts as we get ready for "Crusher" to meet Shinya Aoki at DREAM.15.
First up is Kawajiri's rematch with Takumi Nakayama. The first time they met both men were making their professional debut and Nakayama was able to secure a first round rear naked choke for the victory. Kawajiri would then draw with Yohei Suzuki before rattling off seven consecutive wins. He lost a decision to Vitor Ribeiro at Shooto's 2002 year end show and off the loss took a rematch with Nakayama. Nakayama had compiled an 8-0-2 record before going 1-3-1 with losses to Macio Barbosa, Vitor Ribeiro and Joachim Hansen. He had hung in with Hansen and managed a draw against Rumina Sato so he was no pushover heading into the rematch.
Next up is Kawajiri's 2004 bout with fellow Japanese superstar Caol Uno. Tatsuya was at a point where he was riding a 3 fight win stream. Uno, meanwhile, was coming off his 7 fight UFC stint where he went 3-3-1. Here's the video:
After the jump I'm going to make a small departure from MMA and bring a classic boxing match to you.
I think it'll be a fun departure if I sneak in some classic boxing on these just because they're posts that are meant to be fun and introduce you to fights and fighters you may not be familiar with.
In that spirit I bring you one of the classic bouts of the 1950's where Carmen Basilio took on Tony DeMarco. It's a clipped fight but still a lot of fun.

Thank you Brent.
Seriously, this serious was pure gold, and it’s gone great with my dinner. If this was a weekly series, that’d be amazing, anything to spread around some good fights, regardless of promotion, nationality, or era.
It’s a breath of fresh air.

Nice find!
I love Shooto. Some DEEP and Pancrase fights would be great in a future post.
Lemonade was a popular drink, and it still is. I get more stunts and props than Bruce Willis- Guru
yeah..there will be some
Just figured Kawajiri deserved some love

These are great as a middle-of-the-week pick-me-up.
A good older fight for us to enjoy during the drudgery that exists between weekends.
Also, thanks for the boxing fight. I’m not a huge fan, but I keep trying to understand it. I watched Facing Ali this weekend and was blown away.

If you haven't watched it already...
Go and watch The Thrilla in Manilla, the documentary behind the famous fight. I don’t know that much about boxing but I loved every second of it. It is more from Joe Frazer’s perspective and everything that went down on that night

Meh. Ali looked like shit, absorbing all that punishment. If Foreman hadn’t have gassed, he’d have won.

Great work Brent
These really helped in giving me some backstory to Kawajiri, now I’m getting excited for him to face Aoki. Thank you for posting these

Seriously Brent
Thank you for bringing this back. It was one of my favorite BE features, despite it’s brief appearance.

Thanks so much for the article Brent.
Not just because I’m a huge CRUSHER fan but also giving others the opportunity to appreciate Shooto and older organizations in general.

Good stuff
Glad to see these back again
Deputy Travis Junior: I don't think there was a real reason for Jones to hit Garcia, cause Garcia's a man who's already down. Garcia ain't got friends, he lives in a little shitty apartment, he don't have no family that I know of. He ain't got no taste. He's racist, he's a sexist, he's a lying bigot horse's ass. I think, you know, hitting him is just throwing shit in front of a shit pile that's already got too much shit in it.
I love watching Kawajiri fight.
He simply brings it.
