Brian Stann on MMA Nation: Rashad Evans Would Beat Jon [Jones]
This past Sunday on MMA Nation on 106.7 The Fan, I caught up with "All-American" Brian Stann as he prepares to take on Mike Massenzio at UFC on Versus 2. The former U.S. Marine Captain and I talked about the differences between MCMAP and Army Combatives, dropping to middleweight and working on his wrestling ability. We also got a sense of where he thinks his light heavyweight training partners stack up against one another. Stann goes as far as predicting Rashad Evans would defeat Jon Jones "hands down".
You can read excepts of our conversation below or listen to the entire interview here:
Stann on training with Jon Jones:
I train with Jon everyday. It's great. He's a kid. He just turned 23. He's got every physical tool you can have in this sport, so there's not a lot I can offer him there. It's more on the mental side where I try to help him out and just be a friend to him. When you're that young and that good, there are a lot of negative people that try to invade his life. But being in Albuquerque and being with Greg Jackson's camp where we all look out for each other, we're able to help him exclude himself from that. It's special to train with a guy where every move works for him. But he's still very raw. He hasn't even reached ten percent of his potential. When he learns a new move, five minutes later he is using it.
On who he believes would win a fight between Jon Jones and Rashad Evans right now:
Rashad Evans would beat Jon hands down.Rashad has been in the sport a lot longer. I think he's just now hitting his prime. He's so focused mentally on training and evolving. He's able to put all his skills together now much more easily than he used to. And his wrestling style of fighting where he continually takes someone down is the most cardio taxing style there is in our sport. Most of the time, unless it's a fight like my last fight, you have to continue to take someone down. Not many guys have the cardio or mental toughness to do that, but that's where Rashid is right now. As for Jon, he's still so young. I really hope they don't rush him, because he can really be something special in two years and be one of the top fighters in the world pound-for-pound.
On the transition from the WEC to the UFC:
I wouldn't say it had a negative impact on me. I was fortunate to be fighting in a growing organization like the WEC at the time. If you really look at my career, if I step back and look at my career objectively, it probably wasn't the best route for me to take considering that I didn't have any real training until I was out of the Marine Corps. Switching over to the UFC, I was excited. Obviously everybody always thinks that they're ready or hopes they are. But as far as going from big stage fights to smaller fights, it wasn't bad at all because I wanted to earn my way up just like every other fighter. As fighters we all understand who's earned it, who's over hyped and who's getting a free ride. And I didn't want to be one of those guys. Now I'm just grinding it out trying to improve and get back to fighting on main cards.
On what he learned from his fight with Phil Davis:
The biggest thing I learned is one, I need to cut to middleweight. And two, we talk about this a lot in the Marine Corps, I lost the initiative in that fight. Once he landed the first takedown after I stopped a few, his base was just incredible. His wrestling ability was just too much. I started thinking about what he was doing instead of focusing on what I need to do. By the second and third rounds I was just worrying about stopping the takedown rather than trying to knock him out before he got the takedown. I don't ever want that to happen again where I'm focusing on what my opponent is doing rather than myself.
More after the jump.
On fighting on the rumored UFC event in Afghanistan:Obviously I've heard the rumors about a fight in Afghanistan like everybody else. If I weren't put on the card, I would book a flight there myself and find a way to get it on it. But I haven't heard anything personally about it. I'm sure they're still in the process of working on all the logistics of it.
On training with Tim Kennedy:
It's been great. It's a really good mesh for both of us. Obviously he's a phenomenal grappler and I'm more apt to the striking part of MMA. We're cut from the same mold. He's a great guy. We both had been following each other's careers, but we had yet to meet until now. It's a relationship that I think will last a long time. He's much bigger than people realize. He's short, but he is thick...
...We met on the set of Inside MMA where we had a conversation and exchanged numbers. He came out to train at Greg Jackson's camp for a week to help me prepare for my fight as he prepares to take on "Jacare" Souza, and hopefully we get to train more and more together in the future.
On the improvement of his wrestling ability:
It's steadily improving. I'm never gonna be the caliber of wrestler that Mike Massenzio is. I could wrestle for the next ten years and I would never be able to wrestle like Phil Davis. I need to focus on as much wrestling as I can to be able to fight my fight. Four days after the Phil Davis fight I was right back in the gym solely focusing on jiu-jitsu and wrestling. And though Mike is a world-class wrestler, he's certainly not on the same level as Phil Davis.
On his weight cut to 185 pounds:
I've never done any dummy cuts. Actually, scientifically it's really bad for you, especially if you're in training camp. I started the cut back in April and got down to 205 really easy. From there is where it was slow and steady wins the race. I haven't lost any strength. Last week when I did my final session of heavy lifting I was using the same weight that I was when I was 215. And I'm faster at this weight and have better cardio now. This is a natural weight for me.

I know it sounds bad
but I just don’t believe him. Never let anyone who is not on that level tell you what that level is like. He truthfully doesn’t know what either guy would do in a fight against each other. I think its safe to say that Jon Jones is a much better fighter right now than Brian Stan will ever be. Some people just can’t deal with that shit.

Yeah, I’m inclined to think he’s sparred and rolled with them both and even seen them spar/roll with each other and thus has a pretty good idea what he’s talking about.

he's sparred w/em both
= the ability to make a valid assessment of both of their abilities and an informed opinion as to who would win in a fight, right now. it’s not like he’s armchair quarterbacking here. c’mon now

Look at it objectively
if Brian Stann knew so much much about fighting, why doesn’t it show in his fights?
Have you ever been on a team before? When there are a few tops guys on one squad, you’re going to have differing opinions of who’s better than who and at what. Not only that, this is MMA. Its not like they can go full speed in practice. They don’t even do much GnP when they spar.
What advantage does Rashad carry into this fight, other than experience?
What has he done to show he can beat a much bigger, equally athletic wrestler with a foot of reach and good striking?

I don’t, regardless of whether Stann is correct or not. Brian Stann doesn’t have the physical gifts of either Rashad or Jon, but it doesn’t mean he can’t evaluate talent. Do you think Rashad and Jon would beat Greg Jackson in a fight? Wonder what they see in him as a teacher and trainer… I’ll agree more generally that I think Jon could well beat Rashad, but it’s a moot point, not just because they won’t fight, but because they see what each other does everyday. One of Jon Jones’ more overlooked advantages, is that the things he’s tries come out of nowhere to his opponents. His bag of tricks hasn’t remotely been emptied, and meanwhile, he’s learning and getting better constantly. But attributing this statement to Brian Stann, a decorated combat veteran and proven leader of men, being so small minded as to just be jealous of Jon is way off the mark.

Yeah...
let me introduce you to some MLB, NBA and NFL talent scouts some time. Those guys are among the best in the world at evaluating talent (not that they get it right 100% of the time) and very few of them are going to be confused with an athlete any time soon.

They also don’t compete.
Michael Jordan was a terrible scout as a player and showed that he still was when he drafted Kwame Brown.

He said that Pippen was garbage and he would never play with him. The Bulls could have drafted McGrady, but Jordan thought he sucked too.

you are completely full of
shit dude….he may have said that, but he fully endorsed, and facilitated, the trade for Rodman which made their team elite. management went to HIM….look it up. crap analysis b/c he made one bad decision in Kwame Brown. Jordan is not stupid
"she told me she was on the pill." me
Why are you so hateful?
Jordan has said and done many things that would suggest he’s not the best talent scout. I’m not the first person to say this either. He once said that Michael Finley would be the greatest player ever. Because Finly beat Jordan in a game of one on one when Finley was in high school.
I never said he was dumb, just a bad scout.
But seriously, why are you so mad?

b/c you based your analysis
on one bad draft choice. he facilitated practically every move the Bulls made back in the mid 90’s..i was there, i read quote for quote. he knew what would make the team better, role players while he took the lead. to say that he’s a poor scout based on the Kwame Brown choice or b/c he may or may not have approved (haven’t found any proof to this yet, but still looking) of drafting Pippen, or that he deamoned McGrady, is weak, at best and a bad analogy on this topic.
and for the record, i hate noone, i just hate it when people say unfounded things for their own gratification (hence, people responding just for the sake of arguing)
"she told me she was on the pill." me
I could easily say the same for you.
For years, writers and analysts have questioned Jordan’s decision making and his judgment.

Christ, I already knew I was wasting my time, but thanks for clarifying that for me:)…Your statement was that only someone on that level of talent should be listened to in evaluating that level, and you’re just wrong. The second part is you making the judgement that Brian just can’t handle the fact that Jon is so talented, and so young, and is taking a shot at him here. That’s just flatly stupid, baseless garbage spewing from your pores, kid. They’re friends and training partners, and see each other fairly often. Those aren’t generally the circumstances for someone to talk shit on another fighter. And people who are the most talented are often the least sober in evaluating others or in teaching and understanding the sport. Apparently you’d have me believe that Anderson Silva, BJ Penn and GSP are the only legitimate commentators worth listening to. No one else knows what it takes to be that good. Brian’s perspective on the two is more valid than anyone else but Greg Jackson and the other trainers Rashad and Jon work with. So thanks for playing, but Chewbacca is a Wookie, and you sir, do not make sense.

I only mean when they also compete, but not at that level.
Obviously you don’t have to compete to be a good scout. But athletes who are currently competing have proven to be poor scouts.
But who cares. No one seems to actually want to understand what I mean. I don’t know what button I pressed that set everyone one off, but Christ, its easy for you guys to misinterpret and run off on a tangent, in mob fashion. I see how that is my fault for leaving it open for interpretation. Believe or not, I don’t like writing essay style comments to prevent from being nitpicked by people I don’t know anyway. You spent two paragraphs arguing against something that I never meant to say. It was all about inference. The funny part is that you were dumb enough to believe I was dumb enough to believe that only elite athletes can make valid assessments of athletes.
My only real point being that Brian Stann was wrong about this one.

You’re talking some shit there, then when a couple people debate you on it, you back completely away from all it, except for the last line two comments up, where you said you just thought Stann was wrong. You see
There you go again. I mean, i could understand if you said that Stann only says that because Rashad is a senior member of the camp and that he is a former LHW champ and so he is pushing Rashad. Instead you insinuate that Stann is being biased, why??? What does he gain from that? I see no reason for him to say something like that, unless that’s what he truly believes .
Once again
I’m not saying how biased Stann is. What I’m saying is that human nature makes being totally unbiased impossible.

your initial inference was that he wasn’t “telling the truth” b/c he was an inferior fighter to Jones, and couldn’t “deal with that shit.” you said it, that’s what sparked everything. if you had come out and said what you’re saying now, things would have gone in a different direction. go back and read your first post objectively and tell me what you get out of it.

Oh come on now Luke
he’s been posting here for a few months now, it’s hardly an advance warning. But really, he’s dropped more than enough good commentary in the past, in between talking about his questionable sexual practices.
But yeah, in terms of the reasons why he proclaimed Rashad would win I really don’t think he provided an indepth enough analysis for me to start agreeing with him. The main point he came up with was Rashad’s wrestling which I don’t think would necessarily give Jones all that much of a problem. Stann also mentioned how physically taxing Rashad’s style is, but he doesn’t mention that Rashad is usually himself the one that suffers in the later rounds.

What advantage does Rashad carry into this fight, other than experience?
Well, for one thing he puts his striking and grappling together much better than Jones does at this point. For another, he’s got better defense on the feet and he doesn’t leave limbs hanging out on the ground. Of course, all that comes from the experience.
Catapultam habeo. Nisi pecuniam omnem mihi dabis, ad caput tuum saxum immane mittam.
Good interview, but Rashad is definitely not going to fight Jon Jones anytime soon, I think he is going to lose to Shogun if that fight ever happens and then he will be rematching Rampage after Page loses to Machida.
Why the hell would they bother with a Rashad/Rampage rematch?

I think its safe to say that Jon Jones is a much better fighter right now than Brian Stan will ever be. Some people just can’t deal with that shit.
What does it even matter that Jones may be a better fighter than Stann?? I’m sure we can conclude that Evans is better than Stann too, so what?! Stann still rolls w/them both and has more knowledge about their potential abilities than you or i.

You may try just disagreeing with the guy. To suggest that he just jealous or not talented enough to have an opinion is a direct statement (whether you think so or not) that you think you know better.
It was extremely tongue in cheek and to a slight degree true. If he full out fought the two of them, what he said would have much more weight. 99% of all people, on some level, are jealous or envious of those at the top. Even if it is to a slight degree or manifested as a competitive drive.

I would take Rashad over Jones at this point. I think Rashad is scared of Jones.. when Jones was guest on MMA Live a few weeks back, Rashad did a “no we won’t fight because we’re teammates” routine, and when the question for the panel at the end was if Jones would get a title shot within the next year, Rashad was like “well that depends on who’s champion”. Nice Interview
Although fighters might not necessarily be best at determining who’s going to win a fight (they tend to be biased toward established fighters — I’m guessing a study of Sherdog “Ask the Pros” polls would bear this out), if you train with someone you do gain first hand information that others, who don’t train with that person, don’t have. Whatever you think of Rashad, I think it’s somewhat revealing that he’s so confident that Rashad would beat Jones. I’m going to take this as yet further evidence that the Jones – Janitor line is mispriced, just because I can.

I’m thinking maybe he’s just trying to be a nice guy by picking the one with far more experience and credentials in the game. If he’d said he’d think Jones would dominate Rashad, that would be much more disrespectful, right? Or maybe he’s just better friends with Rashad.. anyway, personally I wouldn’t give too much thought to what Stann is saying here, when they’re this close I think there’s too much politics involved to count on getting an honest answer. Just my two cents..

Good point
if he had come out and said that the young inexperienced cat would take it that would make Rashad look bad. Even if he said it would be close that would still not come off too good for a veteran like Rashad. He did keep bringing up how Rashad is more experienced, and Rashad has been doing it longer etc.

Yeah
I just came out and said something wild to say it, but he summed up exactly what I was thinking.

I like how no one can believe that Rashad would beat Jones
I know everyone is on Jones’ dick (and I like the guy) but their hatred for Rashad blinds them.
Cause there's only one, and that's me
You understand? for all that fighting, you understand
That sucka think he good, that sucka think he can whoop me
And i know he can't whoop me, Ay boy, the n**** whole style is chump

I like Rashad
I think he’s a great fighter. I just think Jones would beat him.

I really think it’s less the hatred of Rashad than the irrational love of Jones that’s flying around the internet. The kid is good and he shows potential, but people just can’t seem to see that he’s got a ways to go before he puts it all together.

For me it has much more to do with one thing...
Rashad Evans comes dangerously close to losing a lot of fights that seem to be wrapped up. He just never really seems to close things out definitively, and leaving your opponent in the fight either physically or mentally is a bad idea.
It looked like if Rampage hadn’t struck out on his three follow up punches that Rashad was going to be sleeping, and it also looked like Thiago Silva was dangerously close to wiping him out after getting dominated the entire fight.
It’s just extremely difficult for me to pick a guy that seemingly looks to lose fights he’s winning against a guy that wants to show you a magic trick.

Yeah, but it is a lot easier to look dominant against Stephan Bonnar and Brendan Vera
than it is against Rampage Jackson and Thiago Silva.
Right
excpet Rashad didn’t look dominant against them either. It looked like he was only able to get less then half of his attempted takedowns, unable to hold them down, and then almost got finished in the third round.
2010 Summer of Side Boob.
I really don’t see what Rashad has to offer a much bigger wrestler who is equally athletic. On the feet, Rashad is more technical for sure; but his range is so limited compared to Jones. He throws nice, quick, straight punches, but Jones throws a front kick that reaches across the cage. I think even if Rashad gets Bones on his back, he couldn’t keep him there. He might even get swept, that would be a disaster.
The whole Wall’n’Stall tactic might not work against a guy who’s been tossing people like Jones has. Randy kept Vera pinned against the cage, Jones just tossed him. To me that says a lot about where his wrestling is.

You missed my point
It wasn’t that Rashad dominated them, it was to note that claiming that Jones has an advantage because he has looked better in his recent fights than Rashad is ridiculous when one has been fighting borderline top 20 fighters while the other has now fought five top 10 fighters in a row. Its completely apples and oranges. Of course a talent like Jones is going to look great against the Bonnars and Hamills of the world but he has yet to face anyone in the top 10; meanwhile Rashad has not had a fight against a non-contender since 2007.

I think its a toss up.
If Jones can control Evans on the ground, it could be dangerous as hell for Rashad.
On the other hand, if Rashad can stay on his feet,he may be able to outbox Jones. Rashad has some serious power and we haven’t seen Jones’ chin.

Considering how they are never going to fight i do not see why this was even asked or why people care. Props to Stann for giving his true opinion instead of a PC answer but im not sure i agree with his answer. Watching MMA Live the other week there was three LHW’s on the panel. Rashad , Bonnar , and Jones. Rashad was noticeably smaller then the two and Jones swallowed them both whole. Jones is a massiave guy and is only going to get bigger. HW is defiantly in his future. Both of his Brothers are HUGE one in the NFL and one a all american prospect in college. The guy is only going to progress and right now today i think he would give Rashad a hell of a fight. Tomorrow Rashad would have no chance.

Not only do I think Jones would tool Rashad, Vladdy could probably beat him too.

Boetsch will murder Rashad
better standup, great TD defense, book closed
I apologize for my never-ending assault on the English Language. I feel like Qui the promoter from Jade Empire...
I lean toward agreeing with Stann, though i do think that he went out on a limb with his “hands down” sentence. Jones may be bigger, but Rashad has progressed very well. There is a big difference in pulling stuff off in training and knowing the theory, and then having to pull it off in the cage. Jones has shown that he is willing to try any thing during fights, but that is probably what will bring him crashing down sooner rather than later.
Rashad by TKO Rd 3 (possibly by elbow from full mount)
You'd think he'd have a better chance with his hands up.
What a terrible boxing coach Brian Stann would be.
And then God created Saturn... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

fortunately Jones wont have to go thru Shad for the belt.
Jones would land way more in a stan up battle. He is never staionary and can connect from so many angles. Shad’s only chance would be on the floor with top control. That said Jones will be waiting for the TD attempts and will deftly shrug him off or toss his ass to the canvas.

great interview
what’s the dude gonna say? “I’m low on the totem pole on this team but IMO the young and upcoming guy can easily beat our highest paid guy.”
..!..
I want to apologize to Brian Stann
and also to Luke Thomas. Stann has done a lot of important and dangerous service for our country. In the cage, he has given us a lot of highly entertaining fights. Any slight on that would be very disrespectful. Whether serious or not, I realize that my comments could easily offend or even insult Stann. For that I am truly sorry. I don’t believe he is jealous of Jones. He seems like a real stand up guy, a good teammate and a great friend. I feel ashamed to what I said seemed so incredibly disrespectful, even though I didn’t mean it.
Brian didn’t have to take the time to interview, especially if people(me) are just going to insult or discredit him.

Naw. I ain't no punk.
I still say fuck all those guys. Really it was just two douchebags, and dropped the hammer down on one of em. I holds my ground like an oak tree. If you notice, I waited till things were dead to apologize.
I just realized why Luke was mad, even though I still think I had a point. Sometimes you just gotta say fuck it and take the easy road. After all, who gives a fuck anyway? There’s a handful of people I respect on here, the rest can suck it. You guessed it. No rubber.
I just didn’t want to insult Brian Stann personally, cause it seems like there’s a fair chance he might have read that.

Jones v Evans
Evans has been in Jackson’s camp longer than Jones. Evans is viewed as a “leader” of that camp. Jones is the “student”. Stann must back the leader of the camp. I’m surprised he even answered the question.
I really have no comment on who would win between the two, but....
The “special” thing about Jones is that he is dynamic; he is explosive and intelligent. What I mean by this is that, not only does he have the raw strength, speed and overall athleticism to pull off those jaw-dropping Wrestling, Greco-Roman and Judo throws and take downs, but he also has the guts to actually attempt them. He is intelligent enough to know this and most likely predicts that his opponents will not try such techniques.
A lot of these awe-inspiring maneuvers are deemed flashy most of the time and hence are categorized into that section called impractical. The fact of the matter is, that a lot of these “flashy” moves are actually very effective and can really do some damage. Not to say that some moves really are irrelevant because I would never, ever attempt a 540, or even worse, a 720 degree spinning kick on anybody. Unless of course a Machida type prodigy brings a deemed “irrelevant” style of classic martial arts back into mainstream MMA. Then I would gladly be wrong.
Anyways, back to the topic. The three things you need to have in order to pull off mind-blowing martial arts techniques are:
-Complete courage; no room for fear or hesitation
-Knowledge of the technique; know the proper way of execution
-Athleticism to match; make sure your body is capable!
And with the youth, athleticism and ever-growing knowledge of MMA this kid brings to the table, it’s quite easy to see why Jones is being hyped. Until of course, he gets owned by trying a super move. We will see if it happens against Matyushenko.
My guess is that his brain will register the fact that every time he thinks of trying a crazy take-down or spinning elbow, his mind will cancel out that thought. He will then precede to just trying to land a power punch and if all else fails, go for the double and just try your damn hardest to GnP the guy to oblivion and if THAT fails…meh, take the decision. A win’s a win. Oh..I think I just described Rashad. And most wrestlers in MMA.
I sure hope Jones never stops making those wonder moves.

DAMN IT
i just typed up 4 paragraphs breaking down this fight and when i clicked “preview” and after i proofread it and was satisfied i clicked backspace to go back instead of clicking “post” and it deleted everything i said….
im not typing all that shit again…so i’ll simply say:
