PrintThe Ultimate Fighting Championship returns on Saturday, August 7th, and fight fans will be treated to a world championship showdown between middleweight title holder and pound for pound king Anderson "The Spider" Silva, and number one challenger Chael Sonnen. Silva has dominated the 185-pound division since 2006, but in Sonnen, he may be meeting the one man with the style and determination to unseat him from the throne.
Also in action, welterweight contenders Jon Fitch and Thiago "Pitbull" Alves square off in their long-awaited rematch, and welterweight legend Matt Hughes takes on jiu-jitsu wizard Ricardo "Big Dog" Almeida.

Nelson takes it easily, pretty sure his destiny is to beat up Brock for the title after 5 rounds of low blows and eye pokes that goes to split decision. The fatlete beats up the athlete. Soap operas don’t get fukkin Betta!!

It's not a true number one contender fight.
If JDS wins they maybe give him the title shot. If Nelson wins there is no way they give him a crack at Lesnar. This is classic Dana feeding us full of shit. If they were really going to give JDS the shot then they would actually promote him.

curious how many people will follow through on their "i'll never buy another anderson silva headlined ppv" promise.
i think the potential for another ridiculous silva performance is there, but the rest of the card would be tough to miss.
wont silva just stick move and cruise to avoid the shot like he’s done for the past two ground fighters? how is this going to be different

but Chael is doing masterful job of deluding people into believing he has a chance. With the way he talks you wouldn’t guess that he can’t hurt anybody, has lousy standup and has never finished a fighter in the WEC or UFC.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

The prelim specials are for a set amount of them, and were probably agreed upon before cards were ever set.

If we have quick finishes usually they show a prelim as time filler before the next fight.
UFC 100 they didn’t air any prelims because we had 3 decisions, 1 of them a title fight, and two 2nd round KOs. By then the 3 hours were up.
Sometimes you have shows like UFC 91 where every fight made it to air.

Ive gone to every card since 100 except for 114. And everynow and then there was fights after the main event and sometimes there wasnt. And by that time all the “Hard core” fans were stupid drunk. Thanks for the info

I’ve been on that Sonnen train for a while. Damned or not, seeing him fight (and most likely getting his ass kicked) will be worth it. Hell one more promo from Sonnen, and I’ll order it now

Why does Chael Sonnen think he can beat Silva? His record is not impressive and he lost to someone that Silva crushed. I don’t care for Silva’s personality but I can’t deny that he is an extremel talented fighter. I’ve seen many videos and read all that Sonnen says and I just don’t get it. Is he delusional or what? Please help.

If you can see past all the shit he says to hype the fight hes pretty serious and does know he has his work cut out for him. Hes just trying to be a showmen and draw people in to get interested and hes doing just that.

Alves has not fought since UFC 100 and may feel the affects of ring rust. Plus, he was mauled by GSP’s wrestling, and Fitch will probably use the same game plan. I just don’t see Alves being able to stop Fitch’s takedowns.
