Quote of the Day - Scott Coker: "Look at Brock Lesnar, He Made the Crossover, Why Not Batista?"

Photo

"They have the desire to fight in MMA and we’re trying to put together a deal that makes sense. Is he signed right now? No. But is he somebody we’d like to see in the cage in the future fighting for Strikeforce? It’s a possibility."

"Just like we did with Herschel (Walker), we’d have to put him into a gym. It doesn’t matter what gym, as long as it’s a reputable mixed martial arts academy. He has to go in there and train because if he didn’t, we’d probably have a short relationship."

"[A fight against Bobby Lashley] That would just be a fun fight to watch"

"We’re not the guys that are putting all the circus fights on. but in all fairness, look at Brock Lesnar. He made the crossover. Why not Batista?"

...

"I think Kimbo’s had his run, so to speak. He’s kind of had his time in the MMA business whereas Batista hasn’t and Herschel hasn’t. We already know how Kimbo will do, so, to me, there’s a little curiosity factor (with Batista)."

--Scott Coker, talking to Sherdog about his interest in signing former WWE superstar, Dave Batista.

in the tiny tiny chance that he becomes successful against a few of SF's bums.

it could be a bigger possibility for him to ignite more interest in MMA here in the country, therefore increasing the chance of the UFC coming here…

(not that this country lacks interest, cause people here love MMA more than most of the foreign countries the UFC is trying to break in to, but every little bit helps haha.)

That's exactly it.

As kids and then teenagers most of this generation loved wrestling…then it got old and we needed something more like an actual sport. After finding out that wrestling was fake we always wondered what would happen in a real fight. TUF came along in 2005, beautifully programmed to come on right after the WWE flagship program, RAW, and that’s where we got our answer.

Yup, I grew up during WWF’s attitude era and then I converted to MMA as i get older and wrestling got all “kid friendly” and I started to view it as getting cornier and cornier. It’s probably why I root for Lesnar so much. When I was young, I was in love with wrestling because I thought it was “real” and there were submissions and slams and cages as well as the typical striking. So, when I found MMA and subsequently found out that it was a “real sport”…I was hooked.

They are trying really hard to replicate the UFC.

They have incorporated a lot of submission moves into pro wrestling. It’s kind of fucked up actually. Taker was using the gogoplata as a finisher for a while.
The no blood rule is because they are PG-13 now. They quit the whole Attitude Era thing and are now totally marketing to kids because their biggest star, John Cena, is hugely over with the young kids these days.

I literally only watch to see whatever those guys are doing, once they’ve done their thing I couldn’t care less. It seems as though they’re setting them up to job out to Cena, and if that happens I’m gonna let out a big “Ugh” and proceed to turn.

Being such a huge fan growing up it’s just sad to see the company itself in such a stagnant state, one that they pretty much intentionally place themselves in. They claim to market to kids, but back in the attitude era when all kinds of adult shit was popping off everyone on the playground was watching it regardless. And TNA, well they’re pretty much the pro wrestling equivalent of Strikeforce.

And say what you will about Dana, I think one of the shrewdest business men out their is Vince McMahon. That dude pretty much screwed one of his biggest stars in Brett Hart and then unapologetically profited off of it for over a decade.

If you liked Sting coming down from the rafters ten years ago in WCW, then you’d love middle-aged balding Sting coming down from the rafters currently in TNA. Seriously, TNA has pretty much turned itself into the WCW graveyard with Sting, X-Pac (fired again), Scott Hall (fired again), Scott Steiner, Booker T, Kevin Nash, Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, and Vince Russo on top just for fun.

TNA sucks.

They are pushing ridiculously hard to bring in Paul Heyman to save them. Cagside Seats has been talking a lot about it lately. Heyman wants complete control, basically like Dana White, but TNA is reluctant to give it to him.

Give up control to Paul Heyman

I say they might as well, it’s not like whatever the hell it is they’re supposed to be doing with Hogan and Bischoff is working. Heyman is like one of the last guys to leave WWE that was still well competent afterwards.

Well

they could take a chance and finally gain the success that they’ve been so desperate to achieve for like closing in on a decade, or they can stay barely filling up the same studio in Orlando or wherever it is that they film. I honestly think Paul might be the guy to do it if he gets the chance.

I don't know

he was given quite a bit of leash from Vince when they tried to remake ECW and he totally hung himself with it. Granted, he had a lot less to work with, but still it has to be taken into account.
What I think would be great in bringing him in is the elevation of younger stars. Guys like Sting and Jarrett would finally get phased out and young guys would get pushed to the top. This is essential to the growth of the business and something Vince almost never does. Who on the WWE roster right now is deserving of a big push? Quite a few guys but they never get it.

Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.

Yeah, I doubt it will ever reach the same levels it was at.

They say that wrestling is a business that runs in cycles so maybe it can get to the top again but I don’t know. They are marketing to kids now so they can keep them around for later. The issue though is that John Cena is not a great top babyface. The reason he has been there for so long is that he sells so much merchandise. Which really sucks cause I think they could make some good money off of a heel turn for him.

Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.

by Geno Mrosko on Jul 6, 2010 3:25 AM EDT up reply actions

One of the most interesting things they could do at this point is turn Cena heel, but they ain’t gonna risk their investment like that. I remember how long Austin was a face, not the cleanest face but still a face, before they finally turned him. I finally pinned down that my biggest problem with Cena is that he panders to the crowd. You can just tell that he desperately wants you to cheer for him with all the corny stuff he says and he plays up to their PG mindset to perfection.

Can I just say that this discussion has been just terrific, it’s like I finally have a place to ramble on about pro wrestling without having to feel the shame of signing up for a wrestling message board.

Oh yeah, and I could give to nuggets about Batista crushing turning over cans.

Coker is digging a big hole

The guy says he doesn’t want to compete with the UFC yet he is constantly referencing the UFC in his interviews lately. Making retarded comparisons doesn’t seem to be smart business.

If CBS gives them another show, Dana can just counter with UFC 116 on Spike. How embarassing would it be for CBS to lose out to a repeat on cable vs their live show? Maybe it wouldn’t be beat but I could see it being close. That’s a failure.

The only bareable thing I’ve been able to watch Nic Cage in was Leaving Las Vegas (I admit it I teared up a little at the end), and Raising Arizona cause he was the least Nicolas Cagey in those. I could also grit through Con Air and Face/Off but that’s more for the cheesy enjoyement of both.

It would add a good deal believe it or not. The only problem is that CBS wouldn’t even promote it so it would be a moot point. One thing I learned from wrestling is that the hardcore fans will always be there. Numbers may decline some but they are always there. They are in business to bring in casual fans and make them hardcore fans. That is who you cater to. Not the hardcore fans. Same thing with MMA.

All jokes aside...

Brock did some extremely impressive stuff in the WWF.

I saw him (in person) almost break his neck doing a backflip off the top rope at the “No Mercy PPV” in 2002. It was a “Hell in a Cell” match against the Undertaker.

I was 16 and hadnt watched wrestling in a few years, but Im from Arkansas and WWF PPV’s had never come here before… just Raw/SD and mostly house shows.

For the record, it was fucking awesome!

batista was trained under the same wrestling lineage that the rock was trained under
just a lil factoid there

by Johnathan Willis on Jul 6, 2010 7:31 AM EDT up reply actions

“We’re not the guys that are putting all the circus fights on. but in all fairness, look at Brock Lesnar. He made the crossover. Why not Batista?”

Because Brock had a background in legitimate competition before he was a pro-wrestler. Batista is also older(about 40, 41 right now), and has a history of muscle injuries from performing in the WWE.

by Hardcase on Jul 6, 2010 7:20 AM EDT reply actions

saku

sakuraba came into mixed martial arts with the same base that batista has.
saku only had training in catch wrestling
batista has been trained in catch wrestling under the maivia lineage which is a very respectable lineage and he also has been trained in whatever the fillapino martial art is.

that being said
batista is forty years old and doesn’t have the athleticism or intellect that sakuraba had
my point is only
people have discounted the chances of pro wrestlers in mixed martial arts dating back to the very beginning of the sport and time and time again people have been proven wrong.
mixed martial arts and pro wrestling are kissing cousins and as long as both are around
there will be crossovers
some more successful than others

by Johnathan Willis on Jul 6, 2010 7:28 AM EDT reply actions

wrestling and MMA may be kissing cousins however....

Dave Batista doesn’t have the same martial arts tools that Brock, or for even that matter Bobby Lashley has.

They both have a strong wrestling background from college. Hell, even Hershal Walker has a background as a black belt in TDK.

I don’t know coming so late in the game if Dave has the time to learn what he needs to learn to survive in the cage.

Hell, I’d take Kimbo over Batista for that matter if it came down to who’d win in a match. At least with Kimbo he legitimately knows how to fight.

I’m not trying to come across as someone that hates Pro-Wrestling… Far from it. Although not so much these days, but I was a huge wrestling fan from way back when.

But I was more of a fan from the athleticism, in the sport more so then these jacked up body builders that seem to dominate the pro-wrestling landscape these days.

I was fans of Bret Hart (the best), Ultimo Dragon, Chris Beniot, Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio Jr, etc. Wrestlers who had a background in college, grappling or lucha libre.

Not these jacked up idiots that look like they shoot steroids in their butt, five times a week.

If Dave had that background like a Brock or a Lashley, then I’d be all for it, but I MMA is quite a different animal then wrestling is these days. I don’t think he’d get very far in this business

If Coker really wanted to make Strikeforce grow, then he needs to litter his organization with top fighters, like Hector Lumbard, Eddie Alverez, Kid Yammamotto, Hornbuckle, etc.

Fighters that can put on exciting bouts that will eventually promote themselves.

Not name brands that are new to the sport. Let the fighters, worth speak for themselves. Then and only then, will Strikeforce grow….

by devious1 on Jul 6, 2010 10:44 AM EDT reply actions

I’m half-tempted to write a fanpost about it, but StrikeForce does not have many options right now if they want to compete at a national level. They need to keep what credible fighters they have, but StrikeForce cannot hope to even come close the UFC when it comes to credibility in the divisions that they both promote. One thing that they can do that the UFC shies away from, in addition to promotion women’s fights, is doing freakshow matches.

There’s been a long history showing that pro-wrestling fans will follow pro-wrestling stars to MMA. Does anyone seriously think Batista will ever be a force at HW, or even an interesting prospect like Lashley? Not really. Would I wanna see what he can do (or what can be done to him) in a real fight? When it comes down to it, StrikeForce is a business. They need people to watch and buy tickets to survive. So yeah, why not? Sandwiching legit top-flight matches in-between freakshow fights certainly worked for Pride. Just as long as the freakshows aren’t fighting the legit fighters, I think it’s fine.
