With His Documentary "Such Great Heights" Getting Rave Reviews, Jon Fitch Prepares for Thiago Alves at UFC 117

Photo

Ariel Helwani loves him some "Such Great Heights":

Such Great Heights does a fine job of capturing the roller coaster ride of emotions leading up to a fighter's first major title shot. And Fitch proves to be a great subject, as he comes across as a humble, focused and hard-working fighter, who has been waiting his entire fighting life for a shot at the champion.

...

So it was interesting, at least to me, to learn more about Fitch the fighter, the soon-to-be husband and the budding comedian, while stepping into his mind as he prepares for the biggest fight of his career. So captivating was the footage shot in the moments before his fight against GSP that I found myself lost in the film, completely forgetting the outcome. And once you are reminded that Fitch did lose via unanimous decision, viewers are offered a rare and emotional glimpse into what it's like to be a fighter who was just beat up for 25 minutes on the biggest stage of his sport.

And if you aren't a fan of Fitch, there is still much to capture your interest, because what makes this film stand out is the way the filmmakers weaved in a unique cast of characters who help keep the AKA wheel turning every day.

Most notably, AKA head trainer "Crazy" Bob Cook and Guerilla Jiu-Jitsu instructor Dave Camarillo play a huge role in the film. All you have to do is hear the passion in Cook's voice when he talks about how all he wants is "a homegrown UFC champion" or the emotion when Camarillo says that "this is the biggest thing" he has ever been a part of while staring at a UFC 87 poster, to understand just how close-knit the AKA team really is.

The trailer for the documentary is in the full entry.

Dave Meltzer talked to Fitch about the training he's been doing to prepare for the Thiago Alves rematch:

Fitch, 32, expects his wrestling to be at peak levels for the fight. There has been a heavy emphasis on that sport at AKA over the past few weeks, and will continue until the end of this year. Fitch is facing a striker who is hard to take down in Alves. The upcoming Koscheck vs. St. Pierre and Cain Velasquez vs. Brock Lesnar fights make the gym's big three fights for the remainder of the year all ones where wrestling is expected to be the most important component.

"The gym is filled with great wrestlers. Every Tuesday, we do a hard wrestling practice just like in college. Daniel Cormier [2004 and 2008 U.S. Olympian] runs the practice."

Fitch noted Cormier has also upped everyone's mental game.

"He came into the gym and said that nobody can take him down," he said. "He came in with that attitude even though we had guys like [2008 NCAA champion] Phil Davis and Cain."

The current wrestling practice roster also includes Fitch, who was the team captain at Purdue; three former NCAA champions in Koscheck, Davis and Mark Ellis; Trevor Prangley (former South African champion), Bobby Lashley (three-time NAIA champion and second in the world military games); and Velasquez (heavyweight All-American).

Fitch also tells Meltzer that if Josh Koscheck beats Georges St Pierre and takes the title that he will move up to middleweight rather than "break up the (AKA) gym" where Fitch and Koscheck both train.

I like Fitch and I’m really glad we don’t have to worry about him moving up to 185lbs and getting destroyed.

Crap . . . I like Fitch but why you have to do that to Koscheck? I’m laughing.

Hopefully it’s more entertaining then his matches (other than the one where he fought GSP).

by BrothaDarkness on Jul 27, 2010 3:33 PM EDT reply actions

I personally find a lot of his matches entertaining. I don’t see Fitch stalling, I see him working hard for positions and submissions against very tough opponents. If you don’t like the ground game, this may not be the sport for you.

I also admire Fitch’s work ethic and wrestling superiority. I see him giving Alves all that he can handle in this one. Rack em up again boys – this time though, Fitch via UD

Come on now guy Fitch has had some pretty boring fights. Just relax buddy the ground game is good and can be entertaining but there is a boring aspect of it as well. I’m not saying Fitch is a terrible fighter but at times he can be boring friend.

Yep.

Fitch is one of my favorites but it’d be tough to deny that he’s been in some boring fights.

I’m looking forward to catching this.

Its OK to call the ground game boring

Doesn’t make you less of a fan.

However, I truly enjoyed his fight with Thiago. Excellent tactical stuff.

by cyke on Jul 27, 2010 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but not all ground games are created equal. When some who is aggresive with their JJ is on the mat and throwing all sorts of submissions around it’s pretty fun to watch.

I didn’t mind Fitch’s work against Saunders, I thought he did some nice damage from the guard.

by TMadeBurner on Jul 27, 2010 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah he never said he doesn’t like the ground game. A lot of people find Fitch to be really boring. Just because you don’t doesn’t make their opinion wrong.

by Tats16 on Jul 27, 2010 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I never implied he hated the ground game either. Its just that its okay to call the ground game boring if you see it that way. You shouldn’t need to defend your fan status if that’s the case.

by cyke on Jul 27, 2010 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Fitch does work hard for position: octagon control. As for the ground game, its entertaining if someone is working for a position that isn’t only favorable but purposeful. I want to see him work for subs or better position to ground and pound an opponent. Not lay and pray, get stood up, setup a takedown and do it all over again. Other wrestlers such as Kos, Cain, and Munoz were able to step up there game with subs and vicious ground and pound.

They always talk about how close the fighters are and what a tight knit group they got, it’ll be interesting to see if that’s really the case.

Huh. Looks interesting. When I first heard about it, I was wondering what angle they could have taken to make what can be fairly monotonous – daily training, cardio, eating raw chicken – into something interesting, and I’m actually quite intrigued.

I wish the UFC and/or Spike would remake TUF into more of a documentary-style show along these lines. I’d rather get a serious glimpse into their training then see some asinine pranks in a “house.”

It would do as well as a serious version of Bachelor for girls where everyone has poignant discussions and it is a deep thought reflecting process on the world of dating and love.

People that actually enjoy the house scenes of TuF probably thought jizzing in sushi was the second coming of Michaelangelo.
