Lyoto-machida-ufc-light-heavyweight-champion

Lyoto Machida is ready to step back into the Octagon and has a few potential opponents in mind, as his manager, Ed Soares, tells MMA Weekly:

"He's out here training, we're ready to go right now," said Soares. "He's ready to fight whoever, he wants to fight the best too."

A few different names have been mentioned as possible opponents, including Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Forrest Griffin, while there are others that intrigue the former champion as well.

One name that popped up was former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin, who just knocked out Chuck Liddell in June, and could be looking for a big fight at 205 pounds. Franklin and Machida actually fought in 2003 in Japan in what was Machida's third professional fight.

"That could be a big fight," Soares said about a fight with Franklin. "At the end of the day that's the first guy who gave Rich Franklin his first loss, maybe Rich Franklin would like to avenge that. That could be a good fight."

"You know what I think would be interesting is how about a Vitor Belfort?" said Soares. "Vitor Belfort/Lyoto Machida? I think Vitor now will get another fight before he fights Anderson Silva. Put it this way, anything can happen, you never know."

Vitor doesn't want to fight at 205 any more

Plus the UFC won’t risk ruining Vitor’s momentum and a marketable MW title fight with Silva.

I think its interesting that Soares would put Vitor’s name out there to fight Lyoto. I wonder if there is a little trepidation within Black House about Anderson fighting Vitor.

How did I end up on this bandwagon and why does everything say property of Chael Sonnen?

by Day Man on Jul 6, 2010 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe Anderson wants to move up to 205 after Sonnen. Lyoto beating Vitor would eliminate (derail) a contender a 185, giving AS time to have big fight in higher weight class.

I'm pretty sure there is.

I’m convinced that Vitor Belfort is the guy to beat Anderson Silva. They want to have Vitor fight Machida so he’ll hopefully lose and then won’t get a shot at Anderson. Soares isn’t fooling anybody.

Chael Sonnen?

I give him a 20% chance, but it would be hilarious if he wins. Three fanboy head exploding moments in about 45 days.

There is no way in hell Chael Sonnen beats Anderson Silva.

I would bet everything I own on it. Seriously, that guy fooled the world.

I remember people saying this about Matt Serra and Fabricio Werdum….

can’t remember how it turned out, though.

Ah, yes.

The usage of the two biggest upsets in MMA history. 2 out of a fucktillion fights. Love how that works.

That's exactly what we need

for Vitor Belfort to fight at 205. Then if he wins he will still have 0 wins in the UFC at the division he wants to fight for the championship(185).

Honestly though, the scary thing is aside from Shogun I dont think anyone can beat Machida at 205. I maybe wrong but every match up they listed the only thing I could think of is Machida dominating the fight.

by bigdmmafan on Jul 6, 2010 4:36 PM EDT reply actions

I actually think Rashad, provided he sticks to the gameplan, has the best chance outside of Shogun

I don’t think so. I think Rashad would do the stanky leg and get KTFO in round 2 against Machida. But that is just my predicition of course….

Rashad would destroyed shogun

Rashad aint “destroying” sh*t

by SNATCHFACE on Jul 6, 2010 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Man I would so want Rashad to destroy and KTFO Shogun, but realistically it would be a hugathon. Rashad shoots and takes Shogun down, and Shogun finds his way back up and Rashad repeats and prays he doesn’t run into a knee or an uppercut.

little boop on the chin and rashad is dizzy

rashad would be in deep trouble against shogun’s aggressive style

Jones would destroy either Rampage or Griffin, with ease.

The problem is, like Thiago Silva, neither guy would ever take that fight – they both know they would have zero chance.

by BigDNotDallas on Jul 7, 2010 12:43 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

with ease? really?

jones is entertaining and all, but he hasn’t really fought anyone at the caliber of those two guys that you say he would own…

At USC we're not snobs, we're just better than you.

by TrojanCBB on Jul 7, 2010 1:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Most certainly

Rampage knows this to be true, he has already publicly said he won’t fight Jones. Rampage is already, at best, a fringe top-10 fighter, and destined for glorified gatekeeper status within the next year…

Griffin would duck this fight as well – it has no upside for him as he has absolutely nothing to offer Jones.

It has been reported that he already dominates Rashad when they have trained together.

Honestly, the only top UFC LHWs I could see willing to fight Jones after the Maty fight are Shogun, Machida and Anderson…and of those, I think he would have the most trouble with Machida due to his elite TDD and near-elite clinch work…

by BigDNotDallas on Jul 7, 2010 3:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully he’ll get a big fight in the fall if he handles Vladdy. With Shogun out, the division is muddied and is going to need some big fights to sort itself out. I’m not saying to give a fight with Machida, but I think Jon’s proven he can handle anyone. Another convincing win, and they’ve got to stop slow playing him.

by Kwisatz Haderach on Jul 7, 2010 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

agree

Machida is the clear #2 w/a drop off in class after that. Bones Jones has the potential, but he’s still a few fights of the caliber/likes of Machida. Rampage has already said he doesn’t want to fight him, so my guess would be Franklin.

by SNATCHFACE on Jul 6, 2010 4:45 PM EDT reply actions

"maybe rich franklin would like to avenge that"

way to throw out a softball for Lyoto… why not just talk about how Thiago Silva would like to avenge his first loss too Ed.

by TrojanCBB on Jul 6, 2010 4:46 PM EDT reply actions

I wouldn’t be overly excited to see him against Franklin. Vera should be back in the mix early fall, where if he takes on Vera, see how he can manage with leg kicks by someone of lesser threat than shogun. I think him and Rampage will make a boring fight, where as I just picture Rampage stalking him, swinging and missing and getting small counter punches.

Personally...

…that fight’s a real fave of mine. Watching Tito get completely humiliated and outclassed is a pretty good way to spend 15mins IMO. Plus the little laugh Machida does at the end of rd2 is priceless; you can see Ortiz’s big ol’ melonhead straining with fury. Classic

Vera has no business fighting Machida. Maybe Diabate or someone else for the right to keep his job.

I Think they want to put Machida against Rampage and Franklin against Forrest Griffin but with Rampage crying about not wanting to fight machida i think we might see Machida vs Griffin or Frankin and Rampage against Rogerio Nogueira.

by Ghost Face Killer on Jul 6, 2010 5:16 PM EDT reply actions

I am for any and all the above mentioned fights...

Even though the Vitor one shouldn’t and probably won’t happen.

by truck on Jul 6, 2010 5:21 PM EDT reply actions

I would like to see Machida fight;

Rich or Forrest, both are very skilled LHW’s and extremely popular with the fans. So, a fight with either would help elevate Machida’s status and marketability with fans. I think Bader is close to being ready for this kind of jump in competetion, but, he isnt as marketable as either Forrest of Ace. The final PPV numbers from Machida vs Rua 2 were a lil disappointing to Zuffa, so they need to manufacture a buzz. I really want to see Page fight Lil Nog then maybe after that fight Bader. Bader vs Page would be a compelling fight and have title contention on it. Page and Machida is a bad style match up, Quinton needs to work his way back up into title contention.

I’d like to see Machida fight, full stop. Ed Soares’ proteges have a nasty history of medical issues.

Would Machida be looking to fight Belfort at 185? If so it definitely would make things interesting.

His guy already looks good.

I thought Vitor was training Karate with Machida? Didn’t he give him a blue belt recently?

by je1ani on Jul 6, 2010 8:11 PM EDT reply actions

Nope

Vitor’s blue belt in Shotokan karate came from someone else.

by Chortles on Jul 6, 2010 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I heard Machida was open to fighting Lil Nog not sure if that is true though.

They should just do Griffin vs Machida. I don’t see a way Forest wins that though but it could set up a Evans vs Machida rematch (or Evans vs Griffin rematch if he wins)

by Tats16 on Jul 6, 2010 8:49 PM EDT reply actions

Jesus, if Lyoto fights Rich, Ace’s last 9 fights will have been:

Machida
Liddell
Belfort
Wanderlei
Hendo
Hamill
Lutter
Anderson Silva
Okami

Christ, DanaSilva, quit trying to kill this guy.
