SBNation.com Exclusive Interview With Brendan Schaub

LAS VEGAS - JULY 03: (R-L) Brendan Schaub connects with a right to the face of Chris Tuchscherer that knocks out Tuchscherer in the first round during the UFC heavyweight bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on July 3 2010 in Las Vegas Nevada. David St. Martin of SBNation.com caught up with former TUF finalist Brendan Schaub to ask him questions about his time on the show as well as his UFC 121 bout with Gabriel Gonzaga.  Some highlights:

Could you tell me a little about how you and Carwin got set up together?

Shane and I first got together at Nate Marquardt's gym, High Altitude Martial Arts, about five years ago. I just showed up for jiu jitsu to get some work in. I walked in and there's big Shane, all 300lbs of him, and they said 'there's your training partner.' He's been my main training partner since day one.

I've heard that you are adamant about never fighting Carwin, is that true?

That's true. That's 100% true.

...

Do you think guys like Carwin and Brock Lesnar are the new breed of heavyweight? Or are they just anomalies and outliers?

I actually think the new breed is guys like Cain Velasquez, Junior Dos Santos, and myself. Fighters who are lighter and more athletic. I think Lesnar and Shane are just absolute freaks. I don't think you're going to see another heavyweight like either one of those guys. As big and technical as Shane is? It's something unique. I think the division is headed towards the more athletic, technical guys as opposed to these big monsters.

What do you think about fighting a guy like Gabriel Gonzaga? He's pretty dangerous on the ground, but he also wobbled Carwin with a punch. How are you approaching this fight?

For me, this is the reason I've always dreamed of fighting in the UFC. Fighting top level competition. Guys like Gabe, Randy Couture, Dos Santos, and the Lesnars. All the studs, the who's who of MMA. It's just a great opportunity for me. I'm fighting on another absolutely stacked card. The way I show my appreciation to Dana White and Joe Silva for putting me on these cards is just to put on a show. I'm just going to go out there and do my thing. I have all the tools I need to beat Gonzaga.

I can’t wait for Gonzaga to knock this guy out. Please tell that monkey Greg Jackson to not fill Schaub’s head with the idea that he belongs in the same sentence with Cain and Junior. I hope Gonzaga head kicks him and it’s as brutal of a knockout as Rashad vs. Sean Salmon. What a joke!

YEAH!

How dare he consider himself a lighter, more athletic heavyweight like Velasquez and JDS! I mean, JDS has proven SO much already! This guy should shut up and talk about how he’s not very good! YEAH!

Nice interview

1. I wish you would’ve asked about the shoulder shrug after the fight.

2. It’s couldn’t care less (directed towardsa Schaub)

3. Are Lesnar and Carwin REALLY needed to be paired up? One is big and strong, the other big and strong and fast and has cardio to go.

Cause there's only one, and that's me

Good interview

but why does he think he can mention himself in the same sentence as Cain and Dos Santos?

Insane self-confidence is a pre-req for getting into a cage fight – better that than some other mental issue that lets you get in there.

Not saying I like it, but it is understandable.

Couture himself said he would never get into the cage with someone he didn’t think he could beat – he thought no one should do that. That means that every elite UFC fighter has to see himself as the best.

Gonzaga is a great gate keeper

He is so strong, dangerous, and multi-faceted. If a guy can beat him, it shows they actually may be something. If they get eaten alive by him, it’s kind of an indication they won’t be finding success in the UFC (ie Cro Cop).

i like brandon BUT jds and cain are the elite compared to him.

roy nelson ko’d you son! and your talking about lighter and explosive fighters…i like brandon as a fighter, but to much confedence will hurt u.

“I grew up a huge Tito Ortiz fan, so it’s an honor to be on the same card as someone like him.”

I knew there had to be a good reason I dislike Schaub.

I want Kim Winslow or Tan Dan to ref Tito Ortiz' next loss.

I really have a dislike for this guy. His arrogance just oozes off of him. I understand confidence and believing in yourself is important but geez. Nelson layed him flat on his ass out cold and GG will do the same. The guy is a decent fighter but i never him as a Elite top 10 HW.

Let me get this straight, people don’t like Schaub because he described himself as one of the new breed of fighters who are “lighter and more athletic”?

by Niles on Jul 27, 2010 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

Yup

Strange as that sounds, it is so. I have no idea what is going on here. Really the guy sounds confident and in control. In all truth he just compared himself to 2 young up’n’comers, NOT two legends. I don’t see what the fuss is about. both Velasquez and JDS are about to have the toughest fights of their career and everyone could be singing a different tune by then.

PS. I was (am) also a Tito fan (yeah i know, but i also usually like the bad guy in the story) so there you go.

Bet BB wished that Farnsworth had dropped a bomb right here. It was still a good interview Brent, keep it up.
