Strikeforce, Scott Coker on-record saying former WWE star Batista signing a possibility
From Sherdog:
"They have the desire to fight in MMA and we’re trying to put together a deal that makes sense," Coker told the Sherdog Radio Network’s "Beatdown" show last week. "Is he signed right now? No. But is he somebody we’d like to see in the cage in the future fighting for Strikeforce? It’s a possibility."
The 41-year-old Batista, who was a repeated WWE champion during his eight-year tenure with the pro wrestling outlet, has no reported prior combat sports experience thus far, though Coker has been told that Batista has already hired a striking coach and a ground instructor to train with.
We’re not the guys that are putting all the circus fights on," said Coker, "but in all fairness, look at Brock Lesnar. He made the crossover. Why not Batista?"
Let me say that I read this and it just proves my theory more and more. I know where Strikeforce is headed and it ain't a good place. I've seen this path before. I'll expand more into it later this week. This is a nonsensical move here. And I'll tell you why:
Yes, that is Booker "Booker T" Huffman who, fresh off of knee surgery, got into a legit backstage altercation with Batista and beat him up.
Besides the fact that he can't handle himself in an actual fight against a handicapped man, Batista has a damned belly button tattoo. No seriously, he does. And Batista has NO previous combat sports experience. Coker crazily compares him to Lesnar, but Lesnar was an NCAA champion. Even Lashley had wrestled in the Army. They have previous experience. Batista has none. In the article, Coker makes a snide comment about the UFC making freak show fights, but the difference is, James Toney is a boxer. Boxing is a Martial Art. Pro wrestling is NOT a martial art. Apparently Scott Coker doesn't know the difference. He envokes the name of Herschel Walker. Walker too has a legit Tae kwon do background. Batista uses powerbombs (and not the Rampage kind either).
Not to mention Batista is 45 years old. And is juiced to the gills. And gets injured just by walking down the ramp. No really. Lesnar may or may not have used, but he was the same size throughout his WWF career while Batista came in and put 30 more pounds on his already massive frame. Ever since debuting back in the fall of 2002, he's missed around 2 years in injury. He's fragile and I scoff to think that he would pass a physical, but I've been told those are jokes.
Scott Coker seems to think this is a good idea because "the UFC does it". There's another company out there that bases it's business model on how it's bigger competitor does things. And right now, it's in dire straights. We need Strikeforce to be healthy as a viable alternative to the UFC for both competition sake and for better salaries for fighters. Coker's past few months' worth of decisions have been destructive to the long term viabiity of the company.

Right now, thats all its about.
As far a Coker is concerned, throw Batista vs. Greg nagy on a PPV, along with Overeem, Henderson and Diaz…. He has a HUGE PPV, Even if Batista has NEVER fought or trained or whatever..
I can’t say i agree with it, but at the same time, from a business p.o.v., I don’t really blame him
Give him to Bobby Lashley. It will help build Lashley’s name and bring in huge ratings. I don’t mind strikeforce doing freakshow fights as long as they are entertaining and not overdone.
Btw is he 41 or 45?
41

If they feed him to Lashley i suppose some people will be interested
I can’t see people stoked to watch him fight Nagy though.
If you had any remaining respect for scott coker, please let it go now. It won’t be needed.

Booker grew up right around the corner from where I grew up, I see him a lot
As for the fight, that was back around Summerslam 2006.

The first person to compare this to Brock Lesnar gets a dick punch.

Sweet Christ
I missed that. Delusional attempts to piggy-back on what happened last Saturday (and claim that you called Werdum over Fedor) just make me feel better about my constant naysaying of what Coker’s been doing over the last 12 months.

since coker took one for the team and is going to get the dick punch, might as well go all out.
According to my internet detective guidebook (wikipedia) Brock won the WWE championship 3 times, while batista has 6 (since there are 2 belts for some reason). I think it’s clear that Batista will be twice as good as Brock.
Coker, one step ahead of dana, again.

I too have no interest in seeing Batista fight, but if you really hold the sentiment that
We need Strikeforce to be healthy as a viable alternative to the UFC for both competition sake and for better salaries for fighters. Then booking less than stellar talent that draws eyeballs might be just what they have to do. They are currently fighting an uphill battle to merely get noticed, let alone compete in any meaningful way with the UFC, so trying to deliver top fighters in great fights, as much as that is what I want to see, is not going to do it. If that was true the Nashville show with 5 top 10 fighters would have done gangbusters. The reality is that the majority of fans are casual observers who need a hook to get them to watch. The UFC has their brand, Dana White, and the few recognizable athletes in the sport. Strikeforce has none of that. Strikeforce’s only chance may be to book a Batista, a Walker, or a Kimbo to get the public interest they need. If by doing that they can give us meaningful fights, I might give them a pass. But if they turn into celebrity mma, no matter how lucrative it may prove, I’ll be turning the channel. It is going to be a very fine line that they have to walk.
It doesn't work
I’ll explain it further when I get around to writing it but Strikeforce is going down the same path TNA is.

They need eyeballs but they need them more than just once, Batista at most gets them viewers once or twice and then he becomes a complete joke. That’s if he can even fight twice without going down to injury yet again. Heck Batista wasn’t even that good of a professional wrestler and his background was in body building, he’s not going to be the star Strikeforce needs. Turning the organization into celebrity MMA now doesn’t help them survive in the future.
They could book Danny Bonaduce and pop a quick rating but would that actually build their brand or help them get future ratings? Batista would be similar to that but Bonaduce has better combat sports credentials.
The problem is that they need to hit a home run to get over with the casual fans, but I don’t know if batista and walker are the people that is going to do that.
Right now they can survive and they were very successful before by catering towards the hardcore fans and the zuffa haters. Zuffa can get away with alienating them because they can make money from other people, SF hasn’t shown the ability to do that. And if they swing and miss, they could lose the hardcore fans which will make it hard to go back to where they were a year ago, or even where they are now.
