Not a lot of action in MMA's toughest division in July. But August will change that when #2 Jon Fitch finally gets to rematch #3 Thiago Alves at UFC 117.
That bout is likely for a title shot, although the winner will have to wait until 2011 because #1 Georges St Pierre and #4 Josh Koscheck are busy coaching The Ultimate Fighter and won't meet until the end of the year.
#5 Nick Diaz, Strikeforce champ and the top ranked welterweight outside the UFC is currently serving out his suspension for his role in the post fight brawl at the last CBS Strikeforce show. He's currently cooking up a YouTube feud with middleweight Jason "Mayhem" Miller that may or may not come to anything.
#6 Dan Hardy looks to get back to the top against #15 Carlos Condit at UFC 120.
#7 Martin Kampmann will welcome #11 Jake Shields to the UFC and back to the 170lb division at UFC 121. The winner is likely to be fast tracked to a title shot.
#9 Matt Hughes and #20 Ricardo Almeida will face off at UFC 117. Win or lose, Hughes is on the senior circuit and won't be challenging GSP anytime soon. If Almeida wins, he could very well find himself in the hunt.
#10 Paul "Semtex: Daley racked up a win in Australia at Impact FC: The Uprising Sydney. He'll fight again on September 11 for Texas-based Shark Fights. That is IF the Canadian authorities ever decide whether or not to suspend him for punching Josh Koscheck post-fight at UFC 113.

I'd like to see Matt Serra higher.
The time off really killed him. But a 1-1 record with GSP and a close loss to Matt Hughes seems to be pretty damn good. A win over Lytle has got to at least set up a fight with a current top 5, no?
Especially considering two of them won’t fight each other.

I’d love to see Serra/Paulo Thiago.

That would be fantastic
Even tho he was whupped pretty good by GSP the second time, I really liked the way he hung in there. I have rarely seen guys do the turtle up then roll to guard like he did in that fight. I want to see how he hangs with guys who weren’t the two prior champs.
Thiago or Kampmann/Shields loser would work for me.

"guys who weren’t the two prior champs"
Got me thinking…
Prior / current WW champs still active at WW in the UFC:
Serra,
Hughes,
GSP
Prior / current LHW champs still active at LHW in the UFC:
Mauricio Rua,
Lyoto Machida,
Rashad Evans,
Quinton Jackson,
Forrest Griffin,
Tito Ortiz,
Randy Couture,
Vitor Belfort (last fight was technically at LHW)
Chuck Liddell
Interesting idea
Heavyweight
Lesnar
Mir
Minotauro and Carwin were interim champs tho.
Lightweight (fairly new)
Penn
Edgar
Sherk
Middleweight (also fairly new)
Silva
Seems like if you like defending your title, don’t fight at LHW

Nick Diaz hasn't defeated anybody of note at WW aside from Zaromskis
He hasn’t even had a noteworthy fight at WW in the last 4 years…
Where is Zaromskis now?
Why is Diaz number 5?
I love watching the guy fight, but that BS is THE worst thing in the ranking of any weight class. A guesstimate of how good he is despite the fact that he hasn’t defeated any wrestlers ever (in a wrestler heavy division) makes no sense to me.

I don’t agree that he should have to beat fighters of any particular style to be high-ranked—I think beating high-ranked opponents of any style suffices—but otherwise you’re right on.
I don't think he should either...
but if they are basing it on a guesstimate, what is the basis for the guesstimate?
That should certainly be green.

It is very complicated...
but it mostly due to the fact that Shields hasn’t fought a WW for quite a while and not all of the rankings used for this compilation rank him at all.
I should never comment on rankings posts.
It must be complicated because everything after Koscheck makes no sense to me. I don’t know where to start, so I won’t. P.S. I know I’m gonna catch hell for this.
Nah - we all know the rankings are irrelevent
And based on some combination of lifetime achievement, inertia, wishful thinking and bullshit…

Ben Askren and Dan Hornbuckle made the list...
They are both chasing Lyman Good in Bellator. Why didn’t he make the list?
he's missing a key ingredient
hype.
two actually — Hornbuckle beat a ranked opponent in Akihiro Gono, and Askren beat Hornbuckle.

diaz should not be that high he was was mid teir fighter in the ufc. i know that was a long time ago and he has gotten better but so has everyone eles in the ufc. Anthony Johnson was suppose to be the next big thing now he cant make weight. i am one of the guys who may have over stated his impact on the ww division.
Id like to see Serra ranked higher and I wonder were Lyman Good would rank if he beats Askren
