Yoshizo Machida Says Lyoto Machida Should Retire
"I already said that he better not fight anymore, but I didn’t say it to him. I have expressed this desire just to my wife and his brothers. He doesn’t want [to retire] and says he still has many challenges. According to him 35 is a good age to stop. I think that up to 35 is still possible but after that it starts getting tricky."HT: sherdog.com

I agree
The way Lyoto lost the battle was like a swordman getting his head cut off. Lyoto should retire for his own and (us). So we can see Anderson Silva reign supreme in 205 division. Lyoto wanting to challenge Lesnar a while back showed me that he was not mentally ready.

Wouldn’t that mean that every decisive loss should lead to the loser retiring?

Wow, Yoshizo Machida is a troll.
When Lyoto was winning, he was the best fighter ever. One loss and he should retire.
Lame!
did you guys even watch the video?
the guy asked him if Lyoto should stop fighting, he replied that he always felt that he should have retired (long before the loss), Lyoto on a previous interview also said that his father didn’t like him making the move into MMA, this is something he always felt about Lyoto fighting MMA, it has nothing to do with the loss.

Has there been any news about Shogun's knee?
Something in TATAME or other Brazilian based media that American MMA sites might have missed?

tell you the truth I only visit BE and Mania right now
US MMA sites usually get the news faster than Brazilian websites, Brazilian websites will have more interviews though.

thanks for the vid
it looks less serious than the previous knee injuries but you still gotta wonder… I just hope he can string together a couple of dominant wins and retire on top of P4P before he loses a leg

Well if he keeps fighting and gets one more loss, his ratio on wins to losses will go down tremendously. His mistiique is gone that’s for sure, but I think he will continue to do well. Who knows how he can come back after such a loss.

Title seems a bit misleading
He doesn’t really say Lyoto should retire. On the contrary, he says the following:
“As a parent, I think he just realized his dream that was to be the world champion and it would be good for him to stop. On the other hand, after being defeated, it becomes more challenging and therefore he wants to prove even more.”
So it sounds more like an illustration of the dichotomy that exists in a parent/coach – as a parent, he doesn’t like to see his son Lyoto struggle and fail. On the other hand, in the spirit of competition, he’d like to see the fighter Lyoto overcome the challenges of losing to become a better fighter and person.

No Dad wants to see their son get KTFO
There aren’t many high profile MMA father/coaches, but Frank Mir’s dad looked distraught right before the stoppage vs. Lesnar. On the lead up to 116, they replayed the fight, and you can see him outside the cage looking for a towel to throw in.
Funny because right before Lesnar puts the beats on him
He said to Brock “You aint got nothing, you aint got nothing.”
Where did you see that footage? I’d love to see it and laugh. And you get a point taken away for throwing in the towel. This ain’t Japan.
Cause there's only one, and that's me
You understand? for all that fighting, you understand
That sucka think he good, that sucka think he can whoop me
And i know he can't whoop me, Ay boy, the n**** whole style is chump

Well it was either retirement or seppuku
The former seems more logical at this stage of his career
by Holls Hoyce on Jul 7, 2010 8:44 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
+1, and rec'd for the seppuku reference...
Given that Lyoto is something of a blend of the old age and the new, his version might be to do it live…in the octagon…

I watched the video...
and all I can say is worst article headline ever.
Kid Nate must be laughing.
Train UFC ftw.
I’d like to say that I’m a spiritual person and even at my faults I’ve had to release that negative energy that gets built up. I think he’s referring to the fact that this loss effected him so much and brought him down and that his energy may be low. Ultimately that effects the self.
In lay man’s terms, he thinks Lyoto is spiritually broken. I really think he can recover from that though and be humble.
It would be a shame if Machida were to retire now, especially when he has so much more to give to the community.

he doesn't seem very clear in portuguese either :p
big accent, think of mr miagi, but the translations were ok I think

i am in no way, shape or form a machida fan
but saying that he should retire is kinda dumb.. i understand him wanting to protect his son but he could easily get the title back and wreck people.
Watch the entire video before you start calling comments dumb.

Looks like Daddy Machida is trying to add some mystique...
after his boy lost. I’m pretty sure after you’ve told the entire family those feelings about retirement and now the entire world, Lyoto has heard by now. Nice play, kinda.

Yoshizo Machida is like most masters in Martial Arts
They never have approved of MMA. Because they always value the discipline, spiritual and artistic aspect 1st, and the long held belief that Martial Art is intended for purely defensive physical use, and never to intentionally inflict pain or harm to an attacker. I think this comes through in this interview and he is treading lightly on the hard line traditionalist stance because Lyoto is involved in MMA.
Yall missed the point
I don’t think he’s saying that Machida should really retire as much as he’s trying to say that his son should be happy with his accomplishments. No real father, especially the Elder Machida, would really admit that he gives up on his son or doesn’t believe in him. What he’s talking about is Lyoto’s struggle to deal with defeat. It’s something that every fighter must deal with, and, as a father, Yoshizo probably knows his son’s tendancies when dealing with his own failures. Defeat in the Japanese culture can be worse than death. That’s a tremendous amount of pressure. May be this is just an indication of Lyoto’s frame of mind when confronted with it. He may walk away. But who knows? Maybe this is just another instance where the old man is saying, “This is what I think, but prove me wrong.” Let’s hope it’s the latter.

I agree with his dad: it was the pressure that made him lose.
The pressure Shogun’s fist applied to his head.
Don't believe a word I say, I don't train BJJ.

Machida has a two-fold problem
Dealing with and getting past the loss for starters, but the simple fact that the vast majority of upper-tier LHWs are, I don’t want to say scared, but are unwilling to face him. Of course, it is with good reason.
Machida will have a difficult time overcoming Rua, but the rest of the top LHWs will continue to duck him.
Neither Rampage nor Rashad want him, the only ones I think who might be willing are the young, unbeaten up-and-comers like Jon Jones or Bader.
Personally, I would like to see Little Nog – Machida next…
