UFC on Versus 2 Preview: Jon Jones, the Autodidact of Mixed Martial Arts
I posted earlier this week about Greg Jackson's approach to coaching Jon Jones. One of the most interesting aspects of Jackson's approach is his willingness to give Jones a very wide open game plan with a LOT of options. But Dave Walsh is concerned lest Jackson's approach will hamper Jones against Matyushenko:
Greg Jackson's camp is a camp for winners, no doubt, but has also come under scrutiny for being a rather cautious and at times "boring" camp. The argument for this being beneficial for Jones is that Greg Jackson himself is a self-taught martial artist. Gaidojutsu is made up, it didn't exist before Greg Jackson watched a few Judo and BJJ instructional videos and added those holds to his wrestling base. Sound familiar? Of course, with Jackson, everything has become so precise and formulaic now that it is hard to argue that the same level of innovative spirit exists within him. The point, though, is that Jackson understands this energy and could help Jones harness it.
On the other hand, think of Jones right now like a chunk of clay, still forming. Greg Jackson's strict training and gameplans could be throwing Jones right into the kiln then just putting on layers of glaze without letting Jones take the shape he really could be. Many make the argument of raw clay stilll being raw clay and needing to be formed quickly and made to follow the rules to build up a solid base. For some people, there doesn't need to be a strong base, they already understand and learn and grow at their own pace. I'm just not sure if Jon Jones needs "tweaking" or a coat of paint right now as much as he needs his own space to explore and do what he feels he needs to grow.
It's an interesting point and one to consider seriously, especially since we've seen Georges St Pierre evolve into an ever more cautious and ever less entertaining fighter under Jackson's mentoring.
But the discussion has made me do more research on just how self-taught Jones really is. Everyone knows he competed in Greco-Roman wrestling at the junior college level, but that's clearly not where he learned the array of judo throws and spinning elbow strikes he's unleashed in the Octagon.
It's interesting to me that Jones, of all the new talent to emerge in the last couple of years, appears to be the most serious student of the game with the exception of Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal. Ironically, Jones' free-wheeling everything and the kitchen sink style, is the polar opposite of King Mo's dance-with-the-one-who-brung-you/keep-it-simple-stupid take down and ground and pound style. Both guys are whip smart and serious students of MMA, and yet one is a total radical in the cage and the other couldn't be more conservative.
Someday we may get to see Jones and King Mo lock up. This Sunday's bout with Vladimir Matyushenko, himself a stolid conservative wrestling-based fighter, could be a preview of how that bout will go, at least stylistically.
Be sure and "bone up" on Jones' technique by reading The Judo Chops of Jon Jones.
More on Jones' learning secrets in the full entry.
Here's an interview with the Las Vegas Sun where he talks about the reading he did to prepare for Brandon Vera and learning Judo moves off the Internet:
"I bought a book that talked about fighting in your core and fighting a smart fight," Jones said. "Fighting Brandon Vera, I knew he's a great striker and I was preparing for it.
"When I read that book I realized, there's no need to strike in this fight. I've been a wrestler since I was 14 years old. Why go out and have a Muay Thai fight with somebody who might be better than me?"
...
Widely regarded as an unorthodox and unpredictable fighter, Jones has built his style based on what he's learned in the gym from instructors and what he's taught himself using methods like YouTube.
While it's known that Jones comes from a Greco-Roman wrestling background, he's evolved that style into his own by combining it with moves he's picked up from studying judo on the Internet.
"A lot of the moves I'm performing aren't actually Greco-Roman, they're judo," Jones said. "You can't use a trip in Greco-Roman. I don't have an official judo coach but I've been, it sounds weird, getting on the Internet and watching a lot of Judo moves. I take it seriously."
Here he is talking to Ben Fowlkes about developing his striking game via You Tube:
"The gym I train at is a really small gym, a lot of wrestlers, so I didn't have a striking coach until this last fight," Jones said. "I had to teach myself how to strike. I would study a lot of videos on YouTube, or go to different websites where I could watch old Pride fights. I just became obsessed with MMA and watched videos over and over again. I learned the moves and took them to practice and started using them. Before I knew it I was considered a pretty good striker.
"YouTube videos can really teach you a lot. It depends how you search for them. If you look really hard, you can find videos of seminars from some of the best fighters in the world. It's just a matter of taking them seriously."
Then there's this interview with The Garv discussing Judo and the elbow he landed on Brandon Vera:

Jones’ unpredictability is one of the things that makes him one of the most entertaining fighters around today. I don’t think that Greg Jackson’s influence is going to shape Bones into a “boring” fighter, as I recall Jackson talking in an interview about not wanting to stifle Jon’s creativity against Matyushenko. I think training with Jackson will help Jon develop a more effective, scenario-specific arsenal of techniques to unleash on his opponents. Jones is the future of the sport, and he’s just going to keep getting better. Can’t wait to see where he’s at in 2-3 years!
But if you are stupid, you will be beaten with a stick - Proverbs 10:13
Greg Jackson is always a good influence.
On the other hand, you can only imagine what training with some of the Black House guys could do for him. If he learned how to manipulate range and timing like Lyoto or Anderson….
The self taught MMA fighter has always been around. They just didn’t have to tools that Jones’ has, technological or physical.

I've disagreed with your first statement for awhile.
I think Jardine is the perfect case study of this. He’s a guy with decent natural ability and could have been a successful sprawl and brawler around the low end of the top 10 for a good time. But Jackson was so happy to “embrace the funkiness” that he Jardine never learned to defend a left hook. Thiago Silva, Rampage, Ryan Bader, Wanderlei, and Houston all beat him with the same punch. That sucks.
Jones could turn out the same way. Obviously he has more upside and physical ability but I don’t think Jackson’s is a place for him to stay for more than two years, just enough time to get his mental game up. Imagine if he spent time working with Alistair at Golden Glory on learning how to be an effective, lanky ball of fast twitch muscle. Freddie Roach or Peter Welch teaching him how to actually use length and a jab to force your opponent to reset and stay off balance. Work with Xande Ribeiro and Demian Maia to learn how to bait and pass from top control and showing him what to watch for coming from the bottom. Going to AKA and polishing his wrestling against Cormier. It’s all doable, and I hope he’s not too comfortable being with a guy who is going to let ‘unpredictable and unorthodox’ turn into ‘exploitable and technically deficient.’

lol
Well don’t bottle it up inside :)
Yeah, I disagreed with myself a little. It was pretty contradictory post.
I agree, for someone as green as Jones, Jackson will always be a good influence. For someone who has established their style, he may not be the best.
Golden Glory is a good example, those guys would definitely be able to push Jones and he wouldn’t be the only big athletic person around. Just the advice he could get on his physical conditioning would be huge.
The Black House guys. If he get develop that sense of range and timing, along with the picture perfect technique; there’s no telling what he could do.

Georges St. Pierre
is not becoming a more boring fighter. Not to me at least. I really enjoy watching him work. He really pays attention to everything being taught to him and that’s helped elevate him to the level that he is at; nearly untouchable.
Jon Jones is likely rapidly approaching a level like that as well. I don’t want to crown him yet but you can’t doubt the tool that he possesses. Makes me think of Lesnar…everything is there already, someone just needs to teach it to him. The fact that Bones has been teaching himself in a round-a-bout way is just astonishing.
I’m really anxious to see how he does against Matyushenko.
Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.

If they taught Jones some basic boxing fundamentals – hell, just teach him how to jab properly and throw a two piece- he wouldn’t have to rely so much on spinning back elbows and such, which are moves that will get him in trouble as he starts going against better and better fighters.
But considering they’re never been able to teach Keith Jardine any basic fundamentals, and just let him do his thing, it’s a lost cause. That’s why I facepalmed as soon as I heard Jon Jones was going to Jackson’s last year. That’s not a place for a young, raw fighter to learn new skills. That’s a place for a guy who’s already fully developed to reaffirm what he already knows and gain more self confidence.

Greg Jackson's job isn't to make exciting fighters
His job is to make winners. Yes, GSP is more ‘boring’ (if you want to call it that) but you can’t say he’s not harder to beat now than when he relied more on striking. Sometimes it’s necessary to tamp down the craziness so you can be a more efficient fighter.
Also, it justs freaks the shit out of me how Jones can actually learn and use judo moves from the internet.

Yep
If you can learn to break dance on youtube
you can learn to do judo throws. It doesn’t hurt that he’s huge and really strong.

Internet video is better than books for learning
And he doesn’t learn them just from watching, he goes into a gym and practices. Like he said, there are great seminars online for free.
His throws, trips, and takedowns are works of beauty
I can’t think of anyone in MMA history who is as successful with such a wide spectrum of grappling techniques to go from standing to ground. Granted, they’ve all been against the lower half of the LHW division and he has yet to test his skills against the upper echelon, but the time is coming.
Well, GSP. He’s just not as flashy as Jones. You’re not going to see the man break out a German suplex in the middle of a fight.

Right, which is why I further qualified the statement with a wide spectrum
GSP has the sweetest double and singles legs ever, but thats his completele arsenal, or at least what he’s shown in the cage.
You have only been watching GSP since his first fight with Serra...
amirite?

I think Karo has used some pretty sweet throws in his fights.

Bones is a nerds dream.
He’s an exciting and agile fighter, that learn stuff via the internet while being considered one of the best in the world.
I love hearing about fighters who actively learn game on Youtube. It shows they’re more concerned with actually getting better than by resting on who they train with or worse yet, who’ve they’ve beaten in the past.

HUGE fan of greg jackson
He teaches something that some people frown upon, strikes from the full guard. Elbow strikes from the full guard are probably some of the best a fighter can land, you can generate a great deal of force in a smaller space with the elbow, plus its not gloved.
In the dan hardy fight, Greg Jackson told gsp to stay in his full guard and punish him, instead gsp went to side control everytime.
Greg Jackson told Jon jones to use elbows if he ended up in Brandon vera’s guard, and he finished him with strikes.

"Gaidojutsu is made up"
Every Martial Art is “made up”.
We’re not talking about religions that were handed down by God. Some are just made up in the last 10 years and some are made up hundreds of years ago.
Who cares? What matters is what is effective, that’s why I’m all for more recently made up Martial Arts. MMA is a new sport and has different needs than the old disciplines were trying to fulfill.
Some day people will just teach and study MMA and we won’t have to talk about Karate, Muay Thai, Greco-Roman and all this. Because the best Martial Art for MMA will always be a mixture that doesn’t fit in any one of those old categories.

It is retarded to blame GSP's cautiousness on Jackson...
if anything, you should blame it on Serra.
In GSP you have a dominate champion who is very weary of leaving things hang out there and getting another fluke loss. He has too much riding on his status as the WW Champ to play it fast and loose in a title fight.
Blaming that on Jackson’s is ridiculous.
I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.
If anything, you should blame it on Sherri Spencer.

I’ve always felt that Spencer has put it in GSP’s mind that he has to be a goody two shoes in every interview, who does nothing but go out and win fights to be successful and get all the big time sponsorships and such. GSP really seemed to change once she came into the picture. I think he’s worried that if he says the wrong thing, or if he loses a fight, it might end up costing him somehow. He’s very image conscious these days.
Just my opinion, of course.
