Monday Morning Quarterback: Shane Carwin blew it

3134ppt_medium

Before I get into my points, I want to give respect and props to Shane Carwin. Hell of a fight. You hit Brock Lesnar with your best shots. That's all we as an audience can ask. Well that and a full gas tank, but gas prices are high and I don't blame you for putting in five bucks worth to hold you until you get home. Maybe a little less Twitter and blogging next time. But those are not my focus here. Still, you had more power than I even gave you credit for and you showed improved stand up (maybe you did read my Break it Down after all) and showed good TDD. So as a fighter and a warrior, my hat is off to you.

So back to my title. Shane Carwin blew it. I'm not talking about winning the title, I'm talking about making himself a star. Carwin's faux pas had little to do with his actions during the fight and more to do with them afterwards. After Lesnar's heroic comeback (in the fight and in life), the champ gave a humble speech celebrating his resurrection as a fighter and as a human being. It was a startling (to some) 180 turn from the brash and cocky leviathan the fans are accustomed to seeing. Carwin, menawhile, followed with an f-bomb ladened, stumbling, incoherant promo. This was shades of Mark Coleman post-Fedor beatdown levels.

Here he was gifted a perfect opportunity to sell himself (outside of his blog and Twitter) to fans watching and generate buzz about him ensuring personal gain. He had a starmaking 1st round putting the champion on his ass and unleashing a barrage of punches. He did not win, but he showed that with some cardio work, he is a force in the HW division (inside of one round). A golden opportunity placed in his lap and he kicked it wide right. He possibly had a (not really legit) gripe that the fight should've been stopped and that he beat Lesnar like no one had (or possibly would). I know he has the natural charisma of Vickie from Small Wonder, but I know he had emotions inside. He had to be kicking himself over a missed opportunity. Convey those emotions to the fans. Endear youself to them and they will love you as you fight, bleed and die for them. There's no shame in losing. You connect to the heartstrings of the fans and they will love you for it.

Take a look at Stephan Bonner. He's lost seven of his last four fights. A fading star. In the eyes of most, this was his last shot as many predicted him being cut in a loss. He goes out there and he performs and wins. But the fighting was only half the performance, he then went and cut a beautiful speech basically buying himself five more losses in the UFC. Chris Leben goes out and basically does the same thing. Great performance and then a great promo afterwards. Fans remember the fights, but the pathos will cement your place as one of the greats.

The beating he gave Lesnar will fade overtime as the sport grows and grows and time fades like old photographs. He had the opportunity to really strengthen his legacy as a fighter. In a sport of blood and broken bones, it's amazing how much emotional connections can make your future brighter. Shane Carwin is not a young man. His time in this sport is not long. But he has an opportunity to carve himself out a nice legacy (and financial security) in the time he does have. Unfortunately, that ability will stymied if he can't connect with the fans. His biggest (and maybe greatest) opportunity to do so was at UFC 116. Shane Carwin blew it.

Yeah, the post-fight comments seemed like a bizarre role reversal of what people came to expect from both guys.

I think he'll be back before you know it

Shane doesn’t have a lot of years left in him, but if he blitzes everyone like he did before, a rematch will be undeniable (and draw like fucking crazy even if neither of them hast he belt at the time). I would immediately set him up against the JDS/Nelson loser and give the rest of the division time to coagulate – Jon Madsen is 3-0 in the UFC now, I don’t think we’ll see him fighting any newcomers next time out; Kongo is booked against Browne: Duffee and Russow need opponents; so do Cro Cop, Nogueira and Mir. Setting up title fights for the next year or so lets us see if anyone will rise to try to crack the top five anytime soon (or let Dana sign someone from the wreckage of Strikeforce)

Honestly, and this may seem a little pro wrestling

but they should match Carwin against mid-level fighters. I’m talking Rothwell, etc. And let him beat them up and 3 or 4 wins and he’s back. Take the PRIDE approach and “protect” (as best as you can in MMA) a fighter.

He showed me more skills than I gave him credit for, but he blew his chance to get to that next level.

Are you sure that Rothwell would be a good fight for Carwin? I just had a terrible vision of Ben Rockhead taking a brutal beating in the first round and then Carwin… might gas. If you wanna protect Carwin, give him Struve…

Why protect him in the first place, he’s not handicapped.

How about Carwin vs Big Nog?

Not that I wouldn’t wanna see that fight, but I’d worry about putting Nog against Carwin after the being KO’d by Mir and Velasquez..

I'm of the mind that you protect certain fighters

The UFC is entertainment first and they could learn a little from PRIDE in terms of matchmaking. Not saying put people in with cans, but give a guy 2 fights against lower level opponents. Put him in there with Kongo. Kongo’s never going anywhere in the UFC with no TDD.

But part of the reason why people were downplaying Carwin’s legitimacy was strength of his record. He proved that he can hang with the big boys, so give him big boys, big fights.

It's not about "downplaying" his record

No one downplayed his record except Fedorlovers/Brockhaters who wanted his to be weakened when/if Brock beat him. He’s just as legit as anyone else in their division.

Good to see people getting on the record acknowledging that UFC fighters need to be protected and their records are padded.

They don't do it

I think they SHOULD in some cases. Not “pad” per se or really even"protect". I’m trying to find a better word for it. We’ll go with “PRIDE” their fighters. They clearly don’t because they threw Soko in with the wolves. Houston Alexander KO’s two people and the crowd is behind him. You could’ve made a star out of him while letting him get into a real camp and learn some skills, but they put him in there with Thiago. They didn’t protect Brock either.

People try to cognitive dissonate PRIDE as though they had big matchups all the time, but it couldn’t be farther from the truth.

I don't think so

I think they have a 24 year old guy in the most stacked division. He did lose to Matt Hammil (and how is that protecting him, Matt H. is a decent fighter) and then they gave him Vera. It’s not like he’s beaten someone of real stature. His biggest win was Vera. Bonnar and O’Brien are the suck.

JOB gets a bad wrap because of his style, but his only losses are to Andrei Arlovski, Cain Velasquez and Jon Jones.

I mean giving him a fight with Matyushenko after beating Hamill and Vera.

What is the point in that?

Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.

Who should he have fought?

Everyone is tied up or coming off fights or they are Ryan Bader.

100% Correct

He had a shot to gain a lot of fans in defeat, but that interview certainly didn’t do it. Not that anyone is going to hate him for anything he said, but he sure didn’t gain any fans for that.. Contrasting it against the compelling human stories presented by the words of Bonnar, Leben and even Lesnar really shows how flat Carwin fell.

I wonder how much the media pressure got in Carwin’s head leading up to the fight. It obviously had no effect on the fight itself, since he did everything he was supposed to in the first round, but he seemed a lot more comfortable talking on camera leading into the Gonzaga and Mir fights than this one.

by McEwen on Jul 5, 2010 1:24 PM EDT reply actions

It certainly did get to him

And in my Clash of the titans piece, I said that. The way he personally interacted with me let me know that he was mentally unfocused.

Like I said though, I don’t think it effected his performance in the fight at all. He did exactly what he wanted to in the first before he punched himself out.

by McEwen on Jul 5, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

He was too nervous

And gassed himself out. Anxiety can make cardio go out the window. Trust me, I know. He can talk that “my legs wouldn’t work” BS, but that was cardio related, not some unknown physical ailment.

Plus, this piece isn’t to discuss his performance, just his lack of performance afterwards.

True, true.
Definitely seemed anxious in every aspect other than the actual fighting (until Brock stood up that is).

Dude

I think Carwin was just trying to get words out of his mouth. He was fatigued, wiped out, choked out, and dead on his feet at that point. You saw the Brock Lock on his neck… I was amazed he could stand to be interviewed. Brock choked him incoherent… literally. That’s what you heard when Rogan held the mic to his face. I don’t think he even knew what was being asked or had an idea what was coming out his own mouth.

Rogan: So how about that first round?

Carwin: Turkey on white. 12". No mayo… no wait, mayo.

Rogan: Shane, you ok? You seem a little woozy.

Carwin: Yo, Adrian. Always be closing. Is The Office on?

Rogan: What’s next for you, Shane?

Carwin: No, turn left. Left! Fuck, you missed it. Now we’ll have to go around.
