Strikeforce: Houston Preview - Jorge Gurgel Talks KJ Noons

"We're going to brawl. He's got outstanding footwork and boxing skills. I really believe KJ Noons was brought in as a hired gun to fight for the title [champion Gilbert Melendez]."

Based on past performances, I’m guessing Jorge Gurgel uses “real fighter” as a euphemism for “people who disregard their skill set and stand and bang”.

I keep hearing that Gurgel’s knees are wrecked, which prevents him from shooting for takedowns.

Ugh
You do know you have a black belt in jiu jitsu right?
I don’t know why people get so hung up on Gurgel’s belt color.
The fact of the matter is, he HAS tried using his jiu jitsu in MMA and got owned by Alvin Robertson and Cole Miller. His BJJ for MMA just ain’t that great. He’s better off standing and Wanging and collecting big fat bonus checks.
I guess that it seems so strange that his students/training partners like Dustin Hazelett, Rich Franklin, Matt Brown, etc are using the jiu jitsu that Gurgel taught them so well (or as well as they can) in MMA yet Gurgel himself can’t seem utilize this jiu jitsu in MMA. He must be a better teacher, and like you said, better at using it in sports BJJ than in MMA.

I am really looking forward to this one.
After the Lashley match is out of the way, we should be in for an entertaining night of fights.
I wonder how many 'Gurgel is bad at striking' posts are going to pop up.
The funny thing is, he’s not even that good at jiu-jitsu. I mean, Cole Miller submitted him.
Black belts get submitted. When you get tired after a 14 minute war, you can get caught. Dunno if you train or not (based off this probably not) but regardless, anybody at anytime, regardless of belt can get caught.
uuuh yeah I write for the Cincinnati Enquirer. Thanks?

I'll rephrase
He is good. But his jiu-jitsu, at least in MMA, hasn’t proven to be a huge advantage when he’s used it. And I don’t think his takedowns are very good in any case, so he probably just has more fun banging it out. He seems to have a good chin, so why not?
i don’t really think being submitted by Cole Miller is all that embarrassing. Miller is a talented grappler regardless of his rank. His inverted triangle against Lauzon was ridiculous.
