Dr. John Williams of Moncton, New Brunswick set a world record on Saturday, as the oldest man to ever compete in a pro MMA fight at age 70. Williams defeated 49 year-old Larry Brubaker via second round ankle lock submission, at Elite 1 MMA's "Wild Card" event in Moncton.

Williams and Brubaker set a second world record for the highest total combined age of two competitors in an MMA fight at 119 years.

This calls for some “my dad would kick your dad’s ass” debates! Mark Coleman, fight this man!

Some photos from the fight:

the shin guards were apparently required by the sanctioning body.

I think we found Bobby Lashley his next opponent.

Also, if your name is Williams and you’re a doctor and you fight, you pretty much have to go by “Dr. Death.”

I’m impressed, but those pictures look like two old guys taking an aerobic mma class at the rec center.

Why is this being allowed to happen...

If one of their old asses stroked out there’d be more in the way of getting MMA accepted.

Yeah

With the recent death of a fighter, this freakshow bout makes me uncomfortable

Actually he is blaming the referee for lactic acidosis.

What a fucking joke.

This is really a big help to MMA.

I’m glad the guy is in good shape and I’m sure he can whoop my ass; but really… after all the crap about the death we just had in mma, we have a 70 year old guy fighting mma. I know his opponent was 49, but that’s twenty years younger and, I don’t know. I’m at a loss. Like I said, I’m happy the guy is in such good shape, but he should not be competing in mma.

He should not be? Its his decision.

No, it’s not. Athletic commissions clear people to fight or should. They tell people they can’t fight all the time.

They let a guy with no arms fight so this shouldn’t be the end of the world lol, he’s old but at least he has arms

by screenamesuck on Jul 26, 2010 1:57 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Not even just one either.

Even at 70, he has at least 2 million times more arms than Kyle Maynard.

“Nothing from nothing leaves nothing…motherfucker punched you in the mouth”

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

by Sam Cupitt on Jul 26, 2010 5:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Of course. I understand the math

But his tiny nubs may account for a fraction of an arm, so you have to give him the benefit of the doubt.

70?

That dude’s body does not look 70. Looks like he’s a healthy 45 or so. Wow.

good for him that he can do this at his age

but i don’t feel very comfortable with it. I base this on the fact that age is an independent risk factor for preoperative mortilaty/mortality.
