Sarah Kaufman Gets the Last Laugh
Sarah Kaufman came in for some criticism after complaining that she shouldn't be relegated to the Strikeforce Challengers series, but it looks like Kaufman had the last laugh.
Her slam KO of Roxanne Modafferi made ESPN Sport Center's top plays of the week:
And her fight was the most-watched fight on the program, despite not being the headliner. Per MMA Junkie:
The peak audience actually came for the night's co-main event, a title fight between women's welterweight champ Sarah Kaufman and challenger Roxanne Modafferi that spiked with 254,000 viewers.
The fight actually topped the Shane Del Rosario vs. Lolohea Mahe headliner, which drew 226,000 viewers.

I think Snowden is a lot more correct than not.
I’ll try and get a post out about it. I’ve talked about it on Twitter. I also talked about it on my show last night. Kaufman did the right thing. Closed mouth don’t get fed. But Snowden’s larger points about the preeminence of ratings, the dubious nature of Kaufman’s star power HEADING INTO the fight, her own responsibility (and fantastic follow-through) to promote herself through athletic performances, the meager budget of SF to promote fighters, etc., are in now way challenged by this. In fact, it rather confirms it.
On a slow week, Kaufman had the wherewithal to give media compelling content that underwrote a lot of controversial issues. She followed through with a brilliant performance. But the ratings are what means she can pass good, collect $200 and skip jail. For an endeavor like feMMA – a certifiable ratings killer for me outside of Gina talk – women have it doubly hard to make a name for themselves and prove their worth. But what Kaufman did was set the example. She showed with some media manipulation on a slow week and athletic dominance against a real opposition she could launch herself into a larger state of fan consciousness. But what matters for promotion next time were the ratings she pulled in, not how many hardcore fans agreed with her intellectual arguments.

Gina couldn’t never made 140, let alone 135. They custom made the 145 division for Gina.
And Kaufman would chew up Gina and spit her out, no matter what weight they fought at. Too good of a grapper, and competent enough on the feet to hang with Gina. It’d be a good fight though. Kinna doubt if Gina is interested in fighting anymore now that she’s into making movies.

Gina will be to big for Sarah, and Gina isn’t bad on the ground either. Caught Young in a Gogoplata and choked out a champion grappler.
But it’s hard to discuss outcomes of fights that would never happen.

But the fact that Gina was successful on the ground with Tonya with no background in BJJ or wrestling is impressive in itself, especially considering how early it was in her career.
Look, I’m not saying Gina will beat the arguable #1 P4P female fighter in the world, however, underestimating her has been a deadly mistake that other girls have paid for. Good looks can kill.
Gina is a quality fighter, but choking out Tonya Evinger is no indicator of how she’d fair against Sarah Kaufman.
This is a pretty pointless debate though. I would be shocked if Gina Carano ever fought again. She’s gone Hollywood now. The money female MMA pays isn’t enough to even get her in the gym.

In all honesty
Does every hardcore fan think that seeing a woman gettin violently KO’d on ESPN helps the sport grow? MMA is not main stream yet. WMMA on major cards will not help the sport grow. It will give fuel to the haters of MMA. There is too much of a talent gap for it to be taken seriously. Except for the the whole “I love all MMA” crowd. Do you love all MMA really? Did you love the amputee following his dreams and making a mockery of MMA.
Next we’ll have 2 dudes paralyzed from the neck down head butting each other because they had a dream and wanted to fight MMA.
Now I will get called a sexist pig and such but the truth is that girls have the same rights as boys do. I am not going to tell a woman that she shouldn’t pursue her dreams. I would hope any legitimate org would help MMA succeed and not allow girl fights on televised cards. It hurts more than it helps at this point.
And I no what is coming so don’t try and be cool by predicting it.

I don’t really have much to say in reply to this statement, frankly I am surprised that I am dignifying this with a response. I have been a fan of MMA for nearly 8 years, since Liddell lost to Couture, but only really became a ‘hardcore’ fan since 2005 and I have to say that I will never not love this sport.
Amputees and all that crap may cheapen the sport but if you go back far enough you will see that every combat sport has had a stage like this, such as catch calling people from the crowd to fight them at fairs.
What I love to see is two able bodied competitors competing for the right to be called the best. The fact that some of them might be women never really enters my mind. I like to see professionally trained women fight each other just as much as I like to see professionally trained men fight each other.
I’ve even gone so far as to actually train in this stuff myself, particularly grappling, and I won’t lie, I have grappled women before and they have tried to beat me just as hard as I have tried to beat them. I can tell you first hand that women deserve just as much respect, if not more than, the men do.
So, for you to sit there and say that women wanting to compete is some kind of affront to the sport that we all love is not only insulting to the women that train and compete, but it is also insulting to the fans, the trainers, and the training partners of the women that you think should not be involved in something as wonderful as MMA.
Take your sexist attitude back to the fifties and learn to understand that two able bodied women competing is not the same as two paralyzed guys in a wheel chair head butting each other.

Why wait till the last sentence to call me sexist?
I told you to do it from the beginning. Go back and read my post before blindly insinuating that I compared women to paralyzed guys. You would need some comprehension to understand the point I was making. That would actually take this crazy skill called “reading!”
I can’t believe I got another post off. And don’t be mad at me because you got handled by a woman. That’s on you and has nothing to do with this conversation.
I know you are just looking for a response because it will make your e-peen that much bigger. Well, I’m going to give it to you.
There is too much of a talent gap for it to be taken seriously. Except for the the whole "I love all MMA" crowd. Do you love all MMA really? Did you love the amputee following his dreams and making a mockery of MMA.
Next we’ll have 2 dudes paralyzed from the neck down head butting each other because they had a dream and wanted to fight MMA.
This is what set me off.
If you had any skill at reading then you would know that you had yourself insinuated that women competing is like to amputees or paralyzed people that somehow don’t have a need for wheel chairs competing is the same thing. Note that I said twice ‘able bodied.’
Also, so what if I got out grappled by a woman? I know that’s what you are getting at and I will admit that you are right, I have lost to women before, but if you had any knowledge at all, and obviously you don’t train, then you would know that the main goal of training is to become a better fighter. Shit, I’ve been beaten by a 15 year old kid before, I’m new that this stuff, it’s going to happen, but I can guarantee you that I was never beaten the same way twice.
Get your head on straight and learn to understand what training is all about before you start throwing out off the cuff remarks that you think will insult me. Or maybe you spend too much time getting yelled at by your high school foot ball coach that doesn’t understand that losing means learning to listen to good common sense.
I’m done with this, obviously you just want to see the knock outs and you don’t understand the hours upon days upon years that are spent making a fighter who he or she is.
I hope your future wife loves you because not many other people will.

Note about the ratings
You’d need more specific data to determine the nature of that dip at the end of the program. Remember, Kaufman vs. Modaferri went deep into the 3rd round before the KO. If the peak occurred there, or in the replays immediately after, then you could probably make the case that people came to that women’s title fight. But if the peak happened earlier in the fight, and then the audience started decreasing before the conclusion, that would suggest the dip is due to the lack of interest in Kaufman vs. Modaferri, and can’t really be attributed to Rosario vs. Mahe. In either case, I don’t think it speaks as much to the popularity of Kaufman as much as viewer confusion/ignorance over having a title fight followed up by a three round, non-title main event. I don’t think anyone saw the graphic about a fight between two heavyweight strikers coming up next and said to themselves “I’m not into that, time to change the channel”.
More people watched Kaufman’s fight than any other fight on the card. Now people want to break it down and analyze it and say that people were actually turned off by the fight? C’mon. It was a great fight, had a great ending, got the best ratings on the card and ended up on SportsCenter. Give the woman her due already.

I think Kaufmann has redeemed herself with this performance and drew the ratings to back it up. I don’t know about before, but now she deserves to be on a main card imo, as long as they get a good opponent.
Because she couldn’t get fights at 135. She’s a natural 135, and has said as much many times. Similar to guys like Jeff Curran fighting well above their natural weight class for most of their career as well.

I'm sticking with my guns on this one
1. Where was everyone on Thursday complaining about her billing?
2. She won’t be on a regular card due to her belt. You won’t open a show with a title fight, especially female which is still a sketchy topic for a lot of people.
2a. They won’t give her co-main billing or main billing because you MUST end the show strong.
3. Seriously, where was everyone who’s complaining now on Thursday?

I think most people were upset that she was getting shat on...
and believed that she was being shat on or less valued because she is a woman.
It wasn’t about the placement as much as it was about the idea that she should shut up and take it.
i was in everett shooting a documentary of this fight on thursday becasue aol fanhouse and i thought it was a great fight to cover. Both these ladies have loads of talent, loads of personality, and for myself, these ladies represent what i love about MMA more than any other fight i have ever covered.

I thought the billing was silly, but I wasn't outraged... this is Strikeforce after all.
I was outraged that she was given flack for asking to be treated like everyone else..
Mad props to anyone who can recognize this quote
“Yeaaa women can do everything a man can do, even have adams apples”
“I dont shop uncontrollably”
“I can drive for 10 minutes without hitting something”
In all seriousness this kinda bad ass for Kaufman. She has to realize women draw less no matter the sport though.
RIP Phil Harris. I'll miss you man
