Strikeforce: Renato "Babalu" Sobral vs. Dan Henderson in the Works

According to Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker on MMAWeekly.com Radio:
"I talked to Jordan, his manager, and they said they probably want to fight at 205 instead of 185. (They) felt that the weight cut was too much, and Dan would welcome to fight Babalu again, Gegard Mousasi, for a 205-pound contender's bout."

"I don't think you'll see Dan in the 185-pound tournament."

"I think a fight between Babalu and Dan is something we might pursue in the very near future."
The rematch could determine the number one contender for the light heavyweight title [vs. Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal].
Renato "Babalu" Sobral (36-8) vs. Dan "Hendo" Henderson (25-8)

Lose a fight in SF, and you go UP in weight and go for that belt instead.

I want Kim Winslow or Tan Dan to ref Tito Ortiz' next loss.

The level of competition in Strikeforce is so good that

a loss in Strikeforce is better than a win in the UFC

In the UFC he got an immediate LHW title shot, lost and then got an immediate MW title shot.

I understand the moving down in weight vs up issue, but its still funny to make this a SF issue and not a MMA issue.

How did I end up on this bandwagon and why does everything say property of Chael Sonnen?

Could be wrong

but weren’t both of those fights considered undying matches for the pride & ufc MW & LHW belts? If so it’s diferrent.

SF matchmaking is a mess

They hint and promise at one thing, but ultimately let the fighters make their own matches.

They would have been wise to lean on Sobral and make him take the Lawal fight considering that’s what they were hyping going in to the Robbie Lawler fight. At this point, when Coker says a win for a fighter leads to a fight with whoever, you can pretty much bank on that not happening.

It will be too freakin’ funny if Babalu makes good on his comment about dropping to middleweight to not fight Mo. On the other hand, he wants to fight Hendo, so that probably won’t happen. But I’d laugh if it did.

In addition to the "normal" Strikeforce matchmaking snafus,

Nobody in SF (or anywhere else for that matter) wants to fight Lawal, although I don’t blame them.

He is the one otherwise elite MMA wrestler that a BJJ specialist might have a chance against from the bottom, based on his suspect-at-best submission defense AND Strikeforce’s inexplicable forbidding of elbows, despite their allowance under the Unified Rules.

As an aside, does anyone have factual information (or links) as to why Strikeforce disallows their use, and have they always done so? Perhaps it was a “Fedor Rule” added to protect him…?

SF never allowed elbows on the ground

They thought it was better because it eliminates the BS stoppages where 1 fighter is winning, then gets a cut from his opponents elbow and ends up losing.

Elbows are a cheap way to win.
Unless you knock somebody out with it, but that doesn’t happen if you’re not Anderson Silva

When’s the last time this happened?

I dare you to come up with 2 examples of this happening.

by Phildo on Jul 6, 2010 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

So

who does want to fight in the tournament?

Facts don't come with points of view.

by Robert Livingston on Jul 6, 2010 9:46 AM EDT reply actions

I didn't expect to see Dan there anyways...

The suspensions of Mayhem and Diaz would slow things.

Le is out.

Hendo is out.

The ultra deep MW division is taking a hit.

It doesn’t matter Jacare wins any tournament anyways.

by truck on Jul 6, 2010 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Adding to the drama, Mr. Coker said that there’s a possibility of both a Middleweight title fight and a Middleweight tournament happening as opposed to just having the tournament crown a new champion.

http://www.fightopinion.com/2010/07/03/strikeforce-matchmaking-confusion/#more-7599

Jacare may win the tournament but that doesn’t just mean he will get the belt, this is Strikeforce after all. Maybe the winner of the tournament gets free tickets to Cung Le vs Scott Smith 3, where they will give the belt to Le?

by who me on Jul 6, 2010 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Jacare! Jacare! Jacare!

I don’t care if he gets the belt, especially since Strikeforce belts are meaningless. I just want to see him fight. He is my favorite Strikeforce fighter!

by truck on Jul 6, 2010 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

He might be lucky to not get stuck with that belt.

and the loser will get a titleshot

Are they really going to claim that babalu is fighting for a shot at mo’s belt again?

by Phildo on Jul 6, 2010 10:22 AM EDT reply actions

That just kills me, didn’t the learn the last time?

by who me on Jul 6, 2010 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

205? Pishaw. There’s a much more obvious answer.

Current Franklinweight rankings:

1. Vitor Belfort
2. Dan Henderson
3. Rich Franklin
4. Babalu
5. Wandy

I think this is a great matchup. Classic grappler versus striker bout.
