Around SBN: Fighters React to Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

2010 Bloody Elbow Reader Awards: Fighter of the Mid-Year

I lived in Bloomington, Indiana for three years. Bloomington's a haven for all sorts of odd folks - muscians, gays, lesbians, transgenders, punks, hippies, drug fiends.

While there, I met a guy named Tyler. Tyler came from a broken home, dyed his hair all sorts of ways, and had a serious problem with alcohol. The kind of problem that involves fighting and blacking out and all sorts of general asshattery. Tyler, like a lot of spiraling degenerates, was also extremely charismatic, charming, and loyal. He had that sort of puppy dog draw that made you want to pick him up and tell him things were gonna be all right.

I've felt the same way about Chris Leben since I borrowed a friend's copy of the first season of the Ultimate Fighter years ago. So, it's nice to see a redemption of sorts for him.

The year 2009 was not a good one for Chris. He served a suspension for the first half of the year after being popped for steroids following his fight with Michael Bisping at UFC 89. Current UFC washout Jake Rosholt put him to sleep upon his return at UFC 102.

Leben returned this past January and dominated Jay Silva for three rounds en route to a unanimous decision victory. Then he took on Aaron Simpson at the TUF 11 Finale. Leben wore out Simpson in the first 8 minutes of the fight. He turned on the gas when he noticed Simpson lost the energy necessary to take him down and forced a referee stoppage in round two.

Days later, Wanderlei Silva pulled out of his UFC 116 fight with Yoshihiro Akiyama. The UFC scrambled to find a replacement with only two weeks until the event. The UFC approached Leben, who initially turned down the offer like most rational men. Leben sat around and thought to himself, "Why the hell not?" So Chris Leben fought Yoshihiro Akiyama two weeks in the co-main event of UFC 116 after beating Aaron Simpson two weeks earlier.

And he won. The fight went all over the place. Leben brawled. Akiyama tossed Leben around. Leben played off his back. Akiyama brawled. Leben found himself in big trouble in round two when Akiyama blasted him looked to have him out on his feet. Somehow, Chris survived and kept fighting. Akiyama looked to lay and pray in round three. Leben, still looking out of it, stayed more active from the bottom, but it was unclear how the judges would score the fight. With less than 30 seconds left in the fight, Leben threw up a triangle. The triangle was sloppy, but Akiyama had nothing left. Akiyama struggled to defend, lost his balance, and tapped.

Chris Leben now holds the Zuffa-era record for short time-elapsed between two victories in the UFC, and it's unlikely that anyone will ever top that.

Full results after the jump.

This one could look very different come January

If Velasquez beats Brock, he probably takes it.

The future of the lightweight division looks like a lot of fun too

Agreed. . .

Whatever the outcome at 118, I think Edgar vs. Sotiropoulos would be a really fun fight to watch.

I love me some me.

Leben?

He is a tough SOB. It still boggles my mind that he didn’t remember what round he was in.

Not to nitpick, but...

the title obviously means I’m about to nitpick. This statement isn’t true:

Chris Leben now holds the record for short time-elapsed between two victories in the UFC, and it’s unlikely that anyone will ever top that.

Any of the early tournaments had guys winning two fights in the same night, so they had two victories in the UFC in less than the two weeks that Leben took.

Other than that, solid write-up, and I totally agree. Leben seemed like a dumbass kid who refused to grow up for most of his UFC career, but he’s done a complete 180. He’s focused on training and his career and seems like the days of boozing and doping (at least doping without timing his cycles) are behind him.

the way Sexyyama trained for that fight Wandy probably would have murdered him o_0. And it’s not that he didn’t train hard after finding out it was Leben either, it was really close to the fight when he found out.

Can't knock giving Leben the nod here

I was not a fan of his after seeing him come in sloppy and get arm-triangle choked by Jake. He bounced back strong with the best month of his career. I am partial to Shogun, and seeing him holding up the belt does it for me.

He’s 4-0 in 2010 and it’s not even August yet.

I live in Btown right now, and can’t say that I would call it a haven for odd folk. Granted, I don’t usually venture too far off campus beyond College Mall and the Kirkwood/downtown area. Nevertheless, those first sentences makes Bloomington sound like Montpelier when I’d say it’s pretty much your typical midwest big state school college town.

Oh, and <3 Leben

Bloomington has its fair share of hippies, druggies, and gay people. More so than Purdue, for sure. Ball State??? Even.

by jawz10 on Jul 30, 2010 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

If you’re staying in the college bars on Kirkwood at night, maybe you don’t see the mix? I moved down there because I had some musician/punk rock friends, so obviously I had a totally different experience than your typical college kid. But seriously, just on Kirkwood you should see tons punks, hippies, eccentrics, crazies, etc. There’s more than a couple mental health group homes in town, which are filled with unstable people.

As an aside, these might be some surprising facts about the LGBT community in town (from the B-town Tourism website):

Bloomington was named the number one “surprisingly gay small town destination” by Advocate.com and OutTraveler.com.

Bloomington was named an editor’s choice by PlanetOut.com, recognizing this cool Midwestern college town as a ground-breaker among in gay and lesbian travel destinations.

“The verdict: Whether you’re gay, straight or somewhere in between, Bloomington offers something rarely found in this country: a small town with a bold history of openness and acceptance.” Out Traveler Magazine.

I need to visit there soon.

Kind of feel the same way about Leben as I do about Baroni

Both first came off as cocky, arrogant a-holes in the beginning who at one point or another juiced. But both, in interviews and such come across as pretty deep and self-aware and hungry to recognized. It’s hard to deny that his last two back-to back in a few weeks victories aren’t inspiring.

I didn’t say you were “sheltered and close-minded” but categorizing musicians as “odd folks” and gays in the same category as drug fiends kinda comes off that way. I’d say the “odd folks” categorization might of been a poor choice of words. “Marginalized” or something to that effect might of been better. Just a writing critique, nothing personal.

I'm a musician

I spent years playing guitar, hanging out with musicians, networking, jamming, practicing.

I can say with absolute certainty, musicians are odd folks. There is nothing sheltered or close minded about it, it is a fact.

I'm a human

I spent years living amongst “normal” people who work 9-5 jobs, watching primetime tv nightly. I can say with absolute certainty, status quo Americans are odd folks. There’s nothing conscious about most of them, its a fact.
