It seems like that guy interviewing isn’t that fluent with the common phrases in MMA and what-not, but still managed to have a good interview without saying anything ridiculous. If Brock had some social skills he could probably gain some more attention on these Sportscenter segments… He just seems so uneasy speaking publicly.

I gotta give Brock some ....

…. credit here , he seems to have finally learned how to be humble , showed a ton of heart and was in general not acting like a WWE wrestler . He now is acting like a true champion and from his speaking during the interview he really seems greatful to have an MMA career now .He also seems to respect his fellow fighter more now ( unlike the second Mir fight ) . Maybe that time training with Randy really did help him .

So many opinions about the fight on Sat. I really dont know what to say. I have mixed feelings. On one hand I give MAJOR props to Brock for staying in it and coming back to win, and via Sub which is insane. On the other I felt like he was exposed and Carwin beat himself. Do I feel Brock is “The baddest man on the planet”? I don’t know how you could call someone that after running and cowering/turtling up. Brock’s standup is atrocious. The people who keep saying he’s gonna beat everyone in his path are gonna have a rude awakening. You cant stay champ a long time being one dimensional. If Brocks standup would have looked better Sat night I’d probably be on that bandwagon with everyone. Right now, I cant join you.

Will Brock beat Cain? If he can get the takedown right away, like within the 1st 30secs of the fight, yeah I think so. If Cain stuffs Brocks takedowns its gonna be a long night for him.

So what about Cigano? Uh yeah, I think Brock would lose his belt quick.

lol cigano man? seriously? a 300 lb wrestler vs. a 240 lb brazillian? it’d be brocks easiest title defense next to mir.

by kanodogg on Jul 5, 2010 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

What the hell does JDS being Brazillian have to do with anything?

There is the possibility that size doesn’t automatically guarantee you a win, if that was the case Marius Padzuzu…buff n*gga would be tearing down people’s houses left and right. And even with all of his size, Brock has never really looked like he wasall that dominating of a wrestler.

As a HS wrestling coach who watched some of his college matches

Brock was a pretty damn good college wrestler.

I'm talking MMA centric wrestling though.

and you’re a HS wrestling coach, as if I already didn’t have enough reasons to despise you. ;)

He came incredibly close

to being 107-4 and a 2 time National Champion. He was definitely a very good wrestler.

baddest man

I can see how he feels he’s “baddest man on the planet”. He’s the undisputed champion of the heavyweight division in the top caliber mma promotion on the planet. I don’t think any of the other UFC champs would have much of a shot against him as a HW, and I don’t think (given recent events) that any HW outside the promotion would be favored against him. In an absolute sense, he can claim baddest man on the planet.

In a p4p sense, no, I don’t think so, but he didn’t say that. He also didn’t say he’s invincible, but until Cain or JDS take the belt from him, they’re not badder (worse?). :)

if brock beats cain...

… will he have the longest title reign in ufc heavyweight history? seems like most of the previous champs only defended once or twice at most.

by woooburn on Jul 5, 2010 1:53 PM EDT reply actions

So Brock is at 2 title defenses right? Or does the interim belt bullshit screw that up?

Nope.

If Brock could lose the belt, it was a defense. Brock has 2 title defenses.

Technically, it’s two title unifications (which is even better), but I digress.

Thank you.

We all know Carwin hits the hardest in the division, so all these “he got exposed” comments are rubbish. Brock got hit hard and panicked a little, that’s it. I can tell you from experience that if you are fighting someone and take their best shot and don’t go out, it gives you a lot more confidence for the rest of the fight. The thing that worries me about Brock Vs Cain is Brock doesn’t like getting kicked. When he first got in the fight game and was training here at Miletich he would get pissed if people kicked him. Cain has quick hard kicks and that could be trouble for the champ if he can’t get the take down. Maybe now that he has been training for awhile he is used to the kicks, we will find out.

if he can't get the takedown?

or the clinch? or dominate physically in every aspect? a guy that landed the quantity of shots that cain did on rothwell and kongo isn’t about to lay brock out. and if kongo even knew how to sprawl maybe we wouldn’t even be having a conversation with cains’ name in it. even so, we are, and i expect cain to be an easier fight than JDS.

rematch + thoughts

First I think Carwin deserves a rematch, straight up. Coming into this fight his plan was clearly to knock Brock out in the first round. When that didn’t happen and he had exhausted himself, he was utterly lost in the ground game, not even having the energy to get into a full guard. I think with a rematch, Carwin would condition himself and prepare for a longer bout. Regardless though, I still feel like he should have won this fight. Kudos to Brock for hanging in there (barely), but I definitely want to see them go at it again.

by QuickJack on Jul 5, 2010 4:20 PM EDT reply actions

honestly

though i am no fan i feel shane has a better chance than either Cain, JDS or Roy. A rematch could be sick when both are more prepared (not to say they weren’t, but Brock had his layoff and Shane’s muscles clearly fatigued) and have each gotten their taste of each other once.

by silent.bisonte33 on Jul 5, 2010 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Carwin needs to lose like 30lbs… With his frame he needs to be around 250-255 at most – he’ll still have punching power but he needs to get into optimal cardio shape because the cats out of the bag.

by mmalogic on Jul 5, 2010 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Carwin is the best bet to beat Brock

Clearly, Carwin has the best chance of all the crop of heavies to beat Brock. Like you said, he needs better conditioning and not to fall into the rope-a-dope i.e. he needs to fight smarter. Having said that, by the time his rematch comes around, I expect Brock’s strike defense to be significantly improved, and I think he’ll win much easier.

I don't get it

It’s not like he lost by close decision. He got subbed in the second. UFC has been doing a lot of rematches lately but they’ve been fights that were close or questionable the first time. BJ had been dominating the LW division and somewhat earned his rematch by being the champ. Shogun Machida 2 was needed. Brock and Carwin will most likely meet again, an immediate rematch isn’t needed here.

by seanerk88 on Jul 6, 2010 2:15 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

a 250 Carwin

sounds good. but i wonder if that much more of a weight cut would help that cardio? maybe over the course of a couple fights he can slowly drop.

or donate his forearms to science.

by silent.bisonte33 on Jul 5, 2010 4:43 PM EDT reply actions

I don't think Shane is it

Brock was scared to get hit. He’d never been hit and I’m sure they don’t hit him in training. He got hit..a bunch and stood tall. His chin is tested. He won’t be scared next time.

Lesnar made the case for best HW at the moment

With this submission win over Carwin, there is no doubt that right now he is the best HW in the world. IMO, he won’t be best HW of all time until he beats Cain, JDS (that is if JDS demolishes Roy), and at least another highly skilled contender. Then he can actually start competing against Fedor in terms of historical greatness.
