Quote of the Day: Jake Shields Says UFC Put No Pressure on Him to Fight at Welterweight

Photo via Sherdog.com

"I was pretty undecided the whole time. I just wanted big fights, and I know GSP is tied up with the Koscheck fight, so I was thinking maybe going to 85 since my weight's already up.

"They called and asked if I wanted (Martin Kampmann) at 70 and I said sure. They didn't give me any pressure; they gave me the option. Some people were saying I was forced to go down, which certainly wasn't the case. They said I could fight at either weight, but they offered me a fight at 70, and I was like I might as well jump and take it."

--Jake Shields talks to MMA Weekly Radio.

Joe Silva has said he’ll never tell a fighter what weight to fight at or to fight hurt. This is consistent with that.

well, unless it’s a completely justifiable situation like making Zombie James Irvin go back up to 205.

also heard that Volkmann was offered the option of getting cut or cutting to 155, but that’s just hearsay

That's different

Same thing happened to Kimbo – if you stink/look like shit at a weight, then Joe will say “we don’t want to see you there again, but we’ll give you a chance here if you want it”

yeah, it’s really not an issue. i didn’t mean to disagree with you, just nitpicking about the word “never”

The initial talk was about fighting at MW until GSP was available sometime next year.

When Silva and Dana made it clear that this wasn’t Strikeforce and that he wouldn’t walk right into a title shot in any division, that idea probably went away pretty quickly.

Ironically

Vitor was handed a title shot with no fights in any UFC division.

He still had a win in the UFC.

I don’t think Dana will give anyone a title shot right away except for pre loss Fedor.

I wondered why people bought the 2nd part of the original message when the first was proven wrong. Originally it was “Shields is signed and the UFC said he’s at 170”. It came out the next day that he WASN’T signed at that point, so I just threw out the 2nd part of the rumor accordingly. I guess others didn’t.

I think the keyword is that he said they gave him "options".

I think the UFC doesn’t want it’s big names sitting around collecting dust either.

I think they gave him an option of 70 or 85 and showed him the possible fights and scenarios and he chose 170 as being the best path for his UFC career.

Nothing wrong with that.

Is this shocking or something?

What’s with the drugstore cynicism? Like a lot of guys in Cesar’s camp, he’s genuinely interested in fighting the best. Shields has been asking for the GSP fight for YEARS, even while signed with other organizations. I doubt, as the jaded fanboy narrative might go, he was influenced by Dana holding 42 virgins and the grace of God to move down to 170 instead of 185.

Much more interesting matchups at 170 anyway, although I’ve long believed Shields may not even get to GSP.

i see shields losing this fight

should be real competitive but i think kampmann picks him apart on the feet and has enough ground skills to create a stalemate on the mat

We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!

by milk72 on Jul 28, 2010 4:09 PM EDT reply actions

It's possible.

It could play out that way, but I still have to look at Shields as having an edge though.

by truck on Jul 28, 2010 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Kampmann ruined Condit’s crossing over, he could definitely do the same thing to Jake. Should be a great fight either way.

by MMAussie on Jul 28, 2010 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Although I am leaning towards Shields taking this fight, I would never count Kampmann out. I was definitely undermining his grappling skills coming into the Paulo Thiago fight, then I was astonished to see him out-grappling Paulo by a large margin.

I think defensively, Kampmann will be able to hang with Shield’s offensive grappling. But I can see Shields getting the mount again and controlling the entire fight. Kampmann is also a great offensive submission artist and with that, is naturally has good submission defense.

Striking wise, I think Kampann has the edge; but will not be able to put Shields away quickly. If Shields survived twice against two power-shots that rocked him, from Hendo, then he definitely won’t go to sleep here. This will give more than enough time for Shields to take this to the ground and wear Kampmann out.

Shields by Unanimous Decision.

Shields was lucky he woke up when he hit the mat in that first round against Hendo,

I’m on the fence on this fight, Shields almost got subbed by Mayem and I don’t think he’s any better on the mat than Kampmann, you know what fuck it I’ve never seen Kampman get own on the mat and I’m not seeing it now, Kampmann by UD

That’s a good point. But I’ll give Shields, actually, I’ll give both fighters the benefit of the doubt because both, at one point in the past, have surprised and impressed me.

Jake Shields coming for Rich Franklin's title

… as UFC’s best company man.

between the contract value, bi-divisional availability & the line “…and I was like I might as well jump and take it.”, this man is making a serious run at Rich Franklin’s unofficial title.

Shields and his camp need to go to business school...

I dont know the details of his contract, but it seems like he cost himself all of his bargaining power by basically saying he wasnt going to return to SF while he was technically still under contract.

SF cut him and I assume Zuffa could offer just about whatever they wanted because Shields had no other legitimate options at that point.

And Nick Diaz… What a talent. But wins over Frank/Zaromskis/Smith/ and Mach could have been wins over 4 top 15 MW’s or WW’s in the UFC had he played his cards right.

I love watching him fight, but I can understand the UFC being hesitant to bring him back due to his past antics… There’s no doubt he has elite UFC level talent, and is a blast to watch.

I hope eventually Gilbert and Nick will be in the UFC, tons of interesting matchups there.

That being said, It is pretty cool that a few months back, their camp had 3 of the 7 SF titles. Reminded me of Pat’s crew in Iowa when Timmy/Highes/and Jens all had UFC gold.

I’m pretty sure any money lost by the negotiation will be made up for in sponsorship money that can be made for the UFC. Especially because it would be very unlikely for SF to put him on CBS again (if they ever get back on CBS).

He was never going to get ridiculous money from anyone, people should really stop hyping up this non-story.

by Phildo on Jul 28, 2010 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

The only reason I'd rather see him at 185

Is to give that division a much needed injection of new blood. WW is pretty damn deep as things stand, while MW is easily the thinnest division. Shields could have at least hung with the loop of contenders (Maia, Nate, Sonnen…..Okami)

by Cocytus on Jul 28, 2010 4:30 PM EDT reply actions

It's funny that you see it that way because a lot of people see it the other way around

I agree that WW is pretty deep but the fact that GSP has beaten Fitch, Alves, Hardy, Koscheck most people want to see some new contenders.

Where at 185 with Sonnen, Belfort, Wand, and others emerging as new contenders to Anderson Silva.

by bigdmmafan on Jul 28, 2010 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Belfort is still totally untested at MW and he’s going straight into a title fight so it doesnt do much for the division. Wand….I’m not sold on him like I was during his Pride run. His age and damage are catching up. He’s been winning by decision over people he should be running over.

by Cocytus on Jul 28, 2010 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Bisping just doesn't go away quietly...

Hendo gave reason to believe he would, but he hasn’t been put away aside from that.

I hope that Wand was just a little cautious in that fight because he wasn’t sure how the weight cut would effect him. The fact that he still had juice afterwards should meen a faster paced Wand next time around.

He said pretty much the same thing to MMANews a week ago:

Shields, who was the Strikeforce 185-pound champion, will make his debut in the 170-pound division in the UFC against top-ranked fighter Martin Kampmann, but says that he would have fought at either weight class. "I told them that I wanted to fight at both weights. They called and offered me this fight [with Kampmann] and I said sure."

Speaking more on the decision to fight at welterweight as opposed to middleweight, Shields continued, "I’m sure I could have fought middleweights [if I wanted to]. There wasn’t any pressure from the UFC to fight at 170 pounds. They asked if I wanted to fight Kampmann and I said yes. It’s a big fight card [UFC 121] so I thought it was a good fight to drop down. Had they offered a middleweight, I would have took that fight too. This is a big opportunity for me to go out there and showcase my skills."

by smoogy2 on Jul 28, 2010 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

GSP has cleaned out 170

GSP has already beaten Alves, Fitch, Hughes twice, Hardy, Serra, Kos soon to be twice….about the only top guys he has not faced yet are Kampman, Hathaway and now Shields. I mention Hathaway because he is unbeaten. The Kampman/Shields winner will get a shot at the title.

At 185 though we have left just Vitor and maybe Wandy after and if he beats Leben who looked good in his last two fights. Anderson is not unbeatable he has 4 losses with one BS loss to Okami. When he got heel hooked it was late into a fight that he was not winning. Even the announcers said just before it happened that Anderson would need a KO to win the fight. He was beaten in his 3 real losses by Karate fighters and Vitor trains with Lyoto’s Dad.
