Really hoping this is on HDNET and aired like the Dream cards where we get to see every fight

by SplitBreast on Jul 28, 2010 3:15 PM EDT reply actions

this is a nice little card

Better/deeper then many of SF cards or ultimate fight nights.

Awesome card for a regional promotion :)

by dreamers_12345 on Jul 28, 2010 3:29 PM EDT reply actions

yeah, but usually it’s just the top 2 or 3 fights that have the UFC-castoff type guys, designed to draw a few more eyeballs on to local/regional fighters.

can you even really call it a regional promotion anymore when damn near the whole card is guys who are multi-promotion veterans who have fought around the world? instead of just 2 or 3 names headlining to draw attention to local fights

It’s a regional promotion. They’ve never left Amarillo. Who fights on your cards doesn’t define what kind of promotion you are. MFC is regional too, even though it has lots of big names and a TV contract.

Still Technically Regional, but

They have left Amarillo. Been to Odessa once, and Lubbock (Texas Tech) several times.

by grizzlyatoms on Jul 28, 2010 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

what about Dream? they’ve never left Japan, which is smaller than Texas

Paul Daley is going to be fighting

the promoter at the end of the night because he’s not going to have enough money to pay all of them after the show.

Apparently, Shark Fights has some investors with deep-pockets because the president of Shark Fights, Brent Medley, is saying that they already have the money to cover the cost of the show (which includes fighter salaries).

by KAN0 on Jul 28, 2010 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Big money.

Am I the only one who thinks this is stupid for Shark Fights? I understand the thought of putting big names of fights. But none of these guys are enough names to sell enough PPV’s to make it worth their while. Why not have half of these guys on one card, backed up with a lot of good regional talent, then have the other half on their next card. Stacking a fight card with 6-8 fights who probably are making a decent fight purse, only to have not that many people see the fights sounds like a recipe for bankruptcy to me….

This is the only time I will ever say I'm happy to be in Amarillo...

But man, I’m really loving Shark Fights nowadays. I went to their first few shows and wasn’t too impressed. Too many mismatches in addition to Shannon The Cannon being on the card just put a bad taste in my mouth. But they’ve really stepped up their game the last few shows. Got to see Pee Wee vs. Don Frye. Gerald Harris KO Nissen Osterneck in something like a minute. And T.J. Waldburger (new UFC signee) in a 3 round grappling battle with Pat Healey. But this card is pretty epic. I’ve heard rumors that the promoter’s wife has had cancer for a while and that he’s been trying to sell the promotion. I hope this isn’t some sort of weird one-off cash grab. I need me some Shark Fights, and I want it to stick around for a while. Hope all you guys get to watch on HDNet. Plus, I wouldn’t mind meeting The Voice.

BTW, this is my first post. Been lurking around here for a while, thought it was about time to introduce myself.

Sadly is Wife did pass VERY young (in her 30’s). I was able to meet him the last time Doug fought there as the main event, but I don’t think he is the promoter anymore.

The promotion seems to keep getting bigger and there was a nice crowd when I was there last.

Couple more wins and Brock Larson should find himself back in the big show.

You gotta pay the troll toll, to get into this boy's soul.

by WestbergIDFC on Jul 28, 2010 4:12 PM EDT reply actions

Hopefully. He kinda screwed up in the UFC. I miss him on the big show.

by grizzlyatoms on Jul 28, 2010 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t mind seeing him back, but I think it is pretty clear at this point that Brock’s role in the UFC would be as a gatekeeper. I’m not sure if the UFC needs any more gatekeepers at 170.

by Steve4192 on Jul 28, 2010 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Oops

Meant to say this earlier, but I hope they end up matching Brock with Daley. They may have been a few steps up or down from each other in the UFC, but for this show it would totally make sense.

by grizzlyatoms on Jul 28, 2010 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Clearly they’re aiming to pick up some kind of TV deal. I think I read somewhere that they are talking with HDNet.

ya, saw that too

I think they are announcing it next week

i hope so, HDNET looks like they’re grabbing all the regional shows they can…promoters would do well to take them up on that offer, the advertising pays better PPV for these smaller guys.

Glad to see Ronnie Mann getting some fights stateside.

Doug Evans will be a hell of a test for him. I still remember him stifling Roger Huerta with his wrestling for about a round and half before the Huerta finished him. Mann is MUCH smaller than Huerta and hasn’t faced many wrestling-oriented fighters.

I think Mann takes it, but Evans could steal a ‘octagon control’ victory if he brings the right game plan and a full tank of gas.

WOO HOO! Just found out I’ll be able to go to this one. I have a Triathlon that morning in Conway, AR, but I’m jumping in my car right afterwards and driving the 8 hours to get there in time to corner Doug.

Holy Crap!

I just noticed Pee Wee at the bottom of the card.

I hope this means he has come to some kind of settlement with Bellator.

by Steve4192 on Jul 28, 2010 5:41 PM EDT reply actions

He hasn’t.

This would be even better if “Shark Fights” weren’t a pretty crummy name for a promotion.

by JRN on Jul 28, 2010 5:56 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe they’re hoping to swing a deal with the Discovery channel. Would fit in perfectly during shark week.

by Steve4192 on Jul 28, 2010 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe, although I suspect that the deal might go south when they find out that the participants are humans and not sharks.

Will this be on US TV?

Or PPV or something?
