The Reason Alistair Overeem Will Not Be Fighting Ricco Rodriguez at DREAM.15

Photo

Ariel Helwani scoops it:

"After my Brett Rogers fight on May 15, I decided to take time off and do media appearances -- MMA expo in Canada, E3 expo, Strikeforce events -- and enjoy some time off with my family. I knew Dream wanted me on the show, but I didn't want to go back in training preparation. Then, they offered me a fight against Andrei Arlovski for the Dream heavyweight title. As I have said on occasions, fighting for a belt means something more, and I wanted that Dream title so much that So as a result, I agreed to lay off my media and holiday plans, and went back to training.

"During my training I found out that Andrei Arlovski was not going to be my opponent, and they changed opponents numerous times. I've heard names like Tim Sylvia and Minowa. At one point, I received notice that they had found a opponent but that the Dream heavyweight title was not on the line anymore. With all the changes and the title fight no longer a possibility, I simply had to turn down the opportunity.

"The next day, I immediately took a flight to San Jose to hype up my possible fight against the winner of Fedor Emelianenko or Fabricio Werdum. I then heard rumors that Dream had booked me in a fight against Ricco Rodriguez. I want to make it very clear that I never verbally agreed to fight him and I never signed a contract with Dream to fight him. I feel very sorry for Ricco Rodriguez's camp if they still think the fight is on, and I apologize to my fans that have bought a ticket to see me compete. I hope this statement has shed some light on the unfortunate situation."

I've long made it no secret that I'm not a fan of the way DREAM books fights and handles business but this is egregious even by their standards.

As much as it pains me to say it, the UFC with their chattel fighter mentality is much more considerate of the fighters' long-term interests than DREAM which, other than a few key stars like Aoki, Kawajiri, Kikuno, et al. treats fighters as something to be reached for at the last minute like a tool on a shelf.

It's too bad because I'm always game for an Alistair Overeem fight, even against somewhat over-matched competition and because Ricco Rodriguez may be earning his way back to more big time competition.

You can tell a Kid Nate story from a mile away...

He really hates Dana White, you’d think Dana was his stepfather.

He only whines like this

Because he’s the only BE writer who has absolutely nothing worth contributing on the news. He can write as many factually inaccurate judo chops as he wants, but when it comes to the news side of the blog (which is 95% of it) he has absolutely nothing to offer but childish ranting to try getting people to even mention his name.

In his defense

there are occasional Judo Chop articles where Kid Nate wasn’t totally familiar with the martial art being employed and had to guess at a name or version of a technique used, and the commenters helped to fill in the blanks or offer corrections. While they may be his most accurate articles and enjoyable, they could sometimes be described as factually incorrect, so they can’t be trusted implicitly. Obviously, Lucian Cerrano has chosen to address this in a malicious sort of way, though.

by rzor on Jul 6, 2010 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions

That's sort of the point of them though

He makes it VERY clear that he’s not too sure what he’s talking about and that the point of the article is to promote discussion in the comments, which they do VERY well.

The beauty of the Judo Chops is the comments section and the BE community.

Dream has a long history of jerking guys around (and they aren’t even that old yet). We do know that they announced the fight a couple of weeks before the shows date and that they are apparently still saying it’s going to happen even though Overeem has said from the start that it isn’t. So he’s lying about why he won’t fight in this last minute match up that Dream threw together or he’s actually planning on showing up for the fight? What is he not supposed to be dealing from the top of the deck here?

by who me on Jul 6, 2010 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

When and where did DREAM announce that Overeem will be fighting Rodriguez?

by jinsoku on Jul 6, 2010 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

They might not have announced it to the public, but Ken Pavia sure seems to be under the impression that the fight is going to happen.

by Steve4192 on Jul 6, 2010 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Ken Pavia is Ken Pavia but what’s being discussed is how DREAM announced the fight and isn’t saying anything that it’s off which is a total bullshit cause they didn’t announce anything in the first place.

by jinsoku on Jul 6, 2010 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree that the the ‘false advertising’ angle has no legs, but keeping a fighter and his agent in the dark until the last minute is bogus. Ken could be off working to get Ricco another fight, but unfortunately he is stuck in a holding pattern waiting on FEG to tell him whether Ricco still has a fight in DREAM or not.

Hopefully, they book Ricco against someone else, but I suspect he is just shit out of luck.

by Steve4192 on Jul 6, 2010 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s a different matter and in this case I agree with you. Though I beg to differ, it’s not FEG’s but more likely Real Entertainments fault.

by jinsoku on Jul 6, 2010 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Stop splitting hairs, Dream has confirmed the bout was agreed to. I could care less if they advertised it or not because that wasn’t my point anyway. Heck the fact that they haven’t finalized a bout that is supposed to be on a card on the tenth makes my point even better. Fighters should be given a couple of months notice for a fight not a week or two, this is typical last minute crap from Dream that consistantly bites them in the ass.

MMAFighting has reported that both Dream’s officials and Rodriguez’s camp have confirmed that the contracts have been sent out and both camps have verbally agreed to the fight.

has reported that both Dream’s officials and Rodriguez’s camp have confirmed that the contracts have been sent out and both camps have verbally agreed to the fight.
It’s far from being officialy confirmed bout. They never even said anything publicly about booking that fight. It was the mma websites which learned from Rodriguez side that the fight was being targeted who made it seemingly official. Can you differentiate both things? I repeat, no one from DREAM staff made any public announcement about the fight taking place on DREAM.15 and if you say otherwise you’re full of shit.

by jinsoku on Jul 6, 2010 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Dream’s officials and Rodriguez’s camp
DREAM representatives said this past week that they expected the bout to go forward, though they did not make an official announcement.

For goodness sake does your brain not work? I don’t give a shit if they have officially announced it or not because that had nothing at all to do with my point. Dream representatives have said it was happening and Overeem’s name is listed as being on the card on Dream’s official site(his picture is on the event poster even), it’s not like Pavia and Overeem are making this up. What kind of company waits to book a fight two weeks before the event? This crap should of been ironed out months ago, it’s not a late replacement it’s the actual fight booking booking for a event 4 days from now.

You’re not the smartest one, aren’t you?

Oh and it’s supposed to be “You’re not the smartest one, are you?”….. Perhaps if you are going to sink to calling people names you should at least try not to look like a dumbass yourself.

by who me on Jul 6, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I’m not surprised that an idiot like you can’t even understand what he said in the first place.

“We do know that they announced the fight a couple of weeks before the shows date and that they are apparently still saying it’s going to happen even though Overeem has said from the start that it isn’t.”

Announced to who? They made a press conference and said that Overeem will be fighting Ricco Rodriguez or they were asked by a couple of mma sites who heard from Ricco’s camp that they proposed him a fight about it and said they have sent the contracts and are awaiting responses? Again, you fail in logic. If not for mmajunie, mmafighting etc. you wouldn’t even know who they are talking to about facing Overeem cause they haven’t announce anything in public. Other people seem to understand, you’re obviously retarded. Now go cry about someone else’s typing mistakes, beetch.

by jinsoku on Jul 6, 2010 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

No you damn moron what you don’t seem to get is what my point was that you were replying to with all this crap. The fact that they haven’t made an official announcement here makes my point all the more apparent. What kind of company books a major fight two weeks before an event? The fact that they hadn’t finalized the damn thing at this point in time is the whole problem. A event at this level should of been booked months ago, not with them still trying to negotiate a bout agreement two weeks before the event. That is some real pathetic crap.

Dream isn’t lying about trying to put the fight together, they have been trying to book Overeem on their show (his picture is on the damn official poster for the event). This kind of last minute booking crap was the whole issue I was pointing out to start with, the fact that even now they can’t get a bout finalized for a event a few days from now makes my point all the more apparent. I don’t know why you are hung up on an official bout announcement when that never had anything to do with what I was saying to start with? I don’t know how to say it any simpler than that for your pea brain to grasp, I don’t care if it was officially announced or not, hell the fact that they still haven’t finalized a bout they are planning on having is what makes this “last minute crap”.

by who me on Jul 6, 2010 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

What other people that seem to understand are you talking about? Seriously who else has replied to this particular little cluster fuck of a discussion but you and me? Do you think this is the same discussion as you had above? Did you think I was talking about false advertising when I never mentioned that at all in what I wrote and advertising had nothing at all to do with the point I was making? Are you insulting me just because you can’t follow a basic conversation? Are you just a dick who can’t tell the difference between two different post but just likes to attack people?

As much as it pains me to say it, the UFC with their chattel fighter mentality is....

Dude, you are the biggest UFC hater out there. You make it sound like 4 month notice for a fight isn’t enough when you say that bout the UFC. Yet, if it wasn’t for the UFC, you’d just be doing your 9-5 and watching Bloodsport all damn day. Look man, I’m sure a lot of ppl have gripe with the UFC but they top dawg for a reason and they are the NUBMER one reason you even get to do this blog. UFC is the reason BE exists, sherdog, WKR, etc. Like Drake said, “Get over it…and all you hatin @$$…” well I hope you know the rest. =)
