Chael Sonnen's Xenophobic Attacks on Anderson Silva Won't Make Him the Villain in UFC 117 Morality Play

Photo

Anderson Silva is the least popular fighter of his caliber in UFC history. Despite being promoted by Dana White from on high as the best fighter in the world, Silva has continued to provide the UFC sub par performances at the box office. I created a bit of a stir last week by suggesting that race and nationality play a significant part in the public's ho-hum reaction to Silva. Although some disagreed, at least one person clearly believes UFC fans prefer their fighters to be English speaking Americans. His name? Chael Sonnen.

Sonnen has already gone after Silva for his dress and "cocky" attitude, using time tested racial code words to make it obvious what he means to a subset of the sport's racist fans. But Silva's race isn't Sonnen's main target-it's his nationality. Dedrick Muhammad called Sonnen out last month at the influential Huffington Post:

In my research into the history of racism and racial inequality I found that much of white supremacist or European racism had as its justification a belief in religious superiority and what I will call civilizational superiority. Whether it was in relation to Native Americans or Africans in America, justification for mistreatment of these people were that they were pagans or non-Christian and were not as advanced as Europeans, in other words savages. Countries such as Brazil, Haiti, and Cuba, that have incorporated African religious and cultural traditions into their national identity and way of life, have long been seen as inferior for allowing non-European traditions to "taint" their respective national identities. So when Chael Sonnen spoke of the Brazilian manager Ed Soares as praying to "a demon effigy" and referred to Soares' "piglet tribe of savages," this was right in line with racist rhetoric that has been used for centuries.

Yesterday, Sonnen took the rheotoric to the next level. On The Fight Show with Mauro Ranallo, Sonnen called Portuguese, the language spoken by more than 200 million people world wide, "just a half step up from Pig Latin." It was the least ambiguous attack yet, making it clear that his opponent's nationality was a major issue with Sonnen.

In response to his antics, pro wrestling blog Cage Side Seats ranked Sonnen as one of the "Top Heels in MMA Today:"

Chael Sonnen might be trying harder to sell himself as a heel than anyone on this list. Largely regarded as a boring lay-and-pray fighter before he came to the UFC, he's reinvented himself in the UFC as the man destined to beat Anderson Silva. At least, that's what he'll tell you. He's talked more outlandish trash about Anderson Silva than can be recounted, pitching himself as a savior come to rescue the UFC from the curse of the dancing Brazilian. In the process, he's somehow generated a good deal of hype for a fight where the oddsmakers have him as a very large underdog.

I think that's missing the mark.  Sonnen is manipulating fans and the media-that much is certain. But he's not doing it to be the heel (pro wrestling jargon for 'bad guy'). Chael Sonnen wants to be the knight in shining armor, rescuing the sport from the man he sees as a "gangster," part of a tribe of "savages" that speak a language "half a step up from Pig Latin." Sonnen actually believes his xenophobic banter will make him the hero, not the heel. Sadly, he may be right.

UPDATE: Cageside Seats writer King Matt compares Sonnen-Silva to a legendary pro wrestling match:

Up until recently, it would have been hard to believe that Sonnen is going to be the fan favorite heading into UFC 117.  The same thing could have been said about Stone Cold when his feud with Bret Hart started.  Up until the age of Stone Cold, all the heroes in pro-wrestling had a squeaky clean imagine ("To all my little Hulkamaniacs, say your prayers, take your vitamins and you will never go wrong") and Bret Hart was one of those squeaky clean guys.  But, Stone Cold’s I-am-going-to-do-what-I-want persona appealed to pro-wrestling fans around the world.  Finally, the "switch" happened at Wrestlemania 13.  Squeaky clean Bret Hart became the heel and badass Stone Cold became the hero.

Just like with Bret Hart and Stone Cold, the "switch" is happening with Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva.  As we all know, for months Sonnen has talked an enormous amount of crap about Anderson Silva.  Mainly saying that Silva is a fake and an a-hole.  When Sonnen first started his rants a few months ago, it was fun and original, but lately it seemed to be getting desperate and annoying.  It seemed that Sonnen’s never-ending trash talking was beginning to piss of MMA fans.  Then the UFC 117 conference called happened yesterday.  In the span of about seven minutes, it seemed that everything Sonnen was saying about Silva was justified.  Silva came off as a selfish jerk and was later torn apart by the media and fans alike.

Hero or Heel doesn’t matter so much to me. I’m pretty happy that he’s actually gotten me interested in watching this mismatch of a fight at all!

I agree wholeheartedly . . .

Sonnen is not, not, not, a stupid guy. He’s a Republican, and probably has a little bit of the downhome country white superiority complex I lived with in Texas, but he’s not stupid.

Literally everything he has said, since he earned his shot at Silva, has been to sell this fight. Whether Sonnen believes Portugese is an inferior language is completely irrelevant. He is saying what he is saying not to express his racial, national or linguistic superiority, but to get a bigger check when the PPV cut comes his way (or to earn that cut for being a draw the next time he fights).

Mr. Snowden, please don’t feed the trolls.

I love me some me.

Mr. Snowden is feeding himself, not the trolls. Again and again he keeps trying to milk topics for every last drop of controversy. Certainly Chael Sonnen is spewing tremendous amounts of BS leading up to this fight and the racist undercurrent in some remarksis quite evident, yes. But there’s no compelling evidence that it is anything more than roleplay.

To save me some time on 25% of all threads, here's the universal answer to the Fedor-debate: Fedor is the most accomplished MMA fighter ever. That is a fact. If he still is the best fighter at this point in time is up for debate.

Again you're redirecting the issue . . .

My contention is that Jonathan Snowden is feeding a trolling Chael Sonnen. That is irrespective of the rightness or wrongness of Sonnen’s outward expression, or that whether or not his venue is appropriate.

I love me some me.

Let me be on record that I'm not a Snowden fan

I think he’s a troll of a writer, but a writer’s job is to get people interested. Look at the length of this thread? Knowing a few writers myself, Snowden may not even believe the crap that he writes. But if it gets him attention, he’ll continue to write it.

HOWEVER, I think this is a relevant topic worthy of discussion. You may agree or disagree with Snowden’s point, but the fact remains it’s a polarizing subject that people have an opinion on.

If you ignore it, it won’t go away. That doesn’t work with the school yard bully, and it doesn’t work here.

Cardio - The BIG question. Does Shane Carwin have cardio? He's never gone past the first round. His muscle mass is astounding and we all know that with all that muscle comes a need for the heart to pump fresh oxygenated blood to keep them from building lactic acid. He does train up in the thin air of Colorado, so that can't do anything but help. However, we have seen him pretty winded after a 1st round fight. Adrenaline dump or cardio problems? We won't find out the answer to that until someone takes him out of the first round.

And yes Snowden is Chaelesque. And to answer your other question. I don’t think that all inflammatory questions/comments are trolling. If it’s a legitimate position, and a legitimate question, then it’s not trolling. Even Snowden has an actually relevant topic gifted to him so he doesn’t have to stretch to piss people off.

Maybe, or he's just firing out of every cannon he can possibly find...

Of course it makes a difference in this case. It shines a totally different light on Sonnen’s character wether he believes it or not, if this is just careless trashtalk or calculated racism. Doubly so, because while his remarks have a troubling undercurrent, most of the perceived “racism” stems from the interpretation that journalists and other commenters apply to Sonnens remarks. If Sonnen was known to harbour this line of thinking, it may be “ok” to jump to the conclusion he has racist motives in saying what he says. But since there’s no evidence that Chael is of that terrible mindset it would be prudent to assume him innocent and discard it as what it possibly is: stupid banter. But of course, that wouldn’t make for too nice a headline and much less outrage.

You are right of course from the “Oh my gosh! What are Non-MMA-Fans gonna say, when they hear this?!”-perspective and that point can be made – with the proper differentiation.

His quote saying “Brazil isn’t a bowing culture. You bow to somebody in Brazil and they’ll hit you over the head and take your wallet.”

Sonnen is clearly making nationality an issue out of this. But so is the UFC with the heavy Brazil vs. US matchmaking, which I feel is a noteworthy element as well.

Not in advertising, not in posters. This isn’t like UFC: USA vs Canada.

By attacking Silva’s nationality, it’s is also a subtle attack at his race and culture.

Like I said, it's the matchmaking, not overt marketing.

But people will notice. What do you want to bet that a “USA!” chant erupts at least three times during the main card? Sig bet?

And yeah, I agree completely that it’s an attack on his culture, but not a subtle one. He said “They aren’t a bowing culture” before implying it’s a culture of thievery and mugging. That’s pretty direct.

And when has the crowd chanted USA against his opponent? Never.

Saying they aren’t a bowing culture is correct, but Anderson’s bows don’t come from Brazilian culture, it comes from his love of Oriental culture.

They see comments as “not really racist” because they themselves have similar lines of thought and don’t see a problem with it. People are in denial that they’ve got racist tendencies at all. The line that crosses into racism is almost always a subjective line that is a few ticks further than where said persons “line” is.

It's why articles like this get so many comments

A lot of people get upset when you dare bring up race.

Called it before the fight:
Cardio - The BIG question. Does Shane Carwin have cardio? He's never gone past the first round. His muscle mass is astounding and we all know that with all that muscle comes a need for the heart to pump fresh oxygenated blood to keep them from building lactic acid. He does train up in the thin air of Colorado, so that can't do anything but help. However, we have seen him pretty winded after a 1st round fight. Adrenaline dump or cardio problems? We won't find out the answer to that until someone takes him out of the first round.

I... wait, what?

Slow your roll buddy, I’m pretty sure we’re on the same side. I’m saying that Sonnen isn’t being as subtle as people think and it’s clearly xenophobic. I’ve been sketchy about him since the beginning of this whole shit-talk fest. I’m pretty sensitive on issues of race, both intellectually and personally, having been a victim of race related violence myself.

Let me tell you though, and I’ve said this over and over again in race discussions on this site: There are fighters who haven’t publicly given you any good reason to doubt them who are racist little shits. Names will not be named, but I’ve heard awful things come out of these guys mouths.

The Rampage vs Rashad race subject was quite an issue

So, even when there are two black Americans that get into the realm of racism, it’s still an issue. So is it making an ocean out of a sink, or just pointing out the elephant in the room?

More whiteness here...but no consensus

1 white man (God only knows what mix) + 1 white woman (also unknown combo) and 4 white kids (God only knows + unknown = ???)

I want Sonnen to take him down repeatedly and control him before finally getting submitted – just to show how a better MMA wrestler (like you-know-who) might beat him.

Anderson is my kids (all girls) favorite fighter (along with Jon Jones) – they all want AS to KHTFO in the first.

My wife couldn’t give 2 shits about the fight (or MMA in general), but says “don’t bet the ranch”…to which I replied, what the fuck, its just a ranch…

Mind you… I am from Canada and the “I am American”, “I am better than everyone else” bit that Sonnen is pulling doesn’t usually get receive too well here at the best of times.

Everyone I know (white yellow and brown friends) wants to see Sonnen lose in devastating fashion.

i also can’t believe Chael got away with that pygmy savage joke, or that portuguese is a step away from pig latin. None of this is subtle, this is overt, over the top, racism. The only thing worse would have been if Chael said “Hey Anderson! BOOGA BOOGA BOOGA!”

but I just can’t wrap my mind around it. Its pretty racist, whether or not you take it out of context. Pygmy savages is a direct reference to the white man’s burden, and Chael may have said that not realizing this, but its hard to imagine he didn’t. Either way…he’s got people talking!

I still don’t like that you associate someone talking about someone looking/dressing like a gangster or baggy/sagging pants is being racist. When I judge someone that dresses like that it doesn’t matter what race they are or appear to be I still think negatively of them just based on their choice of wardrobe.

You can use the same thing with someone that dresses goth or emo. The majority that do dress that way or would be labeled as such are white but there are other races that dress the same I categorize them the same as the white goth kids.

It is human nature to base judgement based on someone’s appearance. It is a survival mechanism. Can some people get it wrong? Yes. What Chael is calling out about Anderson is that he is a poser more then anything. He dresses in a way to portray himself as something that he is not and if Anderson really feels that he is then he should live up to it and quite playing around.

Actually it’s a UFC fight. Chael only promotes SportFight, doesn’t compete in them.

Maybe a bad choice of words but my point is I don’t think Chael is being racist when he was refering to the way Anderson dresses. I don’t think Anderson really dresses that “gangster” relative to people I’ve been around.

by YoungGun on Jul 29, 2010 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

that in and of itself is not racist

and i didn’t take it as racism when i first heard it. But when he started referring to anderson as a pygmy (or in his silly term, piglet), i took it to mean racism. Its like the Scott Peterson Case: No hard evidence, but plenty of circumstantial.

by Body Triangle on Jul 29, 2010 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it's pretty racist

If Anderson Silva were a white guy you’d be more likely to refer to him as a Tony Hawk or even Lance Armstrong rather than a gangster.

We can agree to disagree if this statement was racist, but I hope we can agree that Sonnen is quite out of touch when it comes to identifying gang attire. Unless gangsters dress differently in Oregon. I think when Sonnen was being more vague he was more likely to strike a chord with people that have minor Xenophobic/racist tendencies, but the further he’s gone, the harder it is for borderline Xenophobes to follow in rank.

by Doc Martin 28 on Jul 29, 2010 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

As for the piglet or pygmy thing. It is not an outright racist attack. He is basically calling Ed Soares evil and his fighters as his little followers. I understand that people can take offense to it as being racist but I think it more speaks to the naivety of racism in his remark for Chael to say something like that. If someone is truely a racist and doesn’t want someone to think they are they usually go out of their way not to say something racist. If they are racist and don’t care then they are usually a lot more blunt about it. Considering Chael is running for public office I would assume if he is a racist that he’d being going more out of his way to make sure he doesn’t say something to out him. When racism isn’t at the forefront of your thought process sometimes you can unintentionally say things that are offensive to another race and not even realize it.

I do feel most of what Chael says if for shock value and the media is playing right along.

In my defense, this is my first foray into the Snowden 5 Minutes of Hate, but this doesn’t seem “minor” to me. He’s making the assertion that Sonnen is racist. It just seems that when flinging such serious accusations it’s important to bring the facts.

“Uppity” is the first “codeword” that springs to mind and Sonnen hasn’t said that. There are a few others that I look out for and he hasn’t said any of them.

I agree that many of Sonnen’s comments can fall securely in the “insensitive” category, but not quite racist. I’ll grant nationalistic and xenophobic.

The format of the show and the personalities are actually pretty good. But they are way too closed-minded and toe the company line too often.

Its actually the attractiveness of their personalities that makes what they do that much more devastating to the sport. They seem likeable, so you want to agree with them. But then they try to convince you that what TO had for breakfast is important or that who Derek Jeter marries matters. And when they say MMA is too violent without having seen it, it harms the sport. They are not only swaying opinions, they are deciding for America what sports and what parts of sports are important.

When you have to resort to scientific technicalities

You’re missing the point.

Sociologically speaking; just like with Sonnens words, you need to look beyond the words that are being spoken and gather the intent behind them. Taken individually they mean little if anything, taken as a whole it becomes part of an undeniable pattern. Because the line of racism/xenophobia is blurred in the technical sense, it doesn’t mean that the comments aren’t wrong. Because it doesn’t fit the textbook definition of the word being described, does that make it any less discriminatory?

I think that’s missing the mark. Sonnen is manipulating fans and the media-that much is certain. But he’s not doing it to be the heel (pro wrestling jargon for ‘bad guy’). Chael Sonnen wants to be the knight in shining armor, rescuing the sport from the man he sees as a “gangster,” part of a tribe of “savages” that speak a language “half a step up from Pig Latin.” Sonnen actually believes his xenophobic banter will make him the hero, not the heel.

Please check out this video interview here from April where Sonnen pretty much admits he’s doing schtick and is deeply embellishing things. This is a man who had a standing invitation to WCW after going through their Power Plant program in 1998, only for them to go out of business in 2001 before he graduated college. Maybe just maybe he was either a wrestling fan or at least watched quite a bit of it in anticipation of being a wrester some day?

Is he bigot? Quite possibly, but as a guy who was a hardcore wrestling nerd for about 10 years before finally getting sick of it, it’s overwhelmingly obvious to me that he’s aping various wrestlers’ heel routines. His “Knight In Shining Armor Coming To Rescue MMA” is basically Chris Jericho coming to rescue the WWE from mediocrity. His xenophobia is any number of people.

Chael Sonnen spoke of the Brazilian manager Ed Soares as praying to “a demon effigy” and referred to Soares’ “piglet tribe of savages,” this was right in line with racist rhetoric that has been used for centuries.

You seem to have a very low opinion of MMA fans. (This also came through in your previous article, where you wrote that “racism . . . plays no small part in Silva’s failures at the marketplace.”) Do you really feel that MMA fans are more racist than fans of other sports, and if so, what is your evidence? And where is the evidence that any fans have responded positively to Sonnen’s rants (which I agree are racist)?

FWIW, I found this piece that discusses the demographics of MMA fans:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/7497139/Investing-in-MMA-Industry-Report-Oct-27-2008
It says MMA fans are younger and more affluent than those who follow any other major American sport. I do not associate those factors with increased racism.

Depending on the particulars of the people, it ranges from evidence (to everyone else) that one belongs among the ignorati to being truly socially unacceptable (in its most literal sense).

Sadly however, anti-semitism is always fashionable in such circles…

Cardio - The BIG question. Does Shane Carwin have cardio? He's never gone past the first round. His muscle mass is astounding and we all know that with all that muscle comes a need for the heart to pump fresh oxygenated blood to keep them from building lactic acid. He does train up in the thin air of Colorado, so that can't do anything but help. However, we have seen him pretty winded after a 1st round fight. Adrenaline dump or cardio problems? We won't find out the answer to that until someone takes him out of the first round.

The racism has to come from somewhere?

Are you saying they go on Youtube and act racist just because and dont feel that way in real life? There’s still a very significant portion of this country that is bigoted.

Have you ever been on Xbox live? If you have a Black avatar you are called all types of shit.

maybe they are just more vocal than non-racists

If I see a youtube video featuring a black person, I dont make a comment about how i am accepting of all races. But I guess racists feel the need to express their racism, while non-racists don’t express their non-racism.

Why would a non-racist person go on the net and act racist? That makes no sense.

Agreed

I think that’s part of it anyway. I also think it just depends where you’re at. For a similar example – Any time I look at a political article on Yahoo, the comments filled with hateful right-wingers. But, if I read the same type of story on MSN I’ll see tons of hateful liberals.

I meet more cool people on Xbox live than racists or homophobes, they’re just not as vocal. Vocal minority I guess.

Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.

Racism is alive and well, words aren’t in and of themselves racist/xenophobic, attitudes are. Sonnen’s attitude falls in line with that. (The only difference between racism and xenophobia is whether or not they’re here or there).

Truck

I believe you’ve got the “racism doesn’t exist because people are aware of it” syndrome. A great example of it are “non-racist” supporters of a certain states anti-immigration law (that shall remain nameless due to the probable inflammatory response). People will argue that it’s not racist to potentially violate the freedoms and rights of legal citizens for the “greater good” of removing illegals.

Racism exists and it’s still rampant. Just because some people set the bar low as to what qualifies, doesn’t mean that the issue isn’t alive and well.

If you objectively look at the things Sonnen has said, you can’t say that his comments don’t qualify as bigoted at the very least. If you can’t see that tons of people buy his line of rhetoric (or at least don’t find a problem with it) then you’ve got your eyes shut.

First off all, you have to look at the methodlogy of the "survey"

The question wasn’t "Do you like interracial marriages, it was “Would you be fine with a family member marrying someone from another racial group”. Quite the different question.

I know a few people (Black, Hispanic and White oh, and Asian) who have no problem with interracial marriages but still have very bigoted views about other races. The logic is, if your family member is getting married, then they must be in love.

But I’ve read studies how the increase in interracial marriage has been composed largely of marriages between Asian and Whites(specifically Asian women and White Men). This is because Asians, as a whole, are considered to be more “white” than hispanics and blacks

Why would it sound as anything outher that "I wouldn't do it myself"

Cuz that’s what it means. In addition, most people don’t approve of things they don’t do. You can “not approve” of something and that still not be a negative thing.

We won't find out the answer to that until someone takes him out of the first round.

this is true

but the “i don’t agree with the gay lifestyle” is bullshit. Seriously, what is it about the lifestyle that bugs you? is it the man on man sex or everything else? Because if its man on man sex, then you’re saying you don’t like gays. If its everything else…well, i don’t approve either. Sex and the City sucks.

And not agreeing with man on man sex doesn’t mean you don’t like gays as people. That’s a Mr. Fantastic level reach there.

See you're being literal

If you’re gay, cool, do what you like. Me personally, I don’t agree with the man on man sex. And since the epicenter of being gay is same sex intercourse, not agreeing with that is, in turn, not agreeing with the lifestyle.

It’s much more simple to say “I don’t agree with the lifestyle”. And people can infer from that what they will.

Why would I disown my son?

However, my son being gay wouldn’t make me agree with the lifestyle anymore than I did before. Certainly wouldn’t love him any less.

And that proves the point about the survey. Most people, despite levels of tolerance, will tolerate things within the family while still having the same feelings towards the greater whole. They mentally justify it as that person being the exception that proves the rule.

It’s strange that people have tolerated Chael to this degree. I do find many fo his comments to be humorous, but content aside there’s a point where the sheer volume of talk to someone who isn’t responding makes you look like the silly one.

I’m also not a fan of his comments about Anderson’s business sense – they lack relevance since I’ll be watching the fight anyway, nor do I care about his lack of sponsors. He disparages Anderson publicly about things he is not doing like – explaining to the public why you are fighting another person. First, it’s not a necessity – this is sport (reason enough), and the champion generally doesn’t get to choose his fights anyway. Secondly, Chael is just trying to demonstrate how smart he is by explaining the concepts, but it’s an awkward situation to get into that in front of the mic/camera – it should remain behind the scenes. For example – pop stars don’t have to explain why they do the things they do, and the public likes it or they don’t – end of story.

The other part of it is that by acknowledging the business side so directly, along with taking his trash talking to such an outlandish level vs. a non-responsive opponent – he makes it very uncomfortable for someone like me. I still prefers the sport/competition aspect despite valuing the pro-wrestling/spectacle aspect to a lesser degree.

Basically – this whole situation with the poorer/less skilled fighter lecturing the richer/superior fighter is ridiculous. I can’t wait to see Chael get smoked and get sent to the undercard where noone will ever hear from him again.

Yeah, instead they’re just looking for a sound byte. If one guy talks and the other won’t I guess the better man is the one who talks regardless of what he’s saying. I remember Franklin stammering to Anderson after receiving one of those unsatisfactory answers, trying to feed him a line that he was obviously planning to write about.

Pretty sad stuff if the media thinks they’re important because they’re the independent voice/watchdog to call people out. Well, not these ones.

Seems like this "1 white male" thing is becoming a trend--

I, 1-caramel-coloured male (mexican/black/italian) and 1-female (italian/pregnant) want to see Anderson send his fist down Sonnen’s suckhole. The man is touching down onto sensitive areas, hence the racist outcry by some posters. If Sonnen wants to sell tickets, he’s definitely doing it right. MMA needs characters to build the entertainment brand, having dull characters conducting interviews and spewing the same: “he has never fought a fighter like me; we can stand or go to the ground” rhetoric is growing tiresome. This is the only UFC match I have been really into, and eagerly awaited, since Rampage-Evans.

Mainly because I pull for African-American fighters. In the case of Rashad Evans, I just want to see his goofy, uncharismatic self to hit the canvas or cage surface each time he steps into the octagon.

You’re conveniently leaving out the part where Snowden called us racists. No rational person is defending Chael’s comments. But Snowden seems to revel in bashing the entire MMA fan base as being a racist group.

Cause you haven’t posted that. None of that impugns all MMA fans. It doesn’t even attack a majority of fans. It says:

  • There’s a market for racist shit because racists exist
  • Racists probably don’t like some dark-skinned dude
  • Sonnen might get some asshoels to go along with his bullshit

Which part of that is INCORRECT, let alone impugning you or me?

I already backed it up. Snowden wrote an entire article called “Why Do Fans Hate Anderson Silva,” and his first two reasons were “nationality” and “race.” In that article, he also said that racism played no small part in Andy’s failures in the marketplace. Now, he posts another article saying that Sonnen’s racist rhetoric may “make him a hero” in the eyes of fans.

Despite the above, you apparently think I’m crazy for drawing the conclusion that Snowden thinks MMA fans are racist.

All this talk of heroes and heels and pro wrestling is a distraction

…because they’re ACTUALLY going to fight. We’re not going to decide who the intercontinental backyard champion is on the basis of who is or isn’t more likable. We’re not going to decide who would be more acceptable to the fans and then choose this person.

So who gives a shit?

Are we having all of this contrived discussion because Anderson is such a heavy favorite and nobody can think of a reason for Chael to win?

I have to wonder what would happen if Anderson does a highlight reel finish on Sonnen as far as how MMA fans perceive him. MMA fans are fickle, and a finish here by Anderson may remove some ill-will towards him. After the Forrest Griffin fight, MMA fans were back on the Anderson band wagon, but recent performances has made that wagon lighter.

I think that you’re reaching a bit with the assertion that Chael genuinely believes his shtick and wants to be the “knight in shining armor.” But in the grand scheme of things, does it really matter what Chael personally wants or believes? His motives aside, all the talking he is doing has created a buzz around this fight that otherwise would not have existed.

People know who Chael Sonnen is now. Had he kept quiet this whole time and not unleashed some of the most ridiculous, over-the-top trash-talk, no one really would have cared about the upcoming bout.

I think Chael’s motives boil down to something much simpler: to create attention. I doubt he cares whether the fans consider him a hero, villain, or just a loudmouth. Anything is better than being just another “who?”.

Ignored comments

So I’m just going to say what I have thought since reading the article: Who cares. Whoever fights, they have a job to sell it like hell. Anderson Silva hasn’t really ever sold fight, hence most of the PPV buys that have him as a headliner have been mildly low. Insert someone that can talk up a storm (Chael Sonnen) and you have a chance to actually gain something from this. I would not be surprised of this card hits over 750K buys because of that guy.

Do I think Sonnen is a jackass for being a bigot republican? Yes. Do I think he’s doing a hell of a job selling the fight? Absolutely. Do I hope he wins? Yep, because I’d cheer my ass off and hope that Silva goes to a different weight class. But we’ll see.

I'm a bit confused about Snowden's views

Regarding the Portuguese is just a little better than Pig Latin comment, Snowden writes, “It was the least ambiguous attack yet, making it clear that his opponent’s nationality was a major issue with Sonnen.” This suggests that Sonnen is himself bothered by the fact that Silva speaks Portuguese, because Sonnen himself doesn’t like that language.

However, Snowden also writes, “Sonnen actually believes his xenophobic banter will make him the hero, not the heel.” This suggests nothing about Sonnen’s own views; rather, it suggests that Sonnen thinks his remarks will encourage fans to support him.

It seems to me that Snowden is claiming both that Sonnen believes his own remarks vis-a-vis Soares, Portuguese, etc. and that Sonnen believes that fans will like him for these views.

But does Sonnen also believe that he’s beaten every champion? That he’s never been defeated at middleweight? I bring this up because I think these remarks provides some evidence for the claim that Sonnen is heeling it up, that he’s saying things not because they’re his heartfelt beliefs but because he wants to piss Silva and Silva’s fans off, that he wants people talking about him, etc. Of course, I may be entirely wrong, but I think Snowden at least needs to address why Sonnen has said some things about himself that he knows to be false, if it’s not part of a heel persona.

(As for the pygmy remark, what does Sonnen even know about pygmies or religious practices in Brazil? How many American MMA fans who would be delighted by what Sonnen says think of Brazil as a bunch of savages or even know what pygmies are anyway?)

Well god bless Chael Sonnen for trying to get people to care about this fight. Hell…he’s main eventing against a guy who basically took a giant crap all over his last paying audience. I’m sure Sonnen doesn’t want to be remembered for main eventing in the least viewed ufc ppv of recent times, so he’s doing what he’s gotta do.

Nevertheless, its not enough for me. I don’t really care for Chael Sonnen….and these days I could care even less for Anderson Silva. I won’t be ordering UFC 117. I recognize I could be missing a hell of a show. The undercard looks strong, and if Silva decides to fight this time, he’s certainly more than capable of knocking Sonnen out in spectacular fashion. But I just can’t justify to myself spending one dime on a Silva-headlined show. And if he puts on another dancefest, I can only pray that Dana has the balls to stick to his word and can him.

The undercard looks nice, but if the main event turns out to be an abomination then that’s pretty much all that I, or anyone else, will remember (see ufc 112).

You just need to drink more while you watch the fights.

If you had the necessary alcoholic supplements, you wouldn’t take this stuff so seriously.

Now me, by the time the main event comes around? I’m in my underwear chasing the cat around with a spatula screaming at the top of my lungs.

Which makes the Hooters waitresses pissed.

As a Black man, I'm ashamed to say that

it took me several years to realize that Marc Mero(witz) was not a Black man or even mixed, but an overly tanned Jew.

Talk about SHOCKER

Cardio - The BIG question. Does Shane Carwin have cardio? He's never gone past the first round. His muscle mass is astounding and we all know that with all that muscle comes a need for the heart to pump fresh oxygenated blood to keep them from building lactic acid. He does train up in the thin air of Colorado, so that can't do anything but help. However, we have seen him pretty winded after a 1st round fight. Adrenaline dump or cardio problems? We won't find out the answer to that until someone takes him out of the first round.

Snowden you're the only guy

who tries everything to keep bringing up the “race card” just to get more attention..

Now you incessantly brag about it saying “yeah, I caused a little stir.” Hmm.. dude you’re just a blogger.. one of the bloggers on a website which doesn’t and can’t do any reporting on its own and survives by taking articles and sources from all the other MMA sites.

Dude, you’re a typical North American who just can’t see past colors, Anderson’s jiving and tango is what turned fans away from him. He brought it all upon himself.

Dare you to prove me wrong in anything I’ve said..

by griffith9 on Jul 29, 2010 2:26 PM EDT reply actions

Dare you to prove me wrong in anything I’ve said..

That’s fairly easy.

First, Snowden isn’t just a blogger. He wrote what is probably the best MMA book ever written.

Anderson didn’t have fans when he was destroying people in the first round, so clearly his “jiving and tango” isn’t the main issue of why he doesn’t have fans.

ALL OF YOU LISTEN TO MEE, DON'T DISTURB HERE, I WILL CALL POLICE CATCH YOU, DON'T COME TO MY BANGOLOW HOUSE, UNDERSTAND, O.K. I HATE ALL OF YOU.

"I am going to burn your fucking house down, but you will blow me first"

by Barack Lesnar on Jul 29, 2010 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

That line cracked me up

If “griffith9” is willing to accept that a “typical North American” can’t “just can’t see past colors” then what is his issue of Snowden claiming the part of Silvas marketability is based on the fact that “typical North American(s)” can’t “just can’t see past colors” ?

Totally inconsistent.

Someone on the Huffington Post thinks a Republican is racist? This is news worthy?

I can’t believe we’re analyzing trash talk here. This is all theater, meant to entertain and ultimatley get the person listening interested enough to buy the product. This kind of talk talk made Muhammad Ali one of the biggest stars of all time. It got Rampage and Rashad over one million PPV buys. And it’s getting Snowden some awesome page views.

These stupid pieces about xeno & homo -phobias and racism are getting old. I usually just lurk, but I’m sick of seeing them on the front page. The discussion they provoke isn’t exactly changing things. Let’s leave these kind of charges to the organizations typically responsible for them.

Sonnen is hitting the target, which from what we have seen here the last couple weeks is not that hard to do. Of course he’s going to choose insults that will get a rise out of Silva, that’s the whole point.

If MMA bloggers are losing their sh*t over making kindergarten insults about someones language, I imagine it may be having an effect on Silva and his team.

We have HuffingtonPost now set up as a resource for info on the MMA world? Anyone who disagrees with the liberal agenda is by definition a racist over there, ferchriesakes.
