Quote of the Day: Jon Jones - Vladimir Matyushenko Is a "Huge Step-Up in Competition"
"I respect Vladimir a ton and I look at him as a huge step-up in competition and a huge test for me. I think he’s a great warrior and he’s everything when it comes to having a tough fight. He probably has some of the best wrestling credentials I ever fought against, he definitely has the best record I’ve ever gone against, and he’s the best fighter I ever fought. I think he’s better than Stephan Bonnar, better than Hamill, better than Brandon Vera. Technique wise and skill wise, I’m considering him the hardest fight I’ve had."
--Jon Jones (10-1), who has already faced the likes of Matt Hamill and Brandon Vera, says that the #24 ranked light heavyweight, Vladimir Matyushenko (24-4), is the best fighter he has ever been matched up against in his young MMA career.

Beating Jon Jones doesn't make you the number 1 contender
Besides the fact that beating two solid top ten opponents in Thiago Silva and Rampage has solidified Evans as the number 1 contender, if he were to require one more victory, Jones wouldn’t be it. The kid is amazing and has potential through the roof but the reality is he’s still probably 2 or 3 fights away from a title shot.
And besides as pointed out, they are teammates and won’t fight.

He already talks like GSP.
"...ride life straight to perfect laughter,
it's the only good fight there is."
I'd rather he talk like GSP than Chroll Sonnen.

Put Jones in with the winner of Lil' Nog - Bader and let them fight for an interim with Sugar.
If I wake up tomorrow and see that the world has ended, then that means God has finally granted my prayers.
GO Armageddon!!!
No way the UFC does that if Bader wins
Jones and Bader are the future of the LHW division, they won’t match those two up until one has the belt.
FWIW I think Bader is closer to a title shot
The powers that be at the UFC love seeing TUF guys get title shots.
Those guys are clearly the future though. Guys like Tito, Liddell and Rampage won’t be around forever.
Jones has stated repeatedly he will not fight Evans
or any other teammates at Jackson for that matter
Sort of an interesting contrast to this quote:
What concerns me the most about Matyushenko is his lack of technique. He kind of sucks in a way, but he knows how to win a fight. He wins ugly. I just like to fight more technical fighters because it’s more beautiful.
Jones is a connoisseur of MMA, and he watches tape to try to incorporate different fighting styles into his own. Anderson Silva, the longstanding UFC middleweight champion, is a particular favorite.
"He’s the man," Jones says.
The fight with Matyushenko is unlikely to resemble anything as pretty as a Silva highlight reel. Jones believes the crafty freestyle wrestler might turn their fight into an ugly affair.
"What concerns me the most about Matyushenko is his lack of technique," Jones says. "He kind of sucks in a way, but he knows how to win a fight. He wins ugly. I just like to fight more technical fighters because it’s more beautiful."
You’re misinterpreting what he meant by saying that…

Totally possible
I’m focusing on “He kind of sucks in a way” to “Technique wise and skill wise, I’m considering him the hardest fight I’ve had.”; to me, there’s a sort of disconnect between those two. They seem sort of contradictory.
How are you reading the entire thing?
I’m reading it as him saying that Matyushenko sucks to watch because he doesnt have the technique of a silva, he’s not saying he sucks as a fighter.
"Vikings fucked Vikings for generation after generation and their warrior bloodlines were passed on, and this motherfucker living in the woods in Minnesota got the best of the best."
That makes sense
I was taking that as “he sucks as a fighter”, not “he sucks to watch”, but your reading totally makes sense too plus it’s consistent with what he’s saying here.
Huh?
Hadn’t Jones previously referred to Matyushenko as being a neither a step up or stop down in competition, but a step sideways? Something tells me the kid’s been counseled a bit on media training.
