UFC 117: Silva vs Sonnen Media Conference Call Updates and Commentary

Photo

Be sure and join us at 2pm EST for coverage of the UFC 117 Media Conference Call. No we didn't get credentialed, but we will be following Luke Thomas' tweets from the call which he'll be covering for CBS Radio.

If you tweet be sure and follow Luke at his twitter page: MMANation

Tweets are after the jump:

Star-divide

MMANation On the #UFC117 conference call. Tweets to begin to that effect shortly.
MMANation #UFC117 call just began. Ed Soares also on the line to help translate Anderson Silva, so who knows if he'll translate properly? We'll see.
MMANation Silva on this being most anticipated UFC fight of his career: "No."
MMANation Chael: "I'm the toughest guy in the company. There's never been a guy with earings who could out-tough me. Anderson won't be the 1st."
MMANation Chael says the attention his smack talk has brought has been a distraction. "I'm a partner w/ the UFC, Silva is an employee" #UFC117
MMANation Chael basically just stayed in Portland for this fight. Trained a little with Couture, but stayed almost exclusively in Oregon. #UFC117

Kid Nate: Not sure how smart that is. Training exclusively within his comfort zone is a big part of the reason Sonnen has lost by submission so many times.

MMANation Silva on Dana White saying he could potentially cut Silva from the UFC: "He can say whatever he wants to say." Wow. #UFC117
MMANation Silva has given one word answers twice now. When asked if he's angry with the entire process he says, "no". Make that 3x. #UFC117
MikeChiappetta   Anderson Silva said about 10 combined words addressing the 4 questions he'd been asked until someone asked him about soccer. #UFC117
Franklin_McNeil   Anderson Silva seems to being showing disdain toward promoting his fight with Chael Sonnen, he's giving mostly yes and no answers.
MMAspot   Anderson says he's never had a problem with wrestlers and the Dan Henderson fight is proof.
duresportmma   Chael seems playfully angry, though. Silva seems tuned out completely. RT @lorettahuntmma: Sonnen seems angry during this #UFC117 conf call
MMANation "I don't believe in this things like sportsmanship and honor." - Chael Sonnen. #UFC117
MMAspot   Chael isn't opposed to Silva's antics. He just doesn't like him.
MMANation   "I'm going to take his belt on August 7th and Dana's going to fire him on August 8th." - Chael. #UFC117
MMANation   Silva says he's "very excited" about the atmosphere at#UFC117 given that the entire main card is all Americans vs. Brazilians.
MMANation   Remember how Silva looked disinterested and acted strangely when he fought Maia? He's doing the same thing on this#UFC117 conf call.
MMANation   Chael insults Cote and Franklin and says Silva hand picks his fight. #UFC117. Honestly, I can't tell if Chael is trolling or believes this.
usatmma   Ok, I liked that Sonnen dig about Silva fighting 'math teachers from Ohio and one-legged guys from Canada'
MMANation   Silva says some of the stuff Sonnen says is "funny".
MMANation "Of course I'm promoting this fight myself. That's the way it should be." Sonnen: media are only fans Silva has.
Franklin_McNeil   Sonnen continues to be an awesome interview, he's ripping Silva on this conference call. Silva isn't saying a word in response.
MMANation   Franklin McNeil and Ed Soares having a slightly tense moment.
usatmma   Ed Soares more animated than Silva is.
usatmma   Ed's not even bothering trying to translate the last two questions.
Franklin_McNeil   I tried to get Silva to respond to Sonnen's harsh comments. He and manager Ed Soares say they will take care of business on fight night.
UnfilteredMMA   Silva: Of course he deserves the title shot
MMANation   "No, I haven't gotten bored. I like my sport, my weight division and I'm prepared to stay in my weight division." - A. Silva.
MMANation   Chael: I could beat up Anderson in the hotel parking lot, but I want to do it in front of millions on August 7th.
SI_JoshGross   Anderson's English is getting pretty good. He & Ed Soares speak English to each other instead of Portuguese whenever possible.
MMAspot   Sonnen: Anderson is flat out scary. He's vicious and sharp. He's gonna hurt me, but I can walk through it... and leave with the belt.
usatmma   Anderson shoots down the notion of a catchweight w/GSP.
usatmma: Hm. Silva comes alive suddenly. I feel like he said a lot more than what Ed conveyed about his interest in his own division.
usatmma   Sonnen now claiming he beat Filho twice.
MMANation   Chael claims Franklin ducked him for 18 months, which explains the "animosity"...such that it actually exists.
MMANation   "The way [Chael] chose to promote the fight is not the way I try to promote the fight." - Silva.
MMANation   Silva is a very, very weird guy. Something's not right about him. RT @usatmma: @duresport You have driven Anderson into silence....
MMAspot   Anderson: People aren't paying to watch people talk shit, they're paying to watch people fight.
MMANation  Chael: "I've accomplished far more than Anderson Silva"
MMAspot   Sonnen: I've beat every champion of every company there's ever been.
MMAspot   Anderson (on changes in training camp): I started training with Steven Segal.
usatmma   Chael: 'You knew you were setting yourself up for a foreign (or did he say moron?) answer, and you got one.'
MMANation   Ok, Chael's critique of Anderson not promoting the fight properly did, in fact, made me LOL. And he called him "dummy".
MikeChiappetta   This is the most bizarre UFC press conference ever. Anderson's terse answers, Chael doing everything in his power to sell the fight.
MMANation   "I can't think of any fight where he's been out-grappled". Chael talking Silva. Um, Daiju Takase?
usatmma   Honest answer from Chael. 'I can't just command him to his back'
MikeChiappetta   Chael just said he's dominated every fight he's ever been in "including the one's I've been beaten in." Yes, he really said that!
MMAspot   Sonnen: 40-some men couldn't out-strike me. 20-something men couldn't out-grapple me. This is going to be a REAL fight.
MMANation   That wraps the call. Surreal. At the last second, Silva giggles as he thanks Chael for being on the call. What a bizarre ride.

For your first point...

When he shit talked Wanderlei for even thinking about dropping to MW, then said Marquardt and Hendo didn’t deserve to fight him again and had to fight each other, then gave Vitor a ton of shit over a handful of issues. Oh yeah, and that whole “Demian disrespected me!” thing. So that’s 1/3 of the top 15 in his division.

ehhh . . . maybe. He made one statement that was blown out of proportion. There was no harmful intention from what he said.

Who deserved to fight him, I believe that was largely Ed Soares. I don’t think Silva was too interested in facing Henderson so soon but he did state that he’ll fight who ever the UFC put in the cage.

Vitor . . . Silva largely doesn’t care to face Brazilians especially BJJ specialist. By and large there were no personal character attacks. He did train with Vitor so he felt offended and questioned where was Vitor’s loyalty.

—— I’m kind of a biased Silva fan.

Anderson

considered Vitor a friend and didn’t want to fight him for that reason, but he signed to fight him when he was presented with the contract… that’s what counts… People call me bias when I’m talking about Andy, but the fact is that people are so pissed at him that they are blinding themselves to the facts. and the fact is that he has never turned down a fight… Now, on interviews, can the guy not have his preference on who he should be fighting?

How is he dragging his feet WHEN THE FIGHTS WERE NEVER MADE OFFICIAL. The only thing that happened was Ed Soares would come out babbling on about something that no one should even have cared about, but as far as the actual fight it would always end with “Anderson will still fight them regardless.” He was never given any of these fights, if the UFC put the contract down for him he would have signed it but all of these fights were still only in the speculation phase.  Anderson was asked what changes he’s made from his last two middleweight defenses in comparison to this fight with Chael. He says he started training with Steven Segal (I think that’s a joke). Chael interrupts and says you should expect a boring answer since you asked Anderson a question. He says Anderson knows nothing about business, people want to know why they’re fighting. Anderson couldn’t have this industry more backward. He thinks people would want to pat Anderson on the back for saying "you’re training really hard" but he’s been training really hard since he was 9 years old. Everyone does that.

best comedy in MMA in forever. I feel like I’m watching WWF/E from back in the day.

Rodney Roddy Piper vs. Jimmy Snuka

Piper gave him a verbal beating. Snuka was clueless.

Ok . . . here are some sweet and simple facts.
  • Silva isn’t crazy about talking up fights.
  • Silva gives short and simply response, not to mentioned cliche answers. No one will accuse him of being as verbose as Frank Mir. At this point it is expected.
  • Silva’s interviews on Tatame or Portal Vale Tudo site are COMPLETELY different.
  • Chael Sonnen has dominated EVERY fight he has been in including his submission losses like the one against Demian Maia. FACT!

Hey man, if Chael said it, then I guess it has to be true.
The UFC really needs more guys like Frank Mir (some what obssesive but brutally honest assessment of his opponents), Chael Sonnen, Rampage (with his awkward comedic act), James Toney (simply delusional blabber-mouth), and I guess the self-aggrandizing Tito Ortiz.

I kinda like the quiet assassins

But yeah more characters who are actually decent fighters would be cool.

Nick Garcia is the Brian Russell of MLS but 10 times worse.

Yeah, but Silva is more of a quiet clown these days.

Can we get a link to a copy of the audio

I’d love to hear the whole conference call with my own ears to laugh with anticipation.

In all actuality, this will be Silva’s game face when they announce Sonnen’s name.

Here we go!

I could be wrong but after reading thru the conf. call, I think we’re gonna see UFC112 Silva all over again, it was mildly funny the first time but if he does that shit again I pray to god that sonnen takes his belt

by Takun on Jul 27, 2010 5:47 PM EDT reply actions

Sonnen is really embracing this entire thing and I love it, he’s in the exact frame of mind he needs to be in for this fight.

I cannot wait to see him put Silva out and give him the beating he’s deserved for a long long time.

Looks like Sonnen might make history twice at UFC 117, he’ll end Silva’s reign and get him fired all in one night.

The Chael love reinforces my lack of love for many MMA"fans"

Funny how “WWE antics” are pissed and moaned about with Lesnar, Rashad is called “cocky” for his shit and Koscheck is a prick, but Chael is “funny” and “great for MMA”.

Cause there's only one, and that's me
You understand? for all that fighting, you understand
That sucka think he good, that sucka think he can whoop me
And i know he can't whoop me, Ay boy, the n**** whole style is chump

So who, that isn’t trying to troll, has actually said Chael Sonnen is “great for MMA”? And regardless of that, it’s not like it’s some sort of mystery…the hate for Silva from UFC 112 is still fresh, there’s not going to be so many quick to defend Silva.

There is a large sentiment that cosigns Sonnen's behavior

There aren’t that many trolls.

I think part of it is Sonnen is doing it OUTSIDE of the cage. Those others have been criticized for in-cage antics.

I love Koscheck, Sonnen and Lesnar. Anyone with a little personality is a breath of fresh air in MMA. Every time I hear a fighter do the GSP nice guy routine I want to facepalm.

I love guys that get people riled up and pissed off. Beats the hell out of guys like Jake Shields, who no matter what just make fans shrug their shoulders.

Remember this statement

Sonnen will looks worse than Griffin did come fight time.

Damn I love Chael. He gets it.

Even if “it” ends up meaning he gets knocked into 2025 in two weeks, this has all been great fun.

I specializes in grammar fail.
