O'brien may not be a bad bet against Mousasi

He could take him down and lay on him like he did with Herring. Mousasi looked horrible against the takedown with King Mo.

picking Amoussou is almost like stealing candy

Actually, I don’t think that is a great bet at all.

Nakamura may not be as exciting or dynamic, but he is fully capable of putting Amoussou on his butt and keeping him there. Amoussou reminds me a lot of Mousasi in that he has a lot of great offense but his ability to control where the fight takes place leaves something to be desired.

As if all wrestlers are created equal...

I’m amazed at how many people are drawn offsides by this bout. Lawal’s wrestling is arguably the best in the division and just skim over O’Brien’s credentials at Purdue to see that there really is no comparison between these two. Jake isn’t half the wrestler Mo is.

by MattitudeOU on Jul 5, 2010 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree that JOB isn’t as good as Lawal, but Lawal handled Mousasi with such ease it is not unreasonable to assume a lesser wrestler could do the same thing.

by Steve4192 on Jul 5, 2010 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

yes it is

Thats like saying because Anderson Silva destroyed Rich Franklin on the feet with such ease, its not unreasonable to think that a lesser striker such as Matt Hammil could do the same.

See what I did there? Lawal is maybe the best wrestler in the LHW division, so when he makes someone look so foolish with their takedown defense, its not always because that person, Mousasi, has such bad defense. Its probably because Lawal is that good of a wrestler.

Jake O’brien only wrestled at Perdue for 2 years, and his sophmore year, according to wiki says he went 14-18. That is very pedestrian for a D1 wrestler, and hardly the credentials of a three-time U.S. Senior National Wrestling Champion.

by Fedorable on Jul 5, 2010 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

but but you just compared a wrestler and a striker

hammil has lesser striking, but he is a wrestler at heart. A better comparison would be… Okami and munoz maybe? i don’t know.

by Body Triangle on Jul 7, 2010 8:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Mo want using any sort of special technique for a lot of those takedowns...

Mo was gassed and was just grabbing and pulling. Mousasi’s TD defense in that fight was plain terrible. I don’t know that I’d bet against him here, but I can see why people would think he would be laid on.

If you think that is what will happen, it is not an outragous wager IMO.

I personally think JOB has to finish the fight to win it and I don’t see that happening. Laying in Mousasi’s gaurd won’t be enough as Mousasi is very busy off his back. Japanese judges don’t tend to favour wrestling the way North American judges do.

by truck on Jul 7, 2010 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Mo has ko power which makes his takedowns even more effective. Job does not have the same power or speed of mo.

i dont understand how people say this is a stacked card
aoki v kawajiri is the only fight with top ten fighters
everything else is a good fighter vs a medicore fighter or 2 mid tier fighters
im all for watching it because ill watch regional mma if i can find it on tv (or online) but if this was a ufc card people would be bull*&^% with the mismatches and lack of elite fighters

by Richard Doughty on Jul 5, 2010 1:06 PM EDT reply actions

How many top 10 fighters were on the UFC 116 card?

People are saying it is a stacked card because it is stacked with good fights. Much like UFC 116, a lot of these fights look to be barn burners between equally matched competition. That is a rarity in Japanese MMA recently.

by Steve4192 on Jul 5, 2010 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

dont get me wrong im excited to see it but i dont see more then a few of these fights being really competitive

but i think sexyama vs leban was going to be such a barn burner either

by Richard Doughty on Jul 5, 2010 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

what'd ya think was gonna happen?

I was majorly looking forward to that fight…granted, its no wandy/akiyama or even wandy/lebn (soo muuuuuch wiiin)…but that was going to be a great fight!

by Body Triangle on Jul 7, 2010 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s got two top 10 LWS fighting for the title, two top 25 LWs fighting for the right to be the number 1 contender, three other top 10 fighters in bouts at HW, LHW, and FW and the always exciting Manhoef and Ammoussou. And while it’s almost impossible to compare to the UFC’s talent-level, even UFC 115 had only 1 top 10 fighter, Paulo Thiago, on the whole card while 116 had two. This card is stacked.

Because the UFC has most Top fighters under control..

they are rightfully held to a higher standard.

I’m also expecting Golden Boy Promotions to put on more quality fights than “Average Joe Promotions” somewhere in West Virginia.

And DREAM.15 has 5 Top 10 fighters on the card:
Aoki
Kawajiri
Overeem
Omigawa
Mousasi

Why is Omigawa fighting a winless can?

I know Omigawa is a lot better than his record, to the point where maybe he’s even earned an easy fight to get himself a little further above the .500 mark, but come on, fighting a dude who doesn’t even have any wins? That’s the sort of thing that should be officially labeled “non-competitive,” and why Japan needs a regulatory agency that isn’t just for show.

Other than that the card looks solid.

I’m not surprised that the odds are close for the Kawajiri vs. Aoki fight. Kawajiri is on a four fight winning streak that includes a victory over Gesias Cavalcante, but he hasn’t fought yet in 2010. Aoki has fought against tougher competition recently and has fought in 2010, but that was a tough loss to Gilbert Melendez. It’s too close to call and it’ll be interesting to see how the loss to Melendez has affected Aoki’s performance.

Melvin Manhoef’s opponent isn’t exaclt a tough one, Miuzuno is far too inexperienced to go against the frenzied attack of Manhoef. Also, only one of Mizuno’s fights has made it past the first round. Knowing that Mizuno doesn’t like to hold out for decisions will be good for Manhoef because we all know he’s capable of gassing.

Also, I don’t get why people think Mousasi will lose to Jake O’Brien. Jake’s only notable victory was against Heath Herring in 2007. He hasn’t proven himself to be a top drawer wrestler in MMA either as he lost in the first round to Cain Velasquez (was Cain’s fourth professional fight and he hadn’t fought high quality fighters at that point). Mousasi has far more experience, has only lost once in 16 fights and has had a better range of opponents.
